survey put its more than 166 million people will shop between thanksgiving and cyber monday, the highest number in the survey's five-year history. the majority plan to shop on black friday and 2/3 say they will shop in person. people expect to spend more than $800 on gift and holiday items, only slightly above the average the last 10 years. the number one reason for shopping -- the sales are just too good to pass up. but are holiday sales really as good as they appear to be an claim to be? that's the question. 7 on your side looked into it and michael finney will join us in our next half hour to show what he found out about those holiday sales. ama: a lot of people are getting ready to head out, have their thanksgiving meal somewhere. dan: it is such a nice time of year, and the weather has been beautiful. sandhya patel is here with the

forecast for thanksgiving and beyond. sandhya: that's right, and thanksgiving looks fantastic. tomorrow morning, we start off with some patchy fog, upper 30's to low 50's. it is kind of cool, but bright skies. quickly warming up and by 4:00 p.m., we are talking mid-60's to mid 70's, so many areas above average this time of year. it is a pretty quiet picture other than some showers across the south and some snow across the southern rockies. those will be the areas where you see the precip tomorrow, excessive and heavy rain across much of the southern states from texas to louisiana, so travel could be impacted as they are expecting flooding. wendy down in southern california, sun will be shining up and down the state. 75 in l.a. numerous wind warnings and wind advisories and a red flag warning going up thursday into friday, so be careful if you're traveling to the sierra.

problems that have tremendous buy-in. ama: a former marin county deputy district attorney has filed an 18 million dollars lawsuit against his former boss. he says the district attorney fired him after he filed a discrimination complaint. jones says he was subject to scrutiny and job reviews his white coworkers were not asked to complete. >> i think i was terminated because i was speaking out on how i was being treated differently and the color of my skin. ama: the suit also claims a manager who spoke out against jones' termination face retaliation. he says other workers of color faced a hostile environment after a coworker put up photos of them in lack face.

dan: those european-inspired green public toilets in san francisco will soon be removed from city streets and replaced with ones that have a more modern look. the replacement come with a zero dollar price tag from the city, but there are some strings attached. >> these parisian-inspired forest green public toilets that san francisco has grown accustomed to will soon say or for -- au revoir as the city replaces them with something more contemporary. >> i would say this is an elegant, modern design. >> the design from smith group won the competition. >> we are looking at the trends bay, the new bart portals, the kiosks in civic center, and try to make a family of street furniture that fits in with that model. >> the unusual texture also serves a purpose -- to defend against the elements and

dan: check this out. a time lapse of the thanksgiving travel rush this morning. airport officials said they are expecting the highest passenger traffic levels since before the pandemic. >> it is so busy. you know, we have never experienced this. >> you -- we don't usually fly before thanksgiving for this reason. we usually stay local, and it's nuts. >> our flight is not until 11:00. we are here at 8:00. dan: sfl -- sfo warns parking garages may be full, but you can go online to reserve a spot ahead of time. in terms of delays and

cancellations, it has been incredibly quiet. things going smoothly, flights in and out, really no problems that sfo. the weather, of course, has cooperated. here's a live look at our oakland airport camera across the bay. you can see weather is clear there as well. everything that we can tell is moving smoothly. earlier today, we saw a relatively light foot traffic. smaller crowds allowed travelers to pass through security with very little hassle. ama: it took additional traffic enforcement personnel to help manage drop-offs and pickups at the airport. four people waiting to book christmas flights, there is still hope. today on our three :00 p.m. show, kristen sze spoke with the founder of scott's cheap flights about how to score cheap flights for this holiday season. >> i think the leisure travel market has fully rebounded if not higher, so i would expect at

christmas, we are going to see pretty similar. if you are hoping for a good deal for christmas and have not booked yet, time is running out. what you want to do is circle the date of 21 days before when you are hoping to travel as the sort of dropdead deadline to get your flight booked. if you are hoping to travel on december 22, circle december 1 as when you have to get that flight looked by no matter what. the reason i say 21 days, many fares have advance purchase requirement of, say, 21 days. on day 20, that previously cheapest fare expires. it is no longer available and the newest will be a couple hundred dollars more expensive. even if the fare is higher, if you need that flight, circle 21 days and get it booked before then. ama: good info. well, you won't need a holiday sweater for christmas today. sandhya: you will probably be able to get away with shorts in

many parts of the bay area tomorrow afternoon. i know it is hard to believe. the golden gate bridge, it is a foggy view considering our high temperatures were in the low 60's to mid 70's, a good five to 12 degrees below average. hard to believe the fog rolled in. it is going to be around. visibility is down to a mile, so drive carefully. this is in half moon bay. certainly some thick fog. the fog is kind of playing tag with the coast. it will be limited to the coastline overnight tonight. we are watching high pressure as this has been the producer of our warm weather today. dry, dusty offshore wind brought us the warmth today. this system out here is kicking up the swells. a beach hazard statement starts at 12:00 and runs until early friday morning, so watch out if you are going to enjoy the beach. never turn your back on the water, higher risk of wind currents. in not diablo right now, wind of

tomorrow morning as you start out your day, watch out for patchy fog, and in the afternoon, notice these numbers pop up in the low to mid 70's. fog along the coast, upper 30's to low 50's, afternoon highs in the south bay. 72 in san jose. 74, gilroy on the peninsula. 67 pacifica. the sun will be shining in the north bay, low to mid 70's from san rafael to santa rosa in the east bay, 70 in oakland. above average temperatures, 73 fairfield, 70 in livermore. as we look ahead to the holiday weekend, a system passes to the north. monday, we have some scattered light showers coming in. that could impact travel back to the bay area from anywhere across the sierra or here in the

state. as you look here wednesday night, could see more precipitation. thanksgiving is bright and mild after morning fog, bright for shoppers, but cooler weather friday. cooling continues into the weekend and early next week, we bring in that light level 1 system with scattered showers, chilly, frosty morning tuesday, crisp in the afternoon. overall, pattern looks fantastic. dan: it has become a tradition for many, waiting in line for honeybaked ham the day before thanksgiving. people we talked with say the mind moved pretty fast, though. they waited 30 to 45 minutes. it is not just ham. you can also get honeybaked turkey as well. ama: sounds good. it is all hands on deck in san francisco's tenderloin district. a nonprofit is serving up more than 2000 meals tomorrow.

