>> a little bit. i think that's probably why george isn't here. he went hard watching the game yesterday, robin. >> wow, this worked out exactly how it had to. couldn't have a draw. got the win and moving on. >> i was breathing into a paper bag in the second half. there was a lot to take in. very exciting, and we cannot wait to hear from team captain tyler adams coming up. >> looking forward to that. we have to begin, talking about the severe weather, that potential outbreak and did happen. that is still on the move this morning. overnight more than two dozen tornadoes touched down in the south and that is where we find our rob marciano in jackson, mississippi. rob, good morning. >> reporter: hey, good morning, t.j. the sun now coming up in jackson, mississippi. it's been a very difficult year here at the capital of this state on many levels. we're grateful we were spared the worst of the event. it was a terrorizing 12 hours or so in mississippi and across the south as the severe weather outbreak took place. overnight, tornadoes, torrential rain and damaging winds taking aim across the south.

in mississippi, louisiana, and alabama, at least 21 tornadoes reported. that number expected to rise. the national weather service calling it a particularly dangerous situation. extreme winds made for perilous driving conditions with dangerous lightning illuminating in the sky as a tornado ripped the steeple off this church. in louisiana four people seriously injured after a twister tore through the caldwell parish area. two people had to be rescued from under debris. residents coming together with flashlights searching for anyone who may be trapped in the rubble. the sheriff's department says multiple homes have been completely destroyed. this morning, dozens of residents left without power. slick and dangerous conditions in minnesota after snow left roads coated in powder. the twin cities getting over eight inches of snow. the snowstorm causing the airport there to close temporarily. over 18 inches of snow falling in utah. multiple wrecks after drivers moved too quickly through the icy streets. this police suv getting slammed into while responding to an

accident. >> there's been a number of people that have slid off the road and, you know, maybe some that are just going too fast for conditions. >> reporter: this is a two-side id system with more snow and wind coming for the north and more severe storms here in the south as the sprawling system pushes east. t.j.? >> wow, this thing is not over yet. rob, we thank you as always. robin? >> it's not over. we turn to ginger with where the storm danger is moving next. good morning, ginger. >> good morning, robin. the outbreak is happening as we speak. there is a tornado watch that just moved east of mobile, alabama, pensacola, panama city, dothan all in the region that will get hit within minutes if not within the hour so still a couple hours left as this sags to the south. it will lose steam through tallahassee and southeast georgia, but this region in the next couple of hours if you can delay travel or stay away from any of the thunderstorms and certainly if you get a tornado

warning which we've seen popping all morning you do not want to be outdoors but in your shelter. a look at where that goes. thunderstorms all the way up through north carolina but it's the heavy rain here in the north with the wind, robin, boston, new york, the airports all throughout connecticut up to burlington, vermont, could see gusts up to 60 miles per hour from a south wind to a west, windy day. >> yeah, bracing for it. thank you so much, ginger. whit? to washington now and the race to avert a national rail strike. congress is moving to impose a settlement on the unions after president biden warned that a rail shutdown would devastate the economy. our congressional correspondent rachel scott is on capitol hill with the latest. rachel, good morning. >> reporter: whit, good morning. with just days to go, this is down to the wire. a nationwide rail strike would be catastrophic. we're talking about a devastating blow to the economy. by one estimate this could cost consumers and businesses up to $2 billion a day. not to mention that it would freeze rail lines for approximately 7 million

travelers and commuters. this is exactly why president biden has asked congress to step in to help avoid a rail strike. he summoned congressional leaders to the white house, and they want to move quickly. in a few hours the house is expected to take up legislation that would impose a tentative agreement that president biden and his administration helped negotiate back in september. it does raise wages, but for some unions, it doesn't address their biggest outstanding issue which is enough paid sick time. lawmakers agree and they're scrambling to try and pass another bill that would address some of those concerns and there is growing bipartisan support for that. whit? >> rachel, another striking moment of bipartisanship, the senate last night passing a bill on same-sex marriage. >> reporter: yes, whit. those moments of bipartisanship are rare here on capitol hill. 12 senate republicans did join every single democrat to pass a bill aimed at protecting same-sex and interracial marriage. this comes just months after roe versus wade was overturned. democrats hear that other rights

