somebody ♪ i mean, you can't talk over lizzo. good morning, america. come on. where are our manners? >> so polite of you, robin. also ahead this morning, ginger is tracking the latest on the deep freeze and the major snow storm. it's already coming down in upstate new york. first, the midterms. republicans have taken control of the house of representatives bringing divided government back to washington by a slim majority. congressional correspondent rachel scott starts us off. good morning, rachel. >> reporter: george, good morning. this is far from the red wave republicans were hoping for, but they have officially clinched a narrow majority in the house. votes are still being counted across the country. here is where things stand as of this morning. democrats were able to hang on to majority in the senate. republicans won a key california house race overnight giving them the 218 seats they needed for the majority. this will be a challenge for both parties. president biden congratulating republicans on that victory but

he is now entering a new and more challenging phase of his presidency. a divided government. republicans have made it clear they want to investigate everything from his administration to even his family. for republicans, this is one of the slimmest majorities in decades. that will be a challenge for any republican leader. kevin mccarthy has taken the first step to become the next speaker of the house, but he will need the support from almost every single republican, and, george, that's something he just does not have quite yet. >> no, he does not, rachel. meantime we'll learn more about house speaker nancy pelosi's future today. >> reporter: so sources tell me that house speaker nancy pelosi will announce a decision about her political future to her colleagues at some point today. she has been leading house democrats for 15 years. she told you she wanted to wait until after the election to announce this decision. but she has said that brutal attack on her husband, paul, will have a big impact on what she decides. george? >> rachel scott, thank you. michael? now to the latest on the major snowstorm.

at least seven states from new york to wisconsin under snow alerts. buffalo could get as much as four feet of snow that could paralyze the city. matt rivers is there for us this morning. good morning, matt. >> reporter: good morning, michael. plows already starting up here in the city of buffalo. we have other heavy equipment on this side and this big salt pile here going to get a lot smaller over the next couple of days as we're looking at snowfall rates that could reach three inches per hour through sunday. overnight, a winter blast of lake-effect snow taking aim at western new york. cars navigating the elements, some drivers needing an assist from tow trucks. >> travel will be nearly impossible during the height of the storm. >> reporter: plows already dispatched trying to keep up with the conditions as snow has been hammering the area. drone video capturing numerous tractor-trailers that pulled off interstate i-90 to wait out the conditions and crammed into this rest area parking lot.

now buffalo bracing for an historic storm. oficials calling it a crippling life threatening system that will impact the region for days. the worst is yet to come. forecasts calling for potential inches but in feet. >> these are the type of storms that really put people's lives at risk. >> reporter: new york's governor declaring a state of emergency. closing part of interstate highway 90 to commercial traffic starting later today. hundreds of thousands lie right in the storm's path. it comes almost exactly eight years after an epic lake effect event dumped more than five feet of snow in the region, killing 13 people. meanwhile, the buffalo bills set to play a home game in the city on sunday. unclear if that game is going to happen. robin, if we know two things about buffalo, one, they k two, they love their bills. if they're talking about cancelling a football game because of snow, you know this is a big storm. >> yes, you do.

good point there, matt. appreciate it. we're going to turn to ginger with more on the snow as well as the deep freeze. good morning, ginger. >> good morning, robin. i grew up in it west michigan. driving in the lake-effect snow bands is something i've got a lot of experience with. i can tell you as you see them coming across the lakes, you'll have clear skies and then suddenly zero visibility. when you have three inch per hour snowfall rates, incredible amounts of snow and you cannot see. so that is why we're really concerned about the warnings you saw from west michigan and wisconsin over into western new york. look at some of the areas. 80 -- i'm sorry -- 81 both we're looking for the possibility of shutdowns. you can see up to four feet of snow when this all comes to an end by late sunday. why is this happening? it's not just happening for the northern great lakes. we are seeing this deep, deep freeze as far south as texas. look at new orleans with the wind chill tomorrow at 37. montana, 25 below possible. >> okay. winter is upon us. ginger, thank you. we're going to turn to the latest on the war in ukraine and the urgent investigation into the missile explosion that

