>> building a better bay area. moving forward, finding solutions. this is abc 7 news. >> deadly nightclub shooting. at least five people killed and more than a dozen hurt and lgbtq nightclub in colorado -- doesn't hurt at and lgbtq night -- dozen hurt at an lgbtq nightclub. i am liz kreutz here with lisa argen. we will get to that breaking news in just a moment but let's start with a look at the weather and the nice weekend we had. lisa: definitely a cold start out there as we look at live doppler 7 and the cloud cover. just a little bit of it to the north. look at that 28 in the votto, fairfield at 29 and we have

plenty of 30's from san ramon to livermore. 41 in oakland, anywhere from the couple of degrees to as much as 16 degrees colder. it is a frosty start out there, and we will be looking at another mild afternoon. the preview from the exploratorium camera, sunny skies with a few high clouds and mild temperatures today with low to mid-60's by late in the afternoon and then we are looking under the cold night tonight and we will talk about warmth before we see a return to reign in my extended outlook. liz: back to that developing news in colorado. five people dead and at least 18 others hurt after a shooting at a gay nightclub in colorado springs. police were called just after midnight local time to the venue for reports of an active shooter. officials say a suspect is an in -- is injured and in custody.

the fbi is assisting with the investigation. the club described the attack as quote, a hate attack. today is transgender day ever member rents, in 2016 a nasa shooter opened fire at a nightclub in orlando, florida killing 49 people and injuring more than 50. we will keep you updated on developments. pamela price is set to become alameda county's first ever black district attorney. throughout her campaign she printed herself as a staunch reform advocate. her supporters and and the community hope she will finally be the change they've been pushing for. >> many committed to say palomino price's win signals -- >> it speaks to the energy and the community's willingness to think about how do we reimagine public safety. >> sandy is with the urban peace

movement, an advocacy group that seeks alternatives to incarceration and investing more in violence prevention programs. she acknowledges the attempts at reforms of the current das office but she adds with price, things could be different. >> we believe reforms are not happening fast enough and we aren't seeing the full benefit and use of some of the alternatives that are being put in place. >> she says price promises more transparency and community engagement. she points to price's specific programs like ending the practice of charging youth as adults and expanding youth diversion programs which are alternatives to jail. she sees those as big shifts to the kernodle justice system, especially for communities of color. >> thinking about how do we move away from these units of systems and actually tackle public safety -- punitive systems and actually tackle public safety.

comprehensive approach. >> we are witnessing a change in alameda county right now. >> after her win, price tweeted my administration will begin an era of change that ultimately makes us stronger and safer. she takes office in january. liz: coming up on this week, more on the midterm elections as republicans narrowly win control of the house. former speaker paul ryan will talk about the challenges facing the slim majority, the gop agenda and the party's future. you can watch the full interview at 8:00 this morning right here on abc seven. developing news involving twitter. former president donald trump can tweet again. elon musk revealed that trump's account has been reinstated. the decision reverses a band that kept trump off the social media site for nearly two years since the attack on the u.s. capitol on january 6 of 2021.

muska made the announcement after conducting a poll on twitter that asked users to click yes or no on whether trump's account should be restored. after 15 million votes, the yes vote won with close to 52%. trump has not yet tweeted and has previously said he would remain on his own prep -- own platform, truth social. the family of a northern oakley woman finally has some closure. they traveled to the site were some of her remains were found earlier this month. the family held a vigil in the town of plymouth about 80 miles east of oakley. an orange flag marks the spot where the sheriff investigators made the discovery. investigators say her former boyfriend killed her. he was later shot and killed by authorities in the seattle area as they tried to arrest him in june. police in el cerrito are asking for the public's help after the kidnapping of a nine-year-old girl. she was last seen on tuesday. police say her father did not

return the child to her mother after visitation. they say he is intentionally concealing her whereabouts and actively avoiding law enforcement. a warrant has been issued for his arrest. if you see him or his daughter, call police. in oakland, a search is underway for this car which was used in a possible kidnapping on friday night. witnesses told police they saw two women struggling with each other at the intersection of harrison and pearl streets at 5:30 at night. both women eventually got into the gray older model honda sedan. investigators believe it was a case of domestic violence. police are asking for the public's help in finding the car. a key part of building a better bay area as you prepare for the holidays, health experts are weighing in about how to keep safe. experts say it is important to be up-to-date on your covid and flu vaccines. testing for covid-19 at home before high-risk activities like travel and indoor events without masks is recommended.

