4:05 pm
corporate employees. these cuts would be the largest in that company's history. i spoke to an expert who explained why we have to keep a close eye on these layoffs. the wave of tech layoffs continues up next amazon planning to lay off approximately 10,000 employees according to the new york times. we haven't seen these kinds of trend simultaneously maybe ever certainly not in the last 20-25 years. it's not easy to pin, you know the explanation for particular problems on any one thing. we've been through pandemic. there's global inflation. there's a war in ukraine and and energy disruptions in the last couple of weeks twitter laid off approximately half of its workforce meta more than 11,000 employees and now amazon are these the first signs of a looming recession recessions happen because lots of people look to read tea leaves and make decisions based on what they expect to happen. so that's not to say that there can't be a connection a causal connection between what tech companies are doing today and

what the rest of the economy might be doing in six months, but is there a determinative unavoidable relationship there is not but why are companies laying off employees back to back professor posner believes. these companies could be watching what each other are doing and following the trend some of these firms are kind of taking the opportunity to lay off employees because others are already doing it. these layoffs are also creating what psychologists call survivor skilled for those who kept their jobs. there are a lot of challenges anxiety. there are studies that show that people can have some symptoms of similar to ptsd where post-traumatic stress disorder dr. vinc. ent staslay to physical conditions their chemicals in the body that we have that we release that are stress hormones and they're really useful for helping us fight stress in the short term, but they're actually

this rsv this respiratory illness is. and it really does and my heart goes out for the family of this child. you know, it's it's somber reminder of what may seem like a common cold in one person can be absolutely devastating for a young infant, you know when you think about rsv we know that under the age of six months children who have rsv have about a one to two percent chance of becoming hospitalized and fortunately death is rare, but those kids who are young kids who are born premature who have heart or lung disease are at risk for severe illness, which is why we all have to kind of keep our guards up it even the kids who don't become severely ill can still overcrowd our already strain healthcare system, which is why you are seeing all those harrowing pictures right now a full er's urgent care is in pediatric icu's what dr. phil what should parents watch out for when does it go from a cold or something that they wouldn't ordinarily worry about to something they should be concerned about what should they look for? then i'm so glad you asked that question because it's important that parents just take a deep

breath. stay calm and remember that the majority of these cases will resolve on their own and parents should not go to an emergency department unless it really does look like an emergency. so what to look out for is kids who are breathing really fast or using their chest muscles to try to move air almost seem like they're struggling to kind of catch their breath because if you think about it dan hour tubes in our lungs those little bronchioles they're designed to be clear and freely expand and constrict constrict as you breathe now imagine that tube is rigid and filled with mucus. that is what can happen with rsc that inflammation and that's why we'll see those kids really struggling so parents see that if you're parental instinct says, oh my gosh, this looks like a problem go to emergency care asap, but aside from that call your outpatient provider that might be better for you. okay talk a little bit about the flu oh cases on the rise rates are higher than usual for this time of year. what's happening? what's happening is a lot of unknowns right now dan, but you're absolutely right. we are seeing a earlier and

faster influenza spike. we are on par to be as bad as we were over a decade ago during the h1n and one pandemic in 2009 now influenza a seems to be the dominant string which is usually associated with a worse flu season that you take that that randomness of this flu strain into account with the fact that we are kind of lifting all preventative measures and we have a setup for a lot of flu cases which are starting to rise, especially in the eastern part of the country and potentially could move could move throughout the country as we get to colder months. so anyone out there who is not their flu shot, you know what to do. yeah. well as we remember in the middle of the pandemic, we really didn't have a flu season that we're hardly any flu cases. let's talk about covid for a minute. moderna says it's new by valent of booster shot does what it hopes it would against two covid subariants even better than the original. vaccine this isn't unexpected. obviously, they're getting better at these vaccines as they went along during the pandemic. do you think it will have an effect on vaccination numbers? you know, i i hope it does stand
4:15 pm
i'm gonna be realistic with you and say that i don't know if it's really gonna convince people because what the study actually showed was that there's an increase in the and the production of neutralizing antibodies against these omicron subariants, but it is not peer-reviewed and neither fiser or moderna who had similar results can definitively save the rise of neutralizing antibodies decreases the risk of illness from this new bivalent vaccine that is just simply put what we don't know right now. we don't know how much better it works then the original shots, but what is important? is that the safety data still looks strong and the recommendation it's to still go ahead and get these tailored vaccines against the omicron so very it is your best shot at keeping yourself away from getting severely ill or spreading into someone else this hopefully jam packed holiday season. yeah, that's right. that is a great thing to remind everyone. i've just heard from so many people who've had four shots already who feel like they have vaccine fatigue, but let's hope people go get the shots a little patel. local patel. thanks so much. great to have you with us.

