santa rosa. we see low temperatures in the mid and upper 30's just about everywhere except on the shoreline and coast. let's talk about rainfall the first storm will come in thursday bringing sometimes steady heading -- heavy rain. higher totals in higher elevations could be up to one half inch. it will start pushing into the northern most part of the area tonight. by thursday getting soaked with period of rainfall and snow in the sierra. some snow may fall in the highest of the bay area. later in the day on thursday going into friday morning, we will see the rain taper off with a shower or two friday morning. not much happening there but a second storm is coming in over the weekend. i will have a complete seven-day forecast a little bit later.

un-housed people living on the streets in marin county alone. >> we give out raincoats and ponchos and tents for people to be able to stay out of the elements. >> storms are also in the forecast later this week. last year, an atmospheric river left parts of downtown underwater. >> most of us are praying for rain for the environment but it is difficult for the on homed needing shelter. >> officials hope the approaching storms uproot -- improve the drought issue. drinking water at its lowest level in history at 40% capacity. >> it is low and with a lot of conservation efforts we can make the water last the next year but it is an uncomfortable place to be. >> the water agency asked people to turn off outdoor irrigation

and only run your dishwasher when it is full. and in the meantime they are working to protect those out here in the streets to keep them safe from the elements. we are live -- abc 7 news a. >> a flareup at a refinery sending ash onto neighborhoods. they are offering free car washes to those affected by the fallout. we are live with the latest. leslie? >> super busy here today in martinez at the carwash along out camera avenue. for those that had a martinez id and ash on their car, but what exactly was in the white dust remains a mystery. while many martinez residents were happy to get a free carwash, there is still a lot of concern about the mysterious white ash that fell

from the sky. >> there was a flareup at the martinez refinery the district responded to seven complaints from the public. >> they consulted with officials from martinez refining company on? boulevard and launched a formal investigation as the ash fell on those yards and cars. >> it was more like a white color a heavy dust and it was thick especially on the windows. >> it was coding your car? >> yes not thick because i was not there long enough but i went home and try to get it off and it would not come off with water. >> they say it should wash off with water-based a it is catalyst dust with clay and other minerals in it. they say it is natural occurring materials considered non-toxic and nonhazardous and pose no health risks. health services

say they are unsure of health impacts so far but ask anyone with respiratory issues as a result of the dust to contact their doctor. >> we had a guy from the oil refinery come in and make a big purchase. he bought quite a few carwashes to take care of the community. >> what about on my roof and around my deck what will you guys do about that? >> ma martinez refinery ask those that are having trouble removing the dust to contact them. they will have an analysis of what was in the dust by wednesday. >> we anticipate there will be violations issued once our investigation is complete. >> there should be more information with the lab analysis and company report that will be issued tomorrow. that should give us more clear-cut

63 in fairfield. on we go to our forecast headlines, we have very cold nights and mornings coming our way tomorrow and wednesday. the rain arrives thursday and continues friday morning. another storm develops over the weekend. tonight, low temperatures drop into the low 20's. 30 degrees tonight in santa rosa. we see numerous readings in the 30's across the bay area except on the shoreline and coast. tomorrow, mainly sunny skies with clouds we see high temperatures on the coast in the mid-50's only into the upper 50's around the base shoreline. and upper 50's tube in your 60's in the mountainous region. it will be a chilly day. let's talk about the approaching storm it ranks one on the abc 7 exclusive storm impact scale.

it will be breezy at times with rainfall totals ranging from one inch to -- .5 inches to one inch. by thursday, the entire area will be blanketed with period of rain and showers and higher elevations in the north may see some snow. but the heavier snow will fall in the sierra. the storm will continue pushing through thursday night before tapering off friday morning. a clearing and dry on friday by the second storm comes in over the weekend. that will give us more rainfall. let's take a look at the accuweather seven-day forecast. just a reminder cold morning tomorrow and wednesday. then we have a storm coming in thursday it will be a wet day. friday we may see some sunshine after a shower or two friday morning. and saturday the next storm comes in that also ranks one on the abc 7 storm impact scale. showers will linger into

moving forward, finding solutions, this is abc 7 news. >> to concerns about the increase in flu cases, it is happening in the bay area and across the country. >> we spoke with specialist about why influenza is leading. >> doctors are seeing covid and rsv cases but they highlight how fast flu cases are increasing. according to the cdc in -- 16 states including california have high levels of flulike activity. as covid, rsv and flu cases are surging throughout the country -- our specialist says that influenza cases have reached a concerning point. >> little severe covid, but the flu is coming up and it is raging unfortunately. >> throughout the pandemic this dr. track data from europe to

get a head start up what the u.s. could see in the coming weeks and she is doing the same with this surge. >> in australia we saw this in our summer, they are winter over our summer season they had high rates of influenza. in the u.k. it is a herald for what happens here there are high rates of influenza in icu. and higher rates of influenza mortality than covid. >> and we spoke with specialist in san francisco to see what they are seeing first hand. they say flu cases are fluctuating. >> there are days where we see flu more than anything else and then we may see covid the next day. we have a risk of rsv for kid. we are at capacity in the sense that we are full and having to hold patients in the emergency department to get admitted upstairs but we have additional capacity to manage this. >> they say they are also at

