this is coming after a series of layoffs in the tech industry. the companies you see here are some of the other companies that have recently made cuts. lena howland is live with more on meta's layoffs. >> mark zuckerberg says he is working on a number of solutions to be a leaner and more efficient -- leader and more efficient company. mark zuckerberg, taking full responsibility for this. even apologizing to his employees. he says he will cut discretionary funding and continue the hiring freeze until quarter one. we talked to a software engineer who did not want to be identified by name who said many of her colleagues were up until 3:00 a.m., checking their personal email, hoping it would not be them. she says at least 10 of her close friends at work got the same notice. >> i woke up about 8:00 a.m. and

francisco da race even though it has not been official yet. she said i pledge that improving and promoting public safety will be my and our office's top priority. with so many races still outstanding, you can check any of the results as they come in. you can find every race and measure now on abc7news.com/election. kumasi: we are tracking the call, which is making landfall this morning as a hurricane in florida, before weakening to a tropical storm. i want to take you live, looking at the storm right now. it is packing heavy winds and potentially ewa stating storm surge. we have not seen a hurricane make landfall in the u.s. this late in the year in nearly 40 years. jobina is tracking the latest from the live desk. jobina: the storm is so large that it will affect most of the state throughout the day. this morning, hurricane nicole crashed its way onto florida's

east coast, making landfall on hutchinson island, lashing the coast with gusts at 75 miles per hour. the wave swallowed into higher backyards. nicole has been downgraded to a tropical storm. one of the biggest concerns is the storm surge seeping into areas hit hard by hurricane ian six weeks ago. reporters have been on the scene describing what they have seen. >> we do not know. carrie, come down here and take a look at this. it is starting to crumble, little by little, underneath this house. jobina: new drum video shows the beach erosion in volusia county, hours before nicole's landfall. the sheriff says a dozen condos and at least one house were in danger of collapsing. more than 200,000 customers are without power across florida.

details of these cuts. lena: sources close to abc7news confirmed that with yesterday's shakeup, meta is also shrinking their massive real estate footprint in order to help cut down on costs. our sources say that tech giant is expected to end one of its san francisco office leases and consolidate its two main offices in the city into one space on howard street. meta says that means desk sharing for people who already spent most of their time working away from the office. mayor london breed says she thinks it will be a challenging business climate for the next couple of years. >> it's going to be a rough patch. we came out of a global pandemic. it will take us some time to get to a better place. we are working on our economic recovery, changes of use downtown. we will get there. it will take a little time. >> i don't know what happened.

georgia's dead heat senate race between incumbent democrat raphael warnock and herschel walker heads to a december 6 runoff election. kumasi: governor newsom heads to fresno county today after securing another term in tuesday's election. it was a win for him but also for california democrats. voters passed prop one which has a right to abortions and contraceptives. it has been -- months since the supreme court overturned roe v. wade. california has pushed back with votes that brought the new law into the election. reggie: new development in the attack against paul pelosi. the husband of nancy pelosi. david depape has been indicted on federal charges. he is charged with kidnapping a federal officer employee and one count of assault of an immediate family member of an official.

blasted off into space with four astronauts and the hopes and dreams of countless people. at the helm of the crew five mission, nicole mann. the nasa astronaut has become somewhat of a celebrity. >> it is so incredible. i have received a lot of letters. >> humbled as she is not only the first woman to serve as mission commander but the first indigenous woman from nasa to be launched into space. she is a registered member of a tribe. >> i feel proud to be on board of the space station and to represent native americans and indigenous people on board. i think it is important that we recognize that there are all different types of people on board the international space station. not only from different countries but from different backgrounds and nationalities. >> she holds a bachelors degree

and masters degree in mechanical engineering. she has been deployed twice, flying jets in the marine corps. space and the stars have always fascinated her. she never thought she could be ed pastor not until later in life. -- and asked her not -- an astronaut until later in life. >> i never understood what they did and what it took to become an astronaut. it was not in the realm of possibilities. >> she is leading a team conducting numerous space experiments in a lab. her son and husband, back here on earth. the only personal item is this dream catcher. >> it is amazing in microgravity because it just floats and the feathers go every which way. >> a sacred native american symbol that is believed to catch bad dreams and release good spirits. a constant reminder of where she came from. >> i think that the strength i find in that is a gift from my mother. it is the strength to know that