they tell us it is the volunteers making it happen. >> packing pies and slicing bread. thanksgiving day celebrations are underway and glide's kitchen is popping. the director of the nonprofit's daily free meal program. >> today is a big day. we are preparing for our traditional thanksgiving meal that is being served tomorrow from 11:00 to 1:00. >> more than 2000 meals will be served in the heart of san francisco's tenderloin district and everyone is welcome. >> many of the most marginalized will be joining us. many folks who do not have any place to go will be joining us. we will actually take a bunch of meals out on the street for folks that cannot make it in. >> it is these volunteers helping to make it all happen. couples like richard and jordan who are visiting from new york. >> my husband and i come every thanksgiving for the past four or five years. my family lives in the bay area, so whatever we are in town, we come to glide, either today or

welcomed the salvation army today to ring the closing bell. the dow was up 95 points, the nasdaq up 110. the s&p also ended on a high note, up 23 points. the number of americans looking for work is on the rise. unemployment increased last week to its highest level since august, and it is higher than economists expected. there may soon be another significant jump in unemployment after a wave of layoffs at tech companies in the bay area. dan: chicken prices are finally dropping. they were up nearly 15% this october compared to the 12 months before. analysts say the cost of chicken remained higher than usual even after the prices of other meat products dropped. the problem -- strong demand and supply issues. now that those have relaxed, prices are starting to go down again. ama: thanksgiving is all about the food, but what about our neighbors who have a hard time getting groceries? dan: still to come, i will show you how visiting the san francisco museum can help unlock

dan: let's focus now on the latest on the mask shooting in colorado springs. this afternoon, the suspect appeared in court for the first time. five people were killed, dozens more wounded in the attack at an lgbtq club. ama: survivors are speaking out from their hospital beds, recounting the horrific moments when the suspect open fire. >> i find there is legal authority to hold anderson without bond. >> the 22-year-old charged with the first-degree murder five victims. quickly are going to be the voice for the victim in the courtroom and we will be fighting alongside them through this entire process. >> dozens more were injured when police say the shooter opened fire at this lgbtq club saturday night. >> all of a sudden, which is here pop, pop, pop, pop. >> james is a regular club q.

he was shot along with his partner and sister. >> i just watch as several people in the bar area just lit up. i look at my partner who is shot in the leg and i saw my sister on the ground. >> the suspect's mother seemingly concerned about her son's whereabouts in the hours before the shooting. she ends her message by saying her son told her to get ready to have the best night ever. the suspect was known to law enforcement. this ring camera video showing him surrendering to police after an alleged bomb threat against their own mother. the case was dismissed and the suspect's records sealed after the family refused to press charges, enabling the suspect to legally purchase an ar-style rifle. dan: this violence can take a toll. if you or a loved one are

dan: the public health department has reported its first flu death of the season. he had not received a flu shot. >> the single most important thing anyone is going to do is get vaccinated right now so that they had into the rest of this winter season protected. dan: flu shots are pretty easy to get. most local pharmacies are offering them for free. ama: on the eve of thanksgiving, we are turning our focus to places known as food deserts, areas where at least 1/3 of the population lives more than half a mile away from a grocery store . smaller section of those neighborhoods are also low income. stephanie sierra introduces you to some of the people impacted. stephanie: this thanksgiving, carmen has a choice -- pay rent or put food on the table.

known to be food deserts, now offering a total of 400 sites across the county. >> a lot of our food is going into those cities in order to ensure those gaps were met. >> according to the california health interview survey, over the past five years, more than 1/3 of adults 18 and older living below the federal poverty line in alameda county have not been able to afford enough food. last year around 57% of those impacted were hispanic or latino. nearly 40% were black. 22% were asian and 22% white. >> the need of the county is pretty on par with the height of the pandemic. >> even the food bank is struggling to provide. the agency's holiday budget is up 50% this year. >> we are probably looking at 7% inflation. >> san jose state economics professor justin reese says rising prices will soon start to level off but warns not to get comfortable. >> that does not mean the prices

dan: finally tonight, a few thoughts about what really matters. tomorrow is a uniquely american holiday, my favorite of the year. it is a time to be together, to share a nice meal and is the name of the holiday reminds us, to give thanks. for all of us with a roof over our heads, food to eat, and a family to care for, there is much to be thankful for. for far too many people, tomorrow will be like any other day of the year, a lonely, hardscrabble, struggled to just get by. they don't have homes to shelter or family for help, but many of us who live -- we don't live on the streets have the cold, harsh reality of days, weeks, months, lifetime, sadly, of dealing with hunger and often mental illness. if only we could wave a magic wand and sold it, but of course, we cannot. what we can do this thanksgiving and holiday season is remember this holiday season and do what
