police are trying to determine the cause of a crash that injured three people in the parking lot of a target store. it happened in san mateo. three cars were involved. all three victims had to be taken to the hospital. in san francisco, one mooney light rail train struck another. five people were taken to the hospital. the injuries were minor. two other people were hurt. over scarce scenario for firefighters in concorde. a punctured gas main led to this fire right near a major hospital. a construction crew hit a gas line this morning on great street. the outpatient urgent care facility had to use generators for hours boom -- hours.

they were able to put out the flame shortly afternoon. no injuries were reported. dan: 25 recruits with the los angeles sheriff's department were hit in a car crash. reporter: chaos and. dozens and recruits from the l.a. county sheriffs training academy stands stunned. emergency workers scrambling to save other recruits struck biden out of control suv. the dispatch calls capturing the panic at the scene. >> how many are injured? >> it looked like an airplane wreck or there were so many bodies scattered. it was pretty traumatic. reporter: the shareholding the news conference after the wreck,

laying out what happened. 75 recruits were jogging on mills avenue when this hyundai suv veered into the wrong lane and slammed headfirst into them. >> the deputies could see the vehicle coming and they were able to get out of the way, but the people behind could not see and those are the ones who were not able to get out of the way. reporter: the collision happened yards away from a fire station so first responders were quick to the scene. witnesses jumping in to help. >> everybody was in a panic. there were cables on fire and the car was smoking. it was a graphic scene. >> there were so many people running around. reporter: the cause is still under investigation. the driver described as a 22-year-old man seen here going through a field sobriety check. the sheriff saying there was no

sign of alcohol. ama: for her therapist ceo elizabeth holmes is going to be sentenced at the end of the week. the question now is how much time could she serve in prison? reporter: for those of us who have been following this trial, friday will mark the end of what has been a years long drama. she faces up to 20 years in prison but she is asking for leniency. she argues she has already paid a price for her crimes. nearly one year after a jury found her guilty on four counts of fraud, elizabeth holmes will officially get her sentencing on friday. federal prosecutors asked the judge to sentence hurt to 15 years in prison. they argue she deserves the

sentence for dubin investors out of hundreds of millions of dollars. she is asking the judge for leniency. she is requesting 18 months or less in prison or house arrest. >> at think this judge has to giver some period of concussed duration. i think the court be looking at somewhere on the low end of two or three years. on the high-end, somewhere between seven or eight years. i had of the sentencing, her lawyers gave the judge 130 letters, including one from senator booker in support of her. another letter from a friend confirmed she is pregnant again. given the public interest in the

case, her attorneys are arguing she has already paid a price for her crimes. >> if the court views that as punishment enough, then we are in turn the world of real privilege that if you are a public person, you can say i do not need to go to prison because i have been publicly humiliated. i do not think the court can afford to do that. reporter: the government also submitted victim impact statements against her. that includes one from her own aunt, who says she invested and does believe her niece should serve time. ama: she is pregnant now.

how important is this to the judge? >> her relationship with the former coo of theranos could have an impact. she had alleged there was some emotional abuse that influenced her actions at the time. dan: elon musk has given twitter employees until tomorrow afternoon to decide if they want to stay with the company. he sent out an email saying workers will need to be extremely hard court otherwise they can leave and will receive three months severance. this comes as musk revealed that he is planning on finding a new ceo for twitter. he was sued by a tesla shareholder overcompensation package. our sister station reports musk

standing up for the right thing and suffering consequences. she lost her right eye. ama: our reporter has the story. reporter: this is 19-year-old bianca. after emergency surgery to try to save her eye. this video shows are being attacked last weekend where she works in any act. she is the assistant manager and noticed a man holding the special needs teenager. she says her manager told him to tell him to leave. >> it is not right what you are doing. reporter: she says the man came after her. the second punch he threw hit her in the eye.

>> they kept asking if he was wearing any rings. reporter: that emergency surgery was unsuccessful in saving her right eye. >> it would be best to get a prosthetic eye. reporter: when my sister made the call and told me she is going to lose her eye, and she is going into surgery, that scared me. but the family is staying strong and hopes the police will catch the person. bianca says she was standing up for a friend. >> things may happen. at least i feel good that he was not harmed. i think it would have been a lot harder on him. reporter: there is also surveillance video showing the man entering and leaving the

isolated and targeted attack. university officials say a vigil will be held after the thanksgiving break. dan: are you v.a. student accused of killing students appeared in court today. christopher will down and out joni ernst did not enter a plea. he will remain in jail without bail. classes resumed today at uva. it happened on the bus. many students were returning from a class field trip. the uva football coach spoke publicly about the shooting for the first time today. >> three beautiful young human beings who had a great future ahead of them. dan: a motive for the shooting has not been released, but they say she targeted specific victims. ama: scams are on the rise.

a monterey viewer realized the p&g bill collector was really a scammer. dan: she decided she was going to catch a crook. michael finney explains what happened. reporter: it was a desperate attempt to stop a scammer. she ran into the bank. bakers heard the scam as it was happening, but was that enough for him to be caught? no. kim was excited and determined to catch a crook. >> i know i was going to get my money back. reporter: it began when she was driving home. her cell phone rang. a man said her bill was passed to and her electricity was about to be shut off.

he said are you familiar with cell quick pay? the man persuaded her to pay her bill on her phone. >> as soon site pressed send, i knew exactly what happened. reporter: she suddenly realized it was a dollar amount. and she had just sent to $1000 to a scammer. >> i stalled him and i was trying to think really fast. reporter: she drove to bank of america and put him on speakerphone. >> i said scam. reporter: the banker listened as the scammer tried to get more

money. >> one of the assistance grabbed the phone. reporter: the bank managers called the fraud department. she says we will help you. but even the bank managers were put on hold for two hours. >> the lady helping me try to talk to her coworkers. reporter: they never got through. her money was gone. she filed a claim, confident she had proven her case. but she did not. bank of america denied her claim, saying she had authorized a transfer even if she did try to stop it. >> the lady said i gave them the money. reporter: bank of america tells us it is unfortunate when people fall for scams. there is no guarantee we will get the money back since the

customer has authorized the payment. the bank did not say why its own managers could not reach their own fraud department. kim says they tracked her money to an online account that was shut down right after the scam. the branch manager tells us she gets scam reports every day. she would not comment on how kim tried to catch the crook that day. most banks say if you approve the money going out, they are not going to give you your money back. there is a move in congress to try to end this. ama: making a movie in oakland is making some problems for the neighborhood.