dan thank you. two california tours hotspots are not on a hot list this year a popular travel guide has both lake tahoe and mendocino on their no visit list for 2023. it's all about the environment. but as abc7 news reporter ryan curry found out those communities actually still want you to visit. the beautiful mountains and pristine lake a place where northern california families have vacation for decades but entering next year forters travel website is advising people to reconsider plans to visit lake tahoe nature. sometimes need to break and that we align that's we're aligned with that. that's that's for sure andy chapman with travel north tahoe says it is not about not traveling to lake tahoe, but about being mindful once you are there the travel guide says many people have moved to the tahoe region during the pandemic they say those new residents combined with frequent tourism has led to more traffic and more trash and air pollution now they want you

to give some places in lake tahoe a break. i think a lot of people came up into the mountain destinations that were unfamiliar with how to interact with it with a destination like ours are in the mountains or what to do with their trash or where to park, you know, and we have a responsibility of educating those visitors chapman is not telling people to avoid tahoe all together, but he says visitors should think diligently about how to plan their trip maybe instead of visiting during a holiday weekend. pick a different time. we're talking about off-peak travel, you know, you know, you know fourth of july. it's pretty busy up here, but, you know a wednesday in october. it's a completely different story environmental experts in lake tahoe say, it's mostly a problem with trash being left around. jesse patterson with keith tahoe blues says anyone who visits tahoe should find ways to limit trash and use sustainable modes of transportation. we really do have to think about our cumulative impact the impact that each individual makes added up and so we have to be very very strategic when we come think about how we get here how we get around once we're here and certainly what we leave

after today. i'll be tomorrow and wednesday because of those offshore breezes and unfortunately, the offshore breezes will get a little gusty in our hills and mountains tomorrow into wednesday, but thankfully because of all that rain last week, we'll have to worry about the fire danger. it's going to remain low temperature is outside a little bit below average 58 in san francisco 59 in oakland and vallejo palo alto, san ramon li. or san jose at 62 right now. we have 61 in novato about 60 in napa in fairfield. and we do have a little bit of haze out there but the air quality is going to be good or moderate the next couple of days and look because we have a lack of cloud cover and really dry air how quickly we'll need the heavier coat. we'll be in the 40s almost everywhere by eight o'clock into nine o'clock and maybe an extra blanket on the bed tonight temperatures almost as cold as this morning. you see that offshore breeze really having more of an effect on our higher elevations. that's where you're seeing the green and those are more into the 50s while those of us in the valleys were the cold heavier air will sink will be in the 40s in the north bay over in the east bay and wouldn't be

surprises some cities around redwood city in the south bay also drop into the upper 30s. nice rebound at tomorrow temperatures will warm into the mid to upper 60s on tuesday with that moderate air quality. so here's the weather pattern and it's kind of a stagnant pattern. you've got look at this clockwise flow of top that's high pressure counterclockwise with that low, and you can see the offshore breeze and that's coming over land and that's a dry and fairly mild pattern as the air as it descends down the hills. it tends the warm a little bit as it compresses. you can see tomorrow morning waking up with the fastest winds are up in the hills not only in the north bay where they'll be fastest, but also the east bay and down along say skyline boulevard on the peninsula. they're fastest around noon through the afternoon hours down where most of us live, but then you can see as we head into tomorrow night. they'll be even faster and then as we added to wednesday afternoon. they'll finally start to taper. but again, thankfully the fire threat will be minimal. what will be nice by-product of this. look at these temperatures back
