reporter: the driver suspected of stealing three cars during the chase, taking police and helicopters on quite the ride, lasting over an hour as it got dark. >> he is going out of the neighborhood. oh! right through those deputies. reporter: as the driver crashed into more vehicles, the law caught up with him, sending him into a gas pump. the driver hit reverse. >> they are shooting at him. reporter: despite the shots that went into the car, and a close call with a fire, the driver was able to walk. he was taken into custody minutes later. >> wow. stepping out of the vehicle. whoa. reporter: j.r. stone, abc 7 news. dan: as this was happening live, we were streaming the moments from our streaming app.

leading the race. >> however this plays out, i will be on the city council, and i want to be in the process to lead the city forward. reporter: i sat down with him on wednesday. he is optimistic but understands 50% of ballots have yet to be counted. it is a proces san jose state political professor says could take a week to complete. >> we are down to a few hundred or thousand votes to make the difference, we want to make sure every vote is counted. reporter: a sentiment echoed by both campaigns. chavez released a statement telling abc 7 news, while we do not know the outcome of the race, my focus remains on representing my community on the board of supervisors. with focus on the tight race, county election officials answered questions on what would trigger an automatic recount.
