express when we travel. >> it was a big night and we needed to get them here to times square so that we could have an exciting morning with the dance champs and all the finalists. >> that's coming up. also, millions of americans are getting ready for a thanksgiving getaway. gio benitez is going to break down what you need to know for the holiday travel. we begin with the latest on the shooting at the lgbtq club at colorado springs that left five people dead and we're hearing from the army veteran who helped take him down. our chief national correspondent matt gutman is on the scene for us. good morning, matt. >> reporter: good morning, robin, you mentioned that hero. his name is richard fierro, combat vet, four tours in iraq and afghanistan. he said his training kicked in. he actually got the suspect from behind, yanking him down, then he began to pummel him, all the while yelling instruction to other patrons to get the gun away, call 911. he said in that moment instinct told him it was kill or be killed. overnight, the man police have called a hero speaking to

reporters. >> i wasn't thinking. i just ran over there, got him. i've got to kill this guy. he's going to kill my kid. he's going to kill my wife. >> reporter: the decorated 14-year army veteran credited with saving dozens of lives during the nightclub massacre in colorado springs, now describing the moment he took the gunman down. >> i grabbed him by the back of his little [ bleep ] and pulled him down. i grabbed the pistol from him and i'm on top of him. i'm a big dude, man, and this guy was bigger. i just kept wailing on him. he's trying to get his ammo and guns. >> reporter: fierro, along with his wife and daughter, were at the club supporting a friend. they survived but his daughter's boyfriend, raymond green vance, was among the five killed. 19 others were wounded. >> there are five people that i could not help and one of which was family to me. >> reporter: 22-year-old anderson lee aldrich was arrested on ten preliminary charges that included five counts of first-degree murder and hate crimes.

>> typically there will be more charges in a case like this when we do formal charging. >> reporter: this ring camera footage showing him surrendering to police in 2021 after allegedly making a bomb threat against his mother. those charges were later dropped. his record sealed. and that, authorities say, is what allowed him to legally purchase that ar-style rifle, which he would allegedly use to murder ashley paugh, daniel aston, raymond green vance, along with kelly loving. her sister says she was always fighting for people. and derrick rump, his mother telling us her son had a heart of gold. the rifle's bullets also striking patrons like ed sanders. >> i got hit in the back and it felt crunchy, like a mini explosion. and i turned around and looked at the guy and then i noticed that he had a gun and he was shooting. >> reporter: sanders shot again in the leg.

and kelly loving, fatally wounded, both of them falling on top of drag queen wyatt kent. >> i stuck out my hand out and i grabbed her hand and said, keep squeezing my hand, baby. >> reporter: kent believes the two of them shielding him. >> i'm so thankful to them. >> because she saved your life? >> i'm alive because of her. >> reporter: but this morning the survivors grateful and defiant. >> i'm not going to be afraid or intimidated. >> reporter: sanders telling me when club q opens back up, he'll be the first patron in that door. some of the survivors and the hero saying they're looking forward to seeing that suspect in court, to staring him down. the suspect remains hospitalized with injuries i'm told described as significant. robin? >> matt, thanks so much. george? now to the looming freight rail strike that could impact holiday travel plans. the union has rejected the deal

and the strike could have a ripple effect across the economy, including delays in shipping christmas gifts. rebecca jarvis is in chicago tracking it all. good morning, rebecca. >> reporter: good morning, george. $2 billion a day in economic losses, that is the forecast of what could this strike cause the economy, which is why the white house is calling this unacceptable, saying they are working to broker a deal, but also preparing for all possible outcomes. here's the importance of rail and transport in our economy. the railway systems transit all the agricultural products throughout the country. without them working and operating, that means major supply chain disruptions. it comes at a time just before the holidays where the system would have to rely much more heavily on truckers and trucking to transport things like holiday gifts. there are not enough truckers to make up for that deficit and that is why it would have a

