as ceo mark zuckerberg says, he is working on a number of solutions to make it a leaner and more efficient company. thousands of people across the bay area are without a job before the holidays. mark zuckerberg taking full responsibility, even apologizing to employees. he said he will cut discretionary funding and continuing the hiring freeze until at least quarter 1. we spoke to a software engineer who did not want to be identified by name. she said many of her colleagues were up until 3:00 a.m. yesterday checking their personal email hoping it would not be them. at least 10 of her close friends at work out the same notice. >> i woke up at 8:00 and i checked my personal email. everyone is anxious because we knew it would happen. lena: sources close to abc 7 news confirm meta is also

expected to end one of its san francisco office leases and consolidate its two offices into one space on howard street. meta says everyone getting laid off will get 16 weeks of base pay and an additional. kumasi: we know a lot of you have been searching for information on which tack companies event layoffs recently. we put together this tracker. you can find it on abc7news.com. reggie: votes are still being counted in the san jose mayor's race. it could take a few more days to figure out the winner. right now, matt meehan has the lead over cindy chavez by -- half the ballots. are not counted yet. mahan said he is optimistic. >> however this plays out, i

claiming victory in the san francisco district attorney's race even though it has not been officially called. she released a statement thanking voters adding it is in honor of a lifetime to be elected and i pledge promoting public safety will be our top priority. the race has not been called the jenkins is leading with more than 47% of the vote. kumasi: it is still unclear who will control congress. republicans are close to clinching a house majority. control of senate will come down to arizona, nevada and georgia. georgia senator raphael warnock and former nfl player herschel walker will be heading to a runoff. democrats have already flipped pennsylvania. reggie: with so many races still outstanding, you can check results as they come in on abc7news.com/election. kumasi: we are tracking nicole,

which is making landfall this morning as a hurricane. it weakened to a tropical storm. we will get back to that in a moment. devastating storm surge -- here is the live look from the coast of florida. what makes nicole unique is we have not seen a hurricane make landfall in the u.s. this late in the year in nearly 40 years. jobina is tracking the latest. jobina: the storm is so large it will affect most of the state throughout the day. this morning, hurricane nicole crashed its way onto florida's east coast, making landfall on a tiny beach called hutchinson island, wind gusts topping 75 miles per hour. the waves swallowed entire backyards. nicole has been downgraded to a tropical storm. one of the biggest concerns right now is the storm surge

california democrats. voters passed prop 1. it has been four months since the supreme court overturned roe v. wade. california has pushed back against that decision. abortion was a key issue on balance across the country. people in michigan, pennsylvania and wisconsin also voted in favor of abortion rights. reggie: new developments in the attack against paul pelosi. the alleged suspect, david depape, has been indicted on federal charges. he is charged with attempted kidnapping and one count of assault. depape may face a combined 50 years on those charges. this is separate from the state charges he is already facing. the attack has prompted questions about speaker pelosi's future in politics. >> in the last couple of years, we have not seen a lot of this

publicly but behind the scenes, a number of congressional people wanted her out as speaker. they said it was time for a generational change. they wanted younger people to step up. >> it was a close call last time. >> they could go to her and say we want you to stay on as minority and fight for us to win in two years. >> you think she might take that? >> i do not know. reggie: speaker pelosi won her reelection. kumasi: there is rising concern about public safety after the sheriff's office announced daytime patrols will soon be suspended. the decision follows catastrophic shortages. the sheriff's office as it has problems with recruitment and retention because of low pay. it has lost over 20 staff members in the last year. deputies will only be working night shifts. >> response times will be affected.

kumasi: welcome back. it is 6:44. november is native american indian heritage month. we are highlighting the first native american woman who have gone to space with nasa. her name is nicole mann. faith abubey has more on her story. >> the spacex dragon endurance cruiseship blasting off into space with four astronauts and the hopes and dreams of countless people. at the helm of the crew five mission, nicole mann. >> this is nicole mann. >> the nasa astronaut has become somewhat of a celebrity. >> it is so incredible.

what better place than oakland? the city has a special connection to the film. . it was featured in the original black panther film. the director is from oakland. a red carpet to celebrate the release of the marvel studios film black panther: wakanda forever. it was at the grand lake theater in oakland. organizations were awarded grants from disney that provide science, technology, engineering and arts education to young people from historically underrepresented communities. the sequel with images of grief. original star chadwick boseman did not live to make the sequel, he passed away at the age of 43 from cancer in 2020 but his spirit is part of it. the film highlights the women of wakanda. >> it was a hit.