killed two people in poland. our foreign correspondent james longman is in ukraine for us. and james, there was just a new barrage of russian missiles overnight? >> reporter: yeah, that's right, robin. deadly barrage across this country. this apartment building took the full force. take a look. every window blown out of this building. people trying to piece their lives back together. you can see the damage up here as well. this is as president zelenskyy doubles down on his claim that that missile in poland came from russia. overnight, a large explosion rocking dnipro. the strike posted by officials. the damage, part of a wave of russian air strikes across ukraine this morning that killed at least four people. the latest barrage comes as investigators on the ground in poland are looking into the missile explosion that killed two people tuesday. u.s., polish, and other nato officials all agree it was likely from ukraine. >> this explosion was most likely the result of a ukrainian

air defense missile that unfortunately landed in poland. >> reporter: it may have come from ukraine, but nato partners say russia bears the blame for the explosion. >> those innocent people would not have been killed if there had been no russian war against ukraine. >> reporter: president zelenskyy still says it was moscow. [ speaking in non-english ] telling reporters, i have no doubt that it was not our missile. it fell just five miles into poland tuesday following a massive russian barrage across ukraine. >> i was there yesterday. >> reporter: meanwhile at the recently liberated kherson airport, the local commander shows us the airfield littered with destroyed russian equipment. this is a russian bunker. they're making sure there are no mines. the war still rages. he raises his finger after he hears the distant russian artillery. we duck for cover. now when you hear that thud in the distance and you hear that

whistle in the air, you have just five seconds to get to cover. robin? >> just five seconds. james, take care, please. george? we stay overseas with the escalating violence in iran. security forces are cracking down on protests in the third month and police were caught on camera opening fire in the subway. maggie rulli is following this. good morning. >> reporter: george, good morning. protesters we spoke to inside iran tell us it's like a battlefield. they're hearing slogans being chanted and gunfire everywhere and showing no signs of slowing down. violence escalating on the streets of iran as protests enter their third month. police crackdowns becoming more brutal. videos posted on social media show a crowd inside a packed subway station fleeing security forces as they open fire with metal pellets. people panicked, rushing for the exits as officers keep shooting. in another video, police are seen storming one of the trains, beating protesters who tried to escape through the subway. protesters are gaining momentum. they mark the anniversary of the deadly 2019 protests in iran

where more than 1,500 people were killed. the protests led by women erupted in september after the death of mahsa amini, a 22-year-old woman who was detained by the morality police for allegedly breaking the country's strict hijab rules. since then, at least 34 protesters have been killed. and more than 14,000 people arrested. of those, five sentenced to death on charges of enmity against god. human activists condemn the arrests, saying they're as a result of unfair trials. 21 people currently face similar charges. and in response to the iranian government increasing crackdown, the u.s. announced sanctions on six members of iran's state-controlled media calling it a, quote, key tool in the iranian government's mass suppression and censorship campaign against its own people. george? >> maggie rulli, thank you. michael? now to the investigation into a terrible crash in california that left some two

dozen sheriff recruits injured. they were out for an early morning run when a car mowed them down. will carr is in california with more. good morning, will. >> reporter: good morning, michael. witnesses say the aftermath of this crash looked like a bomb went off. it all took place just near the fire station behind me. while the recruits detained the driver, firefighters raced to save lives. this morning, new images of the trrifying crash, a wrong way driver slamming into 75 sheriff and police recruits out for a morning run in california. >> the driver at this point is 22 years old. >> reporter: urgent investigation now under way. witnesses say the driver showed no signs of braking and may have fallen asleep at the wheel. >> looked like an airplane wreck. there were so many bodies scattered everywhere. >> reporter: 25 injured, a handful critically. the suv plowing into the unit while in formation, driving at

least 30 miles an hour. the majority of the recruits part of the l.a. county sheriff's department running with two escort vehicles and wearing reflective vests. >> how many patients? how many recruits are injured? >> i'm counting, sir. >> reporter: authorities say the injuries include head trauma, broken bones, even loss of limbs. you can see smoke filling the air after the crash, leaving behind a trail of carnage. police say the driver passed a breathalyzer test. police aren't ruling out any possibilities. the crash jolting the firefighters awake. they were able to respond within seconds. >> any time you have this many people and especially young women and men that are raising a hand to be a first responder, then to become a victim and need first responders in their own right, it's tragic. >> reporter: this morning, five recruits are still in critical condition. it comes as the driver who was injured as well has been detained by authorities as they decide what, if anything, they want to charge him with. michael? >> all right, thank you so much for that. george?

