moving forward finding solutions. this is abc 7 news the sombrerter bear announcement late today finding from the california department of public health seven new. as i said a somber announcement today from public health as the agency reported the season's first death of a child under the age of five due to the flu and rsv. good evening. i'm dan ashley and i'm on a dates health officials have been warning that the rsv season began early than usual this year and cases along with flu and covid increased last month. that's right. an abc 7 news. anchor karina. nova is in the newsroom with more on this story karina. well today the california department of public health reported the first death of a child from flu and rsv. the child was under the age of five and as of right now, that's

all the information we know about this case cdph said this year rsv season as you mentioned began earlier the usual in october rather than december in cases have been on the rise for rsv in children according to the cdc this respiratory virus typically lasts a week or two and resembles the common cold, but some cases can be serious and un nutley as we learned today deadly abc 7 news contributor dr. alok patel explains that death for rsv is rare, but kids who are born prematurely and who have heart and lung disease are at a higher risk for severe rsv. he explained what parents should watch for. it's important that parents take a deep breath. stay calm and remember that the majority of these cases will resolve on their own and parents should not go to an emergency department unless it really does look like an emergency. so what to look out for is kids who are breathing really fast or using their chest muscles to try to move air almost seem like

they're struggling. the advice is not to overcrowd hospitals and only go to the er if it's an emergency start by calling your doctor first according to the department of health and human services this month pediatric hospital beds occupancy across the united states. hit the highest level in two years. there is no vaccine for rsv but doctors advised parents to vaccinate their children against the flu and covid-19. either of those can be dangerous on their own or complicated an rsv infection as we solve with this death of the young child who had both flu and rsv live in the newsroom karina, nova abc 7 news. all right, karina. thank you so much to a growing concern about the flu hospitalizations and deaths have nearly doubled for the second week in a row according to cdc data the latest weekly data says 1.2 million new cases were reported so far this season there have been at least 2.8 million illnesses the latest numbers from october.

can show just under 25% of people got their flu shot that's compared to 32% in october of 2020 and here's an illustration from the cdc that highlights the concern that line on the far left shows the trajectory this year of the number of people going to the doctor with flu symptoms compared to previous years and you can see those numbers are growing much faster now than in the past year new details from moderna today as the company announced that it's new. valent booster shot works better against two covid sub-variants then its original vaccine. the company says the new booster shot triggered antibody responses against the ba-4 and ba-5 sub-variants that were about 15 times higher compared to the original vaccines. there's all very encouraging there were also fewer adverse reactions to the shot this new data echoes similar data released by fiser earlier. this month investigators are blaming smoking materials for a

fast-moving fire that killed an elderly woman and her adult son this morning and walnut creek the fire started inside a ground floor unit of the country wood townhomes off treat boulevard and bancroft road around 6:30 officials. say the fire spread quickly do in part to an oxygen canister that exploded making it impossible to reach the two victims on the second floor firefighters. say this kind of blaze can serve as an important reminder for everyone. use your smoke detectors make sure they're working and keep your bedroom doors closed when you sleep it can limit the spread. so if it comes up a hallway or it spreads from room to room if the doors are closed it's going to buy you time for us to get here and get you out. a small dog also died in the fire a total of three units were damaged. half of san francisco's broadway tunnel is closed right now after a truck's crane struck tiles at the on the roof of the tunnel. you can see the truck right here. the fire department says there is no structural damage. so that's a good news, but they are figuring out how to remove the truck.

it's wedged in there. this is only affecting the eastbound side heading into chinatown north beach and toward the embarcadero. recent attacks at gunpoint on photographers at a popular san francisco tourist destination have some professionals saying they won't return to the city as abc's 7 news anchor dion lim tells us some are taking other major precautions and demanding change terrifying witness video shows a dallas-based wedding photographer outside the palace of fine arts last week fighting off an attempted robbery at gunpoint in front of the bride and groom. i was just crying all the time. another photographer's belongings were stolen at gunpoint at the same location on the very same day this and a number of as i've covered in the past year highlight the dangers for professional photographers shooting in popular tourist destinations in san francisco. this video used in the police investigation in march shows a canadian crew. that was robbed of 35,000 in

cars. we were able to successfully employ a tactic that we have developed where we essentially block them in that required over a hundred officers sergeants in lieutenants. police say they blocked in over 500 vehicles and issued over 720 citations. 82 of them were juvenile citations. they impounded 19 vehicles that were left at the scene two were stolen and will be released to their owners the cost for the owners of the 17 other cars to be taken out of impound could be between three to four thousand dollars renee. karimian is the father of a six and nine year old. he shot this us police blocked the cars in he tells us that when spectators started running some ran into his apartment complex. they knocked the bomb by wander residence door and then running away. he says he's called the cops multiple times over the years to report side shows and says, he's glad that the police tactic worked. i live in here for seven years. i never saw this before. so this time looks like they've been serious. hopefully they continue this police say they have to and will

