rosa, 26 in foing freing mp widespread 30's along the east bay valley. pretty chilly. our peninsula at 34, 30 nine in san mateo. despite cold numbers, it is milder than yesterday at this hour. high clouds on the way, a partly cloudy afternoon. temperatures once again in the mid-60's for most. reggie: the nation waking up this morning grappling with another mass shooting and another incident of violence against the lgbtq+ community. a gunman killed five people and injured 25 more and in lgbtq nightclub in colorado springs late saturday night. the accused gunman is now in custody as police investigate. we do have reaction all across the bay area in the country this morning. we are going to start with jobina at the live desk, with heroes who say -- who police say prevented even more deaths.

jobina: there is such a momentous loss in the community. o peoplside the are called rning. ed the suspect, grabbing his gun and hitting him with it, putting an end to the terror that could have taken many more lives. frantic calls to 911 started rolling in around midnight from club q. it is about a 22-year-old with a semi-automatic rifle. >> it was so scary. i heard shots, broken glass, bodies. how? why? jobina: vigils are growing this morning outside of club q. and across the nation. people at the bar say they had never seen the suspect before. police have not released a motive, but they are investigating this as a hate crime. kumasi: in the wake of this

tragic shooting, san francisco's lgbtq+ community is coming together in force. gloria rodriguez is joining us out of the newsroom with more on this. gloria: good morning. the bay area waking up to the news from the tragic shooting in colorado on sunday. it was triggering to many in the lgbtq+ community who have witnessed other shootings targeting them nationally. the san francisco men's gay chorus serenading those gathered last night in the wake of the deadly shooting at an lgbtq+ nightclub in colorado springs. five people gunned down and club -- gunned down at club q.. the impact felt here in the bay area. >> it's not lost on a lot of people that this is following executions of our mayor. connecting the dots to today, we don't see the change that we

really wanted. we are seeing bigotry and hatred. gloria: some had also gathered on the steps of san francisco city hall to honor trans lives lost this year. the interim executive director of san francisco pride said it is always a sad day. the recent tragedy is adding to that. but it is not hopeless. reggie: thank you. local leaders also reacting to the shooting in colorado. state senator scott wiener says it may be a product of increased anti-lgbtq loss and sentiments across the country. >> we are being targeted politically, we are being targeted with threats and harassment online. sometimes, that spills over into violence. it has to stop. reggie: patrick bowers has been pouring drinks at moby dick bar in the castro district for 28 years. he says it can happen anytime, anywhere. >> until we get our arms around mental health issues and guns in this country, it is going to be

election night. they are separated by about 700 votes. alameda county is closing in on the release of its final ballot count. the next update is set for 5:00 p.m. kumasi: thanksgiving is just a few days away and some of you may be hitting the road. sometimes may be better than others if you are leaving the bay area. lena helen is joining us live with more on when you should leave. this could have you rethinking travel plans, right? lena: that's right. believe it or not, today's least congested day forgetting we need to go by car. according to google maps data from last year, the best time to start your thanksgiving drive is anytime after 8:00 tonight. aaa is predicting 54.6 million people will travel 50 miles or more this thanksgiving holiday. the majority of which will be driving. they say that's 1.5% higher than

2021, making this year the thire year 2000. >> the best time to take the roads is before 8 a.m. and after 8 p.m. you will cp travel times between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. friday, saturday, sunday. wednesday is the absolute peak day for travel at about 42% higher than normal volume. lena: aaa says the worst time to travel by car right here in the bay area's wednesday night, from 4:00 to 5 p.m. on eastbound interstate 80. aaa also encourages drivers to avoid driving tuesday or wednesday right around that 4:00 to 5:00 timeframe. they say that's usually when the thanksgiving peak travel time hits its peak. live in livermore, lena helen,

kumasi: in indonesia, nearly 50 people are dead and over 700 injured after an earthquake rattled the country overnight. the 5.6 magnitude quake hit the west java providence. national disaster agency says hundreds of homes have been damaged or destroyed. right now, rescue crews are trying to find more victims who could be tribally -- beneath the rubble. reggie: open police want you to take a look at this car. they say it was used at a possible kidnapping friday night. witnesses say they saw two women struggling at the intersection of harrison and pull straight -- pearl street. eventually, both women went into the car. investigators believe this was a case of domestic violence, so they are asking the public for help to find this car and the people seem driving off in it. happening today, the two largest railroad units will decide

