the us a soggy saturday for much of the bay area, rain rolled in early this morning and has continued to fall for most of the day into the night making for a messy first weekend in december. good evening, you are watching abc seven news at 11. doppler seven has been lit up today with plenty of green tracking it all for us, our meteorologist -- she has the first look. >> we had quite a bit of rain. the system that moved through today came in from the south and here's live doppler 7 with a satellite radar image. you see all that rain coming from the south, that is exiting the bay area. then another system moving in from the north at this point, we had some really impressive rain at the south end, a big surge

there were three and a half inches of rain from this system. we are in a little bit of a break between these two systems and i want to show you how it is going to play out over the next few days. it is a storm level one, on our scale. scattered showers through tuesday morning up to an inch of rain, additional rainfall most falling in the north bay. especially for tomorrow. some of it moderate, complete rain totals for your neighborhood and a winter storm warning coming up. >> the bay area got a good soaking this saturday. while we do need it, the wet weather is making things messy for those who have had to venture out. abc seven has the story. >> even the heavy rain it was not going to stop this family from getting the crisp their christmas tree. >> even in this weather you came for your christmas tree? >> of course.

>> well i was told there was a rain sale so that's why we it 'a tradition. >> this family is one of the few who despite the rain still made it out to this christmas tree lot in san ramon. >> it's the time of year, if it's raining, snowing, inhaling, whenever you want get something. >> so much of the bay area will get up to an inch and a half of rain this weekend, saturday is expected to be the wettest day with the rainfall through monday. the rain also means snow for lake tahoe. >> it's good, we are very excited for it, where -- it's great to see it lake level snow. >>'s travel experts says they have been getting about 100 inches below the average snowfall over the past few years, that is why he's excited about this rain which could bring up to 2 feet of snow. >> we've been in a drought for so long, and he precipitation is good. but this actually feels like a normal winter.

>> climate experts like this one from uc berkeley says a strong storm this early in the season is a good start. a longer-term forecast for california shows another dry winter. >> we need about an extra year's worth of precipitation to come out of the drought, so a successful season this year is about 60 feet of snow. that might be a little optimistic though. >> he says that has only happened twice in the past 150 years. in san ramon abc7news. >> some pleasant hill residents will have to do with car damage caused by the storm. a large tree came down this evening crushing two vehicles and damaging others near patterson road and roberta avenue. it caused some other property damage outside homes nearby but fortunately no one was injured. and all the rain has closed the oakland zoo for daytime admissions tomorrow. the zoo tweeted this video with word of the closure today. as of now the glowfari light

festival is still on tomorrow night, the zoo says it will reassess mid afternoon tomorrow and post on its website if there are changes. a winter storm warning is in effect right now for the sierra and it is a messy drive for those headed on the roads to or from tahoe. chains are required on interstate 80 starting at kingvale for those making the drive up, if you are coming down they are required at rainbow. the storm warning is in effect until monday morning, people are being advised not to make the drive and less -- unless they absolutely have to. you can check the forecast and access doppler seven on demand through our streaming tv app, download the app now wherever you stream. a sideshow in the middle of the night at one of san francisco's most prominent locations has raised questions about his slow response from police.

you hear the noise there, this was the scene on the embarcadero on washington street just before midnight last night. a block from the ferry building two observers sent abc7news video of cars kicking up smoke and driving recklessly all while dozens of pedestrians watched. john walsh was one of the people recording from his balcony, he said the sideshow went on for about 15 minutes and by the time police arrived all of the drivers were gone. >> at that point i just saw maybe two or three police cars patrolling the area and that was it. these events could be dangerous, somebody could get badly hurt. it seems like our public officials have not really formulated a good response to these things so they can get them under control. >> re-reached out to san francisco police regarding wells's claims about last night but the department has not responded.

