we got the rain anymore on the way? sandhya: you bet. more coming our way this weekend. i want to show you what it looks like on live doppler 7. the focus is on the south bay. as we get into street-level radar, i want to show you something industry. we told you about the mix precipitation on mount hamilton. it's down to freezing. they're starting to see rain/snow mix in ta. as we look at the south bay, study rain from willow grant -- glenn, meridian avenue, it is what, down towards morgan hill, gilroy, 101 could be tough to get around. the storminess that came to the bay area, the worst of it this morning is moving on out. the level two storm is a level one, a light storm on our exclusive storm impact scale. as we go hour-by-hour between 5:00 and 7:00 p.m., a few trailing showers.

at 9:00 isolated in the southern part of our viewing area. then, get ready for the chill. freeze warning starts at 11:00 for the north bay mountains and eastern santa clara hills. it runs until tomorrow morning, subfreezing temperatures. this could be the coldest air of the season. we could see some records. you may want to take those steps to protect pets, pipes and plants. larry: we will see you then. the storm began overnight in the north bay bringing lots of rain and wind. this is video this morning in santa rosa. kristen: cornell barnard is live in petaluma with a look at the storm. reporter: it was quite a storm, powerful enough to cancel classes here at casagrande high school in petaluma after a power failure. the storm nearly cap one patient -- kept one patient from missing her surgery today. >> the kids all went home today.

reporter: classes were canceled at casagrande high school in petaluma after the power failed at 6:09 thursday morning, leaving the school's cafeteria crew making yogurt breakfast parfaits in the dark. the power never came back on. >> you can see our freezer is empty. we emptied it and sent it to our production kitchen. we emptied everything out. it didn't go bad. reporter: the storm brought a lot of rain in a few short hours making roads are slick. this car spun out and crash on highway 101. luckily no one was hurt. >> the powers out. it is a storm. h the lights --reporter: the lights at this house went out when a tree toppled and hit a power line on hillside avenue. >> a lot of trees. it has it rained for a while. to be expected. >> we're on our way to the hospital because she is having surgery. reporter: the weather left gail stranded on the high of -- side of highway 101.

she had an appointment, she had to keep. >> i'm on the way to the general hospital to have surgery on my knee. the car broke down. reporter: her husband flagged down our abc7news van, asking for help. we called the chp, which showed up within minutes to give gail a lift to the hospital. >> when it rains we get busy. we stop and help everyone we can. if someone needs a ride, take them. reporter: moments later, gail was back on the road. >> thank you. very much. thank you. larry: --reporter: good news, chp says gail made it to the hospital in time for her surgery. happy about that. in the meantime, they are working to get the power back on at casagrande high school. it appears to be an internal issue. a lot of electricians are on site, hoping to resume classes tomorrow. where live in petaluma, colonel bernard abc7 news. kristen: we go to the south bay.

our reporter, dustin dorsey is live at san jose. larry: data sprinkling. how did the south bay handle the wet conditions? reporter: you can see it is starting to pick up a bit. right as we are coming on live. the south bay, it was understandably rough. we had a lot of weather come down in the late morning, which led to flooding on the roads, some issues as drivers were going to lunch. but, if you talk to the people we talk to, they were excited -- talked to, they were excited. on the first day of december what is normally a bright seen at christmas in the park in downtown san jose was more rainy and cold. but that input all residents in a -- they do not put all residents in a grouchy mood. whether it was strolling through downtown san jose people are brave to take on the elements. but david was looking forward to cozying up inside and watching it rain. >> i'm native to california. i never get rain.

i'm warm-blooded. i love it when it is cold and windy, and damp. reporter: perfect for the start of december. >> absolutely. reporter: rain may be the early present many have been asking for due to the drought conditions the entire region is faced. with the benefits, also comes negatives. most notably on the roadways. >> driving us crazy. people don't drive well. they don't know what rain is, especially on the freeways, stay clear of the freeways. reporter: the heaviest came late morning when puddles formed on the freeways and created issues. traffic was backed up on interstate 280 due to this carving overturned. the san jose department of transportation says days like this mean dangerous roadways. >> when we get a rainy day, it's unusual. it's a road condition we're not used to dealing with. reporter: wet roads will not be the only dangerous condition we face in the south bay as the temperatures dip this evening, black ice becomes a concern. with puddles on the road or