officials warn of a possible spike in covid cases. there is potential for a triple-demic with rising flu and rsv cases putting a strain on hospitals across the country. people who get vaccinated against covid can also get into the children's discovery museum in san jose for free. the museum is partnering with the stanford flu crew for a vaccination clinic. everyone six months and older are eligible for this. if one person gets vaccinated, they receive up to five free tickets. the clinic at the museum is from 9:30 to 12:30 and then 1:30 until 4:30. a new unity mural the ne mural titled all our children united represents the historical bond between these two communities. the paint contractor shares what the process was like for him.

liz: the first muni metro trains are taking riders on the long-awaited central subway. after a four-year delay, the nearly two mile extension is finally connecting the city's south of market neighborhood with chinatown. cornell barnard took a ride and gives us a look at what it means to the community. cornell: muni passengers are boldly going where no transit riderd have gone -- riders have

gone before. >> i'm glad this finally got built. it was expensive but i think it is going to help connect chinatown to the rest of the city. >> this is amazing. i had no idea how beautiful it would be. it has been an amazing morning in chinatown. cornell: the new central subway runs north to south across the city with three new underground stations linking soma to union square and chinatown. here at the union square station, check out how huge this escalator is. 100 feet from street level down to the platform. that was one of the main engineering challenges. >> i haven't taken the stairs yet and i may not for quite a while. cornell: a blessing ceremony at the chinatown station, named after a committed advocate. the chinese chamber of commerce president said the new subway line is a long time coming. >> it could not come at a better

time, as chinatown is recovering. first the pandemic, also anti-asian hate and the slowdown of businesses in general. cornell: a 25% cost overrun which is significant. the $1.9 billion project was over budget and four years late. >> we hit a river we were not expecting. we hit archaeological sites that resulted in extraordinary fines. this isn't just the filming of a promise. it moves chinatown 20 minutes closer to the east bay and caltrain and the peninsula. cornell: rides will be free on weekends through december. the central subway grand opening is january 7, 2023. liz: the chp is investigating two separate shootings on the same bay area freeway. it happened early yesterday

morning on eastbound interstate 80 in oakland. officers tell us the shooting involved two vehicles. one person in one of the cars was killed by gunfire. two others writing in the car were hurt but will survived -- riding in the car were hurt but will survive. lane's on 80 were closed for hours. in menlo park, a man was beaten and robbed during a date on friday night. the two were sitting inside the victim's car around 6:00. two suspects pulled the victim out of the car, pistol whipped him and stole his cash. the woman the victim met on a dating app escaped with the suspects. the victim was treated at a hospital and released. in the castro district come our vote -- residents are taking charge to clear a public sidewalk of tenants and -- tents and drug dealers. the sidewalk had been taken over by un-housed people in neighbors say there was a fair amount of

drug dealing as well. now with city approval, these planters filled with succulents and other drought resistant plants are being placed on the site. the hope is dissuade -- the hope is to dissuade the tents. events are taking place across the world for people killed in traffic crashes every year. walk sf says millions of people are hurt and killed in these crashes every year. san francisco will hold their eighth annual event outside city hall. organizers will gather and share stories starting at 4:00. there will also be a candlelight vigil at 5:00. this week the presidio of san francisco will see new changes encouraging people to get outside. it is through the slow streets program implement during the pandemic. new pavement markings and signage will be added, catering to those on bikes, wheelchairs and on foot. it also adds custom street art, logs and boulders. visitors can expect the process to take up to three weeks.

parade this thursday right before santa makes his. the performer lineup also includes sets by gloria stefon, paula abdul, kirk franklin and a whole lot more. just hearing that, like ok, it's the holidays, we are here. lisa: definitely getting in the mood and certainly cold enough in the morning. we are looking at temperatures below freezing in parts of the bay area, and we are looking at the extended outlook eating better in line with bringing some rain back to the bay area this time next weekend. that will be some good news. as we look at live doppler 7, high pressure firmly in control throughout the pacific northwest and down through california. checking on the folks in the great lakes where they continue to see that lake effect snow. the good news is for western new york, may be an additional one to two inches all stop and we are looking at that snow on the other si of now it is lake ontas