whether to accept a deal with u.s. freight railroads. a no vote could force congress to stefan, to avoid a rail strike just before the holiday season. if there is a strike, it could happen as early as december 5. several other rail unions have already rejected the latest contract offer. worker say the railroad companies who made more than $1 billion last quarter can afford to give them more. kumasi: information in the death of four college students in idaho paired police have their the victim's remains. no arrests have been made in this case. investigators believe the victims were stabbed to death as they were asleep. at least one victim had defensive wounds, suggesting they fought back. the surviving roommates were sleeping during the attack. one of them call police when they discovered the bodies next morning. kumasi: twitters -- reggie: twitter's headquarters are set to reopen after the close down last week. it comes after a mass resignation. thousands of employees

is this the beginning of a surge or are we about to peak? reggie: in response to this plea for emergency declaration, a spokesperson for health and human services said it is helping communities most in need. kumasi: kaiser nurses will not go on strike today after they reached an agreement with the health care system. it includes 22 .5% raises over the next four years and 2000 additional nurses to address a staffing shortage. kaiser says this agreement demonstrates our agreement -- our commitment to providing excellent market-based compensation and a work environment that supports well-being, safety, and professional opportunities for our nurses. nurses association says, "with this new agreement, we will create a new equity, diversity, and inclusion committee to address systemic racism within the health care community." reggie: a faulty smoke alarm cost entrances to the new

central subway chinatown station to be closed for about one hour yesterday. the san francisco fire department's bonded to the station just after 4 p.m. to reports of smoke in an elevator shaft. ey now think the alarm was set off by dust or a system error. the system was reset and the station reopened an hour later. the central subway just opened to the public saturday. kumasi: elizabeth holmes is expected to appeal her prison sentence in the coming weeks. a judge in san jose sentenced holmes to more than 11 years in an on friday. she was ordered to report to prison in april, but that could be delayed by her appeal. the judge because -- called the ca a cautionarorhoseseo cept hes her business partner at the time will face his own sentencing in the future. reggie: a controversial christmas tree has returned to a nova scotia ball despite protesting it last year. >> 1, 2, 3. [laughter] lisa: good morning, everybody. you need something snuggly this morning. we are looking at the cold numbers out there. temperatures dropping often of the 30's. some higher clouds with us throughout the day. partly cloudy afternoon, mostly sunny for some of you. look at those 30's, from novato at 32, santa rosa at 26 by the delta. 34 in livermore. 31 in san ramon. temperatures in the 30's will drop off probably right at freezing as we have another two hours less than not till sunrise. in the south bay today, you can see high clouds. how about 66 in san jose? peninsula numbers ranging from the mid-60's for most of you. all of those 30's, it is a cold start. 40's to start, then low 60's to finish downtown. in the north bay, you will notice more middle and upper 60's.

the high clouds not doing much to keep temperatures down. we will have lighter winds out there. as high pressure is still in control, we will look at numbers to rebound from 64 in hercules. you had in lynn, more mid-60's. this trough will continue to press overhead. once it departs, we will be looking at higher pressure building and, bringing us the warmest days of the week, which will be wednesday and thursday, taking us above average, getting a little breezy at times. we will look for brighter conditions and a beautiful thanksgiving as we get into friday. looking at a few more clouds. then, hopefully, a little bit of rain by the end of the upcoming weekend. reggie: what is that turkey doing? by 1:00, we are in the 60's, but partly cloudy. filtered sunshine for you. 3:00 in the afternoon, mid-60's. fairly uniform again. very little change. we will see some changes as we get toward wednesday. that busy holiday travel time, we will talk about it coming up. reggie: now we want to get you updated into the investigation at a deadly shooting in colorado springs at five people were killed, 25 others hurt at an plus nightclub called club q. a dj named tara busch has been identified as one of the injured. one of the victims who died has been identified as daniel, a bartender at the club who had recently transitioned. daniel's mother says he left his job and also left performed for people. he was working at the time of the shooting. >> he moved here two years ago. i can't remember when he started at club q, but that was the first job he had.