black ice keeping your steering wheel straight and not slamming on the brakes is the safest way to get through it. the most important tip, slow down. >> speed, being the number one factor of fatal and severe crashes in san jose. it doesn't just mean speeding over the speed limit. it means exceeding the spaces speed, given the conditions on the road, whether it is dark or there are lots of people walking around or the road or wet rainy weather like we have today. reporter: i hope everyone continues to stay safe on those roadways. these what conditions will continue through the evening. they are expected to clear for tomorrow. we might be waking up to a wintry scene. folks at mount hamilton observatory say they are expecting snow. that will be a beautiful thing to see as we wake up tomorrow morning. live in san jose, dustin dorsey abc7 news. larry: thank you. down trees all around the bay

area, that is a big one that fell down near south van ness in san francisco. a rough day for one car owner near cesar chavez street. a tree crashed down, smashing into his car as well as power lines. kristen: this is a live look at pg's outage map for the bay area -- pge's outage map in bay area. people have lost their power here. when you look closely there are not any larger outages that have been reported. larry: chain controls in effect in sierra. you can see there's a lot of snow on 80 and 50. the snow has really been coming down. official say it is probably best to wait until later if you're heading up into the mountains. karina nova joins us live in the newsroom with the latest. karina: to give you an idea of how much snow is coming down, palisades, tahoe is planning for 50 or more inches over the next five days at the resort. that is great for the slopes. but very dangerous on the roads

from today until sunday. we have seen a multiple spin outs and accidents in the area. chp posting pictures of several jackknife semi's on i-80. chp posted traffic is being turned around on i 80 in both directions from the nevada state line to alta, due to high winds and low visibility. you can see caltrans cameras in the area showing how bad roads are. this one a soda springs. chp is reminding you that travel is highly discouraged and prepare for lengthy delays and chain controls and white conditions. highway 50 doesn't look better. plow trucks have been busy working to clear the snow. the placer county sheriff's office advises people to delay travel plans. >> we understand the allure of the snow. it's december 1. everyone wants to go see and play in the snow, especially if you're coming from an area that does not snow.

but, we don't encourage trouble up to the mountains during the storms, simply because of the traffic as well. there are times where it can take people for to six hours to get up to tahoe, when it would take them about an hour and a half. karina: take a look at the webcam from palisades, tahoe, wind because the ski result to close ski lifts. you'll want to check on the closures at whatever resort you visit. those strong wind gusts are a big problem for high-profile vehicles on the roads. the sheriffs office says for anyone who does decide to travel to the sea euros in the next few days, make sure you are -- to the sierras in the next few days, make sure you are prepared. pack a blanket, extra food, water, flashlights, batteries and a full tank of gas. larry: good advice. to keep an eye on this storm and upcoming storms, remember we have more rain forecast for this weekend.

kristen: through fallout from students from the merger of mills college and northeastern university. graduate student say they have not received federal financial aid this semester despite promises their cost will not increase following the merger. larry: are i-team reporter has more on what is causing the problem and what northeastern university leaders are saying they are doing. reporter: she says she is the first and her family to graduate high school, college and soon graduate school. hamilton is a full-time second-year masters in public

policy student who works full-time and is a full-time all to her son teddy. >> the semester has been very stressful. reporter: in part because of issues with her federal financial aid at al's college at northeastern university. mills college in oakland merged this past summer. the northeastern university student financial services dean promise students their total out-of-pocket cost to complete their degree at northeastern will not be greater than what it would have cost to complete the mills degree. with the semester over, students say they have no financial award letters. >> financial aid is a big way that i have offset my living expenses. i've had to dip into my savings because i have not received anything this year. reporter: the school's director of financial aid emailed hamilton that the school was awaiting authorization from the u.s. department of education federal student aid to offer and process federal drug loans.

a spokesperson tells the i-team, the northeastern university has not submitted an application at the mills college site location so students can be eligible to receive grants, loans and work-study funds. writing, the department has reminded northeastern about the actions they need to request an additional location. >> it is shocking. reporter: regulations require an institution to apply to the department of education for eligibility. regulations do not allow schools to disburse student aid funds at a new location, before the location is approved. >> i heard from classmates that they are left in the dark. reporter: and emailed a statement, a from northeastern university says they have been following the guidance of the department of education-like terms of adding the oakland campus is a new site. they were following the steps the boston office had outlined for them in terms of approach and timing, writing, if there are graduate students who are unable to access federal loans

