counted days after the midterm election. when might know the outcome of some critical races that could shift the balance of congress. it is saturday, november 12. i am liz kreutz. we have drew with us. >> we have some drizzle out. starting with gray conditions. we are finding some of that drizzle on our saturday along the peninsula. we have some drizzle along atherton this morning. this will approach palo alto over the next 20 minutes. we will get sunshine midday. we have a chance of scattered showers but the best chance of that happening is in the north bay. take a couple of layers with you and we have partly to mostly cloudy conditions. we will go hour-by-hour.

>> it stays after election day and several big races in the bay area remain undecided. numbers came out last night in the contest to become the next mayor of san jose. nat may hand is ahead of cindy chavez in a close race. in the santa clara county race, the numbers show bob johnson ahead. for the san francisco district attorney race, they release the latest totals late friday afternoon. bro jenkins is in the lead at 47% -- brooke jenkins is in the lead at 47%. there will be a runoff if no one hits 50%. oakland, we are expecting an update on the mayor's race monday. nationally to the race for the control of congress. democrat mark kelly is projected to win his senate race in arizona. it is a big win overnight for democrats, now one seat away from keeping control of the senate. all eyes are on nevada, where the race is still too close to call.

mark kelly is a former astronaut and husband of former congresswoman gabby giffords. pb republican candidate blake masters, backed by former president trump. president biden reportedly called kelly to congratulate him. developing news on hurricane nicole. reported at a category one that hit the coast of florida. people are starting the work to clean up what they can after major flooding and damage. abc news reporter christine sloan has more on the aftermath. >> along the east coast, people cleaning up after the remnants of hurricane nicole, the storm causing tornado sirens to sound in richmond, virginia. >> look here at the lightning strikes. those really cycling up. >> in boone, north carolina, heavy rain flooding roads. in philadelphia, travel delays and flood cancellations. >> we had to rebook our flight because of the storm. >> rob marciano says, once the

heavy rain clears, parts of the country will experience cold weather. >> heavy rain through western parts of pennsylvania and upstate new york. we could see more isolated flooding. behind this, once it does clear, we look for much colder air to ro ibehind nicole made landfall thursday south of daytona beach, florida, as a rare november category 1 hurricane. the storm destroyed coastlines. dozens of homes and hotels crumbling to pieces or left dangling and uninhabitable. climate scientists say rising seas are making floods further deeper inland, making once in a century incidents like this almost yearly. >> the structural damage along our coast line is unprecedented. we have never experienced anything like this. >> christine sloan, abc news, new york.

>> the number of flu cases in the u.s. is bad and getting worse according to the cdc. the latest numbers show more than 3 million cases already across the country with 23,000 hospitalizations and 1300 deaths. those numbers are nearly double from a week ago. the hospitalization rate this early in the season is the highest it's been in a decade, with flu season spiking earlier and faster than usual. the south is reporting the most cases so far. >> here we are again thinking about everything, preparing for a surge that will be hard for us to absorb over the next couple months. >> the news comes as hospitals face an influx of pediatric patients battling the respiratory virus rsv. that occupancy in pediatric hospitals is at 78%. covid cases are on the rise as well, prompting new warnings from public health directors across the state. the l.a. county public health director says two emerging variants are threatening to fuel a fall and winter surge in cases.

average case numbers have been slowly but steadily increasing since the beginning of november. we want to talk about a very wild story, the swift downfall of the cryptocurrency company ftx ensnaring some big names and companies, including several in the bay area. steph curry was an ambassador. san mateo native tom brady also took part. ftx contracted a $17.5 million deal with uc berkeley last year. cal has not commented since the bankruptcy announcement. the miami heat had a naming rights deal with ftx but they did announce it will be looking for a new sponsor. ftx's founder, sam bankman-fried, is a bay area native. people who work at twitter have had a tumultuous two weeks ever since elon musk bought the company after laying off half the staff. he is telling those who remain they must return to the office, no more remote work. luz pena looks at what this

work from home would like to, then you will not get laid off, but if your employer is doing it begrudgingly, implying you should not work from home, they may get laid off. >> this professor believes if more companies decide to require a full-time return to the office, they could lose talent in the long run. >> if you think you are going to lose your source of income, then, yes, you will go back, but i do think, if you are not ready to go back or you are not interested in going back because you can be even more productive from your home, why wouldn't you be looking for another job? >> stanford economics professor nicholas bloom believes musk is using the work from home excuse to save money. >> musk is looking to thin out twitter, getting people to voluntarily quit so he doesn't have to fire as many people. another view is it is a short run thing because you have to go through a massive change. twitter is changing direction rapidly.

food insecurity no doubt highlighted during the pandemic, a time when second harvest saw demand double to 500,000 people each month. >> it went down to 400000 and we thought that would be the new normal, but with inflation and gas prices and what's happening with the economy, we are around 450,000 every month. >> a real-time reflection. federal data shows grocery prices have jumped 12.4% since the start of the year. with two weeks to thanksgiving, the countdown is on to make every dollar count. >> what we are trying to do is alleviate a little bit of that suffering during the holiday season. >> d mont carter with sacred heart community service says the goal is to distribute 18,500 food boxes and they are asking people to complete the holiday meal by donating. >> frozen chickens, hams, turkeys, canned goods. especially those with pop tops. they are very much in need.

