saved thousands of lives says he is no hero. he is an army veteran who says his training kicked in. richard vieira was at club q with his wife, daughter, and friend when the shooting began. that is when he jumped into action, grabbing his pistol away while instructing other people to grab the shooter's other weapon. he said one drag queen pummeled the shooter with her heels. while he likely saved many lives, his daughter's boyfriend, brandon vance, was one of those killed. >> there were five people i could not help, one of which was family to me. i'm not excited. that guy is still alive and my family is not. jobina: the 22-year-old suspect faces murder and hate crime charges. this video shows his arrest last year when he was accused of making bomb threats toward his mother. case was dismissed because his

family refused to cooperate. the suspect was due in court yesterday, but the da says his injuries were so significant he had to stay in the hospital. reggie: people who live and work in san francisco's castro district are struggling to process that attack. we spoke with customers and owners of a number of castro businesses about the incident. for those who run the bars and nightclubs in the area of the colorado springs attack it's close to home. chris hastings is owner of the lookout, where he says security guards are on duty seven nights a week. >> i don't know what else we could do beyond what we are already doing. because this is not the first time this happened. threats like this are something that we hope we never have to deal with directly, but anticipate. reggie: hastings says his staff has been doing active shooter training since the polls nightclub shooting six years ago. kumasi: there is this scene at the historic castro theatre, the

this morning health officials want to remind you that rsv is it and hospital beds are filling up. luz pena explains what this means now that the holiday season is here. reporter: hospitals across the country are reporting the impact of multiple respiratory viruses hitting the population at the same time. covert, influenza, and rsv are responsible for driving a winter surge that could stress the medical system. >> if you feel like you are coming down with a respiratory infection the most important thing to do is isolate. luz: dr. gabriel ortiz has seen the impacts of these viruses. ahead of the holiday season he is urging the public to vaccinate against the flu and get a covert rooster. -- a covid rooster. >> these viruses are circulating right now. the symptoms are similar to each other, so it can be hard to tell apart. luz: there is no vaccine for

rsv. california is seeing more rsp cases sooner in the season than in 2018, 2019, 2020 20, and 2021. >> we know rsv differs from season to season, and therefore there is differential levels of severity according to season. we have not been able to predict the levels of severity from one season to another. luz: the chief of pediatric pulmonary medicine at children's hospital at stanford, dr. david kornfield, believes more children are getting rsv because they were less exposed to it over the past few years. >> makes sense that when there are so many kids who have not seen the virus at all, how many of them are being infected for the first time, there will be a relatively more infected. luz: both dr. kornfield and dr. ortiz recommend to go back to the basics to keep your family protected this holiday season. >> if you are on a plane i

the rubble. that is threatening the area right now. the indonesian president spent monday visiting the areas affected. reggie: police are looking for the attempted carjackers who won after a one at a gas station in san francisco's mission district. the whole thing was caught on video. you see a pickup truck pull up to a gas station along cesar on saturday. a man gets out and approaches this white mercedes, and moments later a second camera shows the man's struggle with a woman for her purse. when she did not let go, another man got out of that truck and hit her. they were not able to steal the car because they could not started. >> you see it all day. i mean, from small stuff of people getting out of their cars quick to get gas and running back, someone's hand is in their window. it is bad out here now. reggie: one expert does not recommend fighting back. he suggests eating gas when there are other people around --

although it does look like there were other people around. kumasi: a 35 euro man is in the hospital after being stabbed in what is being called a random attack. the stabbing happened around 11:20 yesterday morning on lakeshore avenue in oakland. investigators told the times the victim was sitting, drinking coffee when a man stabbed him in the neck. the two did not know each other, apparently. the suspect was arrested a few blocks away and is now undergoing a psychiatric evaluation. reggie: drivers are under arrest following the deadly crash in redwood city that left twin sisters without their parents. police say the 17 and 23-year-old drivers were racing. grace and greg ament died when another car hit there's near finger avenue on november 4. they're twins were also in the car. they survived. investigators say the driver of the car that hit them is only

17. police arrested him on friday. the 23-year-old man he was racing was taken into custody yesterday. both now phase two counts of -- face two counts of murder. kumasi: velasquez has pleaded not guilty to assault and weapons charges in santa clara county. he is charged with shooting at a man accused of sexually abusing his son. now he is asking the court for permission to travel to arizona next weekend to participate in a wrestling event. a judge has not ruled on that request. reggie: commercial crab season has been delayed again after dozens of humpback whales were spotted off the coast. postponing crab season will protect whales from becoming entangled in traps. commercial crab season has been delayed in recent years because climate change has also changed the home pac-12 migration patterns, putting them in fishing zones into the late fall. officials will reevaluate the

too late to get your booster or flu shot before thanksgiving. the benefits of these vaccines begin to appear in a couple of days. the update from santa clara officials -- abc 7 news. reggie: this morning we are closer to a rail worker strike that threatens to cripple the u.s. economy. the two largest freight rail unions have rejected the latest contract offer. that could push back recovery in supply chains more. jobina: a strike would cost the economy about $2 billion a day. both unions could not agree on a contract, brokered by the biden administration monday. a union representative rejected the proposal. the vote puts more pressure on congress to step in and avoid a stoppage that could hinder coal shipments, shut down passenger rail, and put drinking water at risk. the transportation coalition says a strike will hurt farmers

because of the low water levels in the mississippi river impacting barge traffic. >> a lot of farmers and agricultural strippers are looking for lifelines, because the river is not operating as it normally does. rail is the preferred option, because rail is very well designed to transport heavy commodities long distances as well. aludden h big question mark. jobina: experts say even a short strike could cause delays and congestion, as nearly 30% of u.s. freight is moved by rail. if a deal is not reached soon the stoppage could begin as soon december 5. kumasi: some families in need in the north bay will not have to worry about getting a thanksgiving meal. family outreach in san rafael just held its free annual holiday giveaway. the typical holiday meal is out of reach for many this season.

the staff is saying about 65% of its clients are housed, many are living paycheck-to-paycheck. >> some of our clients are having to make the choice between buying food and paying rent. with the cost of things going up extremely this year, our ability to provide a thanksgiving meal is very meaningful for many of our families. kumasi: volunteers say they have reggie: question -- with inflation at an all-time high, thanksgiving could cost you 20% or than it did last two. abc 7 news visited safeway in san rafael. most things were, no surprise, more expensive, including turkey, milk, celery, carrots, frozen peas, cranberries, heavy whipping cream, pie shells, and pumpkin pie mix.

but some things were actually less than the average in the u.s., including dinner rolls, sweet potatoes, and boxed stuffing. that is your favorite.
