it's likely to be days, even weeks before we know for sure which party is in control of the senate. the house will likely turn republican, but that's not settled yet. here's what we know for sure. republicans did not get the huge red wave they were hoping for. it was a disappointing night for former president trump. better than expected for president biden. but the country is still deeply and closely divided, neither man commands majority support. >> and it looks like life could be about to get a lot more complicated for the white house. president biden's skills at working across the aisle could be tested like never before. here's how things stand. republicans gaining six seats in the house. democrats gaining one seat in the senate. >> so with control of congress hanging in the balance, we have our correspondents around the country in the battleground states ready to dig into why these elections played out the way they did. >> congressional correspondent rachel scott starts us off. good morning, rachel. >> hey, george. i don't know whether to say good night or good morning.

it was a marathon of an election day. we said this election would be unpredictable and it certainly was. control of the house and the senate hanging in the balance, but let's start with what we do know this morning. starting in pennsylvania, democrats able to pick up a senate seat. just months after suffering a stroke, john fetterman defeating republican dr. mehmet oz. we don't have projections in all of the states though. starting here in georgia, a tight race between raphael warnock and republican herschel walker. this could likely be headed toward a runoff. in wisconsin, another tight race between barnes and johnson and out west they are still counting votes. a tight race in arizona and here in nevada, you have the democratic incumbent catherine cortez masto trailing right now republican adam laxalt. >> rachel, the house a lot closer than people expected. >> this was not the night that republicans wanted. they wanted to win by huge margins and quickly on election night. we'll take a look. all the gray boxes you see here are races that have not been projected yet. we have about 40 house races that are still up in the air and it's clear that democrats are

still putting up a fight, george. >> 36 governors' races on the ballot. >> yep. so let's get back to the map right here because democrats were able to hang on to some key gubernatorial races right here in new york as well as pennsylvania and in michigan. over to georgia, though, even though we saw that very close senate race that could be headed toward a runoff take a look. the republican governor brian kemp easily defeating stacey abrams. you know, george, we talk so much about how headwinds democrats were heading into this election, facing record high inflation, troubles with the economy, but they are clearly defying expectations so far. >> sure looks that way. rachel scott, thanks very much. t.j.? >> all right, george, with the battle for control of the senate still hanging in the balance going to take a look at some critical battleground states. so far we have seen one senate seat flipped. that was in the all important state of pennsylvania. you heard so much about. this is now where john fetterman beat dr. mehmet oz. >> we bet on the people of pennsylvania, and you didn't let us down. [ cheers and applause ]

and my promise to all of you is i will never let you down. >> our eva pilgrim has more from pittsburgh this morning. eva, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, t.j. it's a big win for democrats flipping that senate seat here in pennsylvania with a win for john fetterman. this was a race we weren't expecting to have the results for possibly several days but the votes are in and fetterman coming away with the victory. suburban women helping give him that win. exit polling showing key factors that decided this race, abortion was a top issue. the majority of pennsylvanians didn't think dr. oz had lived in the state long enough to represent them and that's exactly what i heard over and over again from voters as i was talking to them. many parents in the suburbs of philadelphia and pittsburgh, both moms and dads, telling me they didn't like everything about fetterman, but the abortion issue was their deciding factor. overnight fetterman saying, he was humbled to have won this

job. amy? >> all right, eva pilgrim, thank you for that. many eyes across the nation have been on the battle in georgia. the dramatic race between raphael warnock and herschel walker, the tight race still too close to call at this hour. the candidates both holding out hope overnight. >> we always knew that this race would be close. and so -- >> we don't know why. [ laughter ] >> that's where we are. >> just hang in there a little bit longer because something good takes a while for it to get better, and it's going to get better. >> let's go to steve osunsami who is in atlanta for more on this as the candidates prepare for a possible runoff now. good morning, steve. >> reporter: good morning to you, amy. this is super close. many of us who live here predicted this. the polls appear to be right. the race between incumbent senator raphael warnock and college football legend and republican nominee is too close to call.