major ripple effect on the economy. we have some deadlines coming up. december 5th is the next deadline. a number of the unions have zb agreed to a deal. there's another vote coming up. if they don't pass that, they strike. george? >> we'll keep an eye on it. okay, rebecca, thanks very much. michael? we're going to turn now to rescue operations under way in indonesia after a devastating earthquake left at least 260 people dead and more than 1,000 injured. our chief foreign correspondent, ian pannell, has the latest for us. ian, officials fear the death toll could rise significantly. >> reporter: yeah, that's right. good morning, michael. hundred are dead, as you say, more than 1,000 injured. tens of thousands of people have been displaced and that's why officials fear those numbers could get even worse. even now rescue efforts are ongoing and it's feared that many of the dead could be public school students who were at school at the time when buildings started to collapse. that's according to local officials. there are also reports that

hospitals in the region have been overwhelmed with patients. apparently some of them are even forced to lie in tents outside awaiting further treatment. thousands of people of course spent the night outside, many of them fearing that there could be aftershocks. aid has started to arrive in the area, though, including food, tents, blankets and other supplies. the 5.6 magnitude earthquake hit monday on indonesia's main island of java. one of the reasons it's been so devastating is that it was relatively shallow and in many cases the local infrastructure just isn't strong enough to withstand the kind of earthquakes that happen in this area. michael? >> ian pannell, thank you so much. robin? michael, we're going to turn to some 55 million people getting ready to travel for thanksgiving. aaa is predicting it's nearing pre-pandemic levels. our transportation correspondent gio benitez is at laguardia airport with what passengers can expect. good morning, gio. >> reporter: hey, robin, good morning. you can see at laguardia it is very, very busy. the faa believes today will be

the busiest day to fly before thanksgiving, about 48,000 flights taking off. let's look at the numbers right now, because aaa tells us that about 4.5 million americans will fly to their thanksgiving destinations. as you can imagine, air travel is up by nearly 8% over last year. also up, though, the cost of flying. hopper telling us most travelers will pay about 350 bucks for a good deal domestically. and, get this, airfares will be 43% higher than last year. the busiest destinations, major american cities like new york, orlando and los angeles. airports in houston, chicago and denver will also be very busy, especially on sunday. all of the major airlines tell us that will be the busiest day, going back home. why don't we go ahead and talk about last-minute pro tips from our friends at aaa. if you're parking at the airport, go ahead and reserve that parking in advance. and you see what i have here, this is that carry-on size luggage. try to avoid checked luggage,

because if you have any last-minute cancellations or delays, you can have it all right there with you. >> i love how you did the twirl. very nice, gio. thank you. now we go to the roads, expected to be jammed with holiday travelers. trevor ault is in fort lee, new jersey, with more. good morning, trevor. >> reporter: good morning, robin. if you're traveling this thanksgiving, you're almost certainly driving. that's the case for 49 million people. that's more than there was last year. just down a little bit from 2019. the good news for drivers, when you fill up the tank ahead of thanksgiving, gas prices are falling. according to aaa, they've dropped about 12 cents a gallon on average just in the past week. it's now at about $3.63 on average nationwide. it's getting lower. it's still the highest it has ever been thanksgiving week, since aaa started tracking since the turn of the century. of course there's going to be traffic. let's talk about when to drive.

new england, but overall it's really a good start to the weekend. look at alabama into sunday, buffalo to new york, that's when we may see impacts on the roads and in the air, sunday. guys? >> thank you, ginger. now to the delphi murder case. the man accused of killing two teenage girls in 2017 is due in court this morning. a judge ordering 50-year-old richard allen, who was arrested just last month, to appear in person. alex perez is in delphi, indiana, with the latest. good morning, alex. >> reporter: good morning, michael. today could be the day the public finally learns more about what led police to suspect richard allen and why they charged him with the murders of abby and libby. now 50-year-old richard allen was arrested last month and charged with killing 13-year-old abby williams and 14-year-old libby german. at the time of the rest prosecutors asked to have court documents sealed. it remains a mystery what evidence led police to arrest allen. today the judge has asked allen to appear in person for a

hearing to determine if some of those documents could be made public. investigators had been hunting for the girls' killers since february of 2017 when their from the hiking trail where they were last seen. authorities had previously released this image of a suspect they say was found on libby's phone. for nearly six years police sought the public's health and sifted through more than 70,000 tips. allen's arrest, the first big break in the case. the prosecutor argued in the past that keeping these documents sealed was integral to the investigation. allen has a court date set for march of next year. michael? >> thank you, alex. george? we're going to get an update now on jay leno, discharged from pa california hospital after a week after being severely burned in a garage fire. the first public photos since the accident reveals significant scarring. our newest correspondent is in los angeles with the story. good morning, demarco. >> reporter: george, good morning to you.

