results released this evening by alameda county. >> as you mentioned those numbers were just released an hour ago. loren taylor is in the lead with 16,400 votes or 35%. second place is shank how with just under 30%. these numbers just represent first round voting. we are told ranked choice results will be updated within the hour. now for some comparison. in 2018 150 8000 votes were cast in the oakland mayor's race. taylor is in the lead with 42,000 votes counted. once all the votes are in, they have to run it through the ranks choice process. the race for oakland's next mayor is down to two. the city council mayor pro tem and the candidate in the lead, lauren taylor pillar -- loren

taylor. >> i know that is the same way we will drive forward in addressing challenges. >> taylor spoke to abc 7 news at his watch party. taylor has consistently held a small lead but the race is far from over. >> those ones that were dropped off close to election day have not been counted yet. those are what we are starting to process. >> tim is with the alameda county register of voters. the vote for oakland mayor is done by rank-choice voting which extends the process. the candidate with the fewest votes is eliminated. everyone who put up for that candidate has their next choice counted. the process continues until a candidate reaches a majority. >> those votes are going to come in and then we are going to run the algorithm.

from mayor for san jose and sheriff of santa clara county are still undecided. for the san jose mayoral race matt meehan is ahead of cindy chavez. he has 51% of the vote. for the santa clara county sheriff's race, the latest numbers show bob johnson ahead. 51% ahead to >> johns -- as time ticks by, everyone waits to hear who will be the next mayor of san jose and sheriff of senate dare county. matt may hand and bob johnson took early leads. talented -- touted may many as outsider candidates. someone who has a new look is exactly what voters have been looking for. >> i think it is clear the voters want new leadership. one with a person -- a fresh perspective. >> i think they want us to acknowledge on homelessness,

disgruntled coworker before he took his own life. the lawsuit claimed vta should have known earlier the gunman was angry and dangerous. this afternoon a federal judge in texas knocked down president biden's student loan forgiveness plane. a trump appointee called the program, unconstitutional. the lawsuit was filed by a conservative group on behalf of two borrowers who have substantial college debt but did not qualify for the program which offers up to $20,000. the biden administration can appeal. >> a huge moment for wall street today. stocks had their single best day since 2020 because of a report showing inflation eased some in october. the dow rose more than 1200 points. the daz deck closed with a 760 point increase.

investors were reacting to the latest inflation report. the consumer price index rose 7.7% compared to october of last year. that is the smallest increase since january and the forest -- the fourth straight month of declines. inflation is still higher than they want and the fed is expected to raise interest rates one more time this year to try to slow it down. >> underage of students took to the streets of downtown san francisco today it all around the world people are pushing for climate action. suzanne fawn has the story. >> they are young. some of the youngest protesters you have ever seen. >> their spirit is amazing. >> but they are hoping to make a big impression. hundreds of them chanted. they marched through san francisco today for change. they are on a climate strike.

>> some tragic breaking news in san jose were a motorcyclist has been killed in a crash with an suv. sky 7 was over the scene a short time ago. what is left of the motorcycle is on its side. a terrible collision. san jose police say the driver of the suv stayed on the scene and is think -- and his corp. writing with investigators. this is the city's 57th fatal traffic collision this year. intersection is closed because of the investigation. >> where the latest numbers in the race for oakland mayor. city councilmember lauren taylor has 53.3% of the vote. these results take into account several rounds of rank-choice voting for the most recently counted ballots. the registrar still has a lot of

are walking around not actively using your phone. >> the agent pointed out smartphone apps use data even when it no one is using them. a refresh in the background updating content like new emails or social media posts. consumer cellular advises customers to put phones in airplane mode while abroad and only use wi-fi to connect to services. >> they certainly did not tell us our phones were using up data when they were in our back pockets could >> smartphones let you turn off the ground refresh in the setting stab or turn off cellular data entirely. >> i just learned it from you right now. >> consumer cellular ceo edward evans responded personally to our inquiries about the charges saying people are always floored by surprise charges and it is an issue we are always dealing with industrywide. he advises customers to avoid the charges by swapping the swim cards from one of the country

