overnight a gunman opened fire at a virginia walmart. we'll hear from one of the eyewitnesses, an employee who says she came face-to-face with the shooter. >> at least six people were killed inside the store and several victims are being treated at a local hospital. jay o'brien starts us off on the scene in chesapeake, virginia. good morning, jay. >> reporter: michael, good morning. this is a small city now facing tragedy the day before thanksgiving, a busy shopping day. we've had people walking up to us here, clearly shell-shocked, including distraught employees of that walmart. >> respond at the 402 1521 sam's circle at walmart. >> this is super walmart. heard several shoots inside probably 20 minutes ago. >> reporter: six people plus the shooter killed after witnesses say a store manager went into a break room and opened fire just as employees were gathering for their shift. >> at the walmart, 16-year-old

then tell us what happened. >> yes, so we all gathered in the break room in order to just figure out what department we're all going to be in, what section we'll be working in basically and basically as soon as my team said, all right, we have a light night tonight, i looked up and my manager opened the door, and he just opened fire. he wasn't aiming at anybody specifically. he didn't -- yeah, he just literally started shooting throughout the entire break room. i watched multiple people just drop down to the floor, whether they were trying to duck for cover or they were hit. he just opened fire. he looked directly at me but he luckily missed my head by like an inch or two. >> oh, my goodness. was he saying anything? >> no, that's the weird thing. he didn't say a word. he didn't say anything at all. i literally hadn't seen him before that point. he just came around the corner and he just started shooting. the first person that was in his eyesight, he shot him down and the next thing you know he started going throughout the entire break room. he did not say a word, no, sir. >> what can you tell us about the manager? had he given any indication this might happen? >> i'm not going to lie. i've only been there two months.

when i first started, i did hear he was the manager to look out for because there was al something going on with him just having an issue with someone, but i never expected it to get to this level of an issue. like, i don't know of anything that had happened recently for him to just overflow with these emotions. but, yeah, he was the manager that everybody, you know, had something -- had something to say about pretty much. >> nothing like this? >> no, no, nothing at all. i would have never thought that he would do something like this, absolutely not. especially when like i said we were all literally just getting to our shifts. the night hadn't even started yet. we all clock in at 10:00 and by 10:12 they were calling the police saying he had started shooting. >> briana, i'm so sorry. thank you for sharing your story. our hearts are reaching out to everyone in your community. we're glad you're okay. thanks very much. >> thank you. no problem. thank you. >> goodness, all right, george, thank you.

the latest on the colorado lgbtq nightclub shooting. the suspect is out of the hospital in custody and due in court as we learn new details this morning. matt gutman is in colorado springs with the latest. good morning, matt. >> reporter: good morning, robin. this will be the suspect's first appearance. this is when they're read their charges in court. overnight we learned about the disturbing facebook post by the suspect's mother just hours before the shooting. she wrote her son had gone missing. she wrote he took her cell phone and debit card and cryptally promised the best night ever. overnight, abc news obtaining this chilling facebook post from laurel voepel, the mother of the colorado springs suspect concerned about her son's whereabouts saying my son is missing. he took my phone and debit card. we had plans and were so excited. she ends by saying her son told her to get ready to have the best night ever. the 22-year-old suspect now

facing preliminary charges for the first degree murder of ashley paugh, daniel aston, raymond green vance, kelly loving and derrick rump. ring camera footage from 2021 shows the suspect surrendering to police after allegedly making a bomb threat against his own mother. >> there was s.w.a.t. team, bomb squad, the whole nine yards. >> reporter: at the time this woman was renting a room in leslie bowman's home. >> were they significant warning signs? >> yes, absolutely. >> reporter: that dismissed and his record sealed after the family refused to press charges. that enabled the suspect to legally purchase that ar-style rifle. >> weren't the allegations against the suspect significant enough that red flag warnings or something could have been done, some sort of intervention to have stopped the massacre at club q? >> the answer i have to give if you ask me a direct question about a specific incident is that no such record or case exists. >> reporter: overnight monitoring hate speech online

reported a shocking 613% rise in hate speech against the lgbtq community. now, they're saying that is being parroted by politicians, social media influencers and they're concerned it will spur additional violence. robin? >> a lot of concern about that. thank you, matt. george? we turn to thanksgiving getaway. aaa predicts 55 million will travel to their destination for the holiday nearly equally pre-pandemic levels. transportation correspondent gio benitez is live at o'hare airport in chicago. good morning, gio. >> reporter: hey, george, good morning. you can see how packed it is here at o'hare. without a doubt, this is the busiest travel season in almost three years. let's take a look at what we are seeing at airports across this country from right here in chicago, of course, to new york, to minneapolis. about 5 million people traveling by air despite those ticket prices soaring 43% higher than last year. now, here in chicago we were able to go inside the united airlines command center where they are tracking every flight.

so far things are looking pretty smooth across the country because there's no severe weather affecting those major airlines, but if that changes, the people in this room go into overdrive and they start rerouting planes. now, we also spoke to their social media team. so many people, of course, they reach out for help on social media when they need something but tell us if you do have any problems, don't do that. the best thing you can do grab your phone, download that airline app in advance before your flight and use that to make any changes and reach out to someone. that's going to be the fastest way to reach someone. michael? >> all right, gio, thank you for that advice. we see it's very busy behind you at the airport. we'll go to the roads because today is expected to be the busiest travel day of the week by car and demarco morgan is there. >> reporter: michael, imagine the nightmare driving the busiest day of the season.

