catholic priests and staff. >> state law that allows survivors of clergy sexual abuse to file lawsuits no matter how long ago it happened expires in the next month. as a result, there has been a rush of new complaints. no question, hannah boys center has done some good over the years helping boys who struggle with school and family life. abc 7 has covered the residential treatment center run by the catholic church, including this report from 1998 featuring the director at the time, father john cruz. >> and tell the guys, you are not a man yet, but you are going to be. >> but it just paid a large settlement to a man who says father cruz and staff sexually abuse him starting when he was 11. david love tells me he still struggles with the memories. >> i was in town, and some of

that look like father cruz was standing in line, and i wet myself, and i couldn't move. i left. >> in 25 years of covering the clergy abuse crisis, i have never heard an account of such horrific, depraved abuse. love says to this day, he cannot sleep because his attackers often came at night. >> you don't know what the nightmares are like, waking up, not knowing where you're at. i go through this every night, every night. >> he tells me the abuse was common knowledge among staff during his time at the boy center. dr. tim norman was clinical director than. he told me he had to fire staff for what he called grooming behavior. >> saying to a boy, i would be glad to come in and give you a massage if you are so tense.

if we heard that, that person would be terminated. >> norman says he never heard complaints that father cruz had molested boys. >> if i knew of or had any indication, the first thing i would have done would be pick up the phone and call law enforcement. >> cruz has now a long list of victims -- dozens. they keep coming out. >> the survivors network of those abused by priests has been tracking allegations against hannah center, more than a dozen at this point. >> if you look at all the boys that have run through here, it is a hotbed of abuse. nothing has really changed. >> nine former staff from hannah boys center are accused of abuse. the clinical director got arrested in 2017 and is serving 21 years in prison for child molestation. i asked the bishop of the santa rosa diocese to discuss these issues, but he declined and

referred me to hannah boys center. hannah's new ceo set a time for a in-person interview this past wednesday but backed out. his spokesperson said they would be new training on how to spot grooming behavior, windows can a longer be covered, and gps installed on all vehicles that transport the boys. >> they are barely improvements. you've got a really high risk population going there with no power, and because they have no power, a pedophile who knows that will go there and break those rules and get what he wants. >> a state law gives survivors of clergy sexual abuse until the end of next month to file lawsuits, no matter how long the abuse occurred. >> the message is to encourage others to really open up their eyes and say to themselves, why am i acting this way?

dan: let's move on for a moment. today in the south bay federal courthouse, disgraced their nose founder elizabeth holmes was sentenced to 145 months in prison for defrauding investors in her blood testing company -- disgraced their nose -- disgraced theranos founder elizabeth holmes. >> elizabeth holmes' sentence is symbolic on many fronts, but certainly for silicon valley. this is a woman who went from being a rising star pegged to transform the future of health care to now a convicted criminal, and the judge was very clear today that this 11-plus-year sentence is not only fair, but the price to pay for the lies and deception. convicted their nose -- convicted theranos founder elizabeth holmes left court knowing she has been sentenced

for defrauding investors. the soon to be mom of two was seen rushing back -- rushing past bystanders. >> she and billy came at the door, and she turned around briefly, and they ran across the street past. >> homes excepted 20 years in prison. federal prosecutors wanted 15 years. >> i think it was a tough case, and, yeah, she got what she deserved, i think. i do. >> the sentence was long. coming into it, i thought it would be more like five to seven. seems harsh. >> judge edward davila says he thought long and hard about his decision, taking into account both sides, everything from the 130 letters sent to support homes to her gross misrepresentation and lies that spanned five years. court representation showed homes -- holmes took the stand saying she took response ability for the company's failure. >> to my mind, it is notable she

dan: vta cut the ribbon to its new and improved blossom hill interchange in san jose today. the project includes a new bridge over 101. vta and city officials took a tour today of this $35 million project which took two years to complete. here is a live look at traffic around the bay area. we are checking three bridges. the golden gate moving nicely. the bay bridge toll plaza, which i mentioned going into the break, kind of big best tonight, and the san mateo bridge busy but moving along fairly smartly. at some point we have all set in bay area traffic, of course, and research finds that most of it is our fault. now the world's largest open track traffic experiment is being done to test technology that may help drivers overcome our shortcomings. zach fuentes spoke with researchers who hope that this will alleviate congestion and build a better bay area.

