we have been doing this 22 years on the marina green. >> for some it is a new tradition for others, it is a holiday tradition not to be missed. either way, it is fun for all ages. >> get the kids motivated to play some american football. >> a few miles away, fun involving another kind of football. it is game time at the north beach. two big world cup matches on this thanksgiving day. >> i'm a big soccer fan so i love having football all around. >> freddie of chief sullivans bar has been working on this day so others can enjoy the big match. and perhaps even a big meal later on. >> we're going to have thanksgiving eight at the -- at the bar, too. but to have a world cup game on thanksgiving -- >> yeah, it's different. >> dan duncan is game for a little change on this holiday. >> it is nice to come here and go see your family. >> another diehard soccer fan turned out today. who are you rooting for?

>> brasília. >> to you and yours, happy thanksgiving. >> st. anthony's since entrances go provided a warm meal to thousands of people this thanksgiving. the kitchen staff prepared 2000 pounds of turkey, 500 pounds of green beans and 1800 pounds of mashed potatoes. there was also 120 gallons of gravy and 228 clunking pies. >> dozens of volunteers served food, bus tables and offered community connection. >> people come from all over and so many people are -- elderly people that people are having a hard time. a lot of times they do not have families or have anywhere to be together. so we are together. >> st. anthony's has been serving thanksgiving meals for 70 years in the tenderloin. >> the salvation army continued its thanksgiving tradition today. volunteers deliver meals to thousands of people who cannot leave their homes.

abc7 news reporter gloria renne tragarz has the stories. >> you'll be taken care of. >> the volunteers pick up thanksgiving meals to deliver to seniors in need in san francisco. >> in san francisco there are so many seniors that are shut in, that don't have anybody visit them. what we are going to be doing is blessing those folks, we have 4200 meals that will be delivering these meals to their doors one at a time. >> trevor is recovering from alcoholism. and living at the salvation army hope or light center in san francisco for six months rehab program. he helped hand out thanksgiving for volunteers to deliver. he got a thanksgiving meal himself last night with other clients. >> it was a check in humility to know that sometimes we'll -- we need. i have been on the giving side but to be on the receiving side, it is, it runs the gamut of what

it is to be involved in something like that, the salvation army. >> he's counting his blessings this thanksgiving. >> i can't say i felt this good since i do not know how long. it feels good to wake up feeling good. i'm grateful for salvation army first and foremost. very grateful for everyone who is been around here to tell me, it is ok to admit you cannot do everything on your own. i'm grateful for everyone i have met, staff and participants alike. i'm grateful on a more personal level to rediscover a lot of things that i forgot about in the past years about myself. >> and, of course, they holiday season is just getting started. the salvation army's red kettle campaign is underway. the money goes to support programs throughout the year. and it stays local. gloria rodriguez, abc7 news. >> san francisco's glaad memorial church held a traditional thanksgiving celebration today. the fire chief jimmy nicholson was among those volunteering this morning.

they had a big outdoor area set up to serve meals to those in need. in addition to all of the food, they offered covid and flu and monkeypox vaccines. >> glaad loves taking care of the people, all over the neighborhood no matter where you are from. as long as i have known them they have been feeding people breakfast, lunch, and dinner. i really appreciate mp i think offer them. >-- and i thank. for them. >-- thank god for them. >> people across the east bay had a number of free meals to choose from this holiday. long lines wrapped around the block for many of these highlighting the need in oakland. leah holland has the story. the turkeys are prepped, the gravy is hot and hungry bellies already, lined up around the block. >> often, this is a great way to spend at least part of your thanksgiving day. >> tom has been coming to lake

marriott methodist church for three decades. the same amount of time this church has given back to oakland every turkey day. >> happy thanksgiving. >> he says the line tells a much bigger story about the need in oakland. >> what you probably see is a lot of elderly members of our community. they live nearby, and some senior housing. and they are struggling paycheck-to-paycheck. and so, these meals and their groceries we provide are critical help to make ends meet. >> richard lives alone and is not in a position to cook a full turkey dinner to himself. >> you get that good energy, and that is so important. so important. right now i have ptsd. >> of course none of these meals would be possible without the hard-working volunteers that have given up time of their own families to serve others this thanksgiving. >> it is about a family. and this is about a bigger

family than my own family. >> meanwhile, 2 star market owned and operated by four brothers is celebrating their 20th anniversary thanksgiving community dinner. >> from us, our holiday month of ramadan and we want to capitalize on the spirit of giving back and use this day to get back to the community. it was not for the community we would not be here. >> i didn't have anywhere else to go during this thanksgiving. >> a welcome meal for patrice williams looking for relief from inflation that hit her family heart. >> they are so generous. they, obviously, know what low income people are going through when they don't have the money to buy a big thanksgiving feast. >> it's a thanksgiving tradition for some to get a run or walk in. boy, was it a beautiful day.

