informational pickets at nearly one dozen airports across the country. lena howland is live with the details and it is not expected to impact any flights. lena: that is right. american airlines says that the picketing will have no impact on their operations. the flight attendants are working to secure a contract complete with a wage increase for the first time since 2018. the union called the association of professional flight attendants says that even flight hours across the country have returned to pre-pandemic levels there are thousands fewer flight attendants which makes it even more challenging to recover from weather events meaning longer workdays, minimal rest which leads to exhaustion and crews timing out. new hire flight attendants are required to move into hub cities with astronomical costs leaving

many to struggle to afford housing and the cost of living. american airlines said that the flight attendants are the best in the blizzard -- in the business and every team member deserves to pay well and we meet regularly with the association of professional flight attendants to meet you in agreement -- to reach an agreement and we respect the right of our flight attendants to participation -- to participate in informational picketing. they will be picketing outside of 11 different airports from coast-to-coast across the country. at sfo that will start around 11:00 and continue until 1:00 this afternoon. reggie: a week after the midterm elections and it looks like san francisco's proposition m will pass. it would apply to property owners that have three or more units vacant for six months. they will be taxed between 2500 and $5,000 per unit.

roughly 4000 units in the city would qualify for this tax. the tax penalty could increase over time up to $20,000 per unit. kumasi: we are expecting another update on the mayoral race. it is narrowing. loren taylor has 52% of the vote. shane has 52 -- has 58%. on friday, she had 58%. if the vast number of vote by mail ballots -- it is a vast number of vote by mail ballots that reggie: -- we are expecting a tight race in san francisco county. chavez has 49% of the vote but only has 4000 votes between her and her opponent. 79% of ballots have been counted. we received a statement about a dozen or more santa clara ballots dumped in the santa mountain -- santa cruz

mountains. they said the ballots have been delivered back to election officials and the county is determining if they are allowed to be counted. the investigation to how they got there is ongoing. with many races outstanding you can check with us to see as the results come in at abc7news.com /election. kumasi: a student accused of killing three student athletes at the university of virginia is in custody after a 13 hour manhunt. it looks like this person was already on the radar before the shooting. jobina: classes at the university of virginia are canceled as the campus comes to grips with the loss of three student athletes. they have identified the victims. they were on a bus returning to campus when the suspect, christopher darnell jones jr. started shooting at the bus. the three were killed and two were injured.

jones was already on the radar back in september. >> i do not know the circumstance of that investigation. i know that it was closed due to witnesses that would not cooperate with the process. jobina: the police chief said that he had boasted about having a gun but his motive is not clear. he also faced a previous hazing investigation. he faces three counts of second-degree murder and three counts of using a handgun in the commission of a felony. reggie: in idaho police are investigating the death of four college students as a crime of passion. they were found dead near the university of idaho's campus. details are limited but there is no ongoing threat although there is nobody in custody. they say a murderer-suicide is not likely. classes were canceled yesterday and are expected to resume today. kumasi: california reported the

first death of a child due to the flu and rsv. the state did not elaborate, but someone can be infected with both at the same time. ucsf head of department chair says that we need to be more careful about prevention. >> this is one case in a big country so it is not like i would stop having my kids go to daycare if i had infants, but it is something to be thoughtful about but if your kid develops an upper respiratory infection and starts getting shorter breath they need to get medical attention quickly. reggie: young children -- kumasi: young children are mown -- are more vulnerable because if they have underlying conditions or were born premature, pediatric bed occupancy remains at its highest level in two years. reggie: another court blocked president biden's student loan forgiveness plan and six states

reggie: a setback in the fight against alzheimer's. a new drug has not been able to slow down the disease. researchers say a two year trial of 1000 volunteers found no benefit to memory or cognitive tests and people with early-stage alzheimer's. the company plans to release more details about the study. this setback leaves two other drug companies opening to launch a successful treatment. drew: we are looking at this camera this morning. mainly clear skies and it is cool, not as cold as yesterday morning. we warm a bit faster compared to yesterday. well into the 50's by the afternoon and into the 60's across the board. six d4 with bright sunshine. 64, san mateo. 70, santa rosa. the three day forecast shows that we will likely hit 70

shameful that an institution that is respected worldwide is making us live in these conditions. reggie: the system is offering workers a 7% increase the first year and 3% after that. a major milestone has come to the mild stuff to the number of people and our planet. the u.n. expects the 8 billionth baby to be born. the u.n. notes that population growth is slowing. it took 12 years to go from seven to 8 billion people. now it is expected to take 15 million years -- 15 years to get to 9 billion. kumasi: jay leno is in a southern california hospital recovering from serious burns he suffered in a gasoline fire. he was working on a vehicle when it caught fire inside the garage where he stores some of his cars. the 72-year-old told "variety"