jay leno was out of the hospital and on the road to recovery after suffering significant second and third-degree burns. for the first time, we're taking a look at those scars and a picture taken at the time of his release. this morning, jay leno was all smiles in this newly-released photo, the first image of the star following the devastating car fire, standing with medical staff after being released from the burn center. the second and third-degree burn wounds he sustained to his face, chest and hands visible to the eye. dr. grossman wrote in a statement overnight, i am pleased with jay's progress and i am optimistic that he will make a full recovery. the 72-year-old comedian hospitalized for ten days after a flash gasoline fire left him with deep third-degree burns. the former "tonight show" host undergoing at least two surgical grafting procedures. his next step to recovery will include follow-up care at the grossman outpatient facility. >> he definitely has serious injuries. there are potential for scarring and a potential for some dysfunction in some of the areas that he's injured in.

kayna whitworth is in moscow, idaho with more details. good morning, kayna. >> reporter: robin, good morning. more and more we're hearing from people in town they're on edge. police are encouraging people to report anything suspicious or just plain out of the ordinary as they try to put the pieces together. detectives were back out at the home yesterday walking the crime scene. they say the dynamics and layout of the home are crucial to their investigation. this morning, growing fears as authorities chase down leads in the desperate search for the killer who murdered four college students at the university of idaho. >> detectives are actively working this case and so we're moving forward. >> reporter: the community on edge, but with more information detectives revisiting the crime scene, piecing together potential clues. >> as time is going by, it's feeling a little uncertain and the more news reports that come out, just i'm being cautious and keeping an eye on where i'm going and what i'm doing. >> reporter: overnight, ethan

chapin, the oldest of triplets, the first victim to be memorialized. his mother emotional as she spoke about her son. >> we're here to honor the life and legacy of our son and brother, ethan chapin, one of the most incredible people you'll ever know. >> reporter: his family, grateful for the support from loved ones and strangers. >> your outreach and kind words are ofr: as the mystery deepens, authorities revealing two surviving roommates arrived home that night before the victims and were likely sleeping at the time of the attack. >> what i can say is that the roommates who survived, they were in the basement throughout the night. >> reporter: they awakened several hours later, summoning friends when one of their roommates was unresponsive. officers arriving on scene, locating the victims, and this morning saying kaylee gonsalves' dog was also found unharmed at the home. that dog seen in this tiktok video taken just weeks ago

showing the girls inside the house. >> there's no forced entry and there's no dog barking. do we think it was someone that they knew? >> we don't know if the dog was barking or not. that's part of the ongoing investigation, to figure out kind of what occurred. it would be difficult to speculate whether or not it was a known suspect or a total stranger. >> reporter: the coroner revealing that while kaylee, madison mogen, shannon kernodle and chapin were likely asleep at the time of the attack, there was evidence of defensive wounds. dna samples are being tested by the state lab now. evidence shows the students may have been targeted, but investigators are not elaborating. authorities have not narrowed downey specific detail or motive. they said they've searched the dumpsters around the home and found nothing. they'll continue to pursue any leads, robin, because they're doing everything they can to get these families justice.

