we begin with an issue affecting both the economy and our safety. abc7news reporter cornell barnard spent the day in union square to gauge how the holiday shopping is going. a lot of questions with last year's robberies and again earlier this week. reporter: we saw a lot of shoppers in union square today. many say they feel safer than in years past. holiday thieves are still at work and some are calling for more police in the area. >> i feel like it is pretty calm. reporter: stephanie ramirez started her holiday shopping in union square and she was not alone. a san francisco cabdriver said he has been taking more riders here. >> more people are coming this year than last year. which is really good. reporter: many believe there is

more foot traffic and more ice skaters at the rink compared to 20 20 and 2021. >> last year i felt like there was a lot of insecurity around union square. reporter: after numerous brazen robberies targeting high-end retailers rocked the city in 2021 forcing an increase in police presence around union square but on saturday we first showed you this surveillance video of four people getting out of a gray sudan -- gray sedan near union square and robbing a camera shop. days ago, the police chief william scott assured the people of additional safety measures. >> our job is to keep people safe and to make sure we are engaged and try to prevent people who want to do harm to the city. reporter: managers at a café on post street say they would like

live look at san francisco international airport with travelers on the move after the thanksgiving holiday in the air and on the roads. it is expected to be the third busiest thanksgiving travel season since aaa started tracking into thousand. at sfo, airlines expect today to be the busiest travel day of the year. we saw a steady line of cars dropping passengers off in front of terminal three today. it has been smooth sailing according to flyers we spoke with. >> i have had doozies when i have tried to travel over the holidays and this has been pretty tame. j.r.: united airlines expects more than 440,000 customers to fly through as fo over the thanksgiving holiday. we just checked the four major airports in the bay area and there are no significant problems to report. looking live at i-80 in

berkeley, we are expecting to see 49 million people pack up their cars and hit the highways nationwide. you can see some of their traffic on the screen. experts say the busiest time to be on the road is between 4:00 and eight :00. chp officers are on maximum enforcement patrol through midnight. we have been livestreaming this camera all day long so you can check traffic anytime. we'll find that livestream on our bay area app available wherever you stream. solano county authorities are investigating a deadly involved -- a deadly officer-involved shooting your central way and pittman road in fairfield. a sheriff's deputy along with his canine responded to a call about a robbery involving an armed suspect. investigators say when the canine was sent in to take the man into custody, the suspect fired several shots and the deputy returned fire killing the suspect who has not been identified.

in the east bay, gunfire on a freeway last night shut down parts of interstate 80 in berkeley around 11:30 p.m. westbound lanes of 80 near university avenue were shut down and you can see the closure there in the upper left in this video. cars just sitting there. berkeley police say three cars were involved and one of them had 5-10 ola holes in it and lanes were shut down for over an hour. there were reports of sideshow activity and the area but no injuries were reported. happening tonight, people will gather for a vigil in san francisco to mark 44 years since the assassination of lgbtq+ activist and politician harvey milk and san francisco mayor and gay rights ally george gus goni. both were shot and killed on this day at city hall in 1978. the vigil will also pay big -- pay tribute to the victims at the recent shooting at club q in

kayakers is saved tonight after a water rescue in orange county's bay this weekend -- in marin county's bay this weekend. the fire department requested the sonoma county sureos helicopter to help all the kayakers to safety yesterday. a bystander says the four kayakers were being swept out to sea in rough surf. two adults and two children were rescued and flown to safety. new details tonight, san francisco's new high-tech bathroom kiosk dubbed the future of public toilets is now closed for repairs. the closure comes less than a week after the new sleep public restroom was unveiled last wednesday. sfs says the bathroom broke down on friday and reports technicians are working to get the kiosk back up and running.

bridge. here our forecast features. mostly clear skies overnight. breezy and kohler tomorrow. andy and wednesday. rain arrives thursday and friday. look at the overnight conditions, mainly clear skies with a few high clouds. upper 30's in some north bay locations. most locations though will have lows in the low to mid 40's. highs tomorrow under mainly sunny skies with high clouds. 56 half moon bay. the bay shoreline and inland we will see many locations warming about 61 or 62 degrees. that is a part tomorrow's highs. let's look at the approaching storm. bringing in the abc 7 storm impact scale. one. periods of rain tapering off to showers at times and breezy. here is our forecast

intermission, starting late tonight, let's see if we can get that going. i think my computer may be frozen. there it is. starting wednesday night you will see it bringing cold air but no rainfall. a more powerful front bringing in some scattered and heavy downpours. snow in the sierra. that storm will taper off on friday followed by a second wave of rain late saturday into sunday. let's look at the accuweather 7 day forecast. tuesday and wednesday, frosty mornings giving way to cooler daytime weather on thursday and friday. a lot of clouds and rain. it could be quite heavy at times on thursday. later on friday. next wave on saturday and it tapers off on sunday. >> abc 7 sports with chris alvarez. chris: the 49ers have hit their
