ama: police arrested a man who stole a muni bus and attacked the driver. officers took the suspect into custody. the incident started a mile from their at portland and mission streets. police say the suspect boarded a bus with no passengers just before 8:00 this night. after assaulting the driver, the suspect drove the bus, hitting 10 vehicles along the way. officers were able to take the suspect into custody. the driver suffered injuries. they are expected to be ok. good evening and thank you for joining us. now we move to the south bay and an iconic holiday tradition. christmas in the park opens today with thousands in

attendance. tim johns brings us the story. >> merry christmas. merry christmas. reporter: it's beginning to look a lot like christmas in san jose. >> it's beautiful. my son loves it. my husband loves it. reporter: the biggest holiday tradition, christmas in the park , officially open for 2022. >> this is my favorite part of the holiday season. i've been coming here for as long as i could remember. reporter: packed into cesar chavez park as well as many kids wanting to tell santa what they want under the tree this year. >> my mom promised us one. >> pokemon cards. reporter: how many do you want? >> 1000. reporter: officials say they are expecting over one million people to walk through the gates. many of those who come out do so to see the famous christmas trees that line the park. each one decorated by a specific person or group for a special

things. let me show you a live picture right now. it's a foggy golden gate bridge. visibility down to three miles in half moon bay. there's a cold front up to the north. a drive front for us but as it comes through here, it will clean out our air. we have fog around in high clouds as we take a look at our local picture. into tomorrow morning, we will start you off with 30's and 40's. higher clouds parting ways by the afternoon. warming up into the upper 50's to upper 60's. not as warm as it has been. when you look at the temperature trend, average high of 61, above average for the weekend. really dropping as we head towards next week. that's just the beginning of some big changes ahead. ama: thank you. in the east bay, a new initiative to encourage more people to shop locally. martinez has rolled out a gift program ahead of tomorrow's small business saturday.

anser hassan has more. >> here's new to. this is the first edition b eedrill. reporter: they opened their new location three months ago. they specialize in board games, trading card games, pokemon is a huge hit. >> a perfect 10 means it was perfect right out of the factory. reporter: the store manager says business has been solid. they offered special black friday sales. they host a card exchange event. he says the card market and collectibles have taken a hit since peaking during the pandemic. economic uncertainties are ahead. >> the card market is in a low right now. it's a little uncertain where it's going to go from here. hopefully the holidays will boost those kind of sales. reporter: the next couple weeks are critical for you guys. >> yes. reporter: small business

saturday, designed to promote shopping at small businesses. some bay area cities have come up with programs to help promote shopping locally such as the digital gift card. >> i'm not a huge shopper but i'm learning from my friend. [laughter] she gets me out and convinces me to go to all the little fun spots. we shop a lot downtown. reporter: she supports the city's effort to support local businesses. the city of martinez points to studies that show that local retailers pump 47% of their revenue back into the local economy. compared to just 14% by national chains. for mom-and-pop restaurants, it's higher. 73% compared to 30% by national chains. >> we love to pump money into local businesses. we shop down here for dinners and the shops. it's important to shop where you live. it builds up the community. reporter: shoppers can build

relationships with local businesses which is important for her as well. >> a lot of the stores are not everywhere. the ones that are coming you know they have authentic stuff. so it's good to support. reporter: support local. >> exactly. reporter: abc 7 news. ama: today is a record-setting black friday. we will see a record for sales in the shopping. expects total spending will top $9 million for the first time ever. plenty of people shopped in person today as well. this was the theme at the livermore outlets. more time than usual to get the best prices the season. dion lim gives us a look at the reason why. reporter: we haven't seen this kind of shoulder to shoulder black friday mania in a few years. throngs of shoppers still patiently waited in line for hours at this best buy in san jose. >> it's excitement to come and

