getting ready for thanksgiving just three days away. parts of new york though still digging out after massive snowstorms. some areas getting hit with 6 feet. going to have much more on that deep freeze in just a moment. george? first, the deadly shooting at the lgbtq club in colorado springs. 5 people were killed, 25 more wounded. the shooter is in custody. the gunman was taken down by people inside the club. we'll hear from the mayor of colorado springs in just a moment. first, chief national correspondent matt gutman is live on the scene with the latest. good morning, matt. >> reporter: good morning, george. as we learn more about the horror inside that club, we're also learning more about the heros, two patrons who officials say charged that suspect. one of them grabbing his handgun, pummeling the suspect with it. then they pinned him to the ground. that's where he was when police arrived and officials say that those two patrons saved lives. this morning, authorities in colorado urgently investigating that deadly shooting at the lgbtq nightclub over the weekend. >> reports of ten people shot. let's make this a mass casualty. >> reporter: it was a mass

casualty event leaving five dead, dozens wounded. >> i was bartending, making drinks and then i heard like a pop, pop, pop. once i looked up and i saw the shadow of a grown man wielding a rifle. >> reporter: those 911 calls pouring in. at 11:57 p.m. within seconds of those first calls, colorado springs police dispatching officers. by midnight the first officer arriving at the scene and by 12:02 a.m., five minutes after that firt call, the suspect in custody. authorities say the suspect was armed with an assault rifle and another gun, and he carried multiple magazines of ammunition. >> glass started shattering all around me. >> reporter: the city's police chief telling me two patrons charged the shooter. >> they risked their lives. >> they absolutely risked their lives. >> heroes. >> right. >> there's no other word that are. >> absolutely. >> reporter: police say the suspect, 22-year-old anderson lee aldrich burst into the club after it hosted a drag show that night. law enforcement now

investigating the massacre as a hate crime. club q known by many here as a safe haven that has served the lgbtq members of this community for two decades. the owners said the gunman was a stranger to them. >> he's never spent money on a credit card or i.d. ever scanned in our business that we know of. i think this was a community of target for him. >> reporter: he may not have been known to the club, but he was known to law enforcement. the suspect arrested last june following an alleged bomb threat incident against his mother. among the five confirmed dead was club q's own daniel david as astin. he recently moved to colorado and became a bartender. his mother said of him, he was our baby. at least two victims remain in critical condition this morning including mark's sister. >> lot of trauma. >> reporter: his younger brother also shot. >> it's a nightmare come true. >> reporter: the survivors at that club wondering if club q

can ever be a safe haven for them. investigators and officials are trying to understand what the motive was here, how long this was planned for. the police chief telling me they have dozens of interviews to kubt and i am told that the suspect could be in court today for his first appearance. t.j.? >> all right, matt thank you. joining us now is the mayor of colorado springs, john suthers. mr. mayor, thank you so much for being here. i know it's been a trying weekend for you all. we appreciate the time. can you tell us if you have a better indication of what the motive might have been for this shooting? >> the motive is still under investigation. it has the trappings of a hate crime but we'll have to see what the investigation shows in terms of social media and things like that, to make a clear determination exactly what the motive was. >> just how armed was this suspect? we have an indication of two

weapons i believe. but also how much ammo did he have going in? >> i'm not sure that's a matter of public information at this point in time, but he had considerable ammo. i don't think the precise nature the police have commented on at this point in time, but he was extremely well armed. >> and we're talking about just this arrest back in 2021 of this suspect and you all have a red fla flag law. from what you can tell, after this arrest, should this suspect be allowed to possess weapons? >> we're going to find out in the next couple days it's colorado law that prevents law enforcement at this point in time from commenting on any prior criminal activity. but i think the district attorney will go to court today and we'll be able to comment on any prior interaction with the police fairly quickly, hopefully in the next couple of days. >> mr. mayor, just how much can you say about the reports of those two heroes inside?

one who took one of the guns and actually struck the suspect and another who helped subdue him as well? had it not been for those who, how much worse could this have been? >> the police were there within three minutes after dispatch. the dispatch at 11:57. the police arrive at 12:00. this incident is over by 12:02 largely because of the hero -- heroic actions of people in the bar who took a weapon, used that weapon to disable this individual. you know, if this had gone on for several minutes more, and that heroic action had not been taken, i can only imagine how many more fatalities we might have had. they clearly saved lives, and it's -- it's incredibly heroic and courageous action on their part. >> what do you say now to assure the community of safety moving

forward when something like this happens? >> the groundswell of support in the community is amazing. there's been a number of vigils already. there will be more today. this community will rally, as it has been in regard to incidents of this nature. we're going to show this is very welcoming community and as i say the actions of this single individual whatever his motivations don't reflect the city of colorado springs. >> mr. mayor, thank you for your time. i know a lot of healing has to take place in that community now, but we appreciate you updating our viewers. thank you so much. >> thank you, t.j. >> just thinking of all impacted by that tragedy. >> just the horror. again, i've been here with y'all on a lot of mondays and we start again just like this. >> all right, gentlemen.

