but thanks to recent rain, especially last week's storm, we do not have any fire concerns. here is a live look from our east bay hills camera. we have clear skies once again this morning, and we will have a lot of sunshine today. sunrise here at 6:50 this morning. we will go into the 50's by lunchtime. later this afternoon it is warmer today compared to yesterday. a lot of us going for the 60's away from the coast. kumasi: if you are flying out of sfo this morning you might notice a picket outside the airport. flight attendants with american airlines are holding informational tickets in nearly a dozen airports across the country. li na, it is not expected to impact any flights. reporter: that's right. american airlines says they are not anticipating the picketing happening this morning to impact

their operations whatsoever. the flight attendants that are expected to pick it today are working to secure a contract complete with a wage increase for the first time since 2019. they say american airlines management has continuously rejected contract oppose old that they believe will improve the airline's operational reliability and flight attendant work life. the union representing these workers says even though flight hours across the country have returned to pre-pandemic levels there are thousands fewer flight attendants, which makes it more challenging to recover from weather events. this means longer workdays, minimal rest, and more rescheduled operations, leading to exhaustion newly hired flight attendants are required to move into hub cities, with astronomical housing costs like boston and new york, leaving many struggling to afford the cost of living. american airlines it says today's picketing will have no

impact on their operation. they said americans' flight attendants are the best in the business, and like all our team members, deserve to paid well. we continue to meet regularly with the association of professional flight attendants to reach an agreement that benefits both our flight attendants and operation, and we respect the right of our flight attendants to participate in informational picketing and to send a bigger message these flight attendants are not just going to be picketing at sfo, but 11 different airports across the country there -- -- country. here at sfo the picketing is expected to continue until 1:00. kumasi: thank you. developing news this morning, a student accused of killing three student athletes at the university of virginia is in custody after a 13-hour manhunt. jobina, it looks like this person was already on the university's radar. jobina: yes, classes at the

university of virginia are canceled again today as the campus comes to grips with the loss of these three student athletes. authorities identified the victims as devin chandler, lavelle davis junior, and deshawn. . they were on a bus returning to campus when the suspect started shooting at the bus. the three players were killed. two others were injured. officials say jones was already on the university's radar in september. >> i don't know the facts and circumstances of that investigation. it was eventually closed due to witnesses that would not cooperate with the process. jobina: the police chief said that jones boasted about having a gun, but his motive is not clear. jones also faced a previous hazing investigation. jones faces three counts of second-degree murder and three counts of using a handgun in the commission of a felony. reggie: thank you.

a week after the midterm elections, and it looks like proposition m is going to pass. it would apply to property owners who have three or more units vacant for at least six months. they would be taxed between $2500 and $5,000 per unit. roughly 4000 units in the city will qualify for the vacancy tax. the tax penalty could increase over time to up to $20,000 per unit. kumasi: we are expecting another update today on oakland's mayoral race. it is narrowing. loren taylor has about 52% of the vote friday it was 53% for taylor and 47% for tao. the vast number of votes by mail ballots is slowing down the counting. reggie: we are expecting an update on the tight race for san jose mayor. matt may is increasing his lead over chavez.

there are less than 4000 votes between them and an estimated 79% of the ballots have been counted. we also received a statement from the postal service regarding the dozen or more santa clara county ballots found dumped in the santa cruz mountains over the weekend. the postal service says those were delivered to election officials yesterday. the county is determining whether they are going to be counted the investigation into how the ballots got there is ongoing. with many races outstanding you can always check the results as they come in. kumasi: lung cancer survival rates have increased in the u.s., according to a report to the american lung association. it found 25% of patients recovered in 2018, compared to 21% in 2014. the report also found disparities among race and region. experts say access to early screenings, died doses, and

treatment are key. reggie: another court has blocked president items of loan forgiveness plan. six states are suing. the ruling was not a decision on the legal merits, but rather focused on whether any of those states have standing to challenge the program. which is suspended, by the way, until this case gets ongoing. opponents arguing -- argue wiping away the debt was to be an act of congress. last week a judge in texas ruled the plan is unlawful. drew: here is the tower this morning, looking at the bright lights of san francisco. we are bouncing around a bit. breezy in our hills, but most of us not experiencing calm winds and other service. visibility showing you we have no issues with fog. it tends to change as you get posted to sunrise, but now everybody has a 10 on the board. temperature-wise we are finding numbers in the 40's in our warmest spots.

suffer when a facility is understaffed. during a visit to the federal collection institute in dublin. reggie: california has reported the first death of a child due to the flu and rsv. someone can be affected -- the infected with viruses at the same time. the department of medicine chair says we all have to be more careful about prevention, like handwashing. >> at least one case in a very big country, so it is not like i would stop having my kids go to daycare if i had infants, but it is something you have to be thoughtful about. if your kid develops an infection and starts getting short of breath they need to get medical attention quickly. reggie: young children are most vulnerable to severe complications from rsv and flu. especially if they have underlying quick -- underlying conditions or were born premature. pe occupancy remains at its highest level in two years.