"gma" about how much more thanksgiving is going to cost this year with inflation. when it comes to food prices, what categories do you see going up? >> well, when you look, it's pretty broad based, but if you look at the main part of the meal, turkeys, our turkey costs are up about 20%. but we decided early on to not pass that cost increase through to try to help somebody stretch their budget. so, you know, it's a fine balance and we're going to do everything we can to help somebody stretch that budget all they can. >> and when some things go up, other things go down, so what categories are going down? >> well, if you look at right now chicken and some of those items, they're starting to come down. beef is still inflationary, pork is still a little bit inflationary. some of the produce items are starting to come down just a little bit. so it's just the beginning, but, you know, you still can always -- when you look at our

brands, some people call it private label, people can switch to that and help stretch their budget as well. >> ands g y kw, full throttle into the holidays, what are the expected trends for prices through the end of the year? >> if you look, we are starting to cycle inflation from last year, so it's starting to slow down a little bit. and, you know, our hope and expectation is as we get early into next year, we'll see that continue, decrease a little bit, in terms of that's what we anticipate at the moment. >> and you're right there on the front lines. how do you see people adjusting their shopping habits and what trends are you seeing? >> well, the biggest thing we're seeing is people continue to eat and cook at home. one of the things, during covid people learned to cook at home and what they found is they enjoy it. they love eating as a family. what people are continuing to do is just really continue doing that and it also helps stretch

down what you need to know about traveling for thanksgiving. right now on the colorado shooting investigation. we're hearing from the veteran who took down the shooter. we want to go back to our correspondent matt gutman in colorado springs. >> reporter: that hero's name is richard fierro. four combat tours in iraq and afghanistan and he said his training kicked in. he actually got the suspect from behind, and began pummelling him, shouting instructions to patrons, move the gun away, call 911. he said he thought he was done with war, but he had one more battle. overnight, the man police have called a hero speaking to reporters. >> i wasn't thinking. i just ran over there, got him. i've got to kill this guy, he's going to kill my kid, he's going to kill my wife. >> reporter: the decorated 14-year army veteran credited with saving dozens of lives during the nightclub massacre in colorado springs, now describing the moment he took the gunman down. >> i grabbed him by the back of his little [ bleep ] armor thing

and i pulled him down. i grabbed the pistol from him. >> reporter: fierro, along with his wife and daughter were at the club supporting a friend. they survived but his daughter's boyfriend, raymond green vance, was among the five killed. 19 others were wounded. 22-year-old anderson lee aldrich was arrested on charges including five counts of first-degree murder and hate crimes. this ring camera footage showing him surrendering to police in 2021, after allegedly making a bomb threat against his mother. those charges were later dropped. his record sealed. and that, authorities say, is what allowed him to legally purchase that ar-style rifle, which he would allegedly use to murder ashley paugh, daniel aston, raymond green vance, along with kelly loving. this morning, survivors grateful and defiant. >> i'm not going to be afraid or intimidated. it's a family.

out, i was obviously shocked and it was scary and it felt really eerie because it was so similar to my dads. nearly 54,000 are diagnosed with oral cancer each year. danner now raising awareness through advocacy. the grandmother of four hopeful for the future. i think we've all become somehow stronger. it's a bit of a crapshoot, this disease and the life. but i've had a career, great kids, and a loving husband. i'm very grateful. and gwyneth saying that her mom battled cancer with grace and strength, danner now making the most of every moment and surrounding herself with her family she adores. >> we wish her the best. thank you, erielle. >> we really do. we have a story that reflect the true meaning of thanksgiving, giving thanks. as you know, my father was a proud member of the tuskegee airmen. their service was often lost to history. i've got to tell you, the troops of world war ii whose lives were protected by that group of airmen will never forget them. and one of those soldiers, television icon norman lear, reached out to us eager to express his appreciation.

iconic sitcoms, "sanford & son", "good times" and "the jeffersons". >> how important it was for him to tell this story. >> tyler perry gave me a call, he recently saw norman lear, norman asked, was there any way i could be connected with the tuskegee airmen to thank them. because, as he said, the reason they were called the red tails, their tails of the planes were painted red so you knew who they were. and you've heard from people like norman lear and others who were there, who said when they saw the red tails, they exhaled because they had an exemplary flying record, and it's so important because my father was a tuskegee airman and it was only later in life that i even realized. i was never taught that in school. it's so important just to know the history. >> and your father had that nice honor last week as well. >> oh, gosh, he did. the naming of the road leading to newark airport, the new terminal that is going to open officially december 9th, which will be my dad's 100th birthday. >> that's fantastic.
