him. i told him to get out. reporter: as fast as he got into the truck is as fast as he drove off and took out the gate in the process. >> this is incredible. reporter: the driver suspected of stealing three cars during the chase, taking police and helicopters on quite the ride, lasting over an hour as it got dark. >> he is going out of the neighborhood. oh! right through those deputies. reporter: as the driver crashed into more vehicles, the law caught up with him, sending him into a gas pump. the driver hit reverse. >> they are shooting at him. reporter: despite the shots that went into the car, and a close call with a fire, the driver was able to walk. he was taken into custody minutes later. >> wow. stepping out of the vehicle.

wednesday evening, more than 4700 votes is all that separated the mayoral candidates. updated posts show relative newcomer, matt mahan, narrowly leading the race. >> however this plays out, i will be on the city council, and i want to be in the process to lead the city forward. reporter: i sat down with him on wednesday. he is optimistic but understands 50% of ballots have yet to be counted. it is a proces san jose state political professor says could take a week to complete. >> we are down to a few hundred or thousand votes to make the difference, we want to make sure every vote is counted. reporter: a sentiment echoed by both campaigns. chavez released a statement telling abc 7 news, while we do

not know the outcome of the race, my focus remains on representing my community on the board of supervisors. with focus on the tight race, county election officials answered questions on what would trigger an automatic recount. evelyn mendez says 0.025%, or 25 votes. >> we still have a lot of ballots to process. a lot came in from other counties and the post office, so we are processing a lot of ballots. reporter: however the mayoral race shakes out, san jose is set to see big changes in leadership come january, 2023. >> this is a big transition. they will be quite a few new faces on the council, and whatever role i am in, i look forward to working with them. we have a lot of work. reporter: abc 7 news. dan: in the east bay, we are

expecting more voting results tomorrow for oakland mayor, also too close to call after narrowing down from ranked choice voting. it is down to councilman loren taylor -- they are looking to replace the termed out mayor who spoke with us today. >> there are still a lot more ballots account but taylor has a great lead and that increases after the ranked choice roll up. i feel optimistic but still waiting for the ballots to be counted. dan: taylor is leading with 34% of the vote. with so many races still outstanding, you can check any and all results as they come in in real time. find every race on abc7news.com /election. developing news, layoffs are again affecting the tech

industry. meta has announced huge layoffs, living 11,000 jobless year read one software engineer says she found out she was laid off through an email this morning, and people are anxious because they did not know when the job cuts would happen. >> i woke up about 8:00 a.m. and checked my email saying i am laid off. everyone is anxious because we knew it would happen but we did not know when. dan: according to meta's severance package, employees will get 16 weeks of base pay plus two weeks for every year of service. meta is expected to end one of its san francisco office leases and consolidate its main offices in the city into one space on howard street. san francisco is getting called out by the newly reelected governor of new york. in a recent interview, governor kathy hochul was asked about

crime issues in new york city to which she responded, things would never be as bad as the city by the bay. those are fighting words around here. the response from local leaders tonight. reporter: shots fired by governor kathy hochul in a recent interview on msnbc, her target, san francisco. >> we are worried we could be san francisco. >> we will never be san francisco because we are already making a difference. reporter: the comments were in reference to crime but caught the attention of local leaders. >> it is inaccurate and unfair. reporter: the head of the bay area council are calling on kathy hochul to apologize. >> it is not just the bay area city council that took issue, san francisco's mayor, london breed is also disappointed. >> to take what you see online and try to develop an opinion about san francisco, that is not

a fair assessment. reporter: breed question whether the crime rates in her city were as high as the big apple. >> if you look at the data, we probably pale in comparison to new york. reporter: the city council acknowledges the problem including crime and homelessness, but they argue new york faces similar challenges and should work together with places like san francisco to combat that. >> if it came from governor desantis, i suppose we would take it more in stride, but coming from governor hochul in new york was shocking and uncalled for. reporter: despite the shade, mayor breed says there are no hard feelings. >> my hope is she will visit and see for herself rather than what she sees in a video. reporter: abc 7 news. dan: nancy pelosi's future in politics, the status of the current speaker of the house that she heads into another

the attack has prompt questions about speaker pelosi's future in politics. we spoke with an insider on some insight. >> in the last couple of years we have not seen a lot of this publicly but behind the scenes a number of congressional people wanted her out as speaker. they said it was time for a generational change and wanted younger people to step up. it was a close call last time but she was at war with trump. they could go to her and say we want you to stay on as minority and fight for us to win in two years. dan: how speaker pelosi won her reelection last night as expected. her husband's attacker has a preliminary hearing on december 14 for the state charges he is facing. san francisco's newest whole foods is cutting its hours. crime is one of the reasons. the store opened in march on