bringing in the snow bands. they could still pick up another foot on the eastern side of lake erie but i think six feet is enough, down around buffalo where the bills play. as we get back to our numbers, 35 degrees in candlewood, 33 in santa clara. temperatures are certainly colder here and we will look for the numbers to stay pretty nippy. 31 in danville as well as santa rosa. looking at mid 30's in lafayette and livermore. over by the water, we are cooler but not as cold. out in the outlying areas, 11 to 15 degrees cooler in the valley. from the east bay hills camera, it is dark out there, the

cameras shaking just a little bit and the remnants of that offshore flow, so we are clear and chilly this morning, mainly mild sunny days with a few high clouds into your monday and then high pressure builds back into wednesday and thanksgiving day and that is going to bring as much as five to 10 degrees above average for thanksgiving. here is a look at some of those high clouds throughout the afternoon. you see a few of them and as we get into your monday, very thin veil of high clouds. mainly sunny and pleasant with temperatures around average before we see them come up to above average readings. 65 today, downtown looking for mid-60's in oakland, so a nice afternoon. on the peninsula from the mid 60's in palo alto, upper 60's in san jose. up in the north bay, it is at or above freezing. the accuweather 7 day forecast, cold the next several mornings

with high clouds today and monday and as we get into the day before thanksgiving and thanksgiving day, that ridge builds and we are up to near 70 around the bay. the warmest valleys will be very mild. by next weekend, we could paint a little rain on that saturday icon. it is definitely cold out there in the morning but the afternoon is nice and mild. liz: it is going to be a nice week ahead. all of the food shopping, always crazy when it's raining. just ahead, a scam morning. what you need to be on the lookout for if you plan to get a pet this holiday season.

scammers may try to take advantage of you. we have the warning from the better business bureau. >> -- her constant companion for eight years. she wanted to surprise her son with a dog of his own. >> we found one that spoke his name to us and we were like, this is the one. >> daphne found the pet on an online pet store. she sent in her deposit and waited for the puppy to arrive at oakland international airport. >> so i was waiting, waiting for the plane. i was looking, looking, and then the plane never showed. >> the better business bureau says consumers are often enticed with cute photos of puppies stolen from someone else online. >> a lot of the scam websites we see use those really good enticing photos.

obviously we all get warm and fuzzy when we see a cute puppy. >> judy found her corgi on a website for sale. that puzzled her because abby had been euthanized following a fight with cancer. she thinks somebody stole her photos off of her facebook page. >> it is degrading to show my beautiful dog, for somebody to scam people out of money. > it doesn't end there. the bbb says scammers require a large upfront deposit. daphne says the people who sold her a puppy demanded additional money for a special crate and other fees. 18 months later, she still has not received her puppy. >> it just keeps happening and happening because people want that puppy so bad. liz: today is transgender day of her membranes, a day to memorialize people killed due to transgender hatred -- anti-transgender hatred.

-- crew -- true crime documentary tells the story of a bay area teenager who was killed 20 years ago, and her murder still impacts us today. >> this tells the story of not just the murder of gwen, which was very brutal, but also just her life. she was 14 years old when she made the transition and her mom was very accepting at the time and said if you want to live as a woman, i will support you, but even she at that time didn't know what strands -- what transgender meant and at the time she was calling her eddie when she was being interviewed, so she also went through a the lucian -- volute -- volition with that. she went on and became an advocate for the transgender community. liz: you can watch being glenn: a life and death story on our live 20 47 streaming channel.

>> building a better bay area. moving forward, finding solutions. this is abc 7 news. liz: back to our developing news in colorado. police in colorado springs are investigating a deadly shooting at an lgbtq nightclub. at least five people are dead and 18 others injured. law enforcement says it happened while club q was hosting a drag show. police say they have a possible suspect in custody who was also hurt. the nightclub shared this statement on facebook saying quote, club q is devastated by

this senseless attack on our community. we thank the quick reactions of heroic customers that subdued the gunman and ended this hate attack. we will keep you up-to-date on any developments. a mass shooting at a nightclub in colorado springs. good morning everyone and thank you for joining us. lisa: it has certainly changed overnight with cold conditions. the wind is calm and as we check out our current readings, we are in the mid 30's. belmont at 39. the coast back up into the 50's but mid 30's from concorde to livermore. 29 in santa rosa. napa at 38. anywhere from two to 16 degrees colder than yesterday. we will look at those numbers to continue to drop throughout the

