to climb and how the stock market is responding. also this morning, there was a big blow to the white house overnight, the latest on president biden's student debt relief plan with millions of americans now stuck in limbo. we'll begin with the deadly storm nicole. the scope of the damage just becoming clear. florida hit hard, the storm is far from over. victor oquendo starts us off in daytona beach. good morning, victor. >> reporter: good morning, george. nicole has left but the danger has not. there is still a very real possibility of even more collapses. this is one of the 49 buildings deemed unsafe and let's take you right up to our drone. you can see part of the seawall and the parking lot here collapsing, and as we fly north, building after building sustaining some kind of damage. everyone being told to stay off of the beach. officials warning if you go anywhere near the beach you are putting your life in jeopardy. this morning, the remnants of hurricane nicole barreling north after pummeling florida with winds of up to 75 miles per hour. the rare november storm leaving a trail of destruction across florida.

at least four people killed and dozens of homes damaged or destroyed. authorities now declaring 49 buildings unsafe in volusia county including two dozen hotels and condos calling the structural damage unprecedented. shawn wood managing the dream inn in daytona beach shores and he just finished repairs after hurricane ian. >> this is our pool deck. we had these tiki huts there. that's our pool. a bunch of lounges and chairs which we just painted and redid from the damage from ian. >> what did it sound like when it came crashing down? >> it sounded like a semi hit the wall. it was abnormally loud. it was unbelievable. i've been on this coastline from south florida to here my entire life, 48 years and never seen anything remotely close to it. >> reporter: nearby powerful waves and storm surge beating away foundations along the coastline, the erosion causing multiple homes to collapse into the ocean. this swimming pool dangling on the edge.

and with so much of the seawall and the coastline torn apart there is the concern of more collapses especially with the ground as unstable as it is, first will come the inspections and then the repairs, we're looking at a very long recovery process here. amy. >> yeah, those pictures are overwhelming. thank you so much that. our senior meteorologist rob marciano is in atlanta with the latest on the track of this storm. good morning to you, rob. >> reporter: hey, good morning, amy. the center of nicole is still over 100 miles away from atlanta but the rains here have started to arrive in atlanta, georgia. traffic ongoing in peachtree street. lot of school districts have closed in anticipation of this storm. it's kind of front-ready the northern part of where most of the action is. the tornado threat will be ongoing today, huge watch box

from myrtle beach up to virginia beach into richmond until at least 3:00 today so that will make this storm dangerous as will the wind threat for georgia and the smokey mountains, some trees and power lines down. it will arrive in the mid-atlantic today. across the northeast a bit of a mess. >> all right, rob, we thank you, as always. we want to turn to the alarming flu spike. the cdc says so far this season there have been nearly 3 million illnesses, 23,000 hospitalizations and 1,300 deaths from the flu. those numbers nearly doubling from a week ago, our erielle reshef is at a hospital here in new york. good morning to you, erielle. >> reporter: good morning to you, t.j. new york city, d.c. and 14 states are reporting very high levels of flu-like activity and, of course, this is coming as children's hospitals across this country are already feeling the crush from respiratory viruses like rsv.

this morning, health officials with an urgent warning about the staggering surge in cases of the flu. >> here we are again thinking about and planning for a surge that will be really hard for us to absorb over the next couple of months. >> reporter: the rate of hospitalization for this time of year now the highest it's been in a decade. flu season starting earlier and spiking more dramatically than usual. so far the cdc reporting 23,000 people have been hospitalized, 1,300 deaths. those numbers nearly doubling since last week. right now the south getting hit the hardest as the flu typically starts in the south and works its way north, but flu is on the rise across the country. >> there's a lot of people who think that the increases that are happening now are because there's been a lack of exposure over the last couple of years. >> reporter: and the wave of flu crashing on top of children's hospitals, already overflowing with young patients sick with other respiratory illnesses like

rsv. pediatric hospital bed occupancy at 78%, the highest level nationwide in two years. kansas city mom melody cradles her 9-month-old baby mica who's been in and out of the hospital for a week fighting the virus. >> he was grunting and making a lot of noises when he was breathing, so we knew he was having some trouble. >> reporter: doctors expecting a tough holiday season ahead. >> based on what we're seeing, we're still going to be pretty high levels of transmission around the thanksgiving holidays. >> reporter: this morning, the children's hospital in ann arbor is reporting it's at 100% capacity, they are urging parents there to contact their primary care physicians before visiting the emergency department and they also say that this is particularly alarming because we haven't even gotten to the full impact of flu season yet. george. >> okay, erielle, thanks. we're going to get the latest now on the midterm