could be in jeopardy and it is heading back to the house where it's expected to pass later this year. whit? >> rachel scott, thank you. robin? now to the verdict in a landmark january 6th case. the founder of the far-right oath keepers militia was found guilty of seditious conspiracy. our chief justice correspondent pierre thomas is in washington with more. good morning, pierre. >> reporter: federal prosecutors convinced a jury to convict on the most serious charges involving january 6th, that u.s. citizens had committed seditious conspiracy, plotting against their own government for weeks and willing to use violence to achieve their treacherous goals. this morning, stewart rhodes, the leader of the oath keepers, yale trained attorney and former paratrooper convicted of seditious conspiracy plotting to block congress from certifying joe biden's election. during the trial prosecutors claimed when rhodes made this video after the 2020 election, his plot was already under way. >> we have men already stationed outside d.c. as a nuclear option

in case they attempt to remove the president illegally, we will step in and stop it. >> reporter: rhodes faces decades in prison along with one of his top lieutenants kelly meggs, who was also convicted of seditious conspiracy. meggs is seen in this video, part of that group of oath keepers marching in unison in tactical gear up the steps of the u.s. capitol on january 6th. according to prosecutors, rhodes and other oath keepers were planning for a violent attack if president trump had given the word. authorities showing images of this arsenal of weapons including assault rifles secretly stored at a virginia hotel just outside of washington as part of a so-called oath keeper quick reaction force. key evidence in the trial, a series of seized text messages. rhodes writing november 5th only two days after the 2020 election, quote, we aren't getting through this without a civil war and then in december texting, it will be a bloody and desperate fight. that can't be avoided. this is just so rare. it's been nearly 30 years since

the justice department has convinced a jury to convict someone of seditious conspiracy and in just a few weeks we have another trial for seditious conspiracy including leaders of the so-called proud boys who prosecutors say sparked violence on january 6th by first knocking down those barriers inciting that mob. whit? >> pierre thomas, thank you. now to the fallout from the deadly mass shooting at a walmart in virginia. one of the survivors is suing the retail giant saying she filed a complaint against the gunman two months ago and the company did nothing about it. jay o'brien joins us from chesapeake, virginia, with more on what we're learning. jay, good morning. >> reporter: whit, good morning. a week since that shooting, this memorial is growing, six crosses for the six victims, all as we're hearing from a survivor who worked inside this walmart and is now suing the company claiming the company was warned that that alleged gunman was a threat to his co-workers. this morning, an employee who survived a deadly rampage at a vrginia walmart is suing saying

she warned the company about the alleged shooter's behavior two months ago, but nothing was done. her family speaking exclusively to abc news. >> psychologically she's tormented right now. she's having a lot of sleepless nights obviously. she's had several panic attacks. >> reporter: in the $50 million lawsuit, employee donya prioleau accuses walmart of negligence claiming the company knew the alleged shooter had known propensities for violence, threats and strange behavior, but continued to employ him. prioleau was in the break room when andre bing, store manager, allegedly opened fire last week killing six people. >> all of a sudden i hear like these shots like a pop, pop, pop. >> reporter: prioleau making a desperate call to her mom during the shooting. >> she's saying he's killing everybody and i know he will be after me. i'm next. >> reporter: according to the complaint the suspected shooter made disturbing comments to

employees leading up to the shooting. he allegedly asked prioleau if she liked guns and told store employees, including managers, that if he was ever fired he would retaliate. in september, prioleau submitting a formal complaint to walmart alleging inappropriate behavior. her mother also complaining to management. >> they did say, go ahead, you know, you can file a formal complaint, but it didn't go any further than that. >> reporter: walmart telling abc news, we are reviewing the complaint and will be responding as appropriate with the court. in that statement walmart also saying our deepest sympathies go out to our associates and everyone impacted including those who were injured. r associes with signiforting all e ow og toy r hose families. robin? >> all right, jay, our thanks to you. now we move on to the world cup and the u.s. advancing in a

>> he's visibly shaken up. >> reporter: u.s. soccer saying pulisic is day to day with a pelvic contusion. his team acknowledging his contribution to the group. >> he brings a lot to the team. everyone sees his brilliance. he's there at the right time at the right space. >> reporter: in scenes of joyous celebration as the u.s. team returned to their hotel. the game played with political undertones as u.s. soccer in a nod of human rights protests in iran posted a photo of the iranian flag without its islamic emblem. the iran government demanding the usa be kicked out, but the game played as planned. the team receiving congratulations from the president. >> that's a big game, man. i spoke to the coach and the players, i said, you can do this. they went, all right -- they did it. god love them. [ crowd chanting ] >> reporter: all over the country a suddenly soccer mad united states erupting. just a tremendous performance under pressure for the u.s. men's national team. they are through to the knockout stage. the second youngest team in the