here in georgia to win you have to get 50% plus one of the vote. there's a third party candidate in this election and throughout the night both of the major candidates kept reaching that 50% plus one of the vote and then falling behind. incumbent senator warnock ended the evening with abo a 30,000-vote advantage. about 2:00 this morning an official with the secretary of state's office put out a tweet saying that it was, quote, safe to say that this election was headed to a runoff, but he didn't say it was a guarantee. that's because according to people i've talked with that there are still thousans of outstanding votes in the blue-leaning counties that surround this city, metro atlanta. and while they say it is still unlikely that warnock could win this outright, it is mathematically possible. a runoff would take place four weeks from last night on december 6th. the campaigns, of course, are prepared for this and ready to get at it.

voters not so much. george? >> i'll bet. steve osunsami, thanks. let's go out west now. janai norman is in las vegas, nevada. both the governor's race and senate's race too close to call. >> reporter: yeah, george, one of those late vegas nights but not the fun kind. all the races still too close to call and the candidates were encouraging nevadans to get out and vote up until the last minute. 11 minutes after polls closed here at 7:00 p.m. local time, vulnerable senate candidate catherine cortez masto filed a lawsuit asking a judge to keep eight clark county polling locations open for an additional two hours and cited problems with printers not working that created long waits and delayed openings at locations that were required to be open for 12 hours on election day. that was denied, but her focus on clark county which encompasses las vegas here is because this has been a democratic stronghold that makes up about 70% of the electorate here in nevada. it is a county that cortez masto has to whin to have any chance t

holding on to her seat. she had an early lead in the night, but now maga republican and election denier candidate adam laxalt looks to have a slight lead. it is still possible for cortez masto to inch out a victory if outstanding mail-in ballots break heavily in her favor. bottom line, candidates here know every vote will count. it could be days before every vote is counted. george, here in vegas they call that a crapshoot. >> okay, janai norman, thanks. let's go to arizona where democratic senator mark kelly addressed his supporters late last night. that race still too close to call. >> i am feeling confident tonight. [ cheers and applause ] now at the same time, it doesn't look like we're going to have the final results for a little while. >> it's okay, senator. >> and that's okay. >> whit johnson is in phoenix. good morning, whit. >> reporter: george, good morning to you. many expected this would be a very close race in this battle ground of arizona and that's exactly what's happening here with hundreds of thousands of

ballots still left to be counted. senator mark kelly's campaign tells us they like where he stands right now, calling it a solid start for him. he has a slight lead over republican blake masters who was endorsed by donald trump. masters went home last night without ever walking on the stage to greet his supporters. the governor's race is even closer. the democrat katie hobbs holding a slight lead over kari lake. lake has become a darling of the maga movement repeating false claims about the 2020 election. she did take the stage last night blasting election officials telling supporters, we will not stop fighting until we hve every legal vote counted and her team filed a lawsuit against maricopa county after there were issues with tabulation machines that were later resolved. a judge denied that suit and county officials insisted that no voters were turned away and they were offered multiple options to cast their ballots.

still the lake campaign says they are confident too that they can make a comeback as some of these votes from other counties continue to trickle in. amy? >> all right, whit johnson, thank you. as we've been saying the race for control of the house is closer than many expected. that is evident in colorado where republican incumbent lauren boebert is locked in a tight race. mola lenghi is in denver with the latest on that. good morning, mola. >> reporter: good morning, amy. you know, the two statewide races in colorado going to incumbent democrats. jared polis and senator michael bennet both winning re-election. no surprises there but one race not expected to be close was colorado's third congressional district race. the republican incumbent lauren boebert in a surprisingly tight race with democrat challenger adam frisch. boebert gaining national attention in her first term by really tweeting her way into the headlines, claiming god appointed donald trump as president and fiercely denying the 2020 election results and

