good morning, america. thank you so much for joining us. it's a busy saturday morning. including the storm system that's on the move, how it could impact the busiest travel day of the year. as millions of americans head home after the holiday, the travel rush expected to reach pre-pandemic levels. buness saturals on ts small >> we have team coverage including a look at the hottest deals from toys to travel. abc's elwyn lopez is in atlanta with more on that massive crush of shoppers. >> reporter: eva, good morning, quite a crush indeed. some deal hunters in chicago weren't able to fill up their carts with those rock-bottom items. packed aisles caused police to close outlets there. the holiday shopping frenzy is in full swing.

this morning, the epic marathon marching into the record books. >> we still love coming out together and shopping together and finding all the good deals. >> reporter: more than half of the entire u.s. population expected to shop over the holiday weekend all the way to cyber monday, a record 166 million americans will be hunting for a deal in store and online. >> i feel pretty good. finally getting a ps5. >> reporter: shoppers spent a record-breaking $5.29 billion online on thanksgiving day, right from their couches, but black friday still tops the charts, with nearly 115 million people strolling the aisles in the search of bargains. >> i haven't been black friday shopping in years and i just kind of decided, why not? >> reporter: but scenes like this appear to be a thing of the past. >> we thought people would be

fighting, but it was pretty chill. >> reporter: big box stores looking to unload excess inventory. >> that picture has changed dramatically, retailers have excessive inventory they need to get rid of. >> reporter: packing the stores, prompting retailers to roll out major discounts for weeks. >> consumers paying more for the basics, it's important for us to provide great deals no matter what your budget is. >> reporter: and guys, shoppers we could see, up to 16 million of them that's according to experts the big push today though is to shop local when crossing off that holiday list. janai. >> so much shopping to do, elwyn, thank you. and we do turn now to the bigger picture and what this means for the state of the economy. abc business correspondent deirdre bolton is here now. good morning to you. we're seeing record shoppers, huge spending this long weekend, but the fed economists also warning the chance of a u.s.

recession is about 50% for next year, what does that say for state of economy? >> reporter: the state of the economy for december is strong, because consumer spending is two-thirds of our economic activity, that means what we all collectively spend and that's showing economic strength, so if we judge by the record holiday spending so far things are looking great. now experts say while americans are concerned about 40-year high inflation levels, especially for basics such as rent and groceries, holiday habits are hard to break, so most people will find other ways at other times to tighten their belts, so far shoppers are buying gifts in two big categories -- toys and electronics. some of the hottest toys, we have a list for you. squishmallows, roblox, paw patrol, cocomelon, now top gaming consoles including nintendo switch, xox series x and playstation 5. as for electronics you have

thing thanksgiving holiday, tomorrow is traditionally the busiest travel day of the year. reena roy joins us from newark airport with more. >> reporter: whit, good morning to you, that's right, you can see behind me people are already lining up early this morning here at the airport, we hit a bit of traffic on the drive in, as you said millions are hopping on flights today and tomorrow with those thanksgiving leftovers, and let's take a look at the numbers here. the tsa said they screened 9.5 million people from sunday to thursday, that's up slightly from last year. tomorrow's expected to be the busiest day of this holiday travel period at airports across the country. air travel almost hitting pre-pandemic levels, and if you're hitting the roads you can expect to see a lot of people there as well, 49 million are driving during this holiday period, some good news for those drivers behind the wheel, gas prices might be higher this year but they are down about 13 cents this week from last, the national average is now at $3.58

per gallon, and when it comes to timing all of this out, experts say to try to avoid driving between 4:00 and 8:00 p.m. when traffic is expected to be the worst. >> thanks, reena. now to that alarming incident that took place on jetblue flight, a passenger allegedly held a small blade to a throat of another passenger, abc's elizabeth schulze joins us now from washington. good morning to you, elizabeth. >> reporter: eva, good morning. federal prosecutors have charged a man with bringing a weapon on an aircraft and assault after this disturbing incident on a passenger flight earlier this week. >> jetblue, e.t.a. 14:09. jetblue ops reporting one male passenger threatening another passenger. >> reporter: this morning, an utah man is facing federal assault charges after police said he brought a razor

blade on to the plane and then allegedly held it up to a woman's throat during the flight. video shows police escorting the man identified as 41-year-old merrill darrell fackrell off the jetblue flight. after it landed monday in salt lake city. passengers now describing what they called a terrifying scene. >> i could tell he had something in his hand. which i think is a weapon. >> reporter: federal prosecutors said that fackrell was in a window seat next to a woman when he placed his hand on her screen and told her to pause her movie. authorities said the woman told police that's when she noticed his hand was clutched inches away from her throat. holding a razor blade. she said she lunged for the aisle, her husband sitting next to her alerting flight attendants. >> she was able to break away and run to the front. >> reporter: the mid-air scare coming just weeks after a man allegedly brought two box cutters on to a frontier airlines. george stephanopoulos pressing