whole world cup, led by the youngest captain in the tournament, tyler adams. guys? >> thank you so much for that easy transition, will. because joining us now is the captain of the u.s. men's national team, there he is, tyler adams. young fella, congratulations. you tell me what was the first feeling you had after that win, excitement, relief or hungry for more now? >> yeah, thank you very much for having me, guys. yeah, a huge relief. i think for us it was our goal coming into the world cup to get out of the group, but now anything can happen. we have that american mentality that in a playoff setting, we p anything can happen. >> anything can happen meaning you all can win this thing. you're the second youngest team at the world cup. has that been working to your advantage in some way? >> yeah, 100%. the mentality of the group, we're a fearless group, brave, relentless, diverse, all the qualities of a team that can win

this thing. so we have confidence in our group and now it's about going out and executing. >> and a lot of concern about christian pulisic, of course. what can you tell us? have you talked to him? how is he doing? >> yeah, he put it all on the line. he's doing all right. he's in great spirits feeling a lot better now but what a big player for us showing up in the biggest moments. we rely on him a lot for the biggest moments. so he's doing all right. he'll be ready for next game. >> tyler, what can you tell us has surprised you? we talk about how young you are. you prep yourself as best you can playing on the world stage at some of the highest levels. but still what has surprised you coming into the world cup about the experience? >> yeah, i mean i think the confidence of this group is what surprised me the most. it's been a process the last four years. it hasn't been easy, a lot of ups and downs but we've always found a way to respond to the toughest moments so faced adversity and hit it head on and

as you look at the group we found a way to navigate through a tough group and move on to the next round. >> you talk about how you navigated things here and a lot of people gave you a lot of credit for how you handled yourself after that very tough question, i guess, coming from an iranian journalist and how you handled yourself. but all the controversy and things happening off the pitch, has that been particularly difficult for you all to keep the controversy and the politics out of your minds and heads as you prep and get out there to play? >> that's another thing that's impressed me, you know, about this group. we've been laser focused on our goal and our objectives coming into this tournament. that's part of the job. there's always going to be a lot of outside noise but how we have handled that has allowed for a lot of success on the field. >> tyler, last thing, man. you all have been doing interviews watching you back here. right now you are live in front of your fans and your country. >> whoo! >> one message, could you give a message live to your fans and to your country? >> yeah, we're just trying to make everyone back at home proud. the support has been amazing. you know, we love the country. we love repping it and we'll do everything we can to bring it home. >> tyler, we love you.

in a row in georgia. more than 309,000 people casting their ballotsue in a hotly contested senate runoff between incumbent raphael warnock and challenger herschel walker. three days remain for early voting. take a look here at hawaii. new lava flows at the world's largest active volcano. lava reaching as high as 2,000 feet at times. still, no immediate threats to any nearby communities and this morning the main concern, the impact of vog, volcanic smog. that could have an impact on air quality and could deteriorate as long as it's erupting. hawaii's national guard is on standby. nearby residents are being advised to stay informed and stay prepared. a whole lot more ahead on "gma" including the urgent fbi alert about tech support scams out there. we will hear from a man who was robbed of more than $3 million. that is coming up. robin? right now, t.j., the stunning details in the delphi murder case. a judge unsealing documents related to the recent arrest of

richard allen in the killings of two teenage girls in 2017, libby and abby. a determination that an unspent bullet found at this crime scene was cycled through allen's gun. alex perez has that story for us and joins us here in the studio. good morning, alex. >> hey, good morning, robin. this is the first time we are learning how investigators zeroed in on suspect richard allen. besides that bullet, authorities say a number of witnesses put allen on the scene. this morning, stunning new details in the mysterious murders of two young girls in delphi, indiana. a judge tuesday defying prosecutors' requests and unsealing court documents revealing some of what led police to charge richard allen with the 2017 killings of libby german and abby williams. >> charged with two counts of murder. >> reporter: according to the probable cause affidavit obtained by abc news, investigators believe allen is the man seen in this video

recovered from abby's cell phone and says the full video shows the man allegedly following the eighth graders on a bridge. one of the girls says, gun, then police say you hear the suspect's voice. >> guys, down the hill. >> reporter: authorities say the girls do walk down a hill before the video ends. and abby's clothes were located in a nearby creek. and that when investigators carried out a search warrant at allen's home they seized boots, knives and a .40 caliber gun that tests showed matched an unspent bullet found among their remains. their exact cause of death remains unclear. >> everybody is going to keep them in their minds forever. >> reporter: according to that newly unsealed information, multiple witnesses placed the man resembling allen near the bridge where he allegedly encountered the girls just after 2:00 p.m. about two hours later one woman told police she drove by a man on the side of the road who was wearing a blue colored jacket, blue jeans and was muddy and bloody. allen's wife, the document says, confirming to authorities he

