building a better bay area moving forward finding solutions. this is abc 7 news. it's still a tight race in the south bay to see who will be the next mayor of the bay area's largest city, but in just moments, we are expecting an update from election officials on the san jose mayors race. good evening. thank you for joining us. i'm dan ashley and i'm liz kroitz every voteelouti con offy making sure that every vote is counted exactly right abc 7 news reporter. zach fuentes is live with very latest on the jose mayors race sac that latest is in my hand right now a spokesperson with the santa clara county registrar just handed me the latest numbers coming in just a few minutes ago. so i'll let you know right now where things stand with the san jose mayors race between matt mahan and cindy chavez right now. matt. mahan is leading the race with

71,494 votes that is 51% of the vote. cindy chavez has 66,728. the total votes right now are 138,000 more than that 138,000 votes, but the registrar's office tells me they have a lot of votes a lot of ballots in the back that are still yet to be counted in this very tight race between two very different candidates. we spend some time back there this morning take a look. the polls closed at eight tuesday, but the counting process in santa clara county is far from over the ballots keep piling in we were there just as around 2,000 volt by mail ballots were brought in from the us postal service filling up a portion of this warehouse things are going pretty fast. we have a lot of ballots to process because a lot of vote by mail ballots that got dropped off at the vote centers all the mail coming from the post office. we're expecting a lot of vote by mail ballots coming from them and then all of the people that voted at the vote center, it was a really high amount of people that went in and voted in person

yesterday many of those ballots adding to the final tabulation in the close san jose mayoral race. that was too close to call on election day. we were at both candidate watch parties tuesday night as a result started coming in and those initial showings matt mayhem was leading the race by a thin margin cindy chavez responded to those early numbers when you work really hard for something it can be i mean, it's very easy to feel let down when things don't go exactly the way you wanted them to but the thing i know is that you know, when i think this may be it may be age. it may be experience that every single time. we move people forward you make a change gets meaningful to someone over at mayhan's watch party a mood of celebration though mayhem reminded to supporters at the election was far from over here. we are in a dead heat now, we're gonna take a few days to this out and see where we end up but either way this grassroots

campaign was a force to be reckoned with and it's going to it's going to continue on beyond the election for now the santa clara county registrar's office this selection is heard all the races that are close. we're still processing the balance as we do we have to just keep going with what we're doing and making sure that every step is i mean, none of the steps are missed. that's what they're doing right now. they tell me they have a mountain of ballots in this building right now that are still being tabulated for this race and so many other things happening here in santa clara county, too. there's a tight race the city of santa clara for mayor. there's also the santa clara county sheriff's race that is going on. so these are unofficial results. but of course the latest that we have right now is that matt mahan is leading about 4,700 votes, but this is still far from over they're going to be posting election results every night this week by 5pm right now live in san jose zach fuentes abc 7 news, very tight race. there's zach. all right. thank you and the race for oakland mayor is down from 10

candidates to two front runners now after rounds of ranks choice voting council member lauren taylor is leading with 34% of the vote to council president pro tem shang tao's 29% the two are buying to replace turned out mayor libby schaaf who endorse taylor mayor schaff talk to us live today on midday life. there are still a lot to count but taylor has a great lead and that lead even increases after the ranked choice roll up. so i'm feeling very optimistic, but still waiting for those balance to count. the alameda county registrar voters says it won't release any more election results until tomorrow. brooke jenkins is claiming victory in the san francisco district. attorney's race. jenkins issued a statement. thanking voters adding quote it is the honor of a lifetime to be elected and i pledge that improving and promoting public. safety will be my and our offices top priority and quote the race has yet to be called

officially, but jenkins is leading with about 48% of the vote. san francisco election officials will not release any new vote totals in any of the races today. they actually stop processing mayland ballots on monday to facilitate in person voting yesterday officials plan to resume the processing and counting of those ballots this afternoon, and now to the latest on the national election results and the battle for the control of congress abc 7 news. anchor karina, nova joins us live from the newsroom with the very latest karina. let's go well, liz, there are some key races that are still too close to call both in the house and the senate ballots are still being counted for senate seats in arizona and nevada and in georgia a runoff will happen that georgia runoff may once again decide who controls the us senate that depends what happens in arizona and nevada and that's because neither rafael warnock or herschel walker reached the 50% threshold needed to win that runoff race will happen december