next two hours. sunny skies and upper 40's inland. 11:00, more sunshine and near 60 in gilroy. by 1:00, low to mid 60's and by the afternoon, some very high clouds temperatures warmest north and south bay. we'll talk about a slight cool down for the week ahead. liz: a north carolina family is waiting for answers after a 14-year-old girl was hit and killed during a christmas parade in raleigh. the driver of the truck that hit her is facing several charges. christine sloan has the latest from witnesses. christine: as police investigate the death of a young girl struck and killed by a pickup truck after it lost control at a christmas parade, witnesses are speaking out. >> it was moving fast, slowed down. it was pretty scary. we moved back and tried to get out of the way. they had it handled. christine: the vehicle was

pulling a float carrying members of the cici and company dance troupe. the victim was one of the dance performers in front of the truck. they heard the driver yelling out his window that he lost control and couldn't stop. >> you could tell it wasn't like they were on the gas. they were rolling down the street and freaking out and yelling at people to get out of the way. christine: people could be seen on video scattering as the truck continued to move forward. police and several other bystanders jumped in front, bringing it to a standstill. the young girl was taken to a nearby hospital, where she died of her injuries. the governor of north carolina tweeting, we instead mourn for this family and their friends as we keep them in our prayers. police say the driver was arrested and charged with several counts including misdemeanor death by motor vehicle, careless and reckless driving, and carrying a firearm in a parade.

following the incident, the parade was immediately canceled. liz: san mateo police are trying to prevent catalytthefts with ad kit. the sebody tries to remove a catalytic converter. police say you can install the kit without a mechanic. they are only available to san mateo residents. a bay area research project is uncovering secrets deep in the ground. one of those is a potential new way to capture precious water from passing storms. dan: recently, researchers from stanford have flown across california on a kind of airborne treasure hunt, probing hundreds of feet into the ground with electromagnetic signals in a search for liquid gold. water or more precisely a place to capture it. >> there is going to be more

intense storms, more intense droughts. the idea is when we have intense storms, capture floodwater, divert it to locations such as this, get it into the ground to recover from the previous drought or prepare for the next. dan: rosemary is a researcher with the school of sistine ability. a new study confirms the airborne technology ability to locate what are now popularly called paleo valleys, pathways created thousands of years ago by the movement of glaciers that once stretched down from the sierra. experts believe they could act like a high-speed express lane to carry diverted floodwater deep into the aquifer. >> water managers are looking at how they could use an existing aqueduct or irrigation canal or a series of irrigation ditches to prime locations for recharge. dan: one prime location is a site discovered near fresno.

the executive officer of the north kings groundwater sustainability agency and manager with fresno irrigation district says planners are hoping to potentially use the new data to help with critical groundwater recharge programs, in an area hard-hit by the ongoing drought. >> we will be able to maximize recharge potential. that is what it is all about, when the rain and heavy wet seasons come, want to be able to put as much water into the underground as possible. dan: to help make that happen, she is new you -- she is using a new grant to create an online mapping system. the goal is to help everyone from water agencies to farmers identify locations that could be optimized for groundwater recharge. >> there is so much space below the ground surface where we could store water. in some ways the worse our grand -- groundwater situation gets, the more space we have for storage. dan: perhaps revolutionizing the

it is going to get reinvigorated after a couple systems passed overhead. right now it is all about the cold air. look at that freezing in walnut creek. 36 in pleasant hill and lafayette as well as pittsburgh with 35 in livermore. in t north bay, 28 in the votto, low 30's in santa rosa. did 30's from mountain view. right along the coast in spots, it is milder. san francisco in the upper 40's. anywhere from a couple degrees to 60 degrees colder, look at that 15 degrees drop from this time yesterday. that is due to the lighter wind and that dry air in place. a live look outside where it is pretty quiet up there. we're looking for lighter wind with temperatures in the near average range and we will see more uniform readings as we look at a clear start, a cold morning with mild sunny days through the week ahead, as much as five to

10 degrees above average. it is going to be bright and beautiful but changes look to occur about seven days from now. look for mid-60's in cupertino with just a few high clouds and along the peninsula, about the same with high clouds in the afternoon. downtown near average at 63 with 65 in daly city and up in the north bay, it has been pretty mild with that 30 degree jump to the afternoon highs. 68 in santa rosa and novato from the upper 20's to mid 60's this afternoon and on the east bay a beautiful afternoon with union city, fremont, castro valley coming in at about 67 with 65 in san ramon and pleasanton. it is not a lot of change, the storm track remains well into british columbia. stopping this on thursday, as the ridge rebuilds, a couple
