ama: two legislators locked in a battle on twitter. scott weiner of san francisco and marjorie taylor greene of georgia. their fight is over much more than just words. good evening. dan: congresswoman greene name-calling senator wiener while advocating the passage of an anti-transgender law that she's introducing to congress. ama: days after the mass shooting an lbd to q light -- nightclub in colorado. dan: tim johns is here in the newsroom. reporter: this isn't the first time they have clashed with each

other on twitter. this time seems to be especially bad. despite the homophobic hate, he doesn't plan to stop fighting for what he believes in. marjorie taylor greene calling out california state senator scott wiener in a tweet sent out tuesday. green called weiner a communist groomer. weiner responding to abc7news iphone. >> i get death threats. it's pretty bad. she's an atrocious human being. reporter: the word groomer has homophobic and trans phobic undertones. in recent times, it has regained popularity among proponents of far right conspiracy theories like qanon. >> it used to have a specific meaning but it no lonit is beiny to attack lgbtq people and basically say that we are pedophiles. reporter: she called for the

passing of her protect children's innocence act. the bill would make it a felony to perform gender affirming care on a minor. >> unfortunately, what we know very clearly is that this type of rhetoric from people like marjorie taylor greene has a really devastating impact on the mental health of lgbtq people and trans kids in particular. reporter: samuel garrett works with equality california. he says rhetoric like this can have devastating consequences for trans youth, a group which suffers from disproportionate rates of violence and suicide. >> what we saw over the weekend is those kind of statements by her and her colleague in colorado, combined with lax gun laws can lead to violent attacks against the lgbtq community. reporter: new polling shows that 72% of transgender respondents

and 48% of lgbtq people overall say the current political environment makes them fear for their personal safety. all the more reason weiner says he's encouraging everyone to stand up to the hatred anyway they can. >> getting the right people elected in office. that's ultimately what it comes down to. reporter: legislators in state houses across the country have introduced 344 anti-lgbtq bills just this session. 25 of those have passed. dan: thank you very much. all of this on the heels of a mass shooting at an lgbtq+ nightclub in colorado springs. the suspect, 22, had their first virtual court appearance today. the judge ruled there was legal authority to hold aldrich without bond. in court, they were slouched over in a wheelchair with noticeable bruises on their

face. charges include five counts of first-degree murder, one for each victim, and five counts of a bias with -- motivated crime. his next court -- the next court date is december 6. ama: upright flag created by original rainbow flag designer gilbert baker was raised today. city and community leaders held an emotional ceremony to remember the five victims that were killed at club q on saturday. people recited poetry, saying each victim's name out loud. the flag is a symbol for the lgbtq community and has deep roots in san francisco, its original home. it will remain in colorado for the next two weeks. dan: now to the mass shooting we brought u.s. breaking news last night. six people killed inside the break room of a walmart in chesapeake before the shooter turned the gun on himself. five victims have been

for us. especially with packages. reporter: abdul is one of the managers at the site. they plan to ship around 6 million packages from this location. across the lower distribution level are conveyor belts full of packages, waiting to be sent to their final destination. this is just the beginning. >> the busiest rate for us -- streak for us is december 12 through 17th. after that, we stop approaching our deadlines for shipping your parcels and letters. we encourage everybody to ship early. reporter: there's 1000 employees at this location at any given time, sorting mail, rounding corners. all to get your holiday mail in on time. >> 650 five men and women of u.s. postal service are really proud of their responsibility in delivering the holidays for america. reporter: he says they start preparing for the holiday season at the start of the year. everything from big boxes to small ones to a section for

activists protesting the consumption of turkeys on thanksgiving. >> turkeys love their children. >> just like us. >> because it's not food. >> its violence. >> it's not a holiday. >> its violence. ama: they walked through aisles and stood outside the store with information for interested customers. dan: in the north bay, a former marin county deputy district attorney has filed an $18 million lawsuit against his former boss. cameron jones says district attorney lauren for goalie fired him after he filed a discrimination complaint. he says he was subject to scrutiny and job reviews his white coworkers were not asked. >> i was terminated because i was speaking out on how i was being treated differently. in the color of my skin. dan: the suit claims a manager who spoke out against jones termination faced retaliation. charles bonner says other

employees of color were subject to a hostile work environment after a staff member put up an offensive photo of them in blackface. the photo was near a shooting range target with bullet holes. the da said she can't comment on the lawsuit but released a statement saying she finds racism in any form to be important and does not condone prejudice or racism on any level. ama: the oakland mayor elect address the city for the first time today. the 51st mayor of the town laid out her priorities for which he takes office. she's an ugly native who once faced homelessness and poverty. she let a campaign promising to fill vacancies at the oakland police department and tackle housing for renters. >> as we get to work, i'm going to focus on the top priorities which i spelled out in my campaign. safety. homelessness. of course, cleaning up our streets. ama: she beat lauren taylor by less than 700 votes in rank-choice voting.

the mayor elect said she will work with councilman taylor on her plans. she will be sworn in in january. dan: amazon is beefing up its film spending. amazon plans to invest $1 billion per year to produce the -- theatrical film releases. amazon plans to release up to 15 movies per year. it comes after the online retail giant acquired film entertainment company mgm for $8.4 billion earlier this year. movie theater stocks surged after today's news as theater chains still try to bounce back from the pandemic. our work in building a better bay area means striving to make it better for everyone. on this thanksgiving eve, a focus on those without a place to call home but working to get by. tonight, fresh turkey dinner served by city team in oakland. j.r. stone spoke with those who are often overlooked but staying optimistic. reporter: this pre-thanksgiving