6th president. joe biden spoke about the election today saying it was a good day for democracy and that the predicted red wave that the republicans touted didn't happen. while any seat lost is painful. i'm good. democrats didn't win the last night democrats. had a strong night. and we lost fewer seats in the house representatives than any democratic president's first midterm election the last 40 years. and we had the best midterm for governor since 1986. and another thing that we know is that voters spoke clearly about their concerns. president biden adding that he understands the voters are frustrated when it comes to issues like the economy reproductive rights and crime taking a look at the us house. there are still races to be called. so as of now, it's still unclear which party will be in control and representative kenneth and mccarthy was optimistic when speaking to supporters about those races. he went as far as announcing his

meta employees were laid off. i woke up about 8 am and i checked my personal email. i found the email saying that i'm late off this software engineer who did not want to be identified by name said many of her colleagues were up until 3 am checking their personal email hoping it wouldn't be them. everyone is anxious because we know it would happen, but we don't know when it would happen. how many people do you know, who were also laid off today? a lot i think for the friends. i know there are probably 10 or more the news of the layoffs is already impacting businesses in the area. we spoke to several restaurant owners at this shopping center across from meta who said business was already down with meta employees working from home. now that concern intensifies. i don't know what happened now because like the people know how to anymore coming. and i don't know what happened there. my business has done some

with meta announcing massive layoffs salesforce. also announcing this week. it's laying off about a thousand people and twitter cutting 3,700 workers. that'll hit the bay area quite hard. i think though much needed rebalancing right both in terms of how these businesses are run as well as the cost of living here in the bay area. we always assume there is a hockey stick and that hockey stick growth never never ends when in reality, you know, there is ups and downs in san francisco roger lee found it three startup company since he graduated from harvard. he created layoffs dot fyi to track tech industry layoffs nationwide now, i've got the most comprehensive database list of layout so far lay off. fyi has recorded that in the bay area alone 227 tech companies have laid off collectively 36,000 employees the bay area accounts for roughly one-third of the take the tech layoffs

i would recommend you call jacoby and meyers. they really went to bat for me. public safety in tehama county after the sheriff's office announced daytime patrols will soon be suspended the decision follows quote catastrophic shortages. the sheriff's office says it has trouble with recruitment and retention of their employees in the last year. it's lost over 20 staff members. so starting november 20th deputies will only work the night shifts, obviously. response times are going to be affected and we've made the decisions to limit as much as we can the dangerous to public safety, but not having deputies on the streets obviously is not beneficial to the public. chp will help patrol during the day, but will only respond to life-threatening emergencies in the east bay oakland police.

tell us two people were shot on the sidewalk around three o'clock this afternoon near 30th and brook streets in oakland's pill hill area. this guy seven shows evidence markers on the ground near a newly built apartment building police. do not have details on either victims condition. both of them are being treated in the hospital and some people robbed at an armored truck guard near an east oakland bank this morning. it happened outside of bank of america branch on hegenberger road near oakland airport. this was about 10 o'clock this morning that area is notorious for car break-ins oakland police. say the robbers drove up to an armored truck guard flashed a gun and took items from that guard. they then drove away. they did not rob the truck itself. okay, so ahead get ready for some cold weather with temperatures forecasted to take a major dip. we'll have abc 7 news meteorologist sandia patel you're tracking the frost advisory and we'll check in with her in just a minute stick with

another hurricane. this is hurricane nicole or this rare. november storm has strengthened to a category 1 hurricane as it nears south florida's atlantic coast. it's expected to make landfall tonight or early tomorrow morning governor. ron. desantis says people in high risk areas need to be ready to get out fast people in the entire impacted areas should continue to pay close attention as the storm progresses. we know these things can be dynamic. nicole's storm surge could climb

so for the little ones definitely bundle them up as well. let me show you the rainfall totals. these are the storm totals we are looking at over three inches that fell in ben lomond in the santa cruz mountains over an inch there in san francisco. 1.38 oakland santa rosa almost an inch and a half just above that in livermore. you're usually in the rain shadow of the santa cruz mountains and over an inch in concord and as dan and liz just mentioned the snow piled up mammoth getting the most snow many of the sierra resorts up near tahoe received anywhere from one to three feet of snow and as you take him back with live doppler 7, you can see the activity is quite a down here in the bay area. we are seeing some clouds around but that's about it. here's a live view right now from our oakland airport camera. we are looking towards the clouds there that are really just overhead 54 in san francisco, palo alto, oakland 55 degrees. is 56 in san jose and 52 and a half moon bay suture tower

camera. looking at san francisco tonight mid to upper 50s from santa rosa to napa 53 fairfield. you're feeling that cooler air livermore 55 degrees san jose the sun has set and that's why it's starting to get cold right now cold and frosty the next two mornings chance of showers late friday night to saturday, and we're looking at dry milder weather early next week. so frost advisory goes up at midnight runs until 9 am tomorrow everyone included except for the bay shoreline and parts of the coast in the city frost will form and could kill sensitive plants. so you'll want to definitely bring them inside or cover them solano county two to nine am that same frost advisory temperature range will be low to upper 30s. so once again definitely be prepared for the cold. how cold are we talking? how about low 30s in places like lakeport all the way to the mid 40s in san francisco certainly will be cold enough for frost to forum tomorrow afternoon. you're looking at upper 50s. below 60s mainly sunny skies, but we will see some higher clouds filtering the sunshine,
