tropical depression nicole weakened as it barrelled into georgia overnight. but they're warning of tornados and downed trees today, the storm still packing 40 miles per hour winds. hurricane nicole made landfall in florida where authorities say 49 beach front buildings have been deemed unsafe, including 24 hotels and condos at risk of collapsing. >> the structure damage along our coastline is unprecedented. we've never experienced anything like this before. >> the storm surge slamming florida's east coast where hurricane ian slammed ashore just six weeks ago. >> this was a tplace to sit and watch the beach. now this house is sitting on exposed pilings and this is the back of the house's garage. only thing left is the garage

door, the floor and everything else washed away. in the daytona beach area, several people were evacuated before homes buckled into the ocean. >> this home yesterday i was in the living room, that is now in the ocean. they used to have a deck and 100 feet before you hit water. this is how fast erosion can change a coast. >> the storm covered nearly the entire state of florida. the whipped up surf near st. augustine forming sea form and this bench floating away. and objects moving throughthe floodwaters. >> a couple sharks. >> but he believes it was debris from a staircase not sharks. the storm could dump six inches of rain in georgia before moving to ohio and the northeast today. a federal judge in texas has blocked president biden's

student debt relief plan which was already on hold. the judge declared the program unlawful saying it you as you were -- usurped congress' power. the biden administration is now appealing. we turn now to the midterm election. it looks like votes will be counted in arizona throug the weekend. >> the waiting game continues in nevada as well. the senate race getting closer overnight but still too early to call. >> mark kelly expanded his lead but only 80% of the vote has been counted. and that means no winner in the governor's race either. kari lake has criticized election officials but they say they're following the law. >> reporter: this morning key races have yet to be called. meanwhile, former president trump is escalating his attacks on florida governor ron desantis.

overnight democrats in arizona once again expanded leads in two high stakes races after officials released a new batch of ballots from maricopa county, katie hobbs leading kari lake and mark kelly building on his lead in the senate race but not enough to call a winner. >> these races are too early to call. >> reporter: also no projection yet in nevada's senate race. officials say the slow pace of vote counting is normal. >> there's nothing wrong with what's going on. this is the process. it's been like this for years. >> reporter: why do these states take so long? voters in arizona and nevada can drop off mail-in ballots on election day. in nevada ballots can be counted if they arrive as late as tomorrow and in arizona voters in maricopa county dropped off nearly 290,000 ballots on

election day alone. >> all of those ballots have to be signature verified by arizona law and that's taking a little bit more time. because of this, officials said they will continue counting the vote through the weekend and expect results by early next week. >> reporter: the senate race in georgia also not over. raphael warnock and his republican challenger herschel walker heading to a runoff. texas senator ted cruz joined walker at a rally last night. >> we're in overtime. maybe got a runoff. hey, i was built for this. >> reporter: president biden before leaving on an overseas trip said there's a small chance democrats can hold onto power in the house. he denied acknowledging a republican victory during his call with house leader kevin mccarthy. >> he congratulated me. >> reporter: meanwhile, former

president trump is ramping up criticism of florida governor ron desantis, his potential 2024 primary rival. trump calling desantis an average governor with great pr, claiming desantis came to him in desperate shape back in 2017 with low approval, bad polls and no money. trump adding he fixed desantis' campaign which had completely fallen apart. sources close to former president trump called his attacks on desantis a miscalculation and described trump unhinged in the wake of tuesday night's election results. one of trump's top aides said, quote, his overreaction of desantis is making things even worse. wall street is welcoming the latest news on inflation. a new report shows inflation cooled off slightly last month still energy prices are still more than 17% higher than last year. food prices nearly 11% higher

and rents up 7.5% over last year. the federal reserve is expected to race interest rates again next month in hopes of bringing down prices. federal officials are reportedly investigating the collapse of a top crypto currency exchange. ftx was valued at $32 billion the last year but crashed in the last few days prompting a halt on customer withdrawals. some withdrawals resumed but customers fear they won't be able to access their money. >> ftx was an exchange that had a bright sheen on it. it was led by a ceo that was often on capitol hill and being photographed with regulators and lawmakers. so there was a sense that the exchange was very buttoned up. >> tom brady and gisele bundchen are among shareholders, unclear how much they could lose. the pentagon announced

ended at this day care children. officers in warren, ohio tried to pull him over, he knocked his way into the day care center where he was finally arrested. more hospitals across the country are overwhelmed trying to treat children with rsv and now new figures show flu cases are also surging. this morning the cdc says flu cases, hospitalizations and deaths have nearly doubled in the last week with 1,300 deaths so far this season. and hospitalizations at historic highs. these 14 states, most of them in the south, along with new york city and washington d.c. are seeing very high levels of flu activity. doctors now once again pushing people to get their flu shot and reinforcing the message to pregnant women among whom vaccination rates are down this year. meanwhile, this moment showing police in missouri reviving a

allegations. we turn to a remarkable discovery. divers have uncovered wreckage from a 1986 space shuttle challenger disaster. >> reporter: this morning the discovery under sea of a large section of the space shuttle challenger, which exploded more than three decades ago. >> an aircraft, i think we need to talk to nasa. >> reporter: divers for a history channel documentary found the piece searching for world war ii wreckage. nasa confirmed it is part of the shuttle which broke apart shortly after liftoff in 1986 killing all seven on board. >> the discovery of this piece was mixed emotions. first reflected back to 1986 and the loss of our colleagues, friends, and heroes. but it's also a sense of discovery. >> reporter: the piece is estimated to be at least 15 by 15 feet. but since some of it is buried

under the sand the true size isn't known yet. it's one of the biggest pieces found since the accident. so far about 47% of the entire shuttle has been recovered. it was determined challenger was brought down by seals in the right booster which eroded due to the cold temperatures on launch day. nasa says it will now determine how to safely remove the wreckage and learn from it for future missions. >> the hard sacrifice that was made by the crews of space shuttle challenger and columbia will now be shared with people in the future. >> the family of the seven crew members killed have been notified of the discovery and have asked for privacy. the history channel documentary airs november 22nd. coming up, no ordinary shoes. the special sandals going up for
