recession. 263,000 jobs were added to the economy in november. the unemployment rate is near a 50-year low and right now employers in services industries like restaurants and healthcare are hiring big and are struggling to fill open jobs. one way they're trying to attract workers is by raising pay. wages rose at the fastest pace from the start of the year. that raises costs for employers and they pass down those costs in the form of higher prices for consumers and this is where the fed is in a tricky spot and it's been raising interest rates to cool off the hot inflation and the reality is as borrowing costs have gone up, consumers have saved up money and they are still out there spending, janae. >> should consumers expect the interest rates to continue to rise and if so, what does that ? >> janae, we've seen a borrowing cost spike as the fed has hiked six times this year and one of the most obvious places is in

the housing market. if you're trying to get a mortgage for $350,000. you're paying $600,000 more than you were at the start of the year just because of those higher rates. generally, the housing market could be cooling, but the fed is looking at the broader economy and analysts are expecting the fed will hike rates this month. most economists tell me it will be a while before borrowing costs start to come down. the urgent concerns over what thanksgiving meant for the so-called tripledemic, flu, rsv and covid patients are filling up some hospitals and it's not even the peak of the virus system. demarco morgan is in los angeles, one of the hardest-hit areas. good morning. >> whit, good morning to you. health officials across the country are asking everyone to stay away from the emergency room unless it's a true emergency to free up some of those hospital bids for the people who really need them, this as cases continue to rise. >> this morning the post-holiday crush putting hospitals on the

brink as flu admissions nearly double in a week with record hospitalization rates. 44 states as well as new york city, d.c. and puerto rico are reporting very high or high levels of influenza-like activity. >> what we are concerned about is a very early and rapidly growing flu season and one that we haven't seen in about a decade. >> that capacity being felt in fresno, california. the tripledemic of covid-19, flu and rsv slamming area hospitals. >> it's the trifecta. >> the county triggering the excessive refer positive, asking residents not going to the e.r. unless they're experiencing a life-threatening emergency. >> it's a situation where we just don't have any more capacity to take additional patientses. >> nationwide, covid-19 hospital za hospitalizations, in l.a. county, if cases rise to high numbers.

the department of health and human services reporting that pediatric respiratory illnesses already filling 78% of hospital beds nationwide with five states and d.c. now above 90% capacity. that lack of capacity putting families like the sennets in the crosshairs. 8-year-old sebastian diagnoseded with pneumonia, and his virginia hospital didn't have a bed for him and he was transferred to a hospital 30 miles away. it was the first time we were scared, really scared for our kids. >> the day sebastian came home from the hospital they were back in the hospital again this time with luke who was diagnosed with influenza a. >> it was scary and exhausting and you feel like you finally got to the finish line and then you add three more miles. >> the kids are back in school. be vigilant with colds and coughs. they can turn into something more sinister. >> that is so right.

thank you so much. now to the sad update on the search of a missing 7-year-old girl in texas. authorities s s wand killed and >>you. hundred his vont do and d investigators and unfortunately by the time they found her she was gone after police say she was snatched just feet away from her home. overnight a more than 48-hour search coming to a horrific end. the body of 7-year-old athena strand found after police say she was abducted and killed. >> it's one of the toughest investigations that i've been involved in because it's a child. 31-year-old tanner lynn horner is in custody and will be charged with capital murder and aggravated kidnapping. >> we do have a confession.

>> horner was delivering a package and snatched her from the driveway soon after, just 200 yards from the home. authorities believe that strand died within an hour of being abducted. >> the most critical time when a child disappears is the first three hours, and the place you immediately look is who was out in the community. people delivering things, people having calls for their home air conditioning and heater to be fixed. >> the first grader was reported missingome that evening.ra's steotr calling id argument and went to make dinner and found athena's bedroom empty and she searched for an hour and found no sign of the young girl. police issuing an amber alert on thursday. hundred his of volunteers helping in the search efforts. we spoke with her family on friday. >> we definitely don't believe athena ran off. we're not sure if she's been

abducted or not. i'm scared and i'm hoping that we find her. >> investigators locating her body late friday. authorities say there is currently no motive and the suspect did not know athena or her family. fedex telling abc news that words cannot describe their shock at the report surrounding this tragic event and they are cooperating fully with the investigating authorities. >> a parent's worst nightmare. reena, thank you for that update. now to the warning of the fbi about what are the national security dangers of tiktok. chris wray says the app could be used by china for espionage and could be manipulated to control content. ike is in washington. good morning, ike. >> christopher wray is concerned with fro data it collects fromhe millions of tiktok users in the u.s. tiktok is owned by beijing-based company bite dance. the control of the app is in the

hands of the chinese government that doesn't share our values. wray says the chinese has the ability to contain the recommendation algorithm and possibly use it for influence operations. >> he stressed that china could use user info for traditional espionage operations, as well. tiktok coo says the company protects all data from american users and that chinese government officials have no access to it p, but those concerns over chinese influence over tiktok was a top concern of the trump administration. they threatened to ban the app and pressured bite dance to sell to a u.s. company. u.s. officials and the company are currently in talks over a possible situation or solution that would alleviate american security concerns. >> those security concerns are not new, ike. thank you. now to a terrifying and deadly scene at sea and what witnesses
