chief washington correspondent, who is there in mar-a-lago. what was it like in the room? >> this was a rather disciplined speech by donald trump standards. he didn't go on and on about the 2020 campaign, he didn't attack his republican rivals. he kept the focus on joe biden and how in his view america was winning when he was president, and america is losing now. >> jon, to that point, in many ways the midterm elections were seen as a referendum on former president trump. several of the candidates he backed, as you know, his most fervent supporters, lost. what does it say about the republican party and the former president's grip on the party? >> there are clear signs he is losing that grip. he still has it. he's still by far the most dominant figure in the republican party. but you are seeing prominent republicans come out and say that the party needs to look beyond donald trump and blaming him for the losses in the midterms. but make no mistake, he is still formidable in a battle for the republican presidential nomination.

certainly the leading candidate. right now the only candidate, but regardless of who gets in, he will be the person to beat. >> now that he's thrown his name in, who are the likely top contenders who will challenge him at some point? >> the most obvious one is ron desantis, although ron desantis has just gotten re-elected as governor. he's not said he is going to run. he hasn't ruled out running against donald trump. some of his supporters the other day were circulating private polls that suggested desantis could beat donald trump in the early primaries. so desantis the most likely formidable candidate to come in. mike pence has made it clear he's likely to run. you'll see many potential anti-trump candidates. liz cheney has talked about running. larry hogan of maryland. so i think you could potentially have a crowded field. of course, the more crowded the

field, the better that is, actually, for trump. >> you know this president as well as any journalist in our country. did anything seem different about tonight? or was this the donald trump we've come to know? >> i will say, to borrow a phrase he has used to talk about others, it did seem a little low energy. i mean, they're playing loud music right now, but this did seem to be considerable more low energy than the donald trump i saw in 2016 and 2020. in fact, byron, people started to leave early. there are some people in the back started to leave early. then they closed the doors off because i don't think they wanted people to leave. it did seem like it doesn't quite have the energy that donald trump had in his last two campaigns, at least not here on day one. >> it will be a busy two years to come. jon karl, thank you so much. >> thank you, byron. we turn now to a controversy brewing in the world of hip-hop. echoing the far too common experience of black women and

girls in this country. grammy winner megan thee stallion has grabbed the world's attention with her music, but also sparked a conversation about what it means to protect black women and girls. she's faced scrutiny and even mockery about the shooting she survived. activists coming to her defense in the last few days. here's abc's ashan singh. ♪ >> reporter: megan thee stallion is a powerhouse in the music world with hits like "body" and "her." ♪ her her her her her ♪ >> megan thee stallion to me is a phenomenal woman. but megan has also been through ups and downs. she has been the trending topic in hip-hop and in pop culture for a minute now, and not always in a positive light. >> reporter: stallion, real name megan pete, has faced vicious attacks for the last two years after allegedly being shot by a male rapper in 2020.

the controversy reignited this month when drake released a new song seeming to mock the shooting the grammy winner survived. women activists and leaders coming to her defense over the last few days. >> black women live at this intersection between sexism and racism. and we've had for generations. >> there is the silence that still surrounds gender and sexual violence, particularly against marginalized women like meg. we don't talk enough about the ways that misogyny plays out in realtime. >> reporter: megan's experience pushing her to speak out. performances like this one on "saturday night live" demanding that the country protect black women. >> we need to protect our black women and love our black women. because at the end of the day, we need our black women. >> reporter: activists say of the disproportionate violence black women and girls face daily in america. four black women were killed every day in 2020. black women are three times as likely to be killed by a man than white women.

>> meg thee stallion unfortunately is aligned with a longer history and contemporary reality of pervasive violence against black women and girls. >> reporter: it was july of 2020 when megan thee stallion was allegedly shot by rapper tory lanez in los angeles. this tmz video shows the aftermath of the alleged shooting. megan seen struggling to walk, leaving bloody footprints. laura stiles is cohost at hot 97, new york city's flagship hip-hop radio station. take me back to two years ago when meg thee stallion was shot. >> i remember when the headlines were all coming out, it was a shocker to all of us. when any of our favorite artists are hurt are in the news for something sad or tragic or scary. >> reporter: tory lanez was charged with felony assault and pleaded not guilty. his trial begins at the end of this month. his attorneys did not respond to requests for comment. >> he's denied it. he claims he's innocent.

he claims the truth will come out when the case is open to the public. >> reporter: it took over a month for megan to say publicly who she claimed shot her. >> so often in instances of interpersonal and intimate violence, people often remain silent. in the case of black women in particular, you don't feel that you'll be believed if you come forward. especially if it's someone who other people know as well and are rooting for. >> reporter: rumors that megan was making up the story swirled online and in the hip-hop world. leading the rapper to fire back with this tweet. it might be funny to y'all on the internet and just another messy topic for you to talk about, but this is my real life and i'm real life hurt and traumatized. >> there's the fans who completely feel it was fabricated. they don't care about any of the facts. they call her a liar. then there's people who are standing behind this, you know, this woman who has been bullied and are completely standing by her. >> reporter: megan opening up about the shooting in an interview with cbs' gayle king

for clout. adding, since when is it cool to joke about women getting shot? drake has not responded publicly or to abc news' request for comment. >> she is not clickbait, she's not a headline, she's not merely her persona on records and concerts and albums. she is a woman whose feelings get hurt, who deserves to be protected, no matter how big her career is. >> reporter: the drake song sparking some prominent thought leaders and lawmakers to show support for megan saying, we are committed to making this world safer for you and all women. >> we are consistently having this conversation. reiterating for the world and for ourselves that black women and girls deserve to be protected. there is something that is lingering in our culture, that it is okay to objectify, to create places that are not safe for black girls and women, and we are here to stand and say, absolutely not.
