spun out this afternoon, it happened near industrial parkway. only the driver was inside the truck and that driver was not hurt. dan: check this out, that is snow on mount hamilton, it is at elevation 4200 feet. ama: that snow is a hint of what we faced next, some parts of the bay area will be below freezing. dan: this is the coldest it has been in a while. sandhya: it could be the coldest air of the season so far that we are talking about tomorrow morning means records could be in jeopardy. you notice most of the action has shifted over mount hamilton, as you just showed us those beautiful pictures. there has been some snow as we take you back the last couple of hours, we expected it, they got it around the south bay, still a

few lingering light showers. we still have a couple more showers left as we head toward 9:00 tonight, and then your comes that freeze warning. north bay valleys and mountains along with the eastern santa clara hills going under that warning at 11:00 tonight, running until 9:00 a.m. tomorrow. those temperatures in the mid 20's to low 30's, and this basically means that frost and freeze could kill any tender vegetation, so you want to not forget to wrap the pipes and drain that fluid and bring in those pets. temperatures mainly in the 40's, look what happens, the numbers plunge, by 11:00 p.m. we are already nearing freezing in santa rosa, dropping well below that tomorrow morning, in the mid 20's. san francisco 39 degrees. the last time we were at this

working to clear the snow and you can see that you're on highway 50. chain controls are in place on some parts of the highway. the placer county sheriffs office is advising people to reconsider their travel plans this weekend. >> the biggest thing for us is the safety factor, beside the traffic at cups, people getting stuck and spinning out and causing accidents. typically things that can be avoided if you just wait and are weak for the storm to pass -- wait an extra week, then you can head back up to the snow and have your fun. ama: this is video from earlier today, the wind because the ski resort to close several of their lifts. check on the closures at whatever resort you visit and keep in mind though strong wind gusts are always a big problem on the roads. if you do end up driving into the mountains in the next few days, make sure you are prepared

investigation continued. several trains have been canceled and many others are still delayed tonight. tonight we are hearing from the father of a 10 month old boy who ingested fennel at a popular park in san francisco's arena district. the father tells abc7news that he thought he was goingng to loe his child. now he is thinking first responders for having jumped into action. >> it's the frightening phone call he is still playing in his mind. his 10 month old son was turning blue and struggling to breathe. in its earlier he was playing in the grass with his twin brother in san francisco. >> when i first arrived he was actually laying motionless on the ground in the park, so he was on the grass on his back. they were pumping air. luz: san francisco paramedics and firefighters arrived on scene within two

minutes of the nanny calling 911. he felt hopeless, hoping his son would survive. you felt you were going to lose him. >> of course. it was only once they put him in the emergency vehicle and transferred him that you felt like, okay, there is a possibility for treatment. but until that point when he is lying there motionless, you don't know what to do. you don't know if that is it. luz: medical records the family provided to abc7 news points to an accidental fentanyl overdose, a diagnosis that never crossed their mind. >> they told me after the fact that they used narcan. how does a 10 month old get into opioids at a playground at a park? luz: around that bench is where the incident happened. it's still unclear how he invested fentanyl, but now his family is speaking to alert other parents to be on high alert of any foil or powder in

shedding new light on how the pandemic has affected teenagers mental health. data shows the stress of the pandemic may have caused teenagers brains to age faster. stanford researchers compared scans from 100 -- 120 eight children before and after the end of the pandemic's first year. >> we found that kids after the shut down had higher rates of depression, higher levels of anxiety, but also their brains appeared older than the brains of the same age kids before the pandemic. dan: he went on to say an older brain could mean teenagers will have a harder time accessing memories regulating emotions including stress and anxiety. some teens brains prematurely aged by three years in the study. experts don't know if the changes in the brain will be permanent. they do plan to do more studies on this in the future. ama: california gas prices are

get colder. it seems like a serene scene right now but don't be full because by tomorrow morning, we are talking about the potential for black ice, frost with freezing cold conditions and the possibility of record low temperatures. the next storm arrives on saturday. spotty showers, mixed precipitation over the high peaks and breezy to gusty. a couple more showers coming through at 7:00 tonight. it winds down quickly and the skies will clear and the temperatures will take a nosedive. 26 in santa rosa, 2090 napa. both cities getting close to records. san francisco 39, that would break the old record of 40 degrees. stay tuned, right now it's looking like a cold enough night. 36 in san jose. i wouldn't be surprised if we do see some records. this is expected to be the coldest air of the season so far.