we are working directly with them. if needed providing interim grants from northeastern. after the i-team spoke with graduate students, including hamilton and bursae aga, sharing their information with northeastern university, both received emails from the director of graduate financial aid saying he will resolve their issues. in one email heat said, it has been -- he said, it has been challenging to get accurate information for our transfer students. the most successful way has been from the students themselves. >> it's the end of the semester, to barely be getting in email about financial aid, when you're almost done with the semester, it's a bit bit of a slap of the face -- a bit of a slap in the face. reporter: a lawsuit was filed on behalf of two mills of students, alleging they misled students up to the mist -- merger. while doesn't discuss financial aid, hewed from several students facing issues with financial aid. >> one of the promises mills made to students was that those

who continued to finish their degree and northeastern could do so without any increase in anticipated cost. if it turns out that northeastern cannot deliver the financial aid these students need, that would be yet another broken promise. reporter: a spokesperson told the i it does not comment on pending litigation, writing, we do not -- we understand changes not unanimous. kristen: stanford universities under investigation for sexual bias against men. according to forbes the department of education's office of civil-rights is looking into claims that stanford offered several programs to support women, but no equivalents for men. they include stanford women's in business, women in stanford law, stanford society of women engineers, and the discretionary fund. the complaint says they violated title ix of the civil rights act sing their outdated because it -- saying they are

day, the day to remember those who died and to acknowledge the fight against this virus is not over. today, at the national aids memorial in san francisco there is a lot of reflection of what the past 40 plus years have been like. larry: leanne melendez was there. ♪ reporter: it was the first in of world aids day in san francisco since 2019. the covid pandemic cap the event at a distance which is why today's celebration seemed meaningful. >> this year's theme is change the pattern for a world without aids. reporter: to make the change, there was a call to acknowledge the 700,000 people have died in aids and there is much to do. this well known activists as many times young folks forget. >> we know you went through bad times but you don't need to exaggerate it. reporter: despite more than 40

shedding new light on how the pandemic has impacted teens' mental health. researchers found the stress of the pandemic may have caused their brains to age faster. they compare to scans from 128 children before and after the end of the pandemic's first year. >> we found that kids after the shutdown has poor mental health, and higher rates of depression and exciting, and sadness -- anxiety and sadness. their brains appeared older than the brains of the same age kids before the pandemic. kristen: on to he say an older brain can mean teens can have harder time accessing memories or regulating emotions including stress and anxiety. some teens brains prematurely aged by three years in the study. experts don't know if the changes in the brain will be permanent. larry: a revolutionary rollout in livermore, a company called monarch tractor showed off the

kristen: it is time for the four at 4:00. we have dan and sandhya. how does the four-day workweek sound? a reduction in pay? larry: great. kristen: global pilot program found most of the companies which participated in a six-month trial are unlikely to go back to a standard work week. workers reported lower stress, fatigue and burnout. the majority of companies in the trial were in the u.s. and ireland. wow. all those benefits? larry.

in bringing this amazing dish. -- and bringing these amazing dishes. larry: what do we have? it smells unbelievable. >> tell them. >> it looks like we have our poached bear salad, short rib and chocolate tart for something sweet to finish. kristen: hold this one up too. tell us about the restaurant. >> it is the supper club. it's a dinner venue with live entertainment five nights a week. it takes you back to the classic supper club that you think of or see in the movies where everyone is sitting, enjoying their cocktails, dinner, wine, while there is live entertainment on the stage. we have paid attention to keeping that eclectic. the history is an an important part of our space at lyon and swan. it's been around for a long time. in 1918 it was the jupiter club

that was owned by shelley he -- it was a black and tan club or interracial couples could mingle safely and freely. it was not legal in 1918. then it became mona's which was the first lesbian bar on the west coast. and then purple onion which put it on the map as a historical building. purple onion was the launching pad for the kingston trio or the smothers brother. mile and -- phyllis diller made her start. it's got an incredible history that we want to pay home watch to -- march -- homage to. it's amazing. larry: as good as all that is the food may be better. you've got unique offerings. what is your favorite? >> my favorite -- they are all my favorite. they are all good.

leave we've had them say this is life-changing. i feel like i'm in new york. or i feel like i'm in the 1920's. it feel special. what i love is that they can't put a finger on why. they just know it feel special. it's the food in the entertainment and the cocktails and the wine. you just sit and enjoy everything. all of a sudden you realize you are having these experiences working together instead of playing over each other. it magical -- it's magical. we are hoping that people will have a hard time getting a reservation.