day overseas trip. friday's pleasant weather made for perfect conditions to enjoy veterans day festivities. they had a parade featuring men and women who served back to world war ii. dustin dorsey spoke with a few of the heroes grateful to celebrate their sacrifice with an appreciative community. >> at a time when it appears our country is divided, veterans day offers an opportunity to come together, united to celebrate and thank the men and women who served our country. we cheer, wave and thank them for their service, gratitude that means so much for this korean war veteran, grateful to celebrate for many reasons. >> i didn't expect to come back alive. i was on the front line. and infantrymen didn't last long over there. i was over there during the first anniversary of the war. >> so veterans day is special to you.

the san jose veterans day parade is celebrating its 104th anniversary, a tradition born just before some of the world war ii heroes in attendance today. the holiday gives them a chance to look back on what they fought for, some of them remembering arriving at omaha beach. >> i was only 20 years old when i got on the beach. it was scary. don't forget the sacrifice. >> it brings back memories. we liberated concentration camps in germany, and that was quite a sight for a 19-year-old kid. it was quite an honor. >> during a week dominated by talk of red wave's and blue waves, we were focused on the waving of the red, white and blue and thankful for the freedom it symbolizes because of these heroes. >> these people can vote because of what we did. we have a free country and i can do what i want to do if i come

out here and celebrate veterans day. >> in san jose, dustin dorsey, abc7news. >> as the nation celebrated our troops yesterday, bay area communities were keeping their veterans day traditions alive. in the north bay, thousands gathered for petaluma's annual parade. the event paid tribute to those who served in the korean war, something veterans say they are thankful for. >> it means a lot because i know veterans who lost their lives in vietnam and wherever. by saluting them and celebrating them, it makes us feel good because they sacrifice their lives for us. >> people cheered and waved flags as veterans, service members and city leaders made their way through downtown. ♪ the veterans day event at golden gate national cemetery included plenty of music. u.s. naval sea cadet corps band of the west performed the

service song of each branch of the military. there was a presentation and speeches from active service members and retired service members. holiday favorite reopened in san ramon. the skating rink will stay open for eight weeks. general admission is $21. all proceeds will go toward the always dream program aimed to promote literacy for underserved children. open from noon until 9:30 on weekdays and 10:00 to 9:30 at night on weekends. with the snow, many ski resorts have made the decision to open early. boreal mountain resort open friday, firing off snow guns for three days straight to welcome hundreds of snowboarders and skiers during the holiday season. >> i am feeling great. i am excited. i have been waiting for a long time. snowboarding is my favorite part of winter and i have been waiting.

3000 feet. you can see why people are happy to be heading to tahoe. it is a nice weekend to enjoy the snow. looks kind of moody out. cloud cover this morning, drizzle. it is chilly as well. mid-day sunshine and in the afternoon and evening we could have scattered showers. the best possibility of that is in the north bay and there is that dry stretch of weather tomorrow and for much of the extended forecast. there are pockets of drizzle around discovery bay, around livermore now, and that is about it in terms of wet weather this morning. fog an issue in the north bay. reduced visibility first thing on our saturday. here is the radar along with satellite. you can see the area of low pressure spinning, allowing for a shower in the evening, especially in the north bay.

scattered showers. breezy along the coast. we are seeing a lot of sunshine as we go about our morning. into the afternoon, here is the front bringing clouds and showers into the north bay. watch as the system moves out. it falls apart. 6:00 p.m., increased cloud cover throughout the region, pockets of drizzle. this is a quick mover. by midnight, it is out of here. that leads to a clearer night on the chilly temperatures and a lot of sunshine during the second half of your weekend tomorrow. we are not talking about much rainfall at all. we are talking a few hundredths of an inch. highs today, midday sunshine with increasing clouds in the evening, chance of a shower in the north bay, 60 santa rosa, 59 in the city, 62 in concord, upper 50's on the coast. tonight, everything is out of here, the clouds, the showers. we are done with it.

company's headquarters and invited employees who survived the 50% cut in the company's workforce to return to the office. must has told twitter employees to return to the office or quit. that could make a big difference for local businesses that count on the foot traffic. abc seven news reporter suzanne fon has a look at the impact on san francisco's market street. >> at twitter headquarters in downtown san francisco, on the very first floor is a store open to the public called the market. the owner is chris foley. how many customers a day? >> 6000. >> pre-pandemic, 6000 customers a day, 57% of them twitter employees. now, the market sees only 20% of their shoppers from then. >> they are all worried about what's going to happen. >> there's another reason for some twitter employees to be worried.

for approximately 70% of donations the food bank that's -- the food bank gets. this year, the need is greater. >> it is the perfect storm. many of our most popular programs see an over 50% increase in need so every donation matters. >> this is the director of communications at the food bank. they serve 270 5000 people every month, an increase of 100,000 people per month since last year. >> it's a huge number. >> it includes a 50% increase in seniors and 25% increase in children in need of food. >> what continues to shock me is that 25%, one fourth of the people we serve, our children. that to me is unacceptable. >> part of the increasing need is due to families struggling in the pandemic. then came inflation, which is also impacting the food bank. the director says there's been a 30% increase in the cost of food. turkeys alone are up 40%, a
