this is where things stand now, with several races across the nation to close to call. reggie: we also have some reese's in the bay area not decided right now. right now, and for san jose. the councilman is emerging as the front runner. lena helen is outside city hall with more on this tight race. lena: good morning. san jose city council member matt meehan is in the lead for now. the race for the next mayor of san jose is much too close to call at this hour in the morning. he is holding a narrow lead against sarah cloud i -- santa clara county opponent. the matter who wins, they will have to work together, with one being mayor and the other remaining in their current

position. he explained how the collaboration would look moving forward. >> after elections, elected officials have a responsibility to come together, trying to understand what the electorate was telling them, then working together to solve problems. i'm committed to focusing on the solutions we need. >> when you work really hard for something, it is very easy to feel let down when things don't go exactly the way you wanted them to. but the thing i know, and i think it may be age or experience, that every single time we move people forward, you make a change that is meaningful to someone. lena: that's his opponent, sidney chavez, acknowledging that she always knew this was going to be a tight race. and our campaign headquarters was standing room only last night, she addressed the crowd twice from the podium, with no acceptance or concession speech.

keep in mind, the final vote on this will take time to tally. we are expecting another update from santa clara county. that is from officials tonight at 5:00. as soon as we get those, we will bring them to you. reggie: thank you. we do have full election results at the bottom of your screen all morning long, including california propositions jumping is watching for us. jobina: let's get into those propositions. we are going to begin with number one. a lot of people know this is the abortion proposition. we know it is legal here in california. this would amend california's constitution to say that the state would not be allowed to interfere with a person's right to an abortion or contraceptives. 65% yes. what we want to do is zoom into northern california, get to our area, then turn on our heat map, so we can see the impact. look at that. 83% from marin county.

let's try out san francisco. 88%. this is where proposition one performed the best. where it did not perform as strong here was solano county, with 65%. proposition 26 and 27 are linked. 73% no. for 27, 80 5% no. this is specifically for solano county, but overall for the state, it did not perform well. it is projected to fail. it would allow for sports cabling in california. i want to zoom in one more time because i want to point something out. this would have been really good news for alameda county, had this done well. we know golden gate fields is in berkeley. the last proposition where going to get into is 28. it is to bring arts and music programs to every public school. it is at no cost to taxpayers. that did really well around the bay area, especially in san

francisco. 77% yes. we have the proposition results, all of them, on our website abc7news.com. we will have part two propositions coming up in the next hour. kumasi: there are three candidates looking out to finish out a term for the recalled district attorney. brooke jenkins is leading right now with 48% of the vote. abc 7 news was at the watch party. she spoke to her constituents and reinforced her mission to balance the necessary reforms with accountability. >> if we keep san francisco back on track. [applause] i want to think everything will san francisco that voted. thank you so much. you represent that the tide has

turned in san francisco, that we can be a democratic city, that we can be a liberal city, but stand for public safety. kumasi: mayor london breed was at jenkins event. if it were not for that trust, she would not have been able to rebuild the das office over the past few months. reggie: one of the races that will require patients over the next four days is for the mayor of oakland. lauren taylors ahead right now with 34% of the vote. there are 10 candidates running to take over for the outgoing mayor. this could take a while because the registrar is counting people who voted for just one candidate first, then they will letter -- they will later add in writing to choice votes. kumasi: now for the party who will control congress. we want to look at the capitol building in washington, d.c. and talk about undecided races. they are in georgia, nevada, and arizona. those will decide which party has the majority for the next two years.

the votes in the states are still being counted. the georgia senate race, democrat raphael warnock is just ahead of republican herschel walker. it is unlikely that either candidate will get 50% of the vote, which means there will likely be a runoff election next month. abc news projecting democrat john fetterman will beat republican dr. method awes. --mehmet oz. you can see a very close race. abc7news reporter justin finch taking a deeper look at these races. reporter: a major win overnight. abc news projecting democrat john fetterman the winner of pennsylvania's open senate seat. >> i never expected we would turn the red counties blue. tonight, that is why i will be the next u.s. senator from

to take the house back. reporter: republicans predicting a red wave on election night. but abc's john carl says results are bearing out otherwise. >> it is nowhere near the night they thought they were going to have. not a certainty that they are going to take the house back. reporter: exit polling showing young voters have been decisive, overwhelmingly backing democrat's and saying abortion is a top issue. reggie: breaking news that is not election related, facebook company -- facebook spirit company says they will lay off employees. that announcement was made by mark zuckerberg just this morning. jobina: these marked the most significant job cuts in the history. they're letting go of about 34%