the tsa administrator on how that man got through security. >> we take it seriously. it's an all hands on deck effort from the local airport all the way up to the headquarters. we have changed our training procedures a bit and changed our standard operating procedures a bit. >> reporter: but new questions arising after this latest incident as millions hit the skies this holiday weekend. security?ke, how did he get pas- i don't know. >> reporter: now we reached out to fackrell's lawyers for comment and haven't heard back. tsa is working with authorities on this incident. they worked on to de-escalate this incident. >> a big travel holiday. elizabeth, thank you. this morning, all eyes are on the weather as millions of people are on the move returning from the long holiday weekend. it's not looking pretty in some spots. joining us now is meteorologist danielle breezy from our affiliate wkrn in nashville. good morning to you, danielle. >> reporter: good morning,

janai, a lot of folks waking up to a soggy start on this saturday. if you're doing some traveling be aware it's going to be wet out there. where the storm system is right now. as you look at the map, you'll see it's over texas down to houston, but as head into the early even hours, heavy rain pushing into missouri, back into texas, along i-10 in the afternoon, could be some severe storms, even the i-40 corridor. as we head into sunday morning the rain stretches into chicago, detroit, pittsburgh, d.c. and charlotte, and by the way, 1 to 2 inches of rain not out of the question for these areas. it could be a little sloppy on su io new rk city, even boston, and by sunday evening it's moving into the northeast and really new england. it pushes out just in time for that monday morning commute. back to you. now to new details emerging in that deadly walmart shooting, we're learning more about the youngest victim as the city of chesapeake, virginia, prepares to take action to help the community recover.

abc's jay o'brien joins us with the latest. >> reporter: that youngest victim just 16 years old as the chesapeake community plans memorials for the six killed inside that walmart and investigators released new details about the alleged gunman and what he wrote before the attack. this morning, authorities identifying 16-year-old fernando chavez-barron, the sixth and youngest victim of the shooting at a virginia walmart two days before thanksgiving. >> fernando is my friend. best friend. he was intelligent, he was a soccer friend. fernando was like any other kid in the community. >> reporter: the teenager's family holding a memorial in his memory as the chesapeake community plans a candlelight vigil for monday honoring him and the five other victims. lorenzo gamble, brian pendleton,

kellie pyle. the city of chesapeake confirming the existence of what suspected gunman andre bing titled a death note, in the message found on his phone, the walmart manager complained about his colleagues and referred to murder. police also confirming the gunman legally purchased the pistol he used in the attack just hours before the rampage, finding a box for the gun and receipt in his home alongside ammunition. the gunman dying at the scene of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. witnesses telling abc news the gunman appeared to be targeting specific employees. opening firing at a staff meeting at the start of the overnight shift. >> he knew when we were in the break room, 10:00 every night. >> reporter: seven people were also injured in this shooting, at least one remains in critical condition this morning. whit. >> all right, jay o'brien, thanks so much. now to china where people are emptying store shelves not because of holidays but over

fears of lockdowns as beijing orders faster construction of covid-19 quarantine centers. and field hospitals. lama hasan has the latest on the rush at supermarkets and the growing protests. good morning, lama. >> reporter: good morning to you, eva, the frustration and the anger growing by the day, overnight huge protests erupting a day after a fire engulfed an apartment block, trapping its residents. dramatic video showing demonstrators pushing through barriers and shouting for an end to the covid lockdown, residents there have been locked down since august because they believe that the strict covid restrictions made it difficult for the residents to escape the fire and for firefighters to get through which is a claim officials deny. hours after the protest officials said they'll begin easing that lockdown today, china is now battling to control an outbreak of covid-19. several major cities including the capital beijing recording their highest number of cases

for the third consecutive day, that's the highest number of infections since the pandemic began and, remember, china has been trying to enforce strict quarantine measures and a zero covid policy for the last three years, the latest round of restrictions are causing people to panic buy in some districts. something that hasn't happened for months. janai. >> thank you for that update. back here at home, early voting gets under way in georgia in the much anticipated senate runoff between raphael warnock and herschel walker. maryalice parks has been following this. >> reporter: some big crucial counties right in atlanta area, voters will have the choice to head to the polls starting today. this is the last big cliffhanger in this election season. democratic senator warnock is trying to keep his seat, he's

facing that challenge from republican herschel walker, but there has been this real battle over voting, over the options that voters would have in this runoff race, democrats fought to keep the polls open today to have this special saturday voting. they wanted to give voters as many options as possible, as many days as possible to vote. republicans went to court multiple times to try to forbid saturday voting but ultimately they lost. so in 27 counties today, voters will have the option to go and vote and starting on monday, voters all across the state will have the option to go in and vote early in person if they choose up ahead of that december 6th runoff date. now, remember, democrats have already secured enough votes to keep control of the senate, this race will not change that, but if democratic senator raphael warnock does win and give democrats a 51st vote, it could make it a lot easier for

