♪♪ nothing brings the pack together like a trip to great wolf lodge. now open in northern california. >> this is abc7news. ama: tonight, twitter tear down may be in full effect. this is the scene outside of the san francisco headquarters as everyone is reacting to the company chaos, even more employees choosing to have for the exits leading to the top trending hash tag, rip twitter. good evening. dan: it seems the only thing they talked about online tonight is the twitter meltdown. it started with elon musk's ultimatum to employees to work extremely hard core, his words, or resign. ama: tim johns is tracking the

state of disarray. reporter: it's been a while day. the top trend hash tag is rip twitter. a lot of people are asking, what happens next? elon musk fired half the company's workforce just a few weeks ago. since then, things have gotten more tumultuous. in email, musk gave employees until 2:00 this afternoon to commit to working extremely hard core or be laid off in the company. according to several sources, many employees who got this e-mail did decide to resign including several work -- who work on targeting misinformation and hate speech. the company is in chaos. twitter has not responded for comments but elon musk has been tweeting throughout the evening including one to say that usage had hidden in all-time high. >> this is one of those really unusual cases that's going to go down in corporate history no

matter how it plays out. even if elon musk pulls it off. one of the weirdest acquisitions and first few weeks of someone taking over a company that i've personally ever seen. reporter: it's not just employees who have been bidding twitter farewell. thousands of users have been posting where you can find them on also -- on other social medias if twitter doesn't survive. it remains unclear how many twitter employees have resigned and how many remain working at the company. no one really knows where we go from here. one thing that is probably a reality is that twitter will be a very different place tomorrow than it was even just a few hours ago. abc7news. ama: so many local tech workers being laid off from several companies in recent months. we wanted to turn our attention to the mental health aspect of things and how this is affecting people's daily lives. amanda del castillo yo has the

outlook tonight. reporter: large-scale layoffs sending shockwaves through silicon valley with many learning very quickly, tech is not untouchable. how are these massive cuts across various companies impacting mental health? >> it will take a while for to emerge about how bad this will be for the psychological point of view. reporter: this psychology professor says the holiday season makes this an especially hard time to be hit with job loss. adding, this new generation of tech workers may not have any experience navigating life after being laid off. >> they may be thrown a curveball here on top of very stressful times. that's worrisome. reporter: he was a child during the 2008 recession. >> i asked my dad who experienced it what to do. reporter: he was laid off in mid-october by a bay area tech company. moving from a dual income to single income household, he and his fiancee turned their focus

to finances. >> it changes things. we are pulling back our budget on a lot of items and making sure not to tap into savings early. reporter: cutting down christmas spending and instead investing in self-care. he and his fiancee run a family business so he has managed to keep busy. >> waking up early, driving to ups, dropping them off. it's great working in the warehouse. it's nice. reporter: turning back to tech, he says the general consensus across the industry's cautious optimism that the new year will hold new implement opportunities. he admits there is concern over the unknown. his fiancee also works intact. >> it's not just the people who are laid off who have all the stress. there's the survivors, if you will, who still have their jobs. their friends, their colleagues, their -- when is the next shoe

going to drop? is it going to drop on me? reporter: abc7news. ama: if you are struggling with mental health, there's help. had to abc7news.com for local resources. dan: a man was found dead at a house fire in concord tonight. firefighters say it was set deliberately. the fire broke out around 7:00 tonight. not far away from concord high school. reporter: we've confirmed with contra costa founder -- fire that it was set in multiple locations throughout the house. fire officials say they found one man dead. >> 150 feet in the air. reporter: he began to record with his phone. >> the ash stream, you wouldn't have believed it. it looked like glitter from all

the embers. i was shocked. reporter: fire officials say this house was intentionally set on fire. the victim's brother wouldn't talk on camera but tells abc7news that his brother was 76 years old and owned the house. >> there was somebody in the house that passed away. there were multiple fires set at multiple locations on the property. that is scary to me. i don't like hearing that. reporter: the neighbor is thankful that it's a cold night and not very windy, given how quickly the fire could have spread to nearby homes. >> i'm surprised. i bet if it was windy, it would have been worse than this. reporter: family members of the victim say they still don't know the motive for the fire. abc7news. ama: tomorrow, elizabeth holmes will officially hear her sentence. the case that gained national attentional now focuses in on a san jose federal courtroom.

for -- four years after the fall of her blood testing startup, the question now is how much time if any she could serve in prison. federal prosecutors have asked the set -- judge to sentence her to 15 years in prison and a fine of $800 million. >> the court will be looking at somewhere on the low-end of two to three years. i think on the high-end, somewhere between seven and eight years. under 10 would be my guess. ama: attorneys argue she is already paid a price for her crime and will continue to deal with the aftermath for the rest of her life. dan: now to the end of an era on capitol hill. house speaker nancy pelosi announcing today she will no longer serve as democratic leader in the chamber. she will remain in congress representing san francisco. rachel scott has more on pelosi's message today and the response from her colleagues. reporter: today on capitol hill,

lauren taylor's lead is within just 500 votes. alameda county official savo tate -- counting is taking so long because of mail-in ballots coming in close to election day. >> it put a lot of pressure on us in a very short time to process a couple hundred thousand votes as quickly as we could. we will be looking at processes that we can put in place and some equipment that can help us. this is the new normal. dan: there are more than 60,000 votes left to camp at the registrar says most of them should be done by the end of the day tomorrow. ama: new developments in a story we brought you last night. uc berkeley law school is joining forces with yale and harvard to pull out of u.s. news & world report rankings. in a letter to the community, the dean of uc berkeley says participating in the rankings outweighs the cost. he echoes the dean of other two schools, saying the rankings

this comes eight years after a lake effect system hit the area with five feet of snow and left for -- 13 people dead. the storm is expected to last through sunday. they are used to snow in buffalo. not quite like this. pretty serious for them. let's turn to sandhya patel with our forecast and what a situation in upstate new york. sandhya: this could be of historic proportions. it is going to impact travel as the heavy snow is hitting the area. you will notice right now on live doppler 7, they are expecting this to last several days. some areas around buffalo expected to get over four feet of snow. they've already seen up to a foot. as we take at the warnings that are up, lake effect snow warning on the buffalo side. winter storm warning and pink here. you will notice winter weather advisories and purple. definitely going to be blowing heavy snow. low visibility. it's going to be paralyzing for