now to elon musk's ultimatum to twitter employees. he laid out instructions for hard core twitter 2.0. those are his words. andrew dymburt is with us. good morning, andrew. >> good morning, george. so elon musk is issuing the most direct message to employees. commit hard core or leave. he said his employees have until 5:00 p.m. today to decide either stay with the company or expect to work long hours at a, quote, high intensity or september three months of severance and quit. this according to interim emails obtained by abc news. this follows a fray of firings. he let go of dozens of employees for being critical of him. musk also saying he'll eventually find a new leader to run the company though it's not clear when. george? >> andrew, thank you very much. robin? george, now to the latest on jay leno's condition as he recovers from serious burns from a gasoline fire. his doctor says he's in good spirits after undergoing the first round of surgery. matt gutman is outside the burn center in l.a. where leno is

being treated. good morning, matt. >> reporter: hey, good morning, robin. his doctors now revealing that leno was actually beneath one of those classic cars when that gasoline ignited and doctors are calling the injuries to his hands, face and chest serious. he had one surgery already and is scheduled for another on friday. this morning, days after a flash gasoline fire in his car garage left him with deep second and potential third degree burns to his face, hands, and chest, doctors say jay leno is doing better than expected. >> i am a little surprised at how well he is doing considering the seriousness of the injuries. most people tend to be a lot more limited due to pain. >> reporter: since he was admitted, leno has already undergone one surgical grafting procedure with another schedule later this week. >> he has serious injuries. there are potentials for scarring. there's a potential for some dysfunction in some of the areas that he's injured in, but there's also a possibility of a very good outcome.

>> reporter: leno, a late night comedic titan is also a car aficionado. >> they fit in any car we have. >> reporter: the host of "jay leno's garage" was working under one of his steam cars when gas ignited on him saturday. dr. peter grossman says given his injuries, the team opted for aggressive surgical treatment and hyperbaric treatment. >> we wanted to do what we could to minimize the swelling and so right away we put him in the oxygen chamber. that helps decrease the swelling which, in turn, decreases the risk of progression to deeper injuries. >> reporter: in a statement released earlier this week, leno acknowledging the severity of the burns but remaining characteristically hopeful saying, he'll need just a week or two to get back on my feet. the 72-year-old is already reportedly on his feet even making friends with fellow patients. >> there are children in the unit. he's delivered them cookies and good wishes and he's really been

an ideal resident in the burn unit for right now. >> reporter: now i have to say, guys the best line from that press conference is when the doctor was asked about his demeanor. he said he's jay leno. he is walking around. he's cracking jokes. he said he was incredibly kind with the nursing staff and, of course, with those patients. the best news out of that press conference was that they are hopeful he will make a full recovery. robin? >> that is the hope. doctors said he is jay leno. all right, matt, thank you. michael? all right. thank you, robin. here is the cherry on top of an incredible comeback season for my buddy and pitcher justin verlander. the 39-year-old won the world series with the astros. won his third cy young award in an unanimous vote after missing most of the past two seasons with a devastating injury. verlander still had one of the best seasons in his 17-year career. he is planning to play in 2023 and i'm sure beyond. after he retires, we know the next stop for him is going to be cooperstown.

