rippling right here into the area. the lgbtq plus community showing strength tonight. good evening. i'm dion lin. the shooting happened just before midnight saturday at the club q in colorado springs. five people were killed. 25 others injured. the violence is felt so intensely here at home. we do have team coverage tonight of the emotional reaction from accord to bay area. but we begin now with abc news reporter, andrew dymburt with the very latest in colorado springs. >> a memorial continues to grow outside of club q, an lgbtq nightclub and the scene of the latest mass shooting in this country. the suspect 22 year-old anderson lee aldridge armed with an a.r. style gun began shooting as he entered the club. the initial 911 calls came in just before midnight. officers arriving at the scene within about three minutes. two minutes later, the dealleged

gunman was detained. >> i heard shots. broken glass. bodies. it was -- how? why? >> two club goers being hailed as heroes. >> we had two incredibly brave citizen that is were inside the club. and as soon as they could, they grand on to him. and -- and detained him for us and they potentially stopped a lot of people from getting killed. >> among the victims 28 year-old daniel davis aston, a bar tender. his mother telling abc news, her youngest son daniel was amazing and that he was our baby. >> president biden calling the attack sense less saying that we cannot holl rate hate.

ridge who was found with a rifle and multiple magazines. he entered club q firing multiple rounds. two brave people held him down until police arrived on the scene. joshua thurman was at the club when he heard those shots. >> it was so scary. i heard shots. broken glass, bodies. it was -- how? why? dion: a previous arrest from the shooter is part of the investigation. last year, he was charged with kidnapping and menacing after threat tong hurt his mother with a bomb that was never located. police are arresting the mass shooting as a hate crime. the shooting at club q is shaking san francisco's castro district. the lgbtq plus community is mourning the loss but sending an outpouring of support. that's where col cornell bernard

the castro say they're reviewing their security measures. in san francisco, abc7 news. dion: members of the lgbtq plus community at the spar center are commemorating transgender day of remembrance by watching screaming queen to honor lgbtq history. >> you know, for somebody to come into that space and commit such a heinous violent act it hurts. it's really, really disheartening and really just awful. dion: they say there is still a lot of work to do in the fight for equality for all. elected leaders near the bay area and in colorado were quick to condemn today's attack. governor gavin newsom said our hearts are with colorado and those impacted by this terrible community the mayor saying hate and

violence has no place in san francisco or this country. and u.s. congresswoman jacky spear of south fran saying the nonzation of our lgbtq plus community has fielded horrific acts of violence for too long. we must sen a message that hate has no place here. the transgender day of remembrance is the time to remember those honored. in honor, we are releasing our latest abc7 original. the true crime documentary tells the story of gwen araujo. he was killed 20 years ago with an impact that lives today. she focuses on the struggle. her gender transition of 20 is and in october of 2002 that led to her death at the hands of several men who discovered she was trance gender.

as december 5th after a cooling off period ends with the 12 unions involved. the railroad companies can afford to give them for. san francisco's new central subway was closed after a smoke along-term left arm was set off at about 4:00 this afternoon. san francisco fire deemed it to be a false alarm saying it was possibly set off by dust or even a system error. the trains were still kept running just closed to everyone entering the stale from the rest. the system was reset and stations reopen about an hour later. starstarting this week, change e coming to the presidio. encouraging more people to get outside. no roads will be closed during the two to three-week improvement. new markings and signage will be added: was implemented during the pandemic. those changes will give extra space with those walk around.