impacted in college a lot of the labs remember and research outside of the classroom is always handled by a graduate student. this comes as students are headed towards finals without what many call the backbone of the university system. when we strike when we strike of the 10 ucs berkeley had the most student employees walking out today with 9,000 ucsf had nearly 3,000. these are postdoctoral scholars teaching assistants and graduate students who do research we do a bulk of the teaching and a bulk of the research here and you see works because we do the bottom line is that many of them don't make enough money to live in the bay area. i make 17 dollars and three cents many rose green is a graduate student who grades college papers for professors. i'm not ashamed to be on food stamps because i need to you know, i need these resources, but it's shameful that an institution that's respected

worldwide is making us live in these conditions. the uc system is offering them a 7% increase the first year and 3% a year after that these student employees are also demanding better benefits like additional child care and healthcare for dependents. --. i'm a woman with a phd with decades of experience in organizing and research. i think we need to be paid more. i asked her why not work for a corporation, which would pay more but we're here because we believe in the university of california. we believe in science. and but we are i mean we're just i'm you know, very sad to be here, but i'm also very resolved uc berkeley is also holding firm stating regarding overall campus operations during the strike offices will be open instruction and research will take place and the campus will provide normal or equivalent services. we are the backbone of this university everything from the teaching that we do the mentorship that we do the research that we do we make this

permanently. nathan meisel says a former berkeley police officer alleges. there are text messages between officers with racist and anti-homeless statements and discussions of patterns of unlawful police practices. it's also alleged that lewis had knowledge of this and didn't take action louis issued a statement saying the alleged incidents didn't occur underneath her supervision, and she first became aware of them on thursday. the city says it will hire an external investigator california's first partner and filmmaker jennifer siebel newsome took the stand today in harvey weinsteins. weinstein's sexual assault trial in los angeles, and she told the court she met the media mogul with a group of friends in 2005 siebel newsom. weinstein offered to help her with her career. she began to cry on the stand saying later that year. he invited her to what was supposed to be a business meeting but says he ended up raping her in a hotel room. weinstein has pleaded not guilty to multiple sexual assault charges. after the break we're still

nothing brings the pack together like a trip to great wolf lodge. now open in northern california. definitively know who oakland's new mayor will be but results released this evening show. the frontrunners lead is shrinking a bit after nine rounds of counting and redistributing ranked choice votes city councilmember lauren taylor has about 52% of the vote and city council president pro. tempo has about 48% friday. it was 53 to 47 a vote by mail ballots are slowing down the counting process because of when voters submitted them abc 7 news reporter leslie. leslie. brinkley has the latest it was 10 candidates whittled down to two now with ranked choice voting pitting councilmember lauren taylor against council president xiang tao in the oakland mayor's race. neither candidate would comment today thursday night was the

last tally as election workers got the day off friday for veterans day. i thought the team probably deserved a break a recharge and we pushed through this weekend. to get as much of the vote by mail ready to scan through our scanners today and this week turnout in alameda county hit. 50% and the registrar said it's the vast number of vote by mail ballots that's slowing down the counting to put this in perspective. we have 930,000 voters in alameda county and only 30,000 of the votes that we've received were in person votes. that's over 4. 50,000 male ballots use half mailed or dropped off in advance the other half hand delivered on election day validating signatures is the challenge there were hopes of counting up to 40,000 additional ballots today, but that leaves more than a hundred and fifty thousand

can see just how clear it is on the coast not clear everywhere that area of low pressure bringing us some higher clouds which gave us the colorful sunset tonight. here's the deal now high pressure overhead the flow between the high and the low is coming out of the northeast that's offshore winds that wind. increase overnight and that will help to actually take our temperatures up not just in the morning but in the afternoon the next couple of days, so right now we do have the high clouds on live doppler 7 as we check out the 24 hour temperature change some areas are down. some areas are up but this afternoon the overall trend was down. here's a gorgeous post sunset view from our emeryville cameras. we look back towards the golden gate bridge. you could see a little bit of color there 57 in the city. it is 56 in oakland 58, san jose currently 53 santa clara and from our exploratorium camera, you can see some of those clouds in the financial district low to mid 50s from santa rosa to novato currently 56 degrees in concord and livermore. you're at 54 degrees dry in

walnut creek. we are not expecting any rain anytime soon breezy to gusty overnight strongest in the hills mainly clear and chili with areas of frost in the morning and we are looking at sunny and warmer the next two afternoons. so here we go with the hourly forecast with the winds tomorrow afternoon about 20 to 25 miles an hour out of the northeast. that is what's going to push those temperatures up so it's not going to be quite as cool as it has been as we head into tuesday evening. you can still see those down sloping winds going into wednesday morning a little breezy and then after that the wind direction will switch back to onshore so breezy in the hills tonight that may actually help to hold some of those temperatures up, but we're still expecting some areas of frost in the morning where it is chilly mid 30s for the coldest spots mid 40s right around cisco and oakland afternoon highs in the south bay 67 san jose 66 and gilroy so pretty mild day on the peninsula mid-60s from palo alto, san mateo 63 half moon bay downtown san francisco 64