elections. control of the house and senate still up in the air. key races too close to call including the senate race in arizona where votes are still being counted and terry moran is on the scene in phoenix. good morning, terry. >> reporter: good morning, george. the counting here continues and there are still hundreds of thousands of ballots left to go and officials here tell us that despite what you might read on social media, that is not evidence of suspicious activity it's normal because 90% of arizonans vote by mail and every one of those ballots has got to be scanned, signature checked and verified by a bipartisan adjudication board. none of that can start until election day and all of it is by state law, so this is normal. overnight another 78,000 votes were counted and reported and that batch of votes really boosting democratic incumbent senator mark kelly. he's up by about six percentage points over his republican opponent blake masters over in the governor's race, those votes boosting katie

hobbs, but this race much coser. republican kari lake has a real path to victory. it'll all come down to votes dropped off on election day, but kari lake is now out there hurling accusations of some dark ordinary arizonians will continue the process of counting votes through the weekend. george? >> terry moran, thanks very much. let's bring in rachel scott for a look at the big picture on where things stand, hey, rachel. >> reporter: hey, george, good morning. it is still a waiting game. control of the senate will come down to just three races, so let's start out west where you just heard from terry moran. as he mentioned the incumbent mark kelly up right now, ahead of blake masters, what we're still waiting for here are about 300,000 votes in maricopa county. this is the county that includes phoenix and about 100,000 votes in pima which includes the area right around tucson.

let's take a look at where things stand in nevada right now. you have an even tighter race between the incumbent catherine cortez masto and the republican adam laxalt who is ahead right now by just under 9,000 votes. what's outstanding in this state, about 50,000 votes in clark county which includes the area right outside of las vegas. that could take up until monday for those votes to be counted. the bottom line, in order for democrats to keep control of the senate outright they got to win both of these races in nevada and arizona, otherwise it's all going to come down to that runoff in georgia, george. >> rachel, what about the house? >> yeah, let's take a look at where things stand in the house. there's still about 20 races that have not been projected and we have our eye on some of the tightest races, including this one right in california's central valley outside of fresno. take a look at this. 267 votes separating these two candidates. we're also tracking a very unexpectedly tight race in colorado. this is lauren boebert's district. she's ahead right now by just over a thousand votes.

this is where things stand at this hour as you know, george. it is a race to get to the number 218. that decides majority in the house. republicans almost there. >> okay, rachel, thanks very much. amy. now to that setback for president biden, the federal judge striking down his student debt relief plan. a key piece of his agenda. our senior white house correspondent mary bruce has the details on that, good morning, mary. >> reporter: good morning, amy. this is a big blow to this president. overnight, a federal judge in texas blocking biden's plan to give millions of americans up to $20,000 in student loan relief. the judge argued that the president had overstepped his authority here. now the white house says they strongly disagree and they have already filed an appeal. but as this fight plays out in the meantime, millions of americans are stuck in limbo. 26 million people have already applied for this program. it is not clear how long the fight is going to last and the key date to watch here is january 1. that is when federal student loan payments are set to restart after a three-year pause for the pandemic. now, the white house says the president is committed to getting americans back on their feet. they think these lawsuits are

politically motivated but it's just not clear, george, if the president is going to be able to keep this key promise to the american people. >> okay, mary, thanks.pamy -- i war in ukraine. ukrainian soldiers have moved into the key city of kherson after putin's troops were ordered to retreat amid new debates over peace negotiations and james longman is on the scene in kherson. good morning, james. >> reporter: good morning, george. we are now in kherson region now that the russians have announced their full evacuation from this area. yesterday we would not have been able to be standing here. this is a village that was right on the front line for months. take a look at the devastation. it is almost absolute. there is shrapnel everywhere. the road is just littered with craters. when the russians withdrew, the ukrainians then took that chance and now they are marching out on kherson city. now, it's very unclear what's actually happening in the city. there is a suggestion there could be ukrainians in kherson right now. the evacuation on the russian part seems to have been very disorganized. some russian soldiers didn't even get their orders to leave

and we have heard reports of some explosions. some having to get boats to get across the river. where does this all leave negotiations? that's still very much a dirty word for the ukrainians. they feel that while so much of their country is still occupied they just cannot talk to russia. amy. >> james longman in ukraine for us, thank you. now to wall street set to open this morning following its best session in two years after the latest consumer price index report showed inflation is slowing down. chief business correspondent rebecca jarvis is here now with more on that. good morning, rebecca. >> reporter: good morning, amy. pwall street likes this sign tht the federal reserve's efforts to cool historic inflation are finally working. prices rose 7.7% in october from a year ago. that is still historically high but they're easing off the records that were set in june when prices were up more than 9% and back then american families were spending almost $500 more a month on the same goods an services as they were the year before. today that number is still higher, but it's not as high. $433 a month more but it's coming down. areas where we're seeing prices

