nightclub in colorado springs late saturday night. the accused gunman now in custody as police investigate. we have reaction across the bay area and country this morning. we start with jobina with of the heroes and what we are learning about some of the victims. jobina: people are reeling from the mementos lost in their community, a sense of safety within the clear spaces has been challenged once again. one of the victims killed is a trans man named daniel. he was a bartender working saturday night. another victim who survived is dj. police say to people inside the club were heroes when they jumped in to confront the suspect, grabbing his gun and hitting him with it. frantic calls to 911 started rolling in around mid night. >> it was so scary. i heard shots, broken glass, bodies. how? why?

jobina: really tough to hear. vigils are growing this morning outside of club q and across the nation. people at the bar say they had never seen the suspect before. police have not released a motive but they are investigating this as a hate crime. kumasi: thank you. in the wake of this tragic shooting, san francisco's community is coming together in force. gloria rodriguez joining us more. gloria: the bay area waking up to news of the tragic shooting in colorado sunday. it was triggering for many in the lgbtq plus community who have witnessed other shootings targeting them nationally. >> we have together tonight for yet another senseless act of tragedy. ♪

gloria: the san francisco gay men's chorus serenading those gathered in the heart of the district last night, mourning in the wake of the deadly shooting at an lgbtq my club in colorado springs. on the eve of transgender remembrance day. the impact felt right here in the bay area. >> it is not lost on a lot of people that this is the month of the executions of our mayor and harvey milk. connecting the dots to today, we don't see the change that we really wanted. we are saying the -- seeing the bigotry and hatred. gloria: some also gathered on the steps of city hall to honor lives lost. ford was prepared to have a rough day.

data from the government shows more than three quarters of pediatric hospital beds are in use nationwide. the american academy of pediatrics is joining the children's hospital association asking the federal government to declare an emergency. >> we are seeing this early, very high surge of rsv as well as other respiratory illnesses. i think the worry is, we don't know how high the number will climb and is this the beginning of the surge or are we about to peak? reggie: in response to this plea for emergency declaration, a spokesperson said it is currently helping communities most in need. kumasi: elizabeth holmes is expected to appeal her prison sentence in the coming weeks. a judge in san jose sentence her to more than 11 years in prison friday. the judge called the case a cautionary tale for those who refuse to accept responsibility

concord and livermore in the low to mid 30's that cooling taking place mainly right around the bay. a little unusual. 9:00, high clouds. 40's and 50's by 11:00. in the upper 50's, still call out there and partly cloudy. a few mid-60's today. reggie: we want to get you updated on the investigation into a deadly night of shooting in colorado springs. five people were killed, 25 others were hurt at a nightclub called club q. one of the victims has been identified as daniel, a bartender who had recently transitioned. daniel's mother says that he loved his job and also loved to perform for people. he was working at the time of the shooting. >> he moved here two years ago and i care a member when he started at club q, but that was

the first job he had and he loved it. he did what he loved to do, bartending. then he got to do shows, put on shows. things like that. reggie: the shooter is a 22-year-old who was taken down by two people who were inside the bar. police say he had been arrested and charged last year for a bomb threat. police are investigating the mass shooting as a hate crime. kumasi: the heartbreak is being felt across the lgbtq community everywhere including here in the bay area. the mass shooting in colorado happened on a day dedicated to those who have lost their lives due to transphobia crimes. jobina: the suspect opened fire hours before the vigil's were already planned for transgender remembrance day, adding on to the grief already being felt by the community. in concord, people gathered for a vigil yesterday. each light represents someone who has lost their life to transphobia violence or suicide.

the community called for an end to the violent rhetoric. they say for the violence to stop, people need to first educate themselves on the struggles the trans community faces. >> i was someone last night who was about to go to a nightclub and i love dancing. and i think about how often i have to the concerned about who is next to me, who was wanting to get out of the vehicle. jobina: across the bay area, people got together to show that they stand with the lgbtq community. other events were held at san francisco city hall and in the castro district. kumasi: elected leaders in the bay area and california were quick to condemn this attack. governor gavin newsom said, our hearts are with colorado and all of those impacted by this terrible tragedy. and also on twitter, san francisco mayor london breed saying in part, hate and violence has no place in san francisco or this country. u.s. congresswoman jackie spiro

francisco's dogpatch neighborhood are losing their only park. san francisco recreation and parks department is redesigning esprit park for the first time in 40 years. the san francisco chronicle reports the project will start late in december. kumasi: starting this week, changes are coming to the city encouraging people to get outside. the changes will give extra space to people who are walking around or on bikes and wheelchairs. no roads will be closed during the work but there will be some flaggers and some delays for drivers. reggie: a national nonprofit is expanding its region and incorporate books into pediatric care. gloria rodriguez is in the newsroom to explain this one.