that he is ok and will need a week or two to get back on his feet. he suffered burns to the left side of his face at the flames did not harm his eyes or ears. reggie: sad news about roberta flack, she has als. it is making her hard for her to talk and impossible for her to sing. the 85-year-old won four grammys and has been nominated 14 times. a documentary about her life is premiering in new york last week. she previously suffered a stroke in 2016. kumasi: trevor noah is returning to san francisco. it will be a part of his national 40 day tour called off of the record. he is not going to be in the bay area until november 2023. tickets go on sale this friday and the tour comes after he announced that he will be leaving his comedy central show. reggie: i have not seen him in

kumasi: 6:23. developing news where the stage is set for a vote on marriage equality. chuck schumer laid the procedural groundwork work on debating the issue. the focus was on a bill that would enshrined marriage equality into federal law. since the supreme court overturned roe v. wade democrats warned that other rights could be at risk. schumer made a plea for the needed support from his republican colleagues. >> i hope for the sake of tens

of millions of americans that at least 10 republicans will vote to protect marriage equality into law. the rights and dignity of millions in america -- millions of americans depend on it. kumasi: the house passed the respect for marriage act in july but the senate delayed its vote. california's first partner and filmmaker tearfully testified that she was raped by harvey weinstein and she told a court that she met him and then a movie executive in 2005 and he offered to help with her career. she began to cry saying that later this year -- later that year he invited her to a business meeting but says that he raped her in a hotel room. weinstein pled not guilty to multiple sexual assault charges and was found guilty in 2020 on rape charges and sentenced to 23 years in prison and he is appealing. working out in the morning means

and this is part of a nationwide action. lena: that is right. american airlines says that the picket lines will have no impact on their operations. the flight attendants are working to secure a contract complete with a wage increase for the first time since 2019. the union representing the workers called the association a professional flight attendants said that even though flight hours have returned to pre-pandemic levels there are thousands fewer flight attendants which makes it more challenging to recover from weather events meaning longer workdays and more rescheduled operations leading to exhaustion and crews timing out. american airlines said "we continue to meet regularly with the association of professional flight attendants to reach an agreement that benefits flight attendants and operation and we expect the right of our flight attendants to participate in informational picketing.

between them having a three seat majority or four seat majority which, for kevin mccarthy could be a big issue. reggie: nearly 4 million ballots still need to be counted. if republicans take control of the house, kevin mccarthy is expected to become house speaker. kumasi: lgbtq activists and housing advocate has conceded to matt dorsey in san francisco's district sixth race. dorsey was appointed in may and he wins a four year term representing soma, mission bay, and treasure island. she says she is still in public service intending to work with supervisor dorsey. she thanks everyone with hopes that she brought inspiration to get involved in politics. reggie: a man accused of attacking nancy pelosi's husband is set to appear in federal court. he is facing federal charges for

the attack. these are separate from the state charges that have already been filed. he could face 50 years in prison for federal charges. kumasi: the only surviving suspect in the murder of an oakland dentist is set to appear in alameda county court. he is accused of killing the dentist in a murder for hire plot. her boyfriend was also arrested but died by suicide in jail. documents show that prior, she changed her accounts and her estate worth up to $14 million into his name. reggie: recent attacks on photographers have professionals saying they will not return to the city. last week armed thieves targeted at least two photographers at the palace of fine arts. this video shows what happened in one of the cases. one of the victims was with the bride and groom when he had to fight off this attempted robbery. another photographer's equipment

was stolen at gunpoint at the same spot that day. >> the bride was crying all the time. reggie: this case highlights the dangers for professional photographers shooting at popular tourist destinations. this video used in a police investigation shows a canadian crew robbed of $35,000 of equipment near twin peaks. we spoke with a part dressed with a photographer who changed his habits while working in the city. >> iran all over san francisco taking pictures on a smartphone in the video is comparable to what i am getting on my photography equipment. we never go on affectional shoots without a guard. reggie: they have signed a petition asking camera manufacturers to install tracking devices inside the gear. kumasi: investigators are blaming smoking materials for a fast-moving fire that killed another woman and her adult son

in walnut creek. it started inside a ground-floor unit. it started around 6:30 yesterday morning. the fire spread quickly due in part to an oxygen canister that exploded and that made it impossible to reach the two victims. firefighters say that this fire can serve as a reminder for everyone. >> use your smoke detectors, and keep that room doors closed when you sleep. it can limit the spread so if it spreads from room to room if the doors are closed it will buy you time for us to get here and get you out. >> a small dog also died in the fire. three units were damaged. reggie: the white house as it has pushed out $185 billion in funding under the partisan infrastructure law passed last month. that much or more is expected in 2023. he spoke about the funding during the g summit and is died

awareness about recycling. it turns out that maybe we are not doing it as well as we should be. gloria rodriguez has the new data released in the past hour. gloria: good morning, cal recycle estimating that the rate was 40% last year, lower than the rate in 2020 which was 42%. on this america recycles day more than 2000 recycling events are held around the country with 2 million people participating. the city of san leandro is allowing residents to dispose of things like pharmaceuticals, household batteries and dvds at the marina community center between 9:00 in the morning and 1:00 in the afternoon. you had to register ahead of time even if you are not able to participate. america recycles day is a good reminder to recycle and make sure you are doing it right. when recycling plastic food