we're right in front of one of the 49 beachfront buildings deemed unsafe after nicole. part of the seawall and the parking lot here just getting washed away. let's take you up to our drone as it flies along the coast here. authorities declaring those 49 buildings unsafe in volusia county including two dozen hotels and condos and calling the structural damage, quote, unprecedented. the rare november storm killing at least four people and there's still danger. officials warning if you go anywhere near the beach you are putting your life in jeopardy. with so much of the seawall on the coastline torn apart there is the concern of even more collapses with the ground as unstable as it is right now. t.j., they're looking at a very long recovery here. >> all right, and we and a lot of folks will be along the way for that recovery helping them out. thank you so much. now we want to turn to the alarming flu spike. according to the cdc the cases, hospitalizations and deaths are nearly doubled from a week ago. let's check back in with erielle reshef at a hospital in new york.

good morning to you, erielle. >> reporter: good morning to you, t.j. new york, d.c. and 14 states reporting very high levels of flu-like activity. the hospitalization rate for this time of the year is the highest it's been in nearly a decade with the flu season starting earlier and spiking more dramatically than usual, the cdc reporting that there have been 23,000 people hospitalized with the flu, 1300 people have died. those numbers double what they were last week and, of course, this wave of the flu crashing on top of children's hospitals already coping with the surge in respiratory illnesses like rsv, children's hospital in ann arbor, michigan, reporting they're at 100% capacity. they are telling parents to contact their primary care providers before bringing their children to the emergency departments. they also say this is incredibly concerning because we haven't even seen the peak of the flu season yet. amy. >> that is concerning, indeed. all right, a warning, erielle, thank you very much. now to the latest on inflation after the latest consumer price index report

showed that it is slowing down. chief business correspondent rebecca jarvis is back with more on that. good morning, rebecca. >> reporter: hi, amy. yeah, this is a sign that the federal reserve's efforts to cool historic inflation are finally working. all of those rate hikes. prices rose 7.7% in october from a year ago. that's still historically high but easing off the record set in june when prices were up more than 9%. so areas where prices are falling, used cars, clothes, medical care and airfare. gasoline, which is down from its peak above $5 a gallon is starting to climb again. groceries and rents also continue to climb. now, the reason that the stock market responded so positively is that this brings down the probability the fed will have to continue with those aggressive rate hikes that make borrowing more expensive, guess what, borrowing is getting cheaper in light of this data. we saw mortgage rates respond yesterday. the 30-year fixed rate plunged from 7.2% to 6.6%. that is better news for would-be home buyers.

outbreak linked to deli meat and cheese with 16 infections reported. there's been one death. another person lost a pregnancy. our medical contributor dr. darien sutton is here and what should people know about this? >> listeria is due it a bacteria associated with almost 1600 hospitalizations every year and approximately 260 deaths and right now we're trying to figure out the exact cause of the current outbreak. we do know as you said it's associated to deli meat but want to focus on those who are high risk which include those who are elderly, those pregnant and newborn children as well as those immune compromised. the cdc recommends these high risk groups specifically avoid things like deli meats until we get more information. >> now, we've seen reports of death, one pregnancy loss. how serious is that risk? >> the overall risk is relatively low for the general population, however, these high risk groups do have an increased risk of hospitalization and do know with hospitalization comes the risk of death approximately 1 in 20. >> what symptoms should people watch out for? >> the acute symptoms of listeria outbreak infection,

whether you can cook your thanksgiving dinner in an air fryer. short answer? >> you can't do the whole thing. as you can see by the size the turkey is bigger so the size is the only limiting factor but doesn't mean it's an awesome workhorse for thanksgiving dinner. >> would there be ways if you cooked not a whole turkey but turkey breast or cut it up? >> absolutely. if you just want to do the breast the air fryer is wonderful. basically a small confection oven. if you cook in your oven and it fits in here it will be great. it is awesome for smaller gatherings which a lot are still doing. >> we shouldn't attempt if i have 40 people coming over to do it in an air fryer. >> yes and no. we can use in salad. we have garlic here, roasted garlic is wonderful and so many applications. we'll use it in this dressing. 400 degrees for just 20 minutes in here and then you can squeeze it out. those gorgeous, gorgeous cloves. >> all right. >> so we'll use some of this in a quick little vinaigrette so we