democrats to get their way in committees and potentially conduct investigations. whit. >> maryalice, thank you. a pair of new york police officers jumped into action to save a man who fallen on to subway tracks, body cam footage shows them running into the subway station, a good samaritan already on the tracks, the officers then jump in while they say they could hear people on the platform warning them they had just two minutes before the next train arrived. together they brought the man to safety and all made it back on to the platform just before that train pulled into the station. time now for a check of the weather and danielle breezy, how is it looking out there, danielle? tell you what, guys, it's cold this morning in nashville and we're tracking winter weather in parts of west texas and new mexico. take a look at this video here, this is the snow covering new mexico here, where they got a half a foot of snow, and by the way it's still snowing in those

♪ what a feeling ♪ welcome back to "gma." the entertainment world has lost one of its brightest stars oscar and grammy award winning singer, songwriter and actress, irene cara has died. she starred and sang the title track to the musical "fame." in 1984 it was the title track she sang for "flashdance" that garnered her an oscar and a grammy. throughout the years, cara continued acting and singing on the small screen, her publicist says she died at her florida home, she

was 63. a look at some of the other big stories we're following this morning, happening right now, record holiday shopping. more than half of the entire u.s. population is expected to shop over the holiday weekend l yber monday, and thlln americans willtill be huntin shoppers already spent a record-breaking $5.29 billion online on thanksgiving day. >> also right now, the pentagon condemning an attack on u.s. military base in syria, officials say two rockets were fired at the base on friday evening, a third rocket was found unfired, fortunately there were no injuries or damage to the base. and the canadian mounties had to step in when about 20 ostriches escaped from their enclosures and took to the streets in southern alberta. the animals' owner was riding in one of the cars. can be seen trying to grab one

of the animals to stop it. most of the animals have been recovered but there are actually a few that are out. >> oh, my goodness. and we do start this half-hour with mexican authorities pursuing their case against an american woman of killing an acquaintance at a luxury resort. they're looking to extradite the system for charges. abc's zohreen shah joins us with more on that as that woman still hasn't been named. zohreen, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, janai, a 25-year-old went down to mexico with some friends to celebrate someone's birthday and just one day into that vacation she turned up dead and now officials have another big problem on their hands, their prime suspect is no longer in the country. this morning, a potential legal limbo as mexican prosecutors seek to extradite an acquaintance of shanquella robinson, the north carolina woman found dead while vacationing in mexico. authorities are not currently

naming her but says she's a direct aggressor against the 25-year-old after a individual joe online, too violent to show, shows robinson assaulted in her hotel room. mexican authorities issuing a warrant for that acquaintance for the crime of femi ccide. >> on the one hand the u.s. government is going to take this seriously, and on the other hand it's not obligated to turn her over. >> reporter: on october 29th, local police reports state that a town guest told medical staff around 2:00 in the afternoon that robinson had drunk a lot of alcohol, a doctor determining she was stable but dehydrated, adding robinson's acquaintances refused to send her to the hospital. the police report stating the charlotte native went into cardiac arrest. declared dead by 6:00 p.m. but an autopsy differing from that report, stating medical officials arrived before 3:00 p.m. and robinson declared dead from a severe spinal cord

injury. robinson's family wants answers. >> i'm just waiting on that day until someone can be arrested, that's all i'm waiting on. >> reporter: as for those contradictions dan abrams says that can happen when you have different officials looking into the same case. that can be problematic for prosecutors. janai. >> still so man unanswered questions. zohreen, thank you. now to a remarkable rescue, the cruise ship passenger who went overboard, lucky to be alive this morning, treading water for some 15 hours before he was finally air lifted to safety. this morning, a shocking rescue caught on camera after a 28-year-old cruise ship passenger fell overboard, the man's head seen here barely bobbing above the water battered by the waves frantically waving his arms in hopes of being spotted. >> the rescue swimmer deployed and was able to lift the individual into the aircraft. >> reporter: the coast guard rescuing the man found responsive after hours in the

water and now in stable condition. >> he could have fallen into the gulf of mexico at 11:00 p.m. and been in the water for almost 22 hours. to be out in the middle of the ocean treading water for upwards of 15 hours is simply incredible. >> reporter: the circumstances around the fall still unclear, the carnival cruise ship valor first alerting the coast guard of a possible man overboard at 2:30 p.m. after his sister alerted the ship that he didn't return to his room the night before. >> at that point, the coast guard, you know, entered the distressed phase and began using our resources. >> reporter: finding the man was no small feat. >> when you look at it in square nautical miles, there was a potential of over 7,000 miles of ocean we had to search which is roughly the same size of massachusetts. >> spotted by a bulk carrier. >> if not for the crew members