capacity but not overwhelm. today they had more covid cases. >> but we see some flu starting to increase. i think we will see as the trend continues, if were going to see a huge spike in flu versus a huge hike in covid and hopefully not both. >> the cdc is reporting more influenza cases early in the season than they have the last five seasons but what is leading this? >> it's probably viral interference happened as covid comes down our immunity comes up to covid the upper viruses come in to fill this vacuum. we see a lot of influenza and rsv. >> all three doctors agreed that what is different about influenza this time around is that it in january and february but we are seeing an increase in cases in november. they are urging the public to get a flu shot before visiting family in the upcoming weeks.

abc 7 news. >> and we just had a family gathering the last few days which increases the risk. joining us now is abc news special contributor dr. low teller. i hope you had a great thanksgiving. >> i did i hope you and your family did as well. there are so many gatherings that took lace. and travel seat -- place. i >> health experts are worried about this. as we just heard, the health care system is strained under the threat of a triple pandemic with covid-19, and the flu, and rsv. is enough being done to keep people healthy this season? >> nothing is being -- there's not enough being done when it comes to the health sector in the country. this happened multiple times. it was addressed multiple times in the covid pandemic but not in

respect to rsv hospitals are overrun and there is no help in sight for that. but awareness campaigns are spreading and people know what to do to keep themselves safe. >> we have to keep spreading the word and raising awareness as best we can realizing it is still with us. especially with the rising rates of children hospitalized with rsv higher than it has been in years. you are a pediatrician what have you seen in your practice? >> i am seeing that. multiple children's hospitals in the bay area across the country -- sometimes they are waiting several hours i heard one waiting for 30 hours. icus are full everywhere as well. pediatricians are sounding the alarm right now of how bad rsv is. hopefully it will plateau and decrease but the situation is bad right now. >> we talked about rsv, what

about the new variant of covid that the cdc is tracking? what is happening with that? >> i'm assuming you are referring to xvbb which is a combination of two omicron variant's and it is moderating pretty quickly 3% of cases being represented by it right now. they say there is no data to suggest this variant is more dangerous than what we have previously dealt with. but it is important to know these variants could pop up and there unknowns in our future with covid-19 make sure you are updated with your shots and roosters. -- boosters. >> covid-19 seems to be coming back strongly there is a push to get vaccinated are people hesitant to get the flu shot? i talked to people who had the covid vaccine and a booster or two they are weary of roosters

and skeptical at this point unfortunately, understandably, but unfortunately. is that being transferred to people how -- how people feel about the flu shot? >> unfortunately, we are seeing a decreased influx of people getting the flu shot compared to a few years ago several million less people have gotten their flu shot this season. and it's turning out to be one of the worst flu seasons we've seen and several years some predict in 10 years. this is an alarm saying we need to be sure about our vaccine information because i worried miss information about covid-19 has migrated into influenza and people are more hesitant about getting the flu shot than they were before. it's important to remind people influenza hospitalize is thousands of people each year and killing thousands of people across the country and worldwide. it is crucial for people to get their flu shot if

we have kris and spencer with us and air travel is back. the tsa's says it's three more than 2.5 million people just yesterday. it beat the record over 2.4 million set on july 1. as the travel industry bounces back room global shutdowns. yeah the middle seat is always filled now. >> that is true. i've been flying quite a bit and the flights are always full now. for most of this year bay seemed to be full, so i guess that is a good thing. >> are you avoiding the flying if you can for the holidays? >> actually i will fly for the holidays and i got my tsa pre-check which i am excited about. the holiday lines are crazy regardless do you guys have that by the way? i'm curious. >> yes it works well.

but what is to running -- stunning is the prices they are charging that is shocking. if you fly frontier airlines take note the carrier is doing away with customer service over the phone. the airline has transitioned to fully digital communications. customers have an option of an online chat box and social media channels or whatsapp. they made the change because most of the customers prefer to communicate online. i do not believe that for one second. they are doing it because it is cheaper. those chat boxes are a disaster every time a try those things. >> i totally agree i never get anywhere with the chat box. i do not think customers will be happy with that at all. >> what customer says they don't want to talk to a real person. i just do not believe it. >> it is not their fault they are just taking the call generally, but in the cap bot it

take what i put under my seat at the ballgame i take it and throw it out it cost you nothing to clean up a little bit after you go to a concert or festival the next day it looks like there was a right --riot. >> i agree the whole world should behave the way the japanese are behaving. every once in a while i will see something in the hallway on the floor and pick it up and did it in the trash and i've had people give me range looks for cleaning up. >> i do the same thing. at sporting events i am always surprised that people leave a mess behind. >> it is amazing the stuff accumulates and the cleaning crew how quickly they can turn it around and make it spotless -- they say all of the careening -- cleaning crews at the stadiums do a great job it is a credit to them but they do so much work. >> it is not have to be hard if