of their workforce. like many other social media companies, they enjoyed a financial boost because people stayed at home, using phones, computers, and products like whatsapp. but people study going outside again and revenue growth begin to falter. zuckerberg wrote a message to employees that says, "today, i am sharing some of the most difficult changes we have made in kumasi:'s history. i have decided to reduce our team by about 11%. we are letting employees go." they will become a leaner and more efficient company. this includes cutting discretionary spending and a hiring freeze. kumasi: more layoffs in the tech industry. salesforce has laid off hundreds of people. they report they laid off 1% of

it's how it brings us together. reggie: governor gavin newsom easily won a second term. abc 7 news reporter colonel bernard was in sacramento, where the governor was more focused on proposition one. >> a little more after year of defeating, a second term as california governor over his republican opponent. many say he did not have the name recognition to succeed. new sin took a brief victory lap tonight, happy about prop one protecting abortion rights in the state. he did very little campaigning, instead of focusing -- instead focusing on abortion rights nationwide. he does not take tonight when for granted. >> i'm humbled.

attorney's history making, no matter the result. currently, it is between pamela price and terry wiley. rice is campaigning on the progressive policies she served for decades. wiley is a 32 year veteran of the das office who is now serving as chief deputy da. either way, alameda county will be electing its first like district attorney. reggie: x efc fighter is a free man this morning but he was released overnight while he is related -- while he is awaiting trial for attempted murder. reaction from velasquez as he walked out of jail. gloria: he says he's ready to go home and see his family. the former ufc champion was released at midnight from santa clara county main jail. velasquez was seen hugging the person who was there to pick him up. he was granted $1 million bail after a pretrial hearing

yesterday. the judge determined that the former ufc champion will stirring in trial for trying to kill the man accused of molesting his four-year-old son at a daycare center. he says he is thankful to be out in hopes to make positive changes. >> i just feel blessed, you know. i am ready to go home and be with loved ones, family, friends , and make something positive of this whole situation. think you to everybody who gave me support. i love all of you. just always continue to be better as a person, always do good things. just make something positive out of this terrible situation. i found out that i want to do that. gloria: he will be under monitored release and have to stay away from the person he is accused of shooting at. he is facing a temp to murder and other related charges. the man accused of molestation

is also facing sexual sr charges. less a plea agreement is reached in the meantime, a trial would likely start sometime next year. kumasi: thank you. debbie and be a star brittney griner's legal team says she has been moved to a russian penal colony. her exact location is not known at this time. last month, a russian court denied her appeal to shorten her sentence. she was convicted in august after police say they found fate canisters contain cannabis in her luggage at the airport in moscow. reggie: biotech company novavax says there is no need for its bivalent covid-19 booster. it showed no benefit for its booster vaccine. they found the original covered vaccine caused broad immune response against the original ba-1 and ba-5 strains of the coronavirus. the trial included three of the vaccines. snow is expected in the lake

a frosted visor coming our way for much of us tonight. reggie: let's get you up to speed with local election results, staying -- starting with oakland's mayoral race, which we won't know for a couple of days. ring choice voting makes that difficult to figure out. 10 candidates are vying to take over for the mayor. gloria: official same i take a few days. when it comes to the oakland mayor race, that is done by ranked choice voting. they are in, but these are just early results. this is only the first round votes. so far, two front runners have emerged. loren taylor, with about 34% of the vote right now. taylor scored some key endorsements from kurt mayor libby schaaf, as will -- as was the mayors of san jose. another candidate with about 29% of the vote. tao is a progressive and is

supported by several labor unions. however the next mayor is, uniting city hall will be one of the first big challenges. >> it has been a fractured city, both along race and class lines, but also with the government. the mayor again city council, city council against the mayor. there is so much division. gloria: candidates are running to take over for the outgoing mayor. the website has 100% of the pre-since reporting, but it may take a few days before the ranked choice votes are counted. right now, it is just a waiting game. kumasi: thank you. back to the results of the propositions you voted on. jobina is here with three particular propositions. jobina: we are going to start with proposition 29, regarding the dialysis clinic spirit he likely saw the commercials over and over. this is the third time the