kayna whitworth is in moscow, idaho, with the details. good morning, kayna. >> reporter: yeah, george. good morning. authorities telling us that the other two female roommates are cooperating with this investigation. but still, at this point, they have no suspect. they have no murder weapon and they have to leads they're willing to share. what they do have is a college town on edge. some people are so afraid they're packing up and leaving and the university says they're excusing student absences. this morning, as the hunt for the alleged killer of four university of idaho students intensifies, police walking back their original claims that there was no imminent threat to the community. >> we cannot say that there is no threat to the community and as we have stated, please stay vigilant. >> reporter: moscow police addressing the public for the first time since the four off-campus apartment.e but s be locateathitime. >>epter: neo emerging of kaylee anma

really give investigators a lot of information such as manner and time of death and even potentially they can collect dna evidence that can help them track down the killer that, george, this morning is still on the loose. >> that is something. all right, kayna, thank you. let's bring in brad garrett for more on this. what do you make about the revelation of the two other roommates? >> it's interesting and also odd. i mean, if this murder occurred at 4:00 in the morning, they don't report it or someone doesn't report it until noon, what is that all about? they are the key, george, to this case. they were in this house. this type of killing is going to be loud both by the suspect and the victims. it's going to take a period of time. it's obviously going to be very bloody. i just don't really understand that, but they are really the key. it's a small town. the likelihood that they know who that person was in the house i think is reasonable. >> you say the key. what about the fact -- are they suspects? >> well, i don't think so. i mean, they're not talking about them being suspects at all. all i'm suggesting it is an odd thing, right? if you're in a house, four people are brutally killed and

nobody contacts the police for another eight hours? there is a big issue with that. but, no, they're not saying that. but, you know this case, george, is this going to be solvable? i'll tell you why. it's because it's a small community. between cctv, cell phone coverage, who had cell phones out at 4:00 in the morning in or around that house and just doing interviews. i just think this case is not far from being solved, but the police appear to be stymied based on their own comments. >> yeah. they said that there is no threat to at the community and then took it back. what are the next steps? >> the next steps are the following -- you really have to do a complete detail of the party that was prior to whatever was going on between 3:00 and 4:00 at the victim house. they were at another party. who followed them home? who has been dating whom? who have had issues with people?

you know, this killer didn't all of a sudden show up at this house. he knew this house and he was able to get in, it sounds like, with little trouble. >> brad garrett, thank you very much. michael? all right. thank you, george. now to a scary moment caught on camera when a stranger approached a 10-year-old boy and tried to lure him away. this morning we're hearing from him, his father and the store clerk who protected him. whit johnson has the details. pretty amazing how aware everyone involved in this was. >> absolutely. michael, good morning to you, and this is really every parent's fear. a stranger approaching and then following their child after school but this 10-year-old knew exactly what to do and he found safety by remembering something his dad taught him. >> i was scared and shaking. so i was thinking something really fast. >> reporter: it's that quick thinking that helped keep 10-year-old sammy green safe during this frightened close call caught on cameras in pottstown, pennsylvania.

years ago today -- 19 years ago on this day, i had the privilege of flying a vintage world war ii airplane over the airfield in tuskegee, alabama. on this day. 19 years ago. you know who is there? my dad. he was there on the ground. wednesday, yesterday, my siblings, bush, dorothy, we were all at newark liberty international airport where the new roadway servicing terminal a is now colonel roberts road. it is a tribute to my late dad who was also a new jersey native, really proud of him. he not only dedicated his life to service as a tuskegee airman, he was also an aviation and civic pioneer. passionate about the fight for rights and desegregation, he received 18 honors and awards for his 30-plus career in the united states air force and the congressional gold medal. when we saw the digital sign saying colonel roberts road, it meant so much. my dad grew up in new jersey as a kid he would go down to the basement with sawed off broomstick handle thinking it

it was a wild experience. each episode we concentrate on a different pillar of health and wellness and longevity. we were testing that through different extreme, physical and emotional challenges. we went to norway in the arctic. i did a 300-meter swim. it was snowing and raining and we were in board shorts. we climbed a rope 1,000 feet off the ground. we walked across a skyscraper. we had a four day water only fast and a few other wild things. >> what was that like? >> a lot of hangry emotions. i'll say. that yeah. actually, might have been the toughest. as far as the sort of the mood, deconstruction and the physical -- just lack of energy. but then it is interesting on day four, you start to switch into ketosis and your body stops burning carbohydrates and
