for up to 20 years in prison. the federal prosecutors wanted 15 years. the federal probation department recommended nine. legal experts say this is somewhat more than expected. it is unusual to have a sentence more than what the federal probation department recommends. the four month long trial wrapped nearly a year ago. during that time, there was anticipation for holmes' sentencing and speculation over what the message would send. the judge was very specific, saying he was taking into account the sympathetic factors. she is pregnant with her second child. and also, more than 130 letters that were sent in in support of holmes from family, friend, loved ones, including senator

cory booker and her partner billy evans describing his plea to the judge to be merciful. the judge said he spent a long and hard time thinking about this and wanted to be fair. that is how he is described among his peers. he said he took into account the fact that this scheme went on for five years. one argument that was made by the prosecution that was highlighted through much of this trial that became a strong sentiment for the judge today was the fact that holmes' intent. what she knew. she knew this was a flawed technology but allowed it to get on the shelves of walgreens. when the company was running out of money, she had a choice whether or not to dissolve the company then or to move forward. she chose to move forward and allow that contract to continue as well as recruit new investors.

the judge was very clear that this was a clear choice. he made it a point that this was a complicated case. as we heard from elizabeth holmes herself, taking the stand in tears, expressing to judge davila that she felt extremely remorseful for her actions and that she was not intending to defraud people and that she was sorry. those who witnessed it felt it was not as genuine as they would have expected, given the severity of crimes and the amount of money lost in the fact that it went on for as long as it did. we heard from the father of tyler schultz, alex schultz, who is the son of george schultz, who is an investor and former secretary of state. he spoke directly to homes,

visibly. he was to the left, he looks directly at her and tells how she desecrated his family of all of the continued lies in what it put them through including his son who used to be a former theranos employee and described how in that how when holmes -- holmes hired an investigator and he had to sleep with his knife under the pillow. at the end of the day, it shows this 11 year sentence is sending a clear message to silicon valley that this strong sense of salesmanship will not be tolerated if it is merged into misrepresentation. first an a lot of people were wondering if the pregnancy would soften sentencing. it did not appear to have done that.

kristen: one of the victims in the september shooting on the king estate school campus in oakland has died. davis was one of six adults injured when several gunmen enter the campus and began firing shots. police have said the victims were not the intended targets. larry: a house fire in concord where a body was discovered. police say the man who owned the home was founded near the fire and died by suicide. please say the investigation indicates the band set the fire on purpose. the investigation continues but police say there is no ongoing risk to the public. kristen: today marks 44 years since the jonestown mass murder suicide led by jim jones. jones established a permanent facility for his people's temple in san francisco possible edition in 1971. he relocated his followers to an agricultural commune in guyana. november 18, 19 78, jones and

was responsible for a significant delay in getting money out to those who lost their jobs during the pandemic. the house of representatives committee found the company also inaccurately overstated its capacity to conduct identity verification services. the committee also found idme overstated the amount of money lost to fraudulent claims. they received almost $45 million for work performed for 25 state unemployment agencies. chrysler recalling about one quarter million dodge ram trucks because of an engine fire risk. those include the ram 2500 from 2020-2023 and the 3500 from 2020-2022. pressure building up in the transmission could cause fluid to seep into the engine compartment, potentially causing a fire.

men learned she was transgender. chris and kobe talk to leaders in the community about the impact and what still needs to be done. >> i am gwendolyn smith. i have been a transgender activist for about 30 years. i founded the -- website which later became part of the international transgender day of remembrance. i started chronicling anti-transgender violence primarily because nobody else seemed to be doing it. we were failing to note our deaths and we were seeing cases endlessly repeat. >> trans women, particularly trans women of color, are being brutally murdered throughout the country under the world. few people know their names and their communities suffer in silence. that is why we have a trans day of remembrance every year so we

can at least say their names. at least give them that honor and respect. >> the transgender woman's body was found in the schuylkill river badly mood livid. >> her body found face down, suffering stab wounds, both legs severed. there's still people being murdered for being who they are. in brutal manners. they are tortured. they go through a lot of pain. it is really sad. they go through a lot of pain in their life. >> the case of gwen araujo was a moment of change. a moment where her murderers didn't necessarily get off the hook. it was a time when the media and the public learned about trends lives and trans deaths in ways that had not been approached before.

>> the murder of gwen araujo was one that ignited in me to not really think about what others thought of me, but rather, what is the direction we need to go as a community. >> i came here a week ago. >> people think that just because we are more visible that our social conditions have changed. that is not necessarily true. there are still trans people who are homeless. there are still trans people who have trouble gaining employment or having access to health care. >> governor abbott directed the center for public services to investigate gender affirming cert -- procedures. >> this is trying to sow doubt about kids and their gender identity. it is trying to say that they could be whatever they want to be. >> you are seeing hundreds of laws that have been written in the last couple of years to

legislate trans people. to prevent them from getting an equal footing in schools. to prevent them from using basic facilities. criminalizing our health care and health care providers. these are hard times to be a trans person. >> we are murdered because of the messages and the bias that people create against us and towards us. >> they want to put the parents in prison and put the kids in foster care. imagine the signal that since to trans children. basically that because of who you are, you are going into foster care and your parents are going to prison. is it any wonder these kids are committing suicide at a higher rate? >> it is hard to hear that there are schools that do not allow people to use the word gay. there is a really long time

where i didn't know what it meant to be transgendered. there was a long time where i did not know what non-binary was. i did not have the vocabulary and i did not have the support of people to talk about it. it is huge to have people to talk about it. to hear that, then put yourself in a place like, i am not crazy. >> like, we exist. there is a place in this world for us too. >> this is the bobby jean baker house, a transitional house that is part of the trans program. applicants who are transgender nonconforming and enroll to having a room in this house. transgender nonconforming people

are 18 times more likely to experience homelessness. a lot of times, transgender people might come from homes in which they were not supported in being their authentic selves. they may have run away from home as teenagers and tried to figure out where to go on their own. >> historically, you could not come home to your parents. individuals cannot at 12 or 14, sharing with people. that oftentimes leads to eviction from not just your house, but from your entire family. spaces are important because oftentimes we do not have a space to be ourselves. that space is immediately challenged -- the world is only grappling to understanding it or only understand us for surface reasons. >> when you are with your culture or your people, you do not have to explain yourself about why you are who you are.

you just get to be and live. >> with the work we are doing, trans folks can see themselves as educators. politicians. teachers. leaders. >> if gwen was 17 today, they could be non-binary. today, there is a lot more room for people to feel both masculine and feminine. they can feel neither. they can feel both. i am so impressed with the next generation around their instinctive understanding that there are so many genders that one can both be as well as be attracted to. kristen: we are going to take a deeper look back at gwen araujo's legacy on, "being gwen: a life-and-death story," on our streaming apps.