our chief foreign correspondent ian pannell is tracking the very latest on what we know and the urgent manhunt underway right now. good morning, ian. >> reporter: good morning, robin. israeli police are describing the two explosions as a suspected coordinated terror attack. both blasts happened near bus stops targeting morning rush hour commuters. hundreds of police and border guards are now working with security forces in a massive manhunt and also to check for further devices. tensions were already high in the area after months of raids in the occupied west bank. multiple attacks in israel targeting civilians. now, today these have been stabbings and shootings, but a bombing attack like this hasn't been seen in israel for more than ten years and marks a significant escalation by palestinian attackers and with the most right wing israeli government currently being formed under benjamin netanyahu there are real fears that the violence could escalate on both sides. robin? >> ian, thank you so much. george?

we'll get the latest now on donald trump. the supreme court rejected his request to keep his tax returns from congress clearing the way for their release after years of delays. senior national correspondent terry moran reports from the supreme court. good morning, terry. >> reporter: good morning, george. a big defeat for donald trump here at the supreme court. and it means that democrats in the house of representatives will finally get to scrutinize six years of trump's personal tax returns as well as the returns of some of his businesses, as well. the court finally bringing to an end this epic three-year legal battle between house democrats and trump. the court issuing an unsigned brief order with no public dissents from any of the justices, including the three appointed by trump himself. this case began when democrats in the house ways and means committee said they needed to see trump tax returns in order to make sure that the laws concerning irs audits of presidential returns were working properly. the supreme court says that's a legitimate legislative purpose and so trump must comply. but trump and republicans say this is nothing more than a

shanquella robinson at a luxury resort during a vacation in mexico. the fbi now investigating as a bombshell new development has emerged. mexican authorities say the american tourist may have been alive and that a medical professional on site may have been working on the 25-year-old for three hours before police arrived on the scene. according to local spanish language reports one of the guests staying at the resort called for help around 2:00 p.m. upon arriving and informing medical professionals that she had, quote, drunk a lot of alcohol. a doctor reportedly said she was stable but dehydrated suggesting she be treated at a hospital. the guest however insisted she stay in the villa. law enforcement authorities not called until later eventually declaring robinson deceased just after 6:00 p.m. those reports differing from an autopsy obtained by abc news listing that medical professionals arrived at the villa around 3:00 p.m. declaring

kumail nanjiani is taking on the true story of male revue founder steve banerjee in "welcome to chippendales." it's fun and you say you had to do it? >> i had to do it because it's based on a true story. we all know what the chippendales are. people don't know the guy who founded it was an immigrant from india and the story behind it is wild. there are multiple murders. there's arson, a lot of wild stuff happened the first like ten years of chippendales. >> sometimes the truth, right, they say is stranger than fiction? >> if you wrote this, nobody would believe it. they'd be like it's too much. there are so many specific strange things that happened and i don't really get the chance to play people who are like bad guys, you know, so that's why i was like, i have to do it. >> we have to see it. everybody, here's a look. >> no, we are not doing it.

insecurity so i put the book down and they said you should read this script. oh, i thought that was about -- no, you're wrong. stop being scared of everything and i read the script and read the book. >> stop being scared of everything. in the show you and claire danes, she's your co-star, you have a tumultuous complex relationship as a married couple but off set you bonded in a special way like dodgeball. >> we did an unusual rehearsal process playing a married couple married for 15 years and then go through this horrible divorce and so one of the kind of unusual things we did to kind of just get into the spirit of this, you know, tumultuous relationship was, yes, play a game of dodgeball. we have like a very contentious relationship but i did not want to have a contentious game of dodgeball because, you know, physical. it can hurt and can hurt. but it was kind of helpful like as an actor you do all sorts of like weird, you know, inexplicable things and

sometimes it can be helpful and some strange ways. >> you say you're most comfortable playing the anti-hero. >> yeah, it's interesting like this show, it starts off from my perspective. you think it's the story of this like put upon guy whose wife disappears in the show my wife, who claire danes play, disappears and drops the kids off and i can't find her and you think about this put upon sympathetic guy but you realize from her perspective he's not what the audience initially thinks of. yeah, i feel kind of most comfortable in that mode just because i don't know why. i guess, you know, as an actor it's more interesting to play the darker characters, but also i guess i have all this guilt around having such a nice cushy job i think maybe i offset some of that guilt by playing a character that no one likes. >> and in real life you're married, happily married in real life and heard your wife gave you some great advice when it comes to choosing which roles you should take.

>> yeah, especially like this with show my wife loved it. she's like, you know, in so many stories like men are seen as sympathetic and like pitiable for doing normal domestic things like you see a guy washing the dishes and you think what an amazing guy and my wife told me, like, that is absurd and you should push back against that. that's what the show does so well. you think that as an audience what an amazing guy just watching his kids for an hour which is not something you would ever think of if a woman was doing it. that's what the show pushes back on as well. >> i love that. i love her advice. >> yeah, yes, she was correct and, you know, she loves the show for that reason, you know, it really kind of in some ways like pulls the rug out from under the audience and shows the other perspective. >> the show is fantastic. you are fantastic. thank you for coming back.