saying she's tired of the separation of church and state stuff. now, by most accounts boebert was the significant favorite going into this race. it's a solidly republican district in gop hands since 2011 but, you know, this race perhaps best illustrating how close the contest is between the republicans and the democrats in this election cycle. t.j.? >> all right, mola, we thank you. the race for the house played out a little differently than a lot of people had expected. let's bring in our abc news political director rick klein to break it down. we kept hearing about a red wave. was it a red ripple at least? what was it? >> definitely more in the ripple territory. the magic number is 218. look, the republicans more likely to get there when all the races are projected than the democrats but this is a glance at the districts that each party was defending. basically sorted from the easiest to the hardest to defend. so you can see the democrats were able to hold a bunch of their seats. they lost a few on the margins here but they also picked up some republican seats including, you know, ohio and north

carolina, in illinois. meanwhile, the democrats were able to hold on to some that a lot of people thought they would probably lose including a few in ohio. one in rhode island that we're watching closely, virginia as well. and so this is a glance at why the democrats had so much of a better night than expected and we thought they would lose a whole bunch of these and this would be a red map. it's actually looking a little more blue. >> waking up saying it could have been worse. rick, we appreciate you. george? let's bring in our top washington team. let's start with jon karl. a couple headlines tonight. we heard one from rick. no red wave. bad night for donald trump. >> look, we don't know if the republicans are going to win control of the house. we don't know if republicans are going to win control of the senate yet but we do know this, the biggest loser last night was donald trump. in state after state candidates that he brought to the race, candidates that he endorsed got into the race, did not win or are losing right now. look who won. there were republicans who won and won big. in new hampshire, you had chris sununu, an anti-trump republican

who won big even though trump's candidate for senate lost. in georgia, kemp, brian kemp, somebody that trump tried to get defeated in the republican primary won by, you know, double digits and the biggest one of all, ron desantis who did not have donald trump's endorsement wins by almost 20 points in florida. >> yeah, that was the biggest win of the night by far. cecilia vega, for president biden, not as bad as the white house feared. >> i'll tell you, i got a text from one source late last night. there were exclamation marks increasingly coming. as the night went on, they were saying, phew. they were bracing for the worst and thought it would be a bloodbath and you even heard president biden express that sentiment, look, this potentially could be bad for us. but what you're hearing from people inside the white house, democrats in washington, is, look, given the history, given the numbers they were looking at potentially losing, president biden could potentially -- assuming things carry on with the numbers that we're looking at right now could be looking at losing fewer seats than most presidents in recent history.

that for them is a big win. they defied expectations in their book. >> and terry moran, election deniers went all across the country, but not in the three big key governors' races, pennsylvania, michigan, and wisconsin. those were so close in 2016 and 2020. >> right at the forefront of those races. in some ways yesterday was a day of liberation for the republican party to become a loyalty test, an article of faith to deny the legitimacy of the 2020 election and while plenty of them won really in those races, those highest profile races where it was right at the forefront where the denial of the legitimacy of the election was one of the main reasons republicans were on the ballot, they lost and so not only is donald trump the loser but there is a kind of moment for the republicans to shed that. >> i wonder what this means, jon karl, for kevin mccarthy. he came out around 2:00 in the morning and said, yes, republicans will control the house. that is likely, but not by the margin they expected. could he face a challenge for speaker?

>> i don't see who would challenge him, but, look, republicans were gearing up for a big win in the house. mccarthy thought he would have a majority of 15 maybe 20 seats. like you said they may well win control of the house. they probably will win control of the house. it will be a much narrower majority, probably five or ten seats. it will be hard for mccarthy to govern but i don't see who can challenge him for speaker. i still think he will be the speaker of the house. >> one of the big questions none of us know for sure what is house speaker nancy pelosi do in the wake of this election? >> exactly. what does she do? she had given -- sort of raised the prospect of perhaps given what happened to her husband in that attack on him, she wasn't sure what was going to happen, whether she decides to keep going and pushing forward with her role in congress. so we will wait to see. i think also the big question, george, what's president biden going to do regarding 2020 -- 2024. he was going to wait to see what happens with these midterms yesterday. the big question is what's next. >> that is a huge question. thank you all very much. more on the midterm results

including the win in florida for republicans and why the state is shifting largely red. chris christie and donna brazile are with us for their take on the results. first, let's go to ginger in cocoa beach, florida. >> reporter: less than 20 hours from nicole. you can see the crashing waves here. here's what will make a big difference, a full moon or coming off one. the tide going in 100 yards. we're going to see erosion problems. look at the hurricane warnings from daytona beach down to west palm. we could see one to two feet backward in biscayne bay. the tropical storm warnings that extend up to south carolina including coastal georgia. this is going to be a very broad storm, landfall happens early tomorrow morning. but impacts all the way through the end of the week with heavy rain. i'll have so much more coming up. your local weather now in just 30 seconds.

