>> this year it feels like there are a lot of shoppers out. anchor: next on abc seven news, look at the first weekend of holiday shopping. we find out if people feel safe shopping in union square and get an early indication about how sales are going. deadly gunfire. police killed a man in fairfield. details about what led up to the shooting and more toilet trouble for san francisco. the issue with the newest free public bathroom. abc7news is next. >> building a better bay area, moving forward and finding solutions. anchor: our concerns about crime keeping shoppers away from san francisco's union square this holiday season? that question is top of mind for retailers in the area.

we begin with an su affecting the economy at cash we begin with it -- we begin with an issue affecting our economy. we gauge how holiday shopping is going and whether violent robberies are making any difference? meteorologist: we talked to a lot of people today. we thought a lot -- we saw a lot of shoppers in the square today. people say they feel much safer than in years past. but some are calling for more police in the area. >> i feel like it is pretty calm. reporter: stephanie ramirez started her holiday shopping in union square and it looks like she was not alone. a san francisco cab driver says he has been taking more riders here. >> i think people are coming more this year than last year which is very good. reporter: many believe there is

more foot traffic and may be even more ice skaters in the rink compared to 2020 and 2021. >> last year i felt there was a lot of insecurity around union square. reporter: that after numerous smash and grab robberies rocked the city forcing an increase in police presence around union square. but on saturday, abc 7 first showed you this surveillance video of four people getting out of a gray sedan and robbing a camera store at gunpoint making off with nearly 180 thousand dollars in equipment. just days ago the police chief assured the public of additional safety measures in the area. >> our job is to keep you safe and make sure we are present and engaged and try to prevent people that want to do harm to the city. reporter: managers at a café on post street say they would like

to see more police here. >> more proper ways of safety. reporter: more police than there are down here already? >> certainly. reporter: ron says he feels safe this season and others should also. >> i know we had a rough time last year with all those things going on, right across the street in fact. they feel anxiety but people want to open their hearts and put a smile on their face and try to get into the spirit of things regardless of how tough things are. reporter: we saw many retailers with their own in-store private security today and some employees told us off camera that foot traffic has been steady but sales could be stronger with higher inflation costs making it tougher. anchor: not quite the crowds we have seen in past years. reporter: not as heavy as it was in years past but many say not as bad as it was last year or

the year before. things are slowly picking up. anchor: optimistic. happening now, live look at san francisco international airport with travelers on the move after the thanksgiving holiday in the air and on the roads. it is expected to be the third busiest thanksgiving travel season since aaa started tracking into thousand. sfo airlines expects today to be the busiest travel day of the year. we saw a steady line of cars dropping off passengers in front of terminal three today. it has been smooth sailing at the airport. >> i have had some doozies traveling for the holidays and for work and this has been taking. anchor: united airlines expects more than 440,000 customers to fly through sfo over the thanksgiving holiday and we just check with the four major airports in the bay area and

there are no significant problems to report. looking live at i-80 in berkeley, we are expecting to see 49 million people pack up their cars and hit the highways nationwide. experts say the busiest time to be on the road today is between 4:00 and 8:00. california highway patrol officers are on maximum enforcement through midnight. you are seeing a live stream of this all day long so you can check traffic any time all day long. you will find that livestream on our bay area app wherever you stream. solano county authorities are investigating a deadly officer-involved shooting. the incident happened around 3:00 this morning near central way in fairfield. a sheriff's deputy along with his canine responded to a call for a robbery involving an armed suspect. when the canine was sent and to

take the man into custody the suspect fired several shots. the deputy returned fire killing the suspect who has not been identified. in the east bay, gunfire on a freeway last night shut down part of interstate 80 in berkeley. around 11:30 p.m., westbound lanes of 80 near university avenue were shut down. you can see the closure in the upper left of the video. berkeley police say three cars were involved and one of them had 5-10 bullet holes in it. lanes were shut down for more than an hour. there were also reports of sideshow activity in the area. no injuries reported. happening tonight people will gather for a vigil in san francisco do mark 44 years since the assassination of lgbtq+ activist and politician harvey milk. the san francisco mayor and gay rights allies george guess goni.