in the east bay a postal service truck carrying mail and packages burst into flames after a car slammed into it early this morning on i 880 near broadway in oakland. the driver of the car was trapped inside by the fire and died. investigators say it appears the driver of a white ford crown victoria was racing another car when he hit the truck which then slammed into a concrete barrier and overturned on broadway. the car's driver left the scene. the postal service is all the mail in the truck was outbound and people can find if there packages were destroyed by tracking their shipment online. new details tonight on a shooting outside a pleasant hill pizza restaurant last night, we have learned the victim was a 36-year-old man and the suspect has been arrested was 54 years old. thooting happened after the two men got into a dispute inside the pizza my way to contra costait spilled outside s

when the victim was shot multiple times, his condition is not available, the victim is an employee and he did know the gunman. building a better bay area -- new numbers show covid-19 cases are surging in the bay area and across california since thanksgiving. bay area news group reports cases have jumped from a daily cases for 100,000 residents in late october two over 13 at the end of november. santa clara and solano are on the cdc's list of counties with the highest transmission levels, flu and rsv cases are spiking as well. the cdc now lists california among 11 states with the highest influenza-like illness activity. abc7news is committed to building a be -- better bay area and one of the areas we have focused on is the plight of the tenderloin. the city of san francisco is shutting the doors on the

tenderloin center tomorrow, once seen as a key part to the city's battle against the drug overdose crisis, it now stands to close without a backup. as abc7news reporter reports, the back in it resources could leave the city's most vulnerable with no other option's. >> soon this site will come down, sunday the tenderloin center will close and for the hundreds of people accessing its services daily there is some anxiety. >> and going to miss it. >> pj says the center gives him a safe place to use drugs. access clean supplies and support in kc overdoses. >> work and have dirty needles, were not and have a place to use >> the center opened in january, according to the mayor's office, 300 overdoses have been reversed here.

in more than 200 people have been placed into housing. another 1000 connected to shelters. it is also a place to get a free meal and warm shower. dean preston is the board supervisor for the tenderloin district. >> it makes no sense and it has been a source of frustration. >> the mayor's plan is to open more permanent facilities, dubbed wellness centers offering similar services but time says the supervisor, has run out. >> where on record urging the mayor to make sure there is no gap, to either put up a new site or extended temporarily the tenderloin center services and should not -- she's not doing either. >> the mayor's office provided a statement reading after the closing of the tlc, the city will continue to partner with community organizations to prevent fatal drug overdoses, reduce open air drug use in and

welcome back, dozens of brave advocates plunged into the frigid waters today to save a crumbling san francisco landmark or at least try to. aquatic park peer or municipal pier was recently closed to the public because it is structurally unsafe. now friends of the peer are urging officials to fund the repair bill. abc news reporter has the story. >> how was it? >> it was cold. >> fran was among a group of brave folks who jumped into the supercold bait water. a chilly move designed to get some attention for an aging landmark in distress. the need

send a message to th park service and congress that it's time to fix this. >> the historic pier once enjoyed by fishermen and taurus is in need of repair, it is owned by the national park service built in 19 33. years of crashing waves and storms have left a crumbling, the national park service closed appear permanently a few weeks ago. last summer a fire burned an abandoned building near the entrance of the pier. >> will you sign a postcard to help save the pier? >> advocates are rallying the public to urge officials to come up with the funds to fix the pier, that repair bill now topping $100 million. >> my message to the feds is we need money yesterday, come save this resource, it is a national asset. >> advocates say if the pier was allowed to collapse into the bay the cove could disappear. >> is not just recreation, it protects the beach from erosion.

our meteorologist joins us, i feel like we either get it all or we get nothing. right now we are getting at all. >> yes we had a lot today. we will still have several more days of rain because another system is moving in overnight. here's a look at live doppler 7 and skylight raider i manage. we had a little break right now, the other system is going to be moving in shortly. here's what it looks like. a shot from sutro, so we can see finally with the clouds clearing. san francisco's 48°, oakland 47, cooler and half moon bay at 43. we can see across from the east bay temperatures are going to be a little bit milder tomorrow. some breaks in the rain. santa rosa 45, napa 46 a pretty much in the mid 40's. this time we are checking out the south bay in san jose and here's what you need to know with the forecast. another system arrives overnight, it's going to bring a scattered showers, tomorrow into

monday and we thought it would end monday but now it looks like it's going to linger into tuesday morning. it's going to be a little bit slower moving but rain totals will still be about the same as what we thought. here's a forecast animation so midnight tonight you notice the system starts to hit the north bay, the new system coming in. it is a storm impact scale one out of five so a light system. notice by 7:00 tomorrow morning, mostly still in the north bay. pop showers throughout the rest of the bay area but check out one :00 tomorrow. especially for the 49ers game, shower slide past san jose and then it will be mostly dry after that. in the afternoon hours for the game look into monday we will see waves of showers move through the bay area and lingering as it wraps around and finally exits tuesday morning. and then tuesday afternoon should be dry. rain totals this time we are going to see greater rain totals in the north bay because this system is coming from the northwest.

