ikea announcer: building a better bay area, moving forward, finding solutions. this is abc 7 news. >> deadly nightclub shooting. at least five people killed and more than one doesn't hurt atlanta lgbtq nightclub in colorado springs. a possible suspect in custody. that nightclub is closed until further notice after the deadly shooting. five people are dead. at least 18 others are hurt. police were called after midnight local time to the venue called club q for reports of an active shooter. sources say shooting happened while the club was hosting a drag show last night. the club was getting ready to host a drag brush event for today in celebration of transgendered a remembrance. a possible suspect is injured

reporter: sandy is with the urban peace movement, a group that seeks alternatives to incarceration and investing in more violence prevention programs. she acknowledges the attempt at reform at the current da's office but she adds things could be much different. >> we believe that reforms are not happening fast enough and that we are not seeing the full benefit of some of the alternatives that are being put in place. reporter: she says price promises more transparency and community engagement. she points to her specific programs like ending the practice of charging youth as adults and expanding diversion programs, alternatives to jail. she sees it as big shifts in the criminal justice system especially for communities of color. >> it gives us hope in thinking about how do we move away from these punitive systems and really tackle public safety. >> they could have a similar

platform but the difference is in that pamela comes with new ideas outside of the box thinking. reporter: deputy director of political engagement at a community labor organization that fights for lower wage workers. he says price's proposal for more please accountability are the types of reforms that they hope the d.a. can deliver. >> they have a lot of power in convicting or what is the charge for you. there are opportunities for mental health programs. reporter: in san francisco, voters had similar ideas for criminal justice reform but their newly elected progressive d.a. was ousted in a recall election in june. the fact that price won just months after on a comparable progressive platform shows that alameda county voters want a

after 50 million votes, the yes vote won with close to 52%. trump has not yet tweeted and he previously said he would remain on his own platform, truth social. the family of alexis gabe finally has closure. they traveled to the site where some of her remains were found earlier this month. the family held a vigil employment, 80 miles east of locally. an orange flag marks the spot where investigators made the discovery. investigators say her former boyfriend killed her. he was later shot and killed by authorities in the seattle area as they tried to arrest him in june. police are asking for the public self -- public's help after the killing of a 19-year-old girl. police say her father did not return the child to her mother after visitation and they say he is intentionally concealing her whereabouts and actively avoiding law enforcement. at warrant has been issued for his arrest. if you see him or his daughter, you are asked to call police.

into the kids discovery museum in san jose for free. the museum is partnering with the stanford flu crew vaccination clinic. he went six months and older is eligible. if one person gets vaccinated, they receive up to five free tickets for the whole family. the clinic is from 9:30 to 12:30 and from 1:30 to 4:30. a new mural is on display under the highway number one overpass. they held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the tunnel. the new mural titled, "all of our children united" represents the bond between the communities. the contractor shares what the process was like for him. >> this is a community-driven project. day one we started out with the schematic of trying to bring both communities together. the fruition, as you can see. liz: it is designed with more than 500 blue handprint that put on a sunrise and sunset

chilly night. we will pick out the subtle differences and detail thanksgiving and beyond in a few minutes. liz: thank you. developing now, a north carolina family is waiting for answers after a 14-year-old girl was hit and killed during a christmas parade in raleigh. the driver is facing several charges. christine sloan hears from witnesses. christine: as police investigate the death of a young girl struck and killed by a pickup truck after it lost control at a christmas parade, witnesses are speaking out. >> it was moving kind of fast. they did a really good job responding. it was scary. we tried to get out of the way. they had it handled by the time it stopped. lisa: the vehicle was carrying members of the dance troupe. the victim was one of the dancers performing in front of the truck. witnesses say they heard the driver yelling out of his window that he had lost control and could not stop. >> you could tell they were not

gassing. it was rolling down the street. they were yelling at people, get out of the way. you could tell they were panicking. christine: people can be seen on video scattering as the truck continued to move forward. police and other bystanders jumping in front, attempting to take it to a standstill. the young girl was taken to the hospital where she died of her injuries. >> the governor tweeting, we mourn for this family and their friends as we keep them in their prayers. christine: police say the driver was arrested and charged with several counts including misdemeanor death by motor vehicle, careless and reckless driving and carrying a firearm in a parade. following the incident, the parade was immediately canceled. christine sloan, abc news, new york. liz: san mateo police are trying to prevent catalytic converter fast with the first of its kind

marking kit. it includes two multiple -- two labels with identification number, metal etching fluid and a sticker winter. you can install the kit without the help of a mechanic. they are only available to san mateo residents. a pretty smart idea. a bay area research project is uncovering secrets in the ground. as dan ashley explains, one of those is a potential new way to capture precious water from passing storms. dan: researchers from stanford have flown across california on an airborne treasure hunt, probing into the ground in the search for liquid gold. water, or more precisely, a place to capture it. >> there will be more intense storms, more intense droughts. the idea is when we have intense storms, capture floodwater, divert it to locations such as

this, get it into the ground to recover from the previous drought or prepare for the next. dan: she is a researcher with the school of sustainability. she released a new study confirming the technology's ability to locate what are now called paleo-valleys. they are pathways created thousands of years ago by the movement of glaciers that once stretched down from the ceric. filled with porous material, experts believe they can act like an express lane to carry floodwater deep into the aquifer. >> there are water managers looking at how they can use an existing aqueduct or irrigation canal or a series of ditches to move water to prime locations. one location is a paleo valley site discovered near fresno. executive officer of the north king groundwater sustained ability agency and a manager with the fresno irrigation district says planners are hoping to use the data to help

with critical groundwater recharge programs in an area hard-hit by the states ongoing drought. >> we will be able to maximize recharge potential and that is what it is all about. when the rain and the wet seasons come, we want to be able to put as much water into the underground as possible. dan: to make that happen, they are using a new grant to combine the airborne survey with ground data to create an online mapping system. the goal is to help everyone from water agencies to farmers identify locations that could be optimized for groundwater we charge -- recharge. >> there is so much space below the groundwater -- below the surface. the worse the water situation gets, the further down the water levels go, the more space we have for storage. dan: perhaps revolutionizing the way california manages its water supply. liz: researchers say versions of the technology can be used in smaller areas to locate optimal

in napa, usually the cold spot. it could be colder than that. that goes to novato, livermore and concord. clear and chilly this morning. mild sunny days throughout the week and we will look for a few weak disturbances to bring some high clouds before thanksgiving. that includes tomorrow, tuesday and by wednesday high pressure builds. even warmer for the holiday and the wednesday before the day of thanksgiving and then after that, it looks like we will get in line with more clouds when this ridge finally weaken and hopefully some different weather heading our way involving rain. 67 santa clara. in sunnyvale on the peninsula, a little bit of high clouds but still a sunny afternoon with 65. menlo park, los altos in the upper 60's as you look at downtown, normal highs within one degree or so once again. 65. daly city in the mid 60's. in the north bay it has been a

least five people have died and 18 are injured after a shooting at a gay nightclub in colorado springs. sources say it happened while club q was hosting a show. the cb was getting ready to of remembrance.orio otrenr the club is now closed until further notice. police have a possible suspect in custody. that person was also hurt. authorities do not have -- have not determined a motive for the shooting. the club is calling it a hate attack. stay with abc7 news for updates as we learn more throughout the morning. a really sad start to this morning, again, another mass shooting in the u.s.. lisa, a final check of the weather before we say goodbye. lisa: you may want to wait a couple of minutes before you head out. it is cold out there. temperatures in santa clara are in the low 30's. san jose, 40. 33 palo alto. 40 in oakland.