operation at imperial beach. nine suspected undocumented immigrants were pulled from the ocean and two died at the shoreline. border patrol says a 10th person is believed to be missing in the water. it group of kayakers is saved tonight after a water rescue in marin county this weekend. >> can you hang tight. i will get you guys out. j.r.: very tense moments. the marin county fire department requested the sonoma county sheriffs helicopter to poll the kayakers to safety yesterday. a bystander says the four kayakers were being swept out to sea and rough in a remote part of the bay. two adults and two children were rescued and flown to safety. new details tonight in san francisco new high-tech bathroom kiosk do future of public toilets as now closed for

repairs. the closure comes less than a week after the new sleek public restroom was unveiled last wednesday. the bathroom broke down on friday and reports technicians are now working to get the kiosk back up and running. a media company has agreed to pay for the public toilets and maintain them in exchange for allowing them to install advertising kiosks in the downtown area. 25 of them will be operational throughout the city in the next 4-5 years. whole foods is taking lobster off the menu. the high-end grocery giant says it will stop selling maine's biggest export at hundreds of stores across america. whole foods representatives say lobster fishing is no longer considered sustainable because of declining populations. environmental groups also worry that lobster traps are hazards to whales. maine's governor says whole foods is following misguided mr

hosting the first-ever abc cookout today. abc is short for asian and black communities. in an effort to unite the culture is by celebrating their respective food and more. >> we are bringing together two great communities to build real elation ships and have real conversations and address real problems that face both of our communities. we have so many things that have happened in our community, food, our community and kids so we put this event together to bring the communities together in solidarity. j.r.: that looks like a fun event. the first few hundred kids got to eat free courtesy of food trucks and vendors taking part in today's celebration. we are joined right now by spencer christian. all of the hazy weather outside and now there is talk of cold weather. spencer: it is going to turn quite cold not so much tomorrow

but tuesday and wednesday mornings it will be really cold and rain coming our way as well. right now, the 24 hour temperature change indicates it is quite a bit chillier across the region and it was this time last night. five degrees cooler in fairfield and santa rosa. take a look along the embarcadero towards the bay bridge and the current temperature readings are 53 in san francisco and mid 50's in oakland and palo alto. 60 and san jose our warm spots. you show this traffic jam earlier in the berkeley area and it is still jammed up as people are returning home from the holiday weekend. 59 in santa rosa. napa 50 five. upper 50's in fairfield and livermore. one more live look looking across the tranquil waters of the bay. mostly clear overnight with a few high clouds.

greasy and cooler tomorrow. cold and frosty mornings tuesday and wednesday. rain arrives thursday and friday. we could have a string of wet days beginning thursday. overnight, mainly clear skies with high clouds. up her 30's in santa rosa. low to mid 40's mainly. tomorrow's highs will range from 56 and half moon bay to about 60 in san francisco. look at the bait shoreline, temperatures not getting above 61 in most locations and even inland, we topped out at 62 for the most part. airfield could hit 64. let's talk about the approaching storm. it brings one on the storm impact scale. thursday and friday, periods of showers. here is the forecast starting late tonight. a cold front dropping into our area what we can unfollow part overnight and going into monday.

tuesday we will get cold air behind the front bringing us a chill on tuesday and wednesday. a more vigorous and stronger front swoops in early thursday morning bringing us rain for sure and snow to the sierra. that continues into friday before it breaks out when it will be followed by a second wave of rain coming saturday into sunday. let's look at the accuweather 7 a forecast. cold mornings tuesday and wednesday. afternoons and evenings will also be pretty chilly. it gets cooler in the daytime's on thursday and friday with the approaching storm and the rain. it looks like we could have four consecutive days of periods of rain and showers thursday through next sunday. much needed rainfall. j.r.: i think the ski rubber -- i think the ski resorts are happy with that forecast. a thumbs up. spencer: there will be snow in the sierra. j.r.: big day as we turned a sports.