he loved it. he did good and did what he loved to do, bartending. then, he got to do shows, put on shows. things like that. reggie: the suspected shooter is a 22-year-old who was taken down by two people within the bar. police say he was arrested and charged last year for threatening to hurt his mother. police are investigating this mass shooting as a hate crime. kumasi: that heartbreak is being felt across the lgbtq+ community everywhere. of course, here in the bay area, too. the mass shooting in colorado happened on a day dedicated to those who lost their lives to transphobia crimes. jobina: the suspect opened fire hours before vigils were already planned for transgender remembrance day. adding onto the grave already being felt in the community. in concord, people gathered at a plaza for a vigil yesterday. each light represents someone who has lost their life to

transphobia violence or suicide. during the event, the east bay community called for an end to the violent rhetoric happening right now. they also say for the violence to stop, people need to first educate themselves on the struggles the trains community faces. >> i was with someone last night that was about to go to a nightclub and i love dancing. i think about how often i have to be concerned about who is next to me, who is watching me get out of a vehicle. jobina: across the bay area, people came together to show they stand with the lgbtq+ community. other events were held yesterday at san francisco city hall and in the castro district as well. kumasi: thank you. elected leaders here in the bay area and california were quick to condemn the attack. avner gavin newsom says, "our hearts are with colorado and all of those impacted by this terrible tragedy." also on twitter, one mayor saying, "hate and violence has

no place in san francisco or this country." u.s. congresswoman jackie spears , south san francisco and the peninsula, saying, "the demonization of our lgbtq+ communities has fueled violence for too long. we must come together to send a clear message, hate has no place here." reggie: in the north bay, members of the lgbtq+ community watch "screaming queens" to honor transgender history. >> for somebody to kind of come into that space and commit such a heinous, violent act, it hurts. it's really, really disheartening and awful. reggie: they say there is still a lot of work to be done in the fight for equality. kumasi: we want to honor transgender day of remembrance

by memorializing those killed due to anti-transgender hatred. we have released our latest abc 7 original. the true crime documentary tells the story of a bay area teenager . she was killed 20 years ago, with an impact that lives on today. it focuses on the struggle she faced early in life, her gender transition as a young teen, and the tragic events in october 2002 that led to her death at the hands of several men who discovered she was transgender. it includes police interrogation videos and court evidence not previously seen by the general public. >> she was a typical teenager and we only got to know her for 17 years. >> that is about the most vicious, cold-blooded thing i can think of. >> she tried to escape from the house and was pulled back in. >> i want people to learn from this. >> the media, the public learned about trans lives and train staff.

the case was a moment of change. kumasi: you can watch the documentary on the abc 7 streaming app. reggie: thanksgiving is now just three days away. millions of americans taking to the roads and the skies to get to their loved ones before the holiday. lena howland is live in livermore off of 580, with a look at what holiday travelers need to know. lena: good morning. with thanksgiving now just three days away, travel experts tell us that today is the best day to get where you need to go, if you are traveling by car. aaa is predicting 54.6 million people travel 50 miles or more this thanksgiving holiday. they say that's 1.5% higher than 2021, making this year the third busiest travel season for the thanksgiving holiday since the

year 2000. for those flying to their destinations, flights are more full today than they were pre-pandemic, meaning don't expect to have that empty middle seat next to you anymore. although delays happen, they say don't be too concerned about cancellations and disruptions. >> i am cautiously optimistic that air travel operations have improved and that we are not going to see the same meltdowns that we saw earlier this year, even at the worst of times. still over 97% of flights are operating. the odds are still very much in your favor. lena: for those driving to their turkey day plans, aaa says to try to avoid driving on tuesday or wednesday around 4:00 or 5:00 in the evening, as that is typically when thanksgiving traffic hits its peak. the best time to start your thanksgiving drive is actually today, anytime after 8:00. live in livermore, lena howland,

kumasi: welcome back, everyone. starting this week, changes are coming to san francisco, urging more people to get outside. new markings and signage will be added through the streets program, which was implement it during the pandemic. the changes will give extra space to people who are walking around or on bikes or in wheelchairs. no roads will be closed during the week, but there will be flaggers and some delays for drivers. reggie: residence in san francisco's dogpatch neighborhood are losing their only park for one year. san francisco recreation and parks department are closing it for the first time in 40 years because they are redesigning it. the plan is to make the park more durable and able to withstand increased use.