this is the annual oakland turkey trot. the 5k started at the lake merritt pergola. it was also a run for wildlife, the 200 yard dash for kids. the turkey trot is a way to give thanks and get back. 100% of proceeds benefit local schools and the alameda county food bank. >> penny of people trotted in the south bay -- plenty of people trotted. they held a 5k and a 10k any kids fun run and downtown san jose. organizers say it is america's largest thanksgiving day race. more than 15,000 people participated in person and virtually. >> my wife signed me up for it i'm like, ok, let's do it. 10k, not bad. >> we wanted to get out and do exercise before we gobble until we wobble. >> before pie! >>. data is such a good point -- that is such a good point. things included a costume contest at the start line. the silicon valley trot has

donated $11 million to date in support of local charities. >> and hundreds of people headed to the golden gate park for a san francisco turkey trot this morning. the 20th year of the 5k and 10k race. costumes were of course highly recommended. look at the turkey. >> love it. after the turkey trot and feasting many people gear up for shopping. according to a recent survey, 80% of consumers plan to shop dudring the black friday -- during black friday and cyber monday 10% more than last year. but as a ron curry tells us, experts are concerned about the impact of inflation. >> quiet shopping centers will soon be full of shoppers embracing black friday. this year might be different. >> we are back to normal. >> a professor of retail management at santa clara university says the pandemic will not have a major effect on how people shop this year. >> people are visiting stores. i think it was a misconception about six months, one year ago

that the growth in e-commerce was so large that it was going to stay and people will stay away from stores. that's really not turned out to be true. >> besides advertising deals are already in place and some of the stores open bright and early friday morning. but, of course, there is one thing affecting how people will shop on black friday -- that is inflation. >> anything, big-ticket items that are not necessary they will not buy. these will items, people will be cautious. >> he says those ims incde fuure or laitems during the . the national retail federation is predicting a record number of people shopping on black friday. but he says inflation will reduce the number. >> it is between 6% and 8%. that is a healthy growth rate but it is not when inflation is running 5%. that means they are growing real at 2%. >> he expects that it will still be an active shopping season, but that people will be buying cheaper items for holiday gifts.

taken to the er. all injuries are reported ass non-life-threatenin. all lanes have reopened on highway 101 leading up to the bay bridge. another multicar crash in that area. and another unfortunate crash an accident involving eight vehicles happened on the bridge this morning, blocking three lanes. two people were transported to a local hospital but neither patient had life a trending injuries. officials cleared the lanes but delays are expected to continue throughout the day. >> the contra costa sheriff is conducting an investigation after neighbor told abc7 news someone died on history. mountain view avenue new willow cove elementary school. >> don't want to see nobody die. this is supposed to be a peaceful, gathered and a family and they have a good time. it was supposed to be. >> this new video shows please setting up caution tape and speaking with people on scene.

the sheriff has not yet confirmed the exact nature of the investigation. we'll continue to bring you new information as it comes into our newsroom. >> new details the family of katie meier's, a stanford athlete who died by suicide earlier this year, filed a lawsuit against stanford university for wrongful death. the san francisco chronicle reports the lawsuit claims a disciplinary letter was sent to meyers the night of her death containing threatening language of potential removal from the school. the letters was sen to her for reality adding against a student football player who allegedly sexually assaulted her front. >> ahead, honoring the late john madden with a holiday commemoration. how the nflheirst thanksgiving since his death. >> as we head to break, here are a few thoughts of gratitude from around the bay area. >> i'm grateful for my family and my friends, because i go to a boarding school and i'm am not able to see them very often. so, i'm really grateful to see

>> a brush fire close the road near mendocino sonoma county caught flames today. the fire burned about seven acres of land, not too much but no evacuations were required. officials were able to contain the fire with air drops and crews will continue to put out hotspots for the next couple hours. >> turning to the weather now. boy, was it beautiful today. >> i know. >> could not complain. >> a++ >> weather we can all be thank for. >> thankful for our family and friends and the weather. i do want to show you our temperatures today. it was in record territory. napa airport 70 degrees.

santa rosa airport a record at 72 degrees. mild around oakland, santa cruz redwood city, fairfield in the low 70's. 73 san jose. got up to 67 in the city. 74 degrees in cloverdale and 76 in gilroy. really had to believe it is -- hard to believe it is this late in the year. the air quality is good to moderate. unfortunately, there is some haze in the air. the air has been declared for tomorrow -- spare the air alert for friday, moderate to poor air quality, the worst of it in the santa clara valley. sunday we start to see improve it good to moderate air quality. here is the deal. high pressure providing us with the warmth, also keeping a lid on the atmosphere which is why all of the pollutants are getting trapped near the surface and that is why the air quality is declining. we do have beach hazard statement in effect until 1 a.m. tomorrow.
