building a better bay area moving forward finding solutions. this is abc 7 news. the oakland mayor's race is still too close to the call between councilmember lauren taylor and council pro tem. xiang tao but just moments ago. we received an update on the results from alameda election officials. good evening. i'm on dates and i'm dan ashley. thanks for joining us, but even with that update a winner may still not be announced until next week. yeah to explain why abc 7 news reporters answer hudson has more the race for oakland's next mayor is down to two city council president pro tem tao and the candidate who's in the lead city council member lauren

taylor. this is something that is truly a grassroots ever-powered campaign. and i know that that's the same way. we will drive forward and addressing oakland's public challenges tiller spoke to abc7 news on election night. it is watch party since early results were released tuesday night. taylor has consistently held a small lead against tao but the race is far from over those ones that were dropped off very close to election day. haven't been counted yet. and those are what we're starting to process right now. please with the alameda county registrar voters. he anticipates 40 to 50 percent voter. turnout county wide, which he says is about average for a midterm election the vote for oakland mayor is done by ranked choice voting which extends the process and ranked choice voting the candidate with the fewest votes is eliminated then everyone who voted for that candidate has their next choice counted the process continues until a candidate reaches a majority those votes are going to come in and that we're going to run the algorithm on the rank

choice votes and we'll see then who appears to be winning at that point of the election, but that means we still have a lot more votes to count. so dan and i'm as you mentioned those latest numbers were just released oakland city councilmember lauren taylor has just over 16,000 votes for 35% of the vote shang tao is in second place with just under 14,000 votes or about 29% now, here's where it gets a bit complicated. these numbers are just the first round votes this rank choice voting results will be in after 6 pm. also, they still haven't counted all the ballots and they don't know how many ballots are left of course comparison in 2018 the election for oakland. mayor 158,000 books were casted lauren taylor is in the lead, but with just 42,000 votes counted and once all the boats are in they then have to go through ranked choice voting. the alameda county registrar voters office tell me it won't be until monday that they have their next big update reporting

live on san jose abc 7 news. answer. thank you. and i do want to add that we did reach out to shang tao. she did not return our request for comment. lauren taylor's team says they will release a statement later this evening and if we says his team will be working through the weekend and hope to have a big update on monday. well, san francisco remains busy counting ballots from tuesday's election in its latest update the department of elections says they received thousands of additional ballots by mail and from dropboxes. there are a couple of races that are still up in the air brooke jenkins holds the lead for district attorney, but she has not hit the required 50% to avoid a runoff. i'll ballots have to be counted before december 9th. and with so many races still outstanding you can check results as they come in find every race and measure now on abc 7 news com slash elections. let's turn to the stock market wall street surge to its best day in years closing with a big rally the dow jump more than 1200 points the nasdaq and it's

760 points higher and the s&p 500. so it's biggest one-day gain ever adding five and a half percent of its value now. this comes after a report showed inflation in the united states slowed last month by even more than expected abc news reporter reena roy has more a potential sign of hope in thursday's new inflation numbers the labor department saying prices are up 7.7% compared to a year ago, which is still historically high but better than economists expected remember back in june we were at 9.1% so this is definitely some welcome relief used car prices clothing costs and medical care all seeing a drop president biden touting the new numbers as progress on slowing inflation claiming. it's a sign that his administration's economic policies are working but americans are still feeling the pain when it comes to rent gas and groceries the typical household in this country needs to spend 433 more a month on the same goods and services as they

executives announced resignations today according to reports the interim head of advertising as well as the head of trust and safety. you'll roth quit and roth just recently showed support for elon musk's new policies in his tweets the chief information and security officer put out their resignation on twitter saying i'm so proud of the privacy security and teams work it teams and the work we've done other company leaders announced resignations yesterday musk sent his first company-wide email in which he officially put an end to all remote work requiring employees to come into the office at least 40 hours a week and this is a tweet that he put out earlier. today so far. he hasn't addressed any of the news that came out today, but you can see there. he says usage of twitter continues to rise one thing is for sure. it isn't boring now in his email. he said there's no way to sugarcoat the message the economic picture ahead is dire adding that without significant

fast forward to 2022 hundreds of flywheel taxi drivers are now working with uber. that's at is. over head is a flower wheel what happenedawi has been a taxi driver for 25 years we rode with him for about 15 minutes during the timeframe. he got more requests from uber than he could accept on flywheel. normally he gets one request every 45 minutes a lot of drivers go work with uber but look at this and that's number eight but getting to this point wasn't easy many of his colleagues have left the taxi industry and alindawi owes a hundred and seventy thousand dollars on his taxi medallion something regular over drivers don't have to worry about you are one of the taxi drivers who will post working with uber. i was here i changed. the business dead i mean, we don't have a business like we used to before. according to flywheels san francisco at one point had over