have a little bit of salt and pepper. which is key for any salad, vinegar in here and we'll whisk in our oil. so this is just a really nice easy way to do it. we won't just stop at the dressing. we have a lot of components for the salad and you can put these to use in other ways, as well. so a little of this dressing on here. >> that smells good. and this is just a lovely salad, obviously thanksgiving needs a salad. a lot of people don't do it but it's important. everything else is heavy and rich. so we also have other components, croutons, we have nuts and seeds all done in the air fryer as well tossed with olive oil and salt and these take one to three minutes. >> okay. >> really simple. >> so as we're thinking about, maybe making the whole meal but even if you don't do the whole meal this can speed up your process and make the cooking easier. >> absolutely, yeah, if you wouldn't mind helping me put

croutons on here. >> where do they go? >> still making the salad. >> a little there. i'll do a few nuts here. >> what kind of salad -- do you call this anything in particular? throwing everything but the kitchen sink in. >> mixed greens in it and nuts and seeds and fruit so it feels really kind of festive and holiday. it's got to compete with a lot of other stuff on the table. >> let's do veggies. veggies could be a good thing. >> brussels sprouts a mainstay. we want them crispy, not steamed and sogged out like the old days. and so the air fryer is fabulous for that and use a little salt and a little bit of oil. >> okay. >> a lot of good stuff there. so we just toss those and go into our air fryer so we go at 350 degrees until they're crispy and take a look here. >> oh, come on. oh, come on. >> those look good, right? >> come on, man. >> beautiful and brown. they get those crispy edges on there. >> how long did that take? >> this took about 20 minutes so

it's really not bad at all. and it frees up your oven. that's the beautiful thing. can you have your turkey in the oven and not worried about the sides. serve with lemon wedges or creamy lemon chive dip. >> sorry, put my hands all in this stuff. i'm sorry. i'm still behind in my air fryer game. is there a large, medium? >> this is a pretty standard size countertop option and really nice with the drawer. very easy to clean and deal with. you can get a toaster oven size but we like these. >> my green bean situation. >> we know green beans are popular on thanksgiving. usually a little more sogged out with mushroom and these cook in the fryer and goat cheese, sundried tomatoes and sesame seeds. >> you're telling me i can make a pie in it. >> close to a pie and so we're actually got this gorgeous apple crisp here and it's fabulous because, you know, it gives you

everything that a pie does basically. we have this oven safe dish in here which is really amazing. anything you put in your oven you can put in an air fryer. a lot of people don't think to do this. to finish up, nice tender apples here and have a little crumble topping here, a little crisp topping, oats and flour. we've got butter in there as well. just kind of mix that up and then we'll top it and so it's a fabulous thing. all this other stuff but it's d- nice to have a lot of variety for desserts, everyone wants something else. you can do this and have something for everyone on the table. >> this is absolutely incredible. look, i have resisted getting it. i'm sorry. this is good. what did you tell me this was here? >> this is a lemon and chive dip. kind of mayonnaise based. really creamy. that's good. >> so good. >> the air fryer does so much. we have a couple of books, we have air fryer perfection which is classics and healthy book also and you can do so much in it and because it's not real deep frying you can use a lot less oil with it. >> folks, don't write in. i know my hands -- i'm not supposed to do this. i'm sorry.

how would you describe the overall premise of this book? >> it's a love story at its core. that's the vein that flows throughout all of the book, love between spouses, love between family, love between friends, so, yes, you're dealing with grief and suicide and death and it is heavy but you have humor in there and at its core you have love. >> this is not a skip through the park. >> no. >> it's a tough novel. what led you to want to explore grief and suicide? >> "someday, maybe" is a bit of a love story to one of my very dear friends, she experienced a similar loss. her husband died by suicide. very unexpectedly and her ask to me was to write about the grief surrounding that and i did as best as i could. i tackled that and poured everything i could, all my love and everything that i felt for her into this novel. >> reporter: eve is messy and at

times unlikable as she struggles to pull herself from the depths of despair despite unshakable support from family and friends. she's got so many people around her who are loving her and trying to lift her up but she doesn't want to be lifted up. she talks about her husband as if he was perfect. >> yeah. >> why did you choose that route and is that typical? >> i think it is a little bit typical. not even just about people that are sadly dying by suicide but people who have died in general, we put them on a pedestal. eve took that to extreme. this man was perfect so i don't get why this happened. she didn't want to move on. she felt it would be betrayal. >> eve is a nigerian londoner and used the igbo language a lot. how important was it to we have in your nigerian culture? >> because it's such a heavy topic and the way nigerians and igbos use customs, i needed to add levity to the story as well.
