dan: breaking news as we come on the air. it happened again. another mass shooting in america. multiple people killed at a walmart in virginia. it appears an employee turns a gun on his coworkers tonight. that evening. ama: right now, we know multiple people are dead and several other injured after authorities say a shooting happened inside the store. law enforcement sources tell abc news, the alleged shooter was an employee, possibly even a store manager. witnesses say that person went into the break room and shot other employees. >> we believe it was a single shooter. we believe that shooter is deceased at this time. ama: the shooter took their own life.

investigators haven't released the exact number of victims. walmart is closed and crews will be on the scene throughout the night combing the store for evidence. dan: this comes days after five people were killed at the club q nightclub in colorado springs. the suspect anderson aldrich is in jail after he was released from the hospital today. the 22-year-old was severely beaten after police say they opened fire on the patrons inside the lgbtq venue. aldrich faces five counts of first-degree murder and five hate crime charges. recently released court filings from his public defender, the suspect is non-binary and uses they/them pronouns. ama: new data shows unprecedented threats and attacks against lgbtq+ americans leading up to the colorado springs shooting. all poll by glad finds 72% of transgender people say they fear for their safety in the current political environment. 48% of the overall l2 bq

j.r. stone caught up with some drivers making their thanksgiving trek. reporter: this section of interstate 80 near berkeley is expected to be one of the busiest traveled roads in the country on wednesday afternoon. the day before thanksgiving. >> specifically tried to get out before that. reporter: i-80 from the east bay to san pablo road will likely see an 80% increase from typical traffic from 4:00 to 5:00 wednesday according to aaa. >> i had classes yesterday but nothing important today. i was able to leave the bay early which was nice. tomorrow is going to be busy. reporter: eric left eugene tuesday morning en route to marin county. ray sierra left oregon earlier. his 100-year-old dad is waiting for them. >> we are coming from portland, headed to hayward to visit family.

yeah. it's been a long trip. reporter: long for adults is even longer for kids. how has the ride been, fast or slow? >> slow. reporter: the lund family is on route to sfo from nevada. >> i'm just headed to the san francisco airport, international departure. taking my wife and youngest son to go to the philippines. reporter: the other little ones will get back in the car with dad and head back to nevada in time to be with family for thanksgiving. >> i get bored all the time if i don't do anything. reporter:the car? >> video games. mario and minecraft and other stuff. reporter: as busy as it may have been on tuesday, it's nothing compared to what's expected in the coming days. if you are looking to avoid the traffic, aaa recommends hitting the roadways wednesday or thursday morning and also recommends not driving between the hours of 4:00 and 8:00 on

ryan curry spoke with experts to get an explanation on if we should expect this for the years to come. >> several days in advance. is that surprising? >> yeah. reporter: lots of people, stores, discounts. what's the real season of the deal? >> online, i can look at all the stuff they have an order it and it comes to my house. reporter: online retailers and stores are offering black friday deals. days before the actual day. >> we are seeing discounts in the realm of 15 to 30%. reporter: an inside analyst says early black friday deals are allowing retailers to beat competition and allow consumers the flexibility to buy things. it's noticeable this year because he says retailers are trying to combat inflation. >> we are starting to see the luster of black friday and some of these major shopping days start to fade. especially because the growth seems to be happening in other major sales days.

we are seeing an entire season. reporter: the decorations are certainly in place here in downtown walnut creek. if you go up and down broadway plaza, many stores already have black friday deals which begs the question, does black friday the day really exist anymore? >> discounts are available throughout the season. even before. that's pushing momentum away from these major days. reporter: it doesn't mean black friday is nonexistent. there will steel -- still be a big uptick in sales because the best deals are typically still on black friday. it just won't be as hectic as it was in years past. >> you are seeing discounts throughout the season. we see the best absolute discounts between thanksgiving and cyber monday. reporter: there is something else driving early sales. he says many retailers have a backlog of items they couldn't sell the last two years so they are offering them with early discounts. >> they can win the consumer's

of leaving a threatening voicemail at the congers men's office earlier this month. days later, he posted threatening comments about fbi director christopher wray on a facebook video. the congressman, from fairfield, spoke to cnn via zoom. >> it's all the hate talk that's readily available on all of social media platforms. it incites people. these kinds of violent threats and violent action. dan: the capitol police threat assessment team is investigating. the team has opened more than 9600 cases this year, a sharp increase from years past. new developments in the large-scale layoffs and bay area tech. palo alto-based hp is the latest to say it will size down. the computer giant plans to lay off 6000 employee by 2025. the company says there's been an 11% decrease in sales and their quarterly earnings have been lacking.

this isn't the first major tech company to make layoffs. metta and amazon are also cutting down staff. ama: the supreme court has delivered another blow to donald trump. the high court has cleared the way for the irs to release his tax returns. democrats have been fighting for access to his records for three years. in a statement, nancy pelosi said, these documents are vital to meeting the house constitutional mandate regarding the public interest defending our national security and holding our public officials to account. dan: president biden is extending the pause on federal student loan payments while his student loan relief plan is tied up in court. the plan of up to $20,000 in loan forgiveness was expected to go into effect before loan payments resumed in january. repayments will start 60 days after litigation is resolved which the president believes will happen. if a decision is not reached by

june 30 2023, payments will begin 60 days after that date. ama: a new rigorous study out of stanford finds giving kids a stanfordedice researchers followed 250 kids for five years. they found no connection between the age they got a phone and their grades. the studies author theorizes the parents of the kids in the study did a good job of balancing their decision with the child's and families needs. on average, kids in the study were 11.5 when they got their first phone. dan: that's a tricky decision. in the south bay, san jose's holiday roller rink is in full swing. hoping to attract people to the downtown core. abc7news reporter tim johns got a chance to check it out for us and has the story. ♪ reporter: after a few difficult years, downtown san jose is

alive once again, rolling into the holiday season. after opening to the public, city officials and locals descended on the downtown skate rink. >> it's pretty fun. reporter: besides offering a good time for residents, the goal is to encourage people to spend more time this holiday season shopping and eating locally. not just in the downtown area but throughout san jose. the outgoing mayor says he hopes it will provide a boost to small businesses, many of which are still struggling. >> being able to bring people back out onto the sidewalks and into public spaces again helps revitalizes. we want folks to be shopping local. reporter: in years past, this was the sight of the city's ice-skating rink. this year, people are hanging up ice skates for rollerskates. >> it's better for the earth. and ended up being much more feasible. the ice rink was costing a lot of money. a lot of logistical challenges.
