good morning, ginger. >> good morning to you. it will be torn tuesday. but before we get there up to 7 inches of snow falling in snoqualmie pass, up to 2 feet of snow, then the rockies down to the mexican border have high wind alerts. we're talking gusts up to 60 miles per hour, and more snow alerts all the way to wisconsin. this region where we see this warm front lift through tomorrow, mississippi, arkansas, parts of tennessee and louisiana that have not only damaging wind threats starting in the afternoon but tornadoes, they'll happen and they could be long tracked. when we say long track, that means they could be violent, on the ground sometimes for an hour or more and that's the type of tornado you don't survive if you're in a mobile home, t.j., or a vehicle. so we've got 36 hours, people can prepare now. let's head back to you. >> thank you so much, ginger, for that. we'll check in with you plenty. want to check in with gio benitez, our transportation correspondent is at laguardia airport. gio, we just heard about this dangerous threat of weather.

this weather is coming at a time when millions of americans are trying to get home. >> reporter: that's right, t.j. that rough weather causing some delays this weekend because take a look at this. on the roads, we saw traffic stalling in the northeast with millions making that return home. in the air, the weather causing hundreds of delays up and down the east coast, but despite that weather, and this is pretty shocking, a low number of cancellations. just a few dozens among the u.s. airlines as millions hit the skies on the same day together. that's a dramatic change from the travel chaos we saw over the summer. this thanksgiving saw almost as many travelers as 2019 right before the pandemic, an estimated 54.6 million this year in 2019 it was 55.3 million. so t.j., very, very close. >> and all that travel, all

these millions in the air as you just referenced, there was a scare in the air that travelers are not going to want to hear. >> reporter: that's right, and this was on a flight, a jetblue flight from new york to salt lake city, and this was a passenger who allegedly held a small blade to another passenger's throat, later charged with carrying a weapon on an aircraft and assault with a dangerous weapon. thankfully no one was hurt. this comes two weeks after a man boarded a plan with two box cutters. so t.j., many, many questions now for the tsa. >> good to hear nobody was injured there. gio, we thank you as always. whit? t.j. now to the so-called tripledemic threat and fears it could get worse following the holiday weekend. more than three-quarters of the nation's pediatric beds are now filled and urgent care centers are seeing a crush of patients. trevor ault is at a children's hospital right here in new york with more. trevor, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, whit. officials here say they've already been facing high levels of patients in the emergency department and with covid we've seen repeatedly how holiday gatherings can accelerate the spread of sickness. we could now be seeing that happening on three separate fronts.

this morning, health officials fearing the holidays may worsen the tripledemic surge of flu, rsv and covid. some hospitals and urgent cares are already facing a crush of patients. >> our book-ahead slots absolutely fill up. >> reporter: data from hhs shows nationally pediatric bed occupancy remains the highest it's been in the last two years. 78% of beds are filled. in long island, ella rose was on oxygen with rsv for nearly a week. >> it was horrendous. i hope no parent has go through it. it was terrifying. >> reporter: and the rsv threat is playing out amidst an earlier and more severe start to the flu season. the hospitalization rate, the highest for this time in the season in more than a decade. some experts warn this may just be the beginning. >> we just had massive gatherings, the busiest travel days in years and a large amount of circulating viruses all over the country. >> reporter: this comes as new concerns that common flu medications like tamiflu are in

high demand. >> we're seeing shortages in some areas of supplies of common antibiotics like amoxicillin as well as tamiflu and some other medicines as well. >> reporter: johnson & johnson which makes brand name children's tylenol says there's been high demand but, quote, we're not experiencing an overall shortage. several senators are now calling for immediate action to try to resolve that shortage of oral amoxicillin. doctors are stressing you should call your pediatrician if your child is ill. e.r. visits are for the most serious adverse symptoms like shortness of breath. amy? >> trevor, thank you for that. overseas now and unrest sweeping across china as citizens rise up in mass protests against severe covid restrictions. some are now calling for china's president to step down. maggie rulli has the story. maggie, this is unprecedented. >> reporter: yeah, amy, exactly. these are on a nationwide scale that we haven't seen for decades and some now even calling for the chinese leader to step down.

this morning, the biggest wave of unrest to hit mainland china in decades is ripping across the country. fed up with the government's strict zero covid policies thousands have taken to the streets from shanghai to beijing, and at dozens of universities across the country. [ crowd chanting ] shouting we want democratic rule of law, we want freedom of speech. many holding up blank pieces of paper, the symbol of the growing movement designed to avoid arrests and call out censorship as they protest the lockdowns. and some in shanghai calling for the country's president xi jinping to step down. a rare and brazen act of public defiance against the communist government, not seen across china since the days of the protests in 1989. the protests triggered by a

deadly apartment building fire last week killing ten. many blaming the covid restrictions for the fire department's slow response time, something the chinese government denies. this morning, a cruise ship passenger is lucky to be alive after falling overboard, spending nearly 15 hours lost at sea. that's him treading water without a life jacket moments before being rescued. >> it's a testament to his will to live. to be out in the middle of ocean treading water for upwards of 15 hours is simply incredible. >> reporter: the 28-year-old man traveling over thanksgiving with his family on the carnival "valor" cruise ship on his way to cozumel, mexico. he was last seen around 11:00 p.m. wednesday. his sister alerted the crews thursday that he never returned to his room. >> they had drained the pool on the main deck. >> reporter: whitney, also on board, telling us the ship started searching for the missing passenger. >> they really started to make announcements, they were asking for him to report back to guest services. every 15, 20 minutes. people started to notice. >> reporter: carnival immediately flagging the u.s.