proposition has been on the ballot, and it failed again, with 62% saying no. in 2020, 50 3% said no. 2018, 40 2% no. overwhelmingly no. we will see if it comes back in a couple of years. it's get over to proposition 30, that is also projected to fail. but what we want to do is zoom into our area and see how people voted. overwhelmingly here, we see 51 percent, here at 55% as well. this is san mateo county. everyone is about similar here. the wealthiest residents here will not see a tax increase. the measure would have boosted the raisel and incomes above $2 million. it would help put more electric cars on the road. but proposition 31, we knew this, would do well. 80% saying yes. this is for marin county,

alameda, san mateo at 72%. what this would have done is put a ban on flavored tobacco products. that's talking about flavored cigarettes or also the juices for vape pens or anything like that. we also have results for all propositions on our website, abc7news.com. kumasi: the balance of power in congress are means of the air this morning. republicans are favored to retake the house. however, democrats may win more seats then previously expected. right now, abc7news projects they have one 20 seven house seats and need to 18 to take control. current house minority kevin mccarthy, could become house speaker if the gop wins control. mccarthy remains confident about his party's future after election night. >> the election -- the american people are ready for a majority

her place. his opponent has already conceded. here is tim johns. reporter: early results showing status among men to mullins taking an early lead. his opponent has already conceded this race. he is expected to succeed the outgoing congresswoman. i spoke to both of them just a short while ago. >> the bar is very high. tonight's results, frankly, i think showed the love for the woman to my left, whose endorsement was absolutely critical to set the trajectory of this race. i like to think that the voters of this area have watched me in action for the last decade and believe that i am ready. >> have not saying goodbye, that's the good part. i'm coming home. and i'm not done. i'm going to start a new chapter and it's going to be all about

making sure that families and women can thrive in this region. reporter: she represented this district for nearly 15 years. reggie: there may be delays in san francisco's election results. mail-in ballots are being counted, but officials are going to count in-person ballots in the coming days. some are pulling ahead, but it is still unknown who will take on the wind. some in-person voters share what key races they're keeping an eye on. >> i'm looking at the governor's race, looking at many of the different local races here, because those decisions matter as far as what kind of policy we want to see going forward. how are we going to lift up underserved and marginalized communities? reggie: photo still coming in, but mail-in ballots have become popular over the years. kumasi: hundreds of people showed up at john's grill in downtown san francisco for a

kumasi: your voice, your vote. historic victories across the country this morning. jobina tracking races. jobina: historic firsts this morning. preliminary results show upper -- underrepresented groups are making a big stride in this election season. president biden stayed up late last night, calling some of the winners, the first gen z candidate elected to congress in florida. here in california, district 42 candidate robert garcia is now the first openly lgbtq+ immigrant elected to congress. massachusetts given a trail

candidate mark healy is now the first openly lesbian governor elected in the united states. in new hampshire, james is the first trans-man elected to state legislature in the united states history. and given a tour candidate westmore will be the first black governor in the state of maryland. he is also only the third black governor in american history. reggie: that was the part that really hit home. only the third time. jobina: it's also a flip for the state as well, because they're coming off a republican governor. big changes there in maryland. reggie: thank you so much. jeff k drive in san francisco's linkin park is expected to remain car-free. proposition i would have permanently closed the roads to cars. about 60% of voters rejected the proposition. about the same amount of voters said yes to pass proposition j.

sunny skies this afternoon. looking nice from the east bay hills camera. and isolated showers this morning along the coast. a mostly sunny afternoon. in the wake of this storm system, we are going to adapt and bring in some cold air the next few mornings. early saturday morning as our next chance of and isolated showers, but it is really very limited in nature. live doppler 7 along the coast. one in the santa cruz mountains, one approaching pacifica and toward half moon bay. that is about it this morning. some snow falling in this year. chain controls on 80 and 50 this morning. snow is tapering after days of heavy snow. here's the storm warning until 10 a.m. once we get numbers later on today, we will find that the sierra picked up feet of fresh powder. some high speaks could have picked up five feet of snow. that is something we are watching very closely. snow levels drop to 3000 feet late last night. that cold air is certainly overhead right now. look at these numbers well into the 30's and north bay.

results. now, we're going to talk about kids and voting on election day. a texas teacher got creative to give her elementary school students excited about the process. here's what she did. she re-created the experience using their ballots to decide on a very pressing issue, skittles or m&ms. this is powell says her intention was to teach her students the importance of voting. they decided between the two and they had a blast. she says it was pretty cool to see their excitement about voting. it appears, like a lot of resection results, they are still pending. reggie: [laughter] how many do they have to count? what was it, right choice? kumasi: it might have been. peanuts, regular. reggie: if it is not m&ms in some shape or form, we protest at noon.