>> reporter: good morning, amy. it was an early night for newly re-elected governor ron desantis. his race called just after the polls closed. commanding victories up and down the ballot here in the sunshine state. republicans flipping three house seats here in florida alone. one replacing the vacancy left behind by desantis' opponent charlie crist. others impacted by controversial redistricting diluting the black vote. florida once a perennial swing state, it turned blue for obama twice, then red for trump twice, now it appears solid red thanks in part to a huge effort in voter registration on the republican side and the powerful latino vote leaning further and further red, even the democratic stronghold of miami-dade county turned red for the first time in 20 years. in speaking with democrats in the state, they feel let down by party leadership. some telling me they need to clean house in florida and start over. that said, their one highlight, 25-year-old democrat maxwell

frost winning his election becoming the first gen-z member of congress. he is now filling val demings' seat losing to marco rubio. t.j.? >> victor, thank you so much. we want to head to our big board. abc news political director rick klein is there. give us a closer look at what happened last night. >> this is astounding. if you take a look at what happened in miami-dade county, this used to be a democratic stronghold. ron desantis carried it by 11 points. just two years ago, two years ago joe biden carried that by seven points. even though he lost florida he won miami-dade. it used to be a democratic stronghold. now it is the exact opposite. i talked to one democrat late last week looking at the early vote numbers said, look, if you're a democrat right now you may as well cut florida off and let it float off into the ocean. it looks lost. >> my goodness, that's one way to put it there. rick, we talk about the gen-z candidate that won in florida. in terms of gen-z and speaking of that was an unexpected youth turnout. did they sway things nationwide?

>> no question. the democrats do not do as well without the youth vote. the strongest age group among anyone in the exit polls. it was voters under the age of 30. they broke for democrats by nearly 30 points and what's more important, t.j., is that they kept up their vote share and voted as much as they did in the last presidential election. that is unheard of in a midterm election. young voters showed up and did their part for democrats. >> it's good to hear young folks showing up. thank you so much, rick. george? let's go to aaron katersky in times square with a look at what happened in new york. >> reporter: there hasn't been a governor's race this close in 30 years, george. kathy hochul survived a surprisingly strong challenge from republican lee zeldin. he tapped into voter anxieties about crime and the high cost of living in new york and though he was unsuccessful, his message seems to have resonated in the new york city suburbs which are now an unlikely battleground for control of the house. zeldin is an ally of former president trump. he was no doubt hoping for

different outcomes here in his former home state because the results last night assure investigations into trump's business continue. zeldin had threatened to remove the manhattan district attorney. he put the trump organization on trial. it's still going on. and voters in this state re-elected democratic attorney general letitia james. she has sued trump for $250 million. george, the voters here effectively endorsed james' accusations of fraud. >> okay, aaron, thanks. let's bring in our political experts, chris christie and donna brazile. let's pick up where aaron left off. we heard already jon karl say donald trump was the biggest loser of the night. do you agree? >> no question. look, the big problem is that in every one of these races where given the atmosphere both inside these states and nationally, where republicans should have picked up, they lost because we had inferior candidates. mitch mcconnell previewed this over the summer with his concerns about senate candidates in particular and almost every one of these trump-endorsed

candidates you see in competitive states have lost. and it's a huge loss for trump and, again, it shows that his political instincts are not about the party. they're not about the country. they're about him. so there's one litmus test. if you say the 2020 election was stolen, i'm with you. and if you don't, i'm not and your qualifications or ability to win don't enter the evaluation. >> donna, you were talking up a good game and turned out to be more right than wrong. >> well, one of the reasons i decided after i talked to you to get a red jacket because i saw the only red wave possible for chris today was what i was wearing. [ laughter ] it was a trickle. it was a trickle. no question. look, democrats defied expectations. democrats defied historical norms. i mean, joe biden said it was going to be a choice. it was a choice. we saw a good turnout, early turnout, in-person turnout. we were competitive, but i'm very disappointed about north carolina. i'm disappointed about florida. i'm disappointed about stacey abrams, but i'm so excited that maggie won.