>> all this year we have been committed to focusing on san francisco's tenderloin as we work to build a better bay area. >> are things getting better as we near the end of the year? phil matier joins us with an update. >> it is not all bad news. we have been watching this for a year. we have been pushing for change and we are starting to see it. it is no secret for years the tenderloin has been a containment zone for a lot of san francisco's problems. the pandemic it became the epicenter for the region's homeless problems as well with rampant drug seat -- rampant drug use and sales on the street. has it gotten better? some say yes. talk -- it all comes down to what block you live on. where money is being spent, there is a difference. at the height of the pandemic, this was the tenderloin. you could not turn a corner without seeing open drug use or open dealing were streets -- or streets lined with tents. fitness is, nonprofits, even the

university of california demanded action. kate robinson is the executive director of the tenderloin community benefit district. there's been a lot of attention paid. has it paid off? >> i would say yes. i have been in this neighborhood for 13 years. really solid at its worth -- i really solid at its worst during the beginning of the pandemic. i have never seen such neglect in my life. >> it was pretty amazing. it was jaw-dropping so it had to get better. >> it had to. we saw what i think was the bottom. i remember feeling really terrified for the neighborhood children to go back to school and wondered what is going to happen. and feel like the city and the community really came together and marched to city hall. residents, families saying

enough is enough here. and that is when the mayor declared the emergency. > but we are still seeing the tents. >> but this is dramatically improved and we are in the area outside of where urban alchemy is operating. they to me where the game changer. >> urban alchemy is a nonprofit that puts regular people on the streets instead of police to address the tenderloin's most basic problems. according to robinson their presence has changed the atmosphere on the blocks they patrol. the street ambassadors have cleared the way to clear things up. >> they really engage with people to create safe spaces. so it is possible for others to do the work that we do in activating spaces. >> and you can now literally see the difference in the tenderloin.

i want to show you something. across the street is one of the ambassadors that keeps an eye on things. notice how clean the street and sidewalk is? the end here. take a look at the rest of the street. what is the difference between these two blocks? >> urban alchemy is the difference between these two blocks. >> what does that mean to the viewer? > it means urban alchemy is present on the south side of eddy street and south of here as well as midmarket and that is where we see really active clean and safe spaces. >> why aren't they up there? > funding. > so we only have enough to do half the tenderloin or a quarter of the tenderloin? >> yeah. >> the city has provided $4 million to fund community based improvement projects. >> this is the urban alchemy oasis. this used to be a parking lot with a lot of negative activity. > this used to be a thieves

market and a homeless camp. i remember it. > this is the transformation. >we see a lot of residents come and bring their dogs. it is one of the few dog parks in the neighborhood. a lot of people come and have meetings here or have their lunch here. it is in open space for anybody. >> across the street, city funding helps to pay for monitors to watch children play in playgrounds they would not have gone year -- gone near a year ago. this is w another one of your successes. >> absolutely. this is renovated right before shelter-in-place began to it is active until 8:00 p.m. with children and families. we have hundreds of visitors to the park's nearby residents accessing the parks every day. >> this was ground zero for a lot of the drug dealing and a lot of the tents right here.

this was it. >> this was it. >> can we honestly report this is the way it is seven days a week now? >> yes. >> part of the plan to keep it that way comes from a program called safe p passage. the tenderloin has been home to some of the most dangerous streets for pedestrians in the city. > it is an incredible operation. we are focused on training ourselves to be safe when we are looking after each other safety. and of really connecting with people when we are out here and changing what it feels like for a child to walk home from school. changing what their memories of growing up in the tenderloin would feel like and knowing that they are looked after. >> where there is more presence, there is more change. >> this is also an example of transformation. >> this used to be a post office.

>> yes. >> now it is what? >> a food hall. it is a community space. it has seven different businesses inside three nonprofit. >> when it you guys opened up? >> we opened officially last year. all of the women in this space are low income women of color and women who have started their and businesses. we get people from the community, residents, folks from city hall, folks from local nonprofits. it is a nice community hub. > two people feel safe coming here? > i would say sold. -- i would say so. this building was not showing any love. that invites in folks to take over. our charge and a coming into the space was now only to create a welcoming safe inviting community space. not only to create economic opportunity and ownership to these businesses but positively activate the corner and make it

a place that enhances and brings up the neighborhood and makes it a place where folks want to come by and come inside. >> just about -- not just about getting people to come inside. it is about quitting place outside for folks who live here where they can go and feel safe. what are we looking at? > this is safe passage part. -- safe passage part. it is an extension of the sidewalk. it is an ability to activate open spaces. it is reclaiming the streets for the residents and the stakeholders and the tenderloin. >> about a year and a half ago they said they cannot step outside their house because they did not feel safe walking on the sidewalks. >> when this opened up there were programs offered by the salvation army. there were special events being held. it became this thing where it is a safe -- a space where people can be a part of what is happening in the neighborhood. there are people who come here

and use the space to sit down. it is a reprieve from what happens and the tenderloin to >> most of the money to fund these programs is coming from the city but for those on the ground here it is the people who live here and work here that are making the real change happen. >> people refer to this neighborhood as a containment zone. the good things in this neighborhood also get contained. nobody outside of the neighborhood here every day gets to see there is collaboration like i have never experienced before and care and cooperation like i have never experienced before. it exists here. that is what gives us the hope and shows us this is possible. we just need more support to sustain it. >> so the big take away is things are looking better in the tenderloin. they almost had to. he could not have gotten much