owns a similar jacket. 50-year-old allen who is charged last month nearly six years after the murders living about two miles from the crime scene and working at the local cvs. libby german's heartbroken family still in disbelief. >> you know, it's hard. how can somebody do that and just go on living life like nothing happened? i don't understand. probably never will understand that. >> reporter: prosecutors believe there may be others linked to the crime. >> if any other person had any involvement in these murders in any way, that person or persons will be held accountable. >> reporter: allen has pleaded not guilty. in that affidavit, he told police he was on the trail during the time of the murders but denied any involvement. he also could not explain to investigators why a bullet from his gun was found at the scene, only telling police he did not allow anyone to use or borrow his weapon. and allen is being held without

bond. he's due back in court in february. guys? >> all right, alex, great to have you in the studio with us. we'll bring in abc news chief legal analyst dan abrams and abc news contributor former fbi agent brad garrett. let me start with you, dan, and the bullet that was found on the scene. how ironclad is that? >> when you're able to link back a bullet to a particular weapon, to an identifiable weapon it's pretty powerful evidence. but i have to say that i still have a lot of questions here. i don't quite get why they interviewed him in 2017. he places himself at the scene, says he was there. he was walking there. generally resembles the descriptions they've been given although that has changed over time. and only now in 2022 do they get that search warrant to go to his home. they find the weapon that he's had apparently since 2001.

and you do wonder, well, why didn't they do that in 2017? we don't have all the answers yet, and we may get them. >> brad, let's bring you in and more on the unspent bullet. what does that mean in terms of tying it to the gun and why didn't they test it until just this year? >> so, you have three possibilities. if he attempted to fire it, the firing pin would have hit the casing or the end of the bullet. that leaves a unique tool mark that can be matched up. two other possibilities are the extractor. in other words, that is what throws the bullet out of a semiautomatic weapon and the third possibility is the magazine. i got one other thing to say about the gun. i don't understand -- maybe they did this, maybe they didn't -- as to why they didn't run all of the surrounding gun stores of .40 caliber type weapons because i have solved a number of murders that way because typically, people who commit crimes like this have purchased a weapon legally and they have purchased it someplace close to their residence.

we're back now with our latest scam u. according to the fbi, americans lost nearly $7 billion to internet scams and crimes last year alone. whit, i know you have a warning about one of them. >> in this case we're talking about tech support scams like those malicious pop-up windows on your computer that can lead to a cascade of efforts to take your money. the increase has been so dramatic multiple fbi field offices across the country are now alerting the public. this morning, an urgent alert from the fbi reporting an alarming rise in technical support scams. >> you may be on your computer and you may get a pop-up, hey, your accounts have been hacked. call this number. and they'll represent themselves as a reputable software company. >> reporter: the scam resulting in nearly a quarter billion dollars in losses from older americans last year alone, an increase of more than 600%

t.j.? >> oh, my goodness. kayna, thank you so much for being on this story for us. we do want to turn to hope. new hope this morning in the fight against alzheimer's disease. newly released findings on a new alzheimer's drug show that the drug significantly slowed the rate of cognitive decline in the early stages of the disease. our stephanie ramos is here with more on that. stephanie, good morning. >> t.j., good morning. this is some encouraging news in the fight against alzheimer's disease. a new drug named lecanemab has shown to slow cognitive decline by 27% in clinical trial. that's huge. its effect is promising, possibly giving people in the early stage of the disease more time before more cognitive impairment disrupts their life. the clinical trial which followed participants for 18 months did raise some safety concerns because the drug was shown to increase the risk of brain swelling and bleeding. there are still questions about costs and treatment schedule, but with so few drugs for alzheimer's, this may be an

health struggle. the 26-year-old model sharing in an instagram story, i have a cyst on my ovary the size of an apple. adding i don't have endometriosis or polycystic ovarian syndrome, but have gotten an ovarian cyst a few times. it's never fun. it's painful and achy and makes me feel nauseous and crampy and bloated and emotional. according to the u.s. office on women's health, women form at least one cyst every month as part of the normal ovulation cycle. while around 8% of premenopausal women develop cysts large enough to need treatment symptomatic ovarian cysts may be caused by hormonal problems, endometriosis, pregnancy and severe pelvic infections. this is not the first time these two have faced health struggles. in march of this year the model revealing she suffered a mini stroke on instagram for which she underwent surgery speaking about it to amy robach on "gma" months later.