coast guard. >> at that point the coast guard began marshaling more resources in an attempt to get them on scene as soon as possible. >> reporter: searching the valor retracing its route to support. >> a potential of 7,000 miles of ocean we had to search, roughly the same size as massachusetts. we launched a coast guard helicopter out of new orleans. a 45-foot response boat out of station venice and one of our fixed wing airplanes out of mobile. >> reporter: nearly six hours later, approximately 20 miles south of southwest pass louisiana a bulk carrier in the search spotted him. >> if not for the alert for the crew members onboard the motor vessel who saw him and vectored in the helicopter it could be a very different story. >> reporter: after being hoisted out of the water the coast guard said he was showing signs of hypothermia. he was taken to the hospital. at last check he's in stable condition.

guys, he's lucky to be alive. >> certainly is. >> 15 hours of treading water, can't imagine that. now to the shocking unsolved murders of those four university of idaho students as their classmates return to campus with a heavy police presence there. the killer still on the loose. kayna whitworth has the latest on all of this. good morning, kayna. >> reporter: so authorities they're starting to get results back from the state crime lab, broaden their investigation but still as those kids go back to school they have no suspect and no murder weapon. this morning, concern and worry escalating in this tight-knit idaho town. police reporting an influx of 911 calls telling abc news overnight, we understand there's a sense of fear within our community. >> i think it's important for everybody to come back to campus, but also i understand the fear. >> reporter: this, as college students return to campus where over two weeks ago four students were found brutally stabbed to death in their off-campus home. this student who lives just down

the street from where the gruesome murders took place, packing his things and heading home with his father. >> it's just an eerie feeling. moscow doesn't feel the same right now. >> reporter: the university now offering remote learning. asking police to enhance their security on presence on campus. police maintaining this was a targeted attack, saying. they have collected nearly 500 online tip submissions since the fbi link was published last week. steve goncalves, father of 21-year-old kaylee goncalves telling abc news he's appreciate of the police, but frustrated by the few details they're choosing to release to the public. >> i'm frustrated because there's a lot we're holding and i'm not the only one holding information. my main request is for the police officers is just to do everything you possibly can. >> reporter: police also addressing similarities between the case and two other unsolved stabbings. including a 1999 double stabbing

in pullman, washington, less than ten miles away, and just last year, a couple stabbed in their beds at 3:00 a.m. while they slept. the attack happening at nearby salem, oregon, and despite the woman surviving, the case remains unsolved. >> i think we're looking at every avenue. >> reporter: in a statement the police saying, there does not appear to be any evidence supporting the cases are related. grieving and determined, kaylee's father is working to keep the spotlight on this case to find the killer. >> i have to get justice. it's the only thing i can do. i owe that to my daughter. >> reporter: now authorities tell me they understand these legitimate concerns from these families. adding that their top concern is of course, bringing them justice. you guys, amid so many swirling questions, they're planning a candlelight vigil to honor the victims. >> it's such a frightening situation there right now. kayna, thank you. we're turning now to a delicate rescue operation overnight. how delicate? it was a small plane that

crashed and it was tangled in high-tension power lines. our gio benitez is back with how first responders saved the pilot and passengers. they were trapped in the air for a bit. >> reporter: t.j., this was an incredibly dangerous operation. the single-engine plane was flying from new york to maryland and it crashed just a mile away from the airport. this morning, a race against the clock for a harrowing rescue in gaithersburg, maryland. emergency personnel scrambling to reach a pilot and a passenger, the two stranded a hundred feet in the air, the small plane first smashing into a transmission tower before coming to rest in these high-tension power lines. >> at 12:25 the first patient was coming out of the aircraft and coming down to the ground. the second patient was out and coming down at 12:36. >> reporter: the pilot and passenger able to talk to rescuers. >> we're still in regular contact with the folks in the

the investigation into the death of an american tourist, shanquella robinson. it happened in mexico, and an arrest warrant has been issued this morning. this morning there are new questions about how will that work across borders. matt rivers has more from mexico city. good morning, matt. >> reporter: shanquella robinson went to mexico looking for a fun birthday celebration, but officials say the 25-year-old american woman was killed by an acquaintance. now they want to prosecute that suspect right here in mexico. this morning, mexican authorities say they believe 25-year-old u.s. citizen shanquella robinson was killed by an acquaintance, another american woman, on vacation in los cabos. robinson was found dead at a luxury resort in late october, traveling with a group of friend whose actions immediately became suspicious. in one now viral video too violent to show robinson is seen being severely beaten. at least two people in the room watch and record the incident. in another one, someone films robinson taking a nap the day before she was killed.

a police report from the day she died said guests at the resort called for medical help, claiming she had "drunk a lot of alcohol." doctor said she was, quote, stable but dehydrated adding the guest refused to bring her to a hospital. the police report said she went into cardiac arrest and was declared dead at 6:00 p.m., but an autopsy obtained by abc news contradicted that report saying she was declared dead three hours earlier suffering from a severe spinal cord injury and a dislocated neck. >> they attacked her and there was nothing she could do but say no. >> reporter: mexican authorities saying the prime suspect in the case back in the united states. >> the fact that the person accused is an american citizen fundamentally changes all of the evaluation here. >> reporter: mexican prosecutors filing charges for femicide which means they believe she was killed, in part, because of her gender. mexico is asking the u.s. to extradite the suspect to face