>> it is one of the most aggravating things on the road, being stuck in congestion for an extended amount of time only to clear it and see that there was no accident or other obvious cause. expert call it a phantom traffic jam caused by human behavior. these researchers and students from uc berkeley are pioneering car automation software that can help alleviate those traffic jams and even reduce energy consumption. >> we have been testing them extensively, but the data we collect in the real world can give us definitely more inside. >> these students are in nashua hoping to test them in the real world on the open road. >> finally seeing them run on real cars, seeing the speeds that can change in real time, it is really remarkable. >> the research has been led and some big names -- some big name have been on board.

>> with the data, we make a decision. >> before this large-scale test, 20 cars were tested on a closed track with only one car that had the automation system. they found that that one car alleviated the stop and go pattern that causes congestion and changed the driving behavior of the other 20 cars. their goal with this large-scale open track test is to see if that improvement can hold. while we are still many years from rolling this out, researchers say so far, so good. >> we have high hopes to reduce traffic in the bay area, and i'm going to help them achieve that. ama: this will be the third busiest next giving travel period since 2000 according to aaa. the number of travelers a sickly back to pre-pandemic levels. 54 million people are expected to travel over the holiday. 89% will drive. 80 be one of the busiest

king estate school complex in east oakland. one of the workers shot almost two months ago during a school shooting has passed away. he never left the hospital. >> on a personal note, i'm distraught. >> we are stunned. i'm almost speechless. certainly was not expecting to hear that. >> in this email, the director of the oakland unified school district buildings and grounds department broke the news to his staff. dave passed away thursday morning. he was a carpenter for the school district, described as a valued employee since 2004. at the complex where he was shot along with five others, the superintendent of the charter school on campus remembers david as someone who always wanted to help. >> he was a very friendly, kind, respectful, gentle human being

who just lent a hand. >> the school district described david cresson an involved staff member, saying, "we are devastated by the loss of david, are heartbroken for his family and community. he will be sorely missed. our community mourns the loss of a district hero." he went out of his way to do something that played a key role to keep students safe the day of the shooting. to them, he was also a hero. >> he helped us this summer and helped us install our wireless pa and bell system, which we used during that day. we are eternally grateful for his work because it kept us safe and secure on that day. >> lpd -- opd has not made any arrests in the shooting.

one of david's coworkers who did not want to be on camera is urging city officials in the district to do more to protect students and staff. dan: new details, all five victims of a deadly crash in pittsburgh have been identified. the three children killed in the crash were ages 4, 5, and nine. they were in the white hyundai the launcher, driven by a 27-year-old -- hyundai elantra. that car was going the wrong way just after midnight thursday when it slammed head-on into a white ford flex. the chp is still piecing together exactly what led up to this terrible, terrible crash. investigators in los angeles county are trying to build a case against a man they believe deliberately ran into a group of law enforcement recruits. the suspect was released from custody last night because of lack of evidence, but they continue to investigate. 75 recruits were on a run when the driver crashed into the

group wednesday in whittier just before dawn. 25 of them were injured, two critically. a foot chase on the freeway is bringing to light the problem of auto burglaries in san francisco. there's a new abc 7 news tool to help keep track of crimes across the bay area. >> as tricia yearwood's 1998 hit played on the radio, a tow truck driver captured this stunning foot chase on southbound 101 where plainclothes sfpd officers arrested two men and a juvenile in connection to a string of auto burglaries. >> you got him, you got him, you got him! >> sfpd received at least six calls alerting them to the same getaway vehicle. year to date through september,

auto burglaries are up 12% in san francisco. for other crimes, the abc 7 news crime and safety tracker shows overall burglaries are down in the last 12 months compared to the annual average from the past three years. the tool also allows users to track other crimes such as assaults, homicides, and theft broken down by neighborhood across oakland and san jose as well. for example, users can look at the rate in oakland and see it is up by 21 incidents compared to the yearly average. in san jose, that number is down. the tracker goes one step beyond in contextualizing what that means for you. a 3.1% homicide rate per 100,000 people is a much lower risk than that of dying in a vehicle crash in california. the neighborhood safety tracker is updated regularly so you can see how incidents like this play into the greater scheme of
