>> breaking out of redwoods they were police activity has shut down the intersection of lvl and lincoln avenue. officers were called for reports of a shooting. investigators from three agencies are on the scene including redwood city police and the san mateo county sheriff's office and district attorney's office. they got video of a sheriffs's office vehicle with a broken window. it is unclear how that happened. el camino is closed. i am ama daetz. >> we will stay on top of that. the other top story we are following is the growing concern of early winter virus season. " this was a big increase in influenza and rsv.

>> with multiple respiratory illnesses sending children to emergency rooms, how do you know which virus your child has? luz pena talked to several pediatricians. >> they are impacting children across the country. covid, rsv and the flu all at once. chris pediatricians say it is unusual to see hospitalizations with rsv and multiple respiratory diseases this early in the season. children being back at school could be a factor. >> i am not sure why it is so much worse so much earlier. >> according to both doctors, getting tested is the only way to know for sure. here is a few insights. let's start with influenza. the symptoms could include stomach pain along with a runny nose, cough, sometimes it will look just like a regular cold.

>> covid symptoms are very similar to the flu. kueng's runny nose, fever, body aches which you can also get with influenza. >> what makes it different is how it impacts the lungs. click the little kids have such little bronchioles that even a little bit of mucus and swelling can make them sick. that is actually where rsv causes problems. it is influenza, when you get really sick of influenza, it is because pneumonia happens and the entire tissue of the lung. >> most patients with rsv recovered within a week or two. so when should you be concerned? >> when they are working hard to breathe, when they are having respiratory distress, when a fever is not responding, when there otherwise i have, busy, chatty child, they lose that spark. quest pediatricians recommend to get your children vaccinated with covid and flu shots but there is not an rsv vaccine

available yet. >> sonoma county says it is seeing an uptick in flu and rsv cases. health officials expressed concern they could also see an increase in covid cases. for now, the focus is on the flu and rsv. >> you can see a similar trend with rsv in terms of higher and earlier levels of rsv detected than prior years. >> the county health ups are advised people to take the same approach to rsv and the flu as they would with covid. mask up, wash hands as often as possible. grace in the east bay, the only surviving suspect in the murder of an open dentist was in alameda county court today. this 33-year-old is accused of killing dr. lillie hsu in a murder for hire plot.

her boyfriend was also arrested but died by suicide in jail. documents show that prior to their death, they changed their accounts, during today's hearing, they pled not guilty. his next hearing was scheduled for december 13. in east oakland, police were investigating a shooting that happened just before noon on international boulevard near 30th ave where officers arrived, they found one victim. that person was taken to the hospital and is listed in stable condition. officers could be seen walking around this food truck. delivered another suspect was shot but fled the scene before they got there. >> in san francisco, it was almost one year ago when the city suffered one of its most embarrassing and disgusting moments. that is where union square

officers were here. leah melendez explains why it may be the safest place in the city. >> sure, union square has picturesque views and the number of attractions worthy of visiting but convincing people that it is safe has been a challenging task for the city. >> i know that oftentimes there are a number of videos that continue to go viral that try to paint overly harsh picture of our beautiful city. i am here to tell you that things have changed. >> a year ago, the nation witnessed a city in chaos as leaders were caught on camera stealing and vandalizing high-end retail stores. it quickly force the city to focus on security and the city's tarnished image. >> during the holiday season, you could not come to this area without bumping into a police officer. that is what will happen this year.

hammer has pled not guilty in the case. he entered the plea to federal charges this morning. investigators say that he broke into the pelosi home, intending to attack the house speaker but she was not home. her husband was. he suffered a skull fracture and other injuries. he is facing state charges, being prosecuted by the san francisco district attorney's office. >> donald trump is expected to announce tonight that he is running for president in 2024. that announcement expected in about one hour. it would be his third bid for the white house. trump has been hinting at another run for months. the expected announcement comes on the heels of a disappointing showing by republicans in the midterm elections which many are blaming on the former president. trump is scheduled to speak at mar-a-lago, florida in just about one hour at 6:00 p.m. our time. >> with midterm elections behind us, there is plenty of political maneuvering happening on capitol hill.

today, has republicans nominated kevin mccarthy to be the next speaker of the house, meanwhile, rick scott plans to challenge mitch mcconnell for his powerful post after republicans failed to win back the majority. it is the first opposition mcconnell has faced in 15 years. collect despite being one week removed from the midterm election, there are still several races locally and statewide that are too close to call. liz is in the newsroom with a look at voter turnout and why it takes so long to count all these ballots. >> in california, counties have a full 30 days to count all of their ballots to the state. it is not unusual for it to cap the millions of ballots received. seven days after the midterm election and there are still millions of ballots left to be counted. the reason is due to a combination of factors.

>> generally, it is something that does not become headline news that is taking a long time to count ballots. >> there are several tight races that people are watching closely and are still too close to call. >> that long tail the voting process is more visible when it is impacting bigger races. >> for time is as big and small, this is nothing new. it once took a full 30 days to get a winner in a primary race for controller. a factor that is newer is vote by mail. >> a much larger share of the ballots are coming in as postmarked by election day but being tabulated after election day. >> his office received as many vote by mail ballots on election day as they did leading up to it. he says each one takes time to process. >> we have to go through a signature checking process, we have to sort them into precinct

order. taking 200,000 ballots and trying to get them sorted into a particular order, they are all just randomly mixed together. >> they are still getting ballots that were mailed out on election day. today is the deadline to receive them. >> we are still processing those ballots coming in. >> mitchell project final turnout will be around 50%, a number pretty typical for a gubernatorial election. he says that will likely equate to roughly 11 million voters. >> looking historically, that is a pretty large number. 50% may not sound like it is a lot but we have 2 million more actual voters registered than we did in 2018. we have around 5 million more registered voters that we did in 2014. place in terms of raw votes, 11 million voters is quiet a lot. that is because of the increase in voter registration. this year's turnout is nowhere near the 2018 midterms when it was over 60% turnout, a state

hold off on naming jennifer lewis to the post permanently. she was scheduled to be appointed tonight. a former berkeley police officer alleges lewis failed to take action when she learned about text messages between officers with racist and anti-home -- and statements. the messages also discussed patterns of unlawful police practices. lewis issued a statement saying the incident did not occur under her supervision. the police accountability board also voted to launch an investigation into the allegations of police misconduct. >> academic workers are in day two of the state why workers strike. nearly 50,000 workers are demanding higher wages and better working conditions. abc 7 was at uc berkeley were 9000 graduates walked off the job monday, some say they are making less than $20 an hour, making it difficult to live in the bay area and do their job. academic workers say contracts have been in negotiations for a year. within that time, bargaining

person per day. this data averages almost 7 pounds per person per day. >> on the state level, there is room for improvement. statewide recycling dropped from 2020 when it was 42%. last year, 40%. what can and can't be recycled in large part depends on what city you live in but some methods are universal by cleaning out food containers. >> and scraped them out so there is not a lot of food in your recyclables and that will help keep your paper and cardboard clean and dry. >> that is especially crucial because many of the recyclables from california and are being sent to international markets. those markets have become more strict in what they will accept. this has led to more interest in developing more local recycling plant in california and across the country. >> we have been relying on overseas industries. like so many things, we need to look within the u.s. and say how can we expand those markets?