we turn to the historic snowstorm and brutal cold coast to coast this morning. parts of new york struggling to dig out after more than 6 feet of snow fell in some areas. matt rivers is in buffalo after riding out the storm there this weekend. good morning, matt. >> reporter: good morning, robin. president biden declaring a state of disaster here in western new york. 80 inches on the ground where i am in orchard park, and you can see behind me a mini mountain of snow being created by crews dropping off snow that they're picking up from streets. bulldozers piling it up 30 feet behind me. the storm now responsible for three deaths in the community. members of the national guard have been activated and with wind chills down in the single digits, 50 mile an hour winds, the severe weather threat. over the weekend the buffalo bills were set to play a home game here in western new york, and that game ended up getting moved to detroit. just to get the players to the -- to the plane, they had to get dug out by members of the community. it's a good example of members of the community doing what they can to support their team, cheering them on and also digging them out. robin? >> very supportive community. matt, thank you. ginger tracking the latest on the snow and the near record

cold sweeping across the country. good morning, ginger. >> good morning to you, robin. it's like insult to the injury when you have got snow above your head and now you add a 50-mile-per-hour gust with wind advisories from jamestown to watertown. some pictures out of oswego too because it wasn't just the buffalo area. west michigan, 131 a very popular highway that gets shut down by lake effect. that was a 20-car pileup. look at those totals. nothing to sneeze at in east grand rapids, national bridge, new york, 72. orchard park coming away as the winner there at 80 inches, if you call that a winner. the cold that settles in goes from a windchill feeling like 39 in bakersfield to 39 in new orleans and charleston. sub-40-degree windchills. then you get single digits and teens. things warm up. i've got some news coming, george. >> we'll take it. ginger, thanks very much. now to breaking news overnight. a powerful earthquake killed at least 46 people in indonesia.

about 700 injured. maggie rulli has the latest. good morning, maggie. >> reporter: good morning, george. with hundreds more injured, officials are expecting that death toll to rise. right now, rescuers are desperately trying to get to survivors where in some places buildings have been completely level. the 5.6 earthquake hit an island called java. that's a densely populated area. dozens of buildings were damaged including a boarding school and a hospital. the tremors could be felt in the busy capital of jakarta where offices and other tall buildings swayed back and forth. many had to be evacuated and officials are saying the danger there is not yet over. while there's no tsunami warning, they are warning of possible aftershocks. george? >> okay, maggie, thanks very much. to politics now and the marathon race for the white house, already heating up as potential rivals jockey to take on donald trump at a gop event

in nevada this weekend. congressional correspondent achel scott is in las vegas. good morning, rachel. >> reporter: george, good morning. the battle for the republican nomination already taking stay shape just days after former president donald trump announced his third run for the white house. several republicans who could challenge him in 2024 gathered here in las vegas and made it clear that the party must head in a new direction, especially after a disappointing midterm. trump's former u.n. ambassador nikki haley called it a wake-up call. governor of new hampshire chris sununu said the party most stop supporting crazy, unelectable candidates. mike pence with the words that he believes that the party and voters will have better choices than trump in 2024. of course, the former president launching his campaign under the shadow of a special counsel overseeing two criminal investigations into the former president. then this weekend, trump's biggest megaphone restored. twitter's ceo elon musk reinstating the former president's twitter account

at the time of the attack. kayna whitworth is in moscow, idaho, with more. good morning, kayna. >> reporter: good morning, robin. so authorities telling me the two surviving asleep, but that they were in the basement and they woke up to what they thought was a passed out roommate, initially calling friends over who discovered something much more sinister. this morning, police in moscow, idaho revealing for the first time that before a 911 call was made, the two surviving roommates of a deadly rampage that killed four students summoned friends to the off-campus home telling authorities, they thought someone on the second floor had, quote, passed out and was not waking up. >> what i do know is they woke up later in the morning. they recognized that something was amiss. they believed the roommate wouldn't wake up. they called some friends.

