groomer. weiner responding to abc7news iphone. >> i get death threats. it's pretty bad. she's an atrocious human being. reporter: the word groomer has homophobic and trans phobic undertones. in recent times, it has regained popularity among proponents of far right conspiracy theories like qanon. >> it used to have a specific meaning but it no longer has that meaning. it is being used now primarily to attack lgbtq people and basically say that we are pedophiles. reporter: she called for the passing of her protect children's innocence act. the bill would make it a felony to perform gender affirming care on a minor. >> unfortunately, what we know very clearly is that this type of rhetoric from people like marjorie taylor greene has a

really devastating impact on the mental health of lgbtq people and trans kids in particular. reporter: samuel garrett works with equality california. he says rhetoric like this can have devastating consequences for trans youth, a group which suffers from disproportionate rates of violence and suicide. >> what we saw over the weekend is those kind of statements by her and her colleague in colorado, combined with lax gun laws can lead to violent attacks against the lgbtq community. reporter: new polling shows that 72% of transgender respondents and 48% of lgbtq people overall say the current political environment makes them fear for their personal safety. all the more reason weiner says he's encouraging everyone to stand up to the hatred anyway they can. >> getting the right people

elected in office. that's ultimately what it comes down to. reporter: legislators in state houses across the country have introduced 344 anti-lgbtq bills just this session. 25 of those have passed. dan: thank you very much. all of this on the heels of a mass shooting at an lgbtq+ nightclub in colorado springs. the suspect, 22, had their first virtual court appearance today. the judge ruled there was legal authority to hold aldrich without bond. in court, they were slouched over in a wheelchair with noticeable bruises on their face. charges include five counts of first-degree murder, one for each victim, and five counts of a bias with -- motivated crime. his next court -- the next court date is december 6. ama: upright flag created by original rainbow flag designer