shop and wait in line. reporter: same for this bass pro shop location. lining up early is still a tradition for some. >> 7:00 yesterday. was in line and anticipating the deals for today. we are very thankful for everybody who's in line, wanting to spend the morning with us. reporter: despite rising food and gas prices, the national retail federation estimates 8 million more shoppers than last year will take advantage of deep discounts. you also have more time than ever to score a deal. >> you can play a game of chicken if you are willing. the retailer may lower the price throughout the holiday shopping season. this is very unusual. it happens when the economy is rough. it happened during the recession for example over a decade ago. reporter: while more consumers still prefer to spend in on black friday, the online deals are growing for a reason. >> part of it is honestly

because the retailers made it that way. they want you to be on their websites at all times because you might get a great deal. it's exhausting. g baaion items in the bes certain categories. >> black friday and cyber monday are typically the best deals o'. it used to be that the best time was in march. retailers have figured out that's what gets you in the door. you are going to want to buy the buy one get one free dvd and maybe you will buy some thing else. tools tend to go on sale. clothing is pretty popular. a lot of retailers tend to discount their clothing during this time. those are the places i would look the most. reporter: happy bargain-hunting. abc 7 news. ama: tourism is picking up this holiday season. security presences in our -- increasing. multiple robberies in union square last year.

this season, the city increased security and doubled down on thf sluggishness, it's nice to see union square back to where it is. ama: the christmas tree in union street station entrances are some attractions drawing people back to the area. the winter wonderland is open daily from noon until 7:00 through december 24. in the east bay, multiple streets blocked off or a special lighting of the old oak tree in danville. the ceremony kicked off with musical selections from local choirs followed by a tree lighting ceremony from father christmas. the 350-year-old tree sits in the center of diablo road. today is a popular time for people to create meals with thanksgiving leftovers. the downtown streets team used extras from its holiday feast to

serve meals to the homeless at all saints church this afternoon. volunteers provided a selection of sandwiches, salads, pies and more. >> it's about building community. in terms of solving an issue like homelessness, it will take a community response and we are building that bridge between folks in our community. ama: this was the downtown streets team 70th year serving meals. they are located in 16 communities throughout california. elon musk promises amnesty for suspended twitter accounts as soon as next week. tonight, local experts weigh in on what this means. how remembering slain san francisco harvey milk will be different this year. a look at what's coming up tonight on jimmy kimmel live. >> we are back to do this all over again. ama: a deadly mass shooting shooting at a walmart. the supervisor who killed six coworkers left behind what he called a death note on his phone. he apologizes while also blaming others for mocking him. he wrote, sorry everyone but i didn't plan this. i promise things fell in place like i was led by satan. police say the nine millimeter handgun used in the shooting was purchased legally that morning and the shooter had no criminal record. sunday march the 44th anniversary of the assassination of harvey milk and george moscone he. the community is gathering at harvey milk plaza in the castro for a candlelight vigil in remembrance.

as tara campbell tells us, in the wake of the colorado springs shooting, this year's commemoration is taking on new meaning. reporter: this was the scene last sunday in the castro. the community and its allies gathering in wake of the deadly shooting at an lgbtq+ nightclub in colorado springs. this sunday, they will gather again on the 44th anniversary of the assassinations of supervisor harvey milk and mayor george moscone he, both shot by supervisor don white at san francisco city hall. >> it was political violence that took away mayor george moscone he and harvey milk. it was hate fueled political violence. what we are seeing four decades later is the same thing happening. reporter: jeffrey kwong is the vice president of the harvey milk lgbtq democratic club. the organization publicly condemning congresswoman marjorie taylor greene's attack

on state senator scott wiener this week. falsely calling him a groomer. >> these impacts are intensified . attacks are intensified the week after. it's horrifying. >> the rise in homophobia and transphobia against our community is another reminder that what happened in 1978 to harvey milk is not over. reporter: according to the human rights campaign, in 2022, 36 states introduced anti-lgbtq+ bills and kwong says those legislative actions are fueling violence against the community. >> a slew of legislation pouring across state legislatures, targeting kids in schools, transgender kids especially. reporter: too many candles lit and too many lives lost. but this sunday, the community will do it again. abc 7 news. ama: the abc 7 original