the friends came over. they called 911 and that's when the officers arrived. >> reporter: police say multiple people spoke with the 911 dispatcher before an officer arrived. >> you have victims with multiple stab wounds. how does that translate to my roommate's passed out and won't wake up? >> so, i haven't seen the scene and i'm not sure what they saw in the morning. what we believe we know is that when they woke up they believed that the roommate was still passed out, wasn't responding -- >> wasn't responding to what? >> i'm not sure. >> reporter: detectives do not believe anyone at the scene was involved in the crime. this tiktok showing all of the roommates together just weeks before. the survivors' faces blurred because police haven't released their identities yet. as the search for the killer intensifies, authorities say they're targeting certain neighborhoods looking for surveillance video and any new evidence. >> we're looking everywhere. >> reporter: frantic for answers, kernodle's brother

going door to door with flyers asking neighbors to search their property. >> this is a horrible thing that's happened and somebody needs to be brought to justice. >> reporter: meanwhile, concalves sister pouring over phone records saying kaylee made several phone calls to her longtime boyfriend the night she was called. the calls went unanswered. >> i know for a fact that he's not a suspect. he's not suspicious. he is 100% innocent in this. >> reporter: and this morning, police confirming he's not a suspect, but they're still asking this tight-knit community for information. right now authorities have conducted 90 interviews and are chasing over 700 leads. all of this is happening, robin, as ethan's family is laying him to rest today. >> all right. kayna, thank you so much. we'll bring in abc news contributor, former fbi agent brad garrett. brad, we heard in kayna's report, two victims were on the second floor, two on the third

floor, all four now believed to have been asleep at the time. the two roommates that were in the house in the basement. what does all this tell you, brad? >> so it tells me that someone came into the house with a comfort level, that they probably knew the layout of the house. i tell you, this new information, robin, really sort of changes my analysis or profile of maybe who did this and the reason why is if you have basically four people killed on two different floors and the roommates go up and really don't realize they've been stabbed, does that mean that the killer has actually staged to cover them up in such a way they didn't see the blood? so as a result, is this a person maybe a little older? think about how much time it would take to go to four different people and to kill them in the manner in which they were killed. so what bothers me is the circle of people that may have

committed this, you may have to make bigger. you obviously look for people close to the victims initially, and that's absolutely correct. but my sense might be that this is somebody that's not really in their inner circle. we'll have to see. >> you're shifting your analysis. do you think even though the police have stressed this is ongoing and going to take some time, how are they shifting the investigation based on this new information? >> i'd hope they're shifting it to looking at -- moving beyond immediate contacts, in other words other college students basically, boyfriends, girlfriends, et cetera. who else do they have relations with? people, adults on campus, people in the community because you're going to have to start spreading out to people they may have a casual relationship. this person didn't just show up in this house and commit this act. he went there to do specifically what he had done.

it's so clear to me that he really knew what he was doing, just based on the time alone as i mentioned to you earlier. >> brad garrett, thank you. we'll be checking back with you from time to time. hopefully they do have some solid leads because the family of those four victims, can only imagine what they're going through. george? >> it's so horrible, robin. now to a new warning about the scam promising people work from home opportunities cost one woman nearly $5,000. rebecca jarvis has the details. >> i just felt absolutely and completely powerless. i -- i was devastated. >> reporter: for kansas city resident miranda owens, a simple job search turned into a financial nightmare. >> i was really banking on finding a job because i had looked through hundreds of different job listings at that point. >> reporter: the 24-year-old says she was scammed out of nearly $5,000 after answering an inquiry for a remote position saying that within moments of the interview she was hired.

>> at the end of the interview she told me basically you did really well during the interview. we think you'd be a very good candidate for us. you're hired. >> reporter: miranda says she did her research, looking up the company and employees through employment networks. everything seemed to check out. >> i looked them up. i looked up the people who contacted me so i felt reassured. >> reporter: miranda said the would-be employer quickly sent a check to be used for office supplies and then requested the money be sent back. miranda sent the payment in bitcoin. she says only later did her bank notify her that the original check from the supposed employer turned out to be fraudulent. the bank pulled that amount out of her account leaving her short of almost $5,000. >> i just started bawling. i felt like my trust had been

>> i looked up and i saw the shadow of a grown man wielding a rifle. >> reporter: 911 calls pouring in. at 11:57 p.m. within seconds of those first calls, colorado springs police dispatching officers. by midnight the first officer arrive at the scene and 12:02 a.m., five minutes after that first call, the suspect in custody. authorities say the suspect was armed with an assault rifle and another gun and he carried multiple magazines of ammunition. >> he sustained some injuries. two patrons inside the club intervened and stopped him from continuing to shoot. my understanding that's where those skrirs stemmed from, those two individuals, who acting heroically. >> reporter: police say the suspect 22-year-old anderson lee aldrich burst into club q just after it had hosted a drag show that night. law enforcement is now investigating the massacre as a hate crime. club q known by many here as a safe haven that had served this