kumasi: the stage is set for both -- for a vote on marriage equality. chuck schumer has laid the procedural groundwork for a vote today on debating the issue. the focus is on a field that would enshrine marriage economy -- enshrine marriage equality. since the supreme court overruled abortion, other rights could be at risk. schumer made a plea for the needed support from republican colleagues. >> i hope for the sake of tens of millions of americans that at least 10 republicans will vote with us to protect marriage equality. the rights and dignity of millions of americans depend on it. kumasi: the house passed the respect for marriage act in july, but the senate delayed its vote until after midterm elections. reggie: california's first partner tearfully testified that she was raped by harvey weinstein. she told a court she met weinstein, and a movie

executive, in 2005, and he offered to help with her career. she began to cry in the stand, saying he invited her to what was supposed to be a business meeting, but that he raped her in a hotel room. weinstein has pleaded not guilty to multiple charges. he was found lt in 2020 on rape charges and sentenced to 23 years in prison. weinstein is appealing. kumasi: classes are taking place at uc campuses, despite what is being called the largest higher education strike in u.s. history. nearly 50,000 graduate student researchers, teaching assistants, and student employees walked out yesterday. that included more than 9000 alone at uc berkeley. these employees are demanding more benefits and higher pay. some make about $17 an hour, and they say that is not enough to live in the bay area. >> i'm not ashamed, because i need these resources, but it is shameful that an institution that is respected worldwide is

making us live in these conditions. kumasi: uc system is offering workers a 7% increase, the first year, and a 3% increase in pay after that. reggie: your workers union has rejected a proposed contract, pushing the country closer to a strike that could cripple the economy. the national brotherhood of oil makers voted against an agreement reached in september. two other unions are set to strike starting december 4 if no agreement is reached. about 30% of u.s. freight is moved by rail. a strike could send prices of gas and food soaring. kumasi: a major milestone is for dicta today when it comes to the number of people on our planet. the human expects the 8 billionth baby to be born. the you in notes that the population growth is slowing. it took 12 years to go from 7 billion to 8 billion people. now it is expected to take 15

here is our oakland airport camera. here is how the forecast is shipping out for the next couple of days. it is clear. we are just a few degrees warmer this morning then we were yesterday. we will find a breezy to gusty winds later today. then it is sunny and warm the next two afternoons. with those clear skies, lived up to seven showing you a quiet scan. we think we will stay that way for the next seven days. we have high pressure basically on the border of california and nevada this morning. it is supplying us with clear skies. that clockwise rotation around that high is sending us an offshore wind that will strike across southern california later today. for us it will be breezy, but thankfully for those recent rains it has mitigated any fire concerns we have with this offshore wind. 2:00 p.m., it is strongest in the north bay. it will calm down a bit as we had toward tomorrow afternoon.

francisco international today, american airlines flight attendants will be picketing at sfo and airports across the country. it is a call to ongoing contract negotiations, saying these flight attendants are exhausted. reggie: frontier and five other airlines will pay more than $7 million in fines for delaying refunds for canceled or delayed flights. the airlines have been ordered to refund the travelers more than $600 million. drew: expect to sunny skies and a mild afternoon today. it is clear and cool right now. we will warm into the 50's by lunchtime, then later this afternoon we will go into the 60's. kumasi: we have a clear commute for you this morning as we bring you this live picture from the san rafael bridge. no advisories to report. >> number seven. today is america recycles day. we are all encouraged to refresh our knowledge of recycling and check with local recycling

which, for kevin mccarthy, can be a big issue. kumasi: across the state nearly 4 million ballots still need to be counted. if republicans do take control of the house bakersfield congressman kevin mccarthy is expected to become house speaker. lgbtq activist and housing rights advocate honey mahogany has conceded to matt dorsey in san francisco's district six race. mayor london breed exceeded dorsey in may. mahogany set on twitter she is still in public, intending to work with supervisor dorsey on common goals. and she thanks everyone with the hopes she has brought instant ration -- not inspiration. reggie: the man accused of attacking house speaker nancy pelosi's husband is set to appear in federal court. david depape is facing federal charges.

these are separate from the state charges he is also facing. depape could face 50 years in prison for the federal charges. kumasi: also today, the only surviving suspect in the murder of an oakland dentist is set to appear in court. the 33-year-old is accused of killing the doctor in a muer pt. his boyfriend was also arrested, but died by suicide in jail. documents show prior to his death she changed her accounts in a state. reggie: thousands more tech workers are expected to lose their jobs as soon as this week. the new york times reports amazon will lay off 10,000 employees. the cats will be the largest in the company's history, impacting 3% of employees. this follows layoffs by twitter and metta. when expert says these companies could be watching with the others are doing and following the trend. >> some of these phones are

manufacturers to install tracking devices inside gear. kumasi: today is america recycles day, to raise awareness of recycling. i'm cities are organizing recycling events. gloria rodriguez is joining us with how you can participate. gloria: more than 2000 events are held around the country, with more than 2 million people participating. san leandro is allowing residents to properly dispose of items such as pharmaceuticals, household batteries, and dvds at the marina community center between 9:00 this morning and 1:00 p.m. you did have to register ahead of time, but even if you are not able to participate america recycles day is a good reminder to recycle, and make sure you do it right. when recycling plastic food containers tonya richardson, the solid waste and recycling specialist with san leandro, said they asked residents to make sure the containers are clean and dry.

>> there is the tension between, we live in the bay area, we have a drought. how much cleaning are we going to do of our containers? we try to send the messages, you know, a quick rinse of hr or other kind of container you are going to put in your recycling, it is important it is dry so it does not contaminate the other materials in the recycling bin. gloria: california has measures in place to boost recycling. cal recycle says new legislation will require all packaging be psycho bull or compostable by 2032. we have a few recycling tips from the epa. make sure you flatten those boxes before you put them in the bin. you can recycle mail, even those envelopes with plastic windows. and broken glass should not go into the recycling bin. last one, aluminum cans should not be crushed before they are recycle.