university graduate students in oakland say they have not received that are all financial aid this semester, despite promises that their out-of-pocket costs would not increase following a merger of those two schools. melanie woodrow has more on what caused the issue and what northeastern university says it is doing about the problem. quick she says she is the first in her family to graduate high school, college and soon graduate school. hamilton is a full-time second-year masters in public policy student who works full-time and is a full-time all -- mom to her four-year-old son, teddy. >> the semester has been very stressful. reporter: in part because of issues with her federal financial aid at mills college at northeastern university. mills college in oakland merged this past summer. the northeastern university student financial services dean promise students their total out-of-pocket cost to complete their degree at northeastern will not be greater than what it would have cost to complete the

mills degree. but with the semester nearly over, students say they have no financial award letters. >> financial aid is a big way that i have offset my living expenses. i've had to dip into my savings because i have not received anything this year. reporter: the school's director of financial aid emailed hamilton in october that the school was awaiting authorization from the u.s. department of education federal student aid to offer and process federal drug loans. -- federal direct loans. a spokesperson tells the i-team, the northeastern university has not submitted an application at the mills college site location so students can be eligible to receive grants, loans and work-study funds. writing, the department has reminded northeastern about the actions they need to request an additional location. >> it is shocking. reporter: regulations require an institution to apply to the department of education for eligibility. regulations do not allow schools to disburse student aid funds at

a new location, before the location is approved. >> i heard from classmates that they are left in the dark. reporter: and emailed a statement, a from northeastern university spokesman says they have been following the guidance of the department of education-like terms of adding the oakland campus is a new site. also that they were following the steps the boston office had outlined for them in terms of approach and timing, writing, if there are graduate students who are unable to access federal loans we are working directly with them. if needed providing interim grants from northeastern. after the i-team spoke with graduate students, including hamilton and bursae aga, sharing their information with the permission of northeastern university, both received emails from the director of graduate financial aid saying he will resolve their issues. in one email, he said, it has been challenging to get accurate information for our transfer students. the most successful way has been

ama: the life of a young victim of a halloween party shooting is being honored at the upcoming rose parade with a portrait made out of floral materials. tara: sparkle davis is putting the final touches on her daughter's memorial. the 19-year-old was shot and killed at a house party on halloween in 2019. >> no one really knows how you feel until they experience it. yes, i still go through my emotions. tara: the shooting at an airbnb took the lives of five people. now oceana's organ donations are helping others live on. >> it helps bring inspiration and heart. as long as i know that my daughter is helping and saving lives, that is what i'm going to continue to do. tara: sparkle starting up a nonprofit in her daughter's name.

tree toppled. the ground so saturated by the relentless rain. someuses to reroute.d forced the nonstop rain clogging drain in the outer richmond district. citizens took matters into their own hands to clear up the mess. across the bay area of the intense weather system wiped out power for nearly 1700 pg&e customers. about 1000 of them were in the peninsula. >> here in the peninsula we had the brunt of this storm. we were anticipating that. we knew the bay would get hit hardest here because of the winds. suzanne: crews are working fast to get repairs made. pg&e says they've been ready for this storm. pg&e also wanted to be ready for the upcoming cold snap and future storms coming our way. >> we want our customers to be prepared as well. have your flashlight with fresh batteries, instead of candles for safety reasons. make sure to charge your phones in your cars.

1-3 feet of snow about 4000 feet. your best travel day will be tomorrow. by monday morning we are talking 29 inches at some of the resorts. tomorrow is sunday, you are good to go. not so much on saturday, and then sunday is heavy snow. the storm is moving out and the last of the showers over mount hamilton, just snow showers and after that we are going with sunshine for tomorrow afternoon, 40's and 50's on the highs. the weekend storm is a light level one, so get ready for that. ama: back to football with larry. larry: we knees belong to different people. the 49ers offense need stem on sunday against miami.