up to an inch or even more in cloverdale, notice areas around the bay area that generally around half an inch and slightly less in the south bay where this previous system brought a ton of rain through monterey bay. also a winter storm warning in effect, you don't want to be driving to and from tahoe. chain requirements are on 80 right now, difficult snow levels are dropping tomorrow, we could see up to 3 feet of snow at the highest peaks. also lows tonight won't be as cold, it will still be chilly in the north bay, temperatures dropping into the upper 30's through santa rosa and lakeport around the bay, look for mid 40's. tomorrow afternoon with a little bit more sunshine through parts of the east and south bay, san jose antioch and fairfield it will be hitting 60° and lots of upper 50's around the bay area as though showers continue. here's the weather forecast, very wet but it will be a light storm sunday monday to tuesday morning.

resorts struggled to reopen. >> the face of sarah tahoe is forever changed but there is an era of excitement and a buzz of activity is this time-honored ski resort repairs to reopen for the first time since a fire roared through here in august of 2021. we were here is the fire grew in the distance, smoke filled the air and cell service was wiped out. crews worked hard to protect buildings, chairlifts and other infrastructure. most of all that survived but many of the old growth pine groves that made sarah tahoe so iconic have been destroyed. it has taken months of hard work to reach this moment, says communications manager. >> the fire was devastating when i came in last year. sierra is the locals choice here in tahoe, it's a place that people call home. for many generations, learning how to ski, to progressing their skills and it was really hard

transfer their flight info to the tags. alaska airlines says it will reduce wait times by nearly 40% as there is no need to print out a paper tag at the check-in counter. this week 2000 500 alaska frequent flyers will be able to receive the tags. the electronic tags will cost $75. a driver working for fedex has been arrested and accused of kidnapping and killing a seven-year-old girl in texas. the man has confessed to the crime, this comes days after hundreds of people started searching for the girl after she disappeared, our abc reporter following the story. >> the today search for the seven-year-old ending and heartbreak. authority saying the texas girl's body was found late friday night after police say her alleged kidnapper, a fedex driver, confessed. telling police where he left the body. >> is one of the toughest investigations i have been involved in.

>> the 31-year-old is now in custody, charged with capital murder and kidnapping. he delivered a package to her house wednesday when he snatched the girl about 200 yards from her home. authorities believe she died within one hour of being abducted. >> it hurts our hearts to know that that child died. >> fedex which assisted in the investigation said words cannot just drive our shock. when asked if they would review their hiring process a spokesperson pointed to how they contract independent businesses saying these companies are subject to background checks going on to say that safety is their highest priority. officials say they're not sure yet if the subject has a prior criminal history. >> any time a child dies it hits you in your heart. you compare that child to your own children when they were that age. >> her body was taken to the medical examiner's office and please have yet to reveal a motive. the bond is set at 1.5 million

dollars. abc news in washington. >> in ukraine a group of people have been arrested for trying to steal a mural by a famous mural artist banksy. they caught the thieves after they pulled the artwork out of a wall in the capital city of kyiv. the mural is one of several pieces that have popped up following russia's invasion of the country. from the air to the deep sea, a team of scientists recently discovered some previously unknown creatures on the seafloor near australia. one of them is called a deep-sea that fish which looks more like a ray of some sort. a host of other bizarre sea life was found including a spider fish, a blind people, a hyphen to lizard fish and a couple other eagle varieties. still ahead, how about a little holiday spirit to add to your chair this year? i spirit we mean drinks. a look at some pop-up bars in the bay area that might just

welcome back, a cultural collaboration is underway in san francisco. a jewish event with a parisian theme to help brighten the holiday season for children in need. the annual hanukkah in paris party is taking place at le colonial restaurant. the organizer calls it a chance to experience jewish culture while giving back to the community, the event is organized by the nonprofit value culture and includes a toy drive. donations collected will go to toys for tots. looking for a different way to toast the holidays?