700 medallions in the last five years 354 closed. they believe a lot of those drivers left the industry during the pandemic they say this maybe they're saving grace. better for us to work with them and come together and you know serve the city here in san francisco. so if you can beat them join them and i guess that's what you can say. you can be them join them. the one year pilot program is uber's way to get more drivers on the app saying part. we look forward to learning from writer and driver feedback about this pilot as we work towards our goal of getting every taxi and uber by 2025 that's good if they are doing all together so no competition, so it's good as for halloween now, we today is a good day. but tomorrow that's tbd. so partnering up. is it worth it even with a medallion? i don't know yet, but let's be honest with you. more business always good for us in san francisco lose pena abc 7

not settled with the vta. a former pittsburgh police officers facing charges for selling an illegal assault weapon the contra costa district attorney's office filed charges today against the former officer armando montalvo faces four counts for possessing ar-15 rifles and selling them to two seperate people the contra costa county da's office says both of those sales happen in november of 2019. the crimes weren't discovered until this year in the officer resigned during the investigation. there was a warrant out for the former officers arrest the city of san francisco continues to expand its street ambassadors program today, mayor, london breed and supervisor myrna milgar announced they are bringing the program to the west portal neighborhood retired police officer ambassadors have previously been focused on tourist areas like union square and fisherman's wharf with this latest edition of up to 25 more ambassadors. they will be deployed to more residential neighborhoods. so i who will know our patterns

francisco where he catches a downtown bus to get to a shipyard job. i work all shift days graveyard swing. he says the same goes for his coworkers right now. bart is looking to hear from people like lugo they just released this survey called bart metro 2030 and beyond it asks people if they would take bart more if they added a sixth line and if they added trains after 9 pm the two options would expand east bay service during daylight and early evening hours and expand evening service in the core of its system. what happens during all seven days now is we go to from a five-line service during the day and again the early evening at 9pm it goes to three line service. so one of the interesting possibilities here is a chance to expand that evening service and to have more transmate trips bart spokesperson, chris philippi says in order to do that. they would look at adding a portion of the red line from richmond daily city that would continue past 9 pm and also add a portion of the green line from bayfair to daly city and that would be a big thing for folks

that works wing shift. that's something that we've seen during the pandemic especially for folks going to downtown san francisco in downtown oakland working at bars and restaurants bart is still working to recover ridership following the pandemic as of last month ridership is at 40% of pre-covid expectations with that in mind. we asked where would funding for any potential service expansions? come from bart says they're looking at different options, but that nothing has been finalized yet billy. i keep part of getting that funding is having a clear roadmap and knowing what our riders want us to do. so this is an important step in that process when we talk to lawmakers. this is something that they want to hear. they want to know that our writers are on board with this the public has until november 23rd to take the survey to find it and more information. you can head to bart.gov slash metro in the south bay zach 7 news. young people in the bay area are demanding bold climate action, and that comes as our global leaders tackle climate change at

cop 27 hundreds of local middle and high school students marched in the financial district today and near the embarcadero. they're calling for effective climate action and an end to militarism and profiteering they chanted and held signs reading fund our future and defund violence. the students were joined by veterans labor and peace groups as well making there voices heard. yes. all right another day sunset behind us. yeah gorgeous sunset and very cool out there tonight meet herologist. sandy patel is over the forecast. yeah, dan and alma and it's only going to get colder tonight. but before we get to that chill, let's talk about the drought. you know, we've had some rain this week with that storm. that brought us healthy amounts. did we see an improvement you betcha it wasn't huge, but we did see some minor improvement for full detour to d4 category came down about 3.74 percent. so you look at the statewide picture and there has been some improvement same thing for our

local area. of course this took years to make so we're not going to get rid of the drought with one storm, but certainly saw some improvement in most categories. look at how stunning it is as i'mma mentioned from our santa cruz camera. the sun set is just absolutely beautiful from our vollmer camera as well zephyr coe from tahoe. you can see that golden gate bridge nice looking view with a mix of high clouds out there and as we look at live doppler 7, it's just some high clouds passing through the bay area temperatures right now in the 50s of 48 degrees los gatos temperatures have been running below average for this time of year in the afternoon hours, and that's not going to change anytime soon. we do have a frost advisory once again going up from 12 am to 9 am tomorrow. it covers all of the bay area except san francisco bay shoreline and coast 30 to degrees solano county even colder for the rest of the area shaded here upper 20s to mid-30s frost will form and that means it could kill sensitive plants. so make sure you cover them this

download it when you get a moment finally tonight the latest movie from oakland native. ryan kugler is hitting theaters today golden state warriors hosted 400 oakland public school students for an early screening. yeah. it was very cool abc 7 news reporter ryan curry talked with them before the showing of wakanda forever. oakland unified students are excited to see another movie designed to break down barriers for the black community wakanda forever debuts thursday night, but the golden state warriors took students from several oakland schools to see the movie before premiers. it's not a lot of movies where they support the black culture like that on the big sign of the grand lake theater oconda forever as a tribute to the franchises oakland roots. the director of black panther is an oakland native and featured many connections to the city throughout the movie now with wakanda forever debuting oakland students are excited to see the franchise continue after the first movie set a new milestone for having a mostly black cast white soxian like a black hero