declared cancer-free right after. aside from the fact that you did not have to have chemo or radiation, this was not smooth sailing. >> no. i ended up staying in the hospital for about 15 days, 20 days, which is unusual because we had a complication and developed an infection. >> reporter: dayne canceling her august tour dates to focus on getting better, not just physically but emotionally saying her hospitalization brought back traumatic memories from her medically fragile childhood, suffering from terrible kidney infections. >> for me being back i felt like i was 4 years old again back in the hospital basically locked inside my own body without a voice. so this has challenged me mentally, emotionally, i am now back in a therapy program. >> reporter: but today she's feeling stronger and waving a warning flag for others, especially women to talk to a doctor about being screened since early detection may have saved her life. >> this is a wake-up call for lots of women. >> 100%.

"vogue" wants the fake magazine to be removed from the rapper's social media and websites. we reached out. so far drake and 21 savage aren't commenting, guys. >> thanks very much. now to our series "science of you." experts emphasize the amount of sleep you get can impact your health and many have turned to wearable devices to track their sleep including becky worley who joins us now. you're looking into the accuracy of she's sleep tracking devices. >> reporter: this is right, george. good morning. or is it a good morning. did i get enough sleep last night? was it good sleep? there are medical grade tests to tell us about our sleep cycles and i wanted to find out if the commercial wearables that use inputs like heart rate, movement, breathing rate and estimate when and how you're sleeping, are they close enough to the gold standard to be useful? ♪ this is what it takes to evaluate your sleep in a sleep clinic. >> i feel like frankenstein. putting new wearable devices on that track sleep every night is

a much easier proposition. so i've come to the stanford university sleep clinic where they'll use these sleep monitors to evaluate how long i sleep, how much i'm awake and how much rem sleep i get. i'm wearing a fitbit, the oura ring, a samsung smartwatch and the apple watch. how does the data we get from these wearables compare to the data we get from medical sensors which are really the gold standard? i head off into dreamland with all the wires and the wearables recording my data. a few days later the doctor interprets the results. >> the great news is that you had pretty normal sleep and you did not have any major sleep disorder. >> reporter: we got really interesting data. stanford says my total sleep time was 7 hours and 28 minutes. for the wearables they were all pretty close. the fitbit says i got 0.5% less than stanford's number.

oura, 1% more, samsung 1% less, apple, 3.5% more. not bad. where things got a little more fractured the assessment of rem sleep cycles. stanford says i had 123 minutes in this cycle where you have the most vivid dreams and you cement a lot of your memories. the consumer devices were off by a margin of 4% to 43%, and then one measurement that has a lot of impact on our perception of sleep quality, how long you lie awake. either trying to fall asleep or waking up in the middle of the night. stanford says it was 33 minutes. fitbit and samsung overestimated that number and oura and apple underestimated it. it's important to note this is a comparison of one person's results while wearing sleep trackers. many of the companies have done independent studies like fitbit telling us they did a 60-person

study showing nearly 70% ago ray in their data. samsung adds it's about positively affecting sleep patterns and habit, not about the absolute numbers and oura tells us they've done a study with 500 participants over 1,200 nights and they're just tweaking their algorithm to improve acc accuracy. the experts agree these devices are moving forward. >> at the present time, they're coming close to the gold standard in lab sleep study measures but not quite there. >> reporter: now, i don't have sleep apnea and these devices are not about that but they are about trends and i've been using one for six months. it's really helped me to make my sleep better and gamify the process of getting a good night sleep. >> you do look well rested, becky. coming up, keith urban about perform live. ♪ i'm talking about daddy's old pickup truck ♪
