directions between big sur and ragged point. caltrans assesses -- says there is no estimate on when this will reopen. the storms we have experienced have dealt more than 10 inches of snow at donner pass in the sierra. it is making for some treacherous driving conditions. the chp in truckee tweeted this video, urging people to slow down when driving through the sierra. if you are headed to the lake tahoe area, check before you go. there have been chain requirements for several days. kumasi: populace he made his first public appearance since he was attacked inside his san francisco home he appeared at last night kennedy center honors in washington, d.c., along with his wife, house speaker nancy pelosi. you can see them at the bottom right of this video. he has on a black hat and black gloves. you will remember he was hit in the head with a hammer during an attack in late october in san francisco. he also had serious injuries to his right arm and hands. it took president biden a few

moments to recognize it was paul to speaker pelosi, but when he did, he threw a fist bump in the air toward him. a man charged with attacking paul pelosi will make his first court appearance next week we told you last week that a new judge was assigned to this case after the original judge revealed a possible conflict of interest. david to pap is facing numerous charges, including attempted murder, burglary, assault with a deadly weapon, and elder abuse. reggie: a second vote is scheduled tomorrow to allow police robots to use lethal force in some cases, but at least one supervisors try to stop that. dean preston says last week's vote in favor of the plan was not legal. in a letter to the mayor, he cites a provision that requires at least 30 days notice before any public hearing is held on military equipment. preston says this proposal was added to the sfpd website just three days before it was presented.

preston was one of three supervisors to vote against last week's proposal. kumasi: state legislature begins to address high gas prices here in california governor newsom called the special session, calling on lawmakers to approve a price gouging penalty. he is also looking at cost, profits, and pricing. the three biggest cities are down significantly compared to a week ago. in san francisco, the average price at $4.84 a gallon. in oakland, $4.77. all under five dollars for the first time in months. reggie: sf public health is stationing staffers in the plaza today to find alternative help after the closure of the tenderloin outreach center. at center closed yesterday. it was planned as a temporary site to reduce overdose deaths and increase connections to social services. it opened in january. the mayor's plan is to open more

chevron gas station worker in antioch. his family is now speaking out. 36-year-old james williams died last month after an armed robbery at the chevron. abc 7 news reporter spoke with his family. >> he was trying to do so good at he was trying to be on the right path. he was going to get married, everything. reporter: she says everything changed for her family after she got the call that her fiancé, james williams, was killed following an armed robbery at this chevron gas station in antioch. >> we lost some thanksgiving time, we have to bury him around christmas. his kids will never get to spend that with him. reporter: last saturday, he was working the overnight shift and he was rubbing on point. the district attorney says surveillance footage shows after the two suspects took off on foot, williams dropped a gun and took off after them. limbs fired first, hitting a suspect police identified as 19-year-old ronald jackson.

jackson allegedly then returned fire, which police say ultimately killed williams. >> even if they feel like it was self defense, they went in his door will he was on the clock and did that. that's wrong, that's not ok. reporter: the deputy da says they considered all possible scenarios, but because williams chased after the suspect with a firearm, at that point in the eyes of the law, he says it was no longer self-defense and the suspects be charged with murder. >> technically, when you commit a robbery, the robbery is not over until you reach a place of safety. the robbers had not at this time. but the analysis is that now they are under a deadly attack, when such attack was not legally justified. reporter: overton says her fiancé was a good man, a father who worked hard to provide for her and her three daughters. as she sits with her newborn on her lap, she is reminded that her daughter will never know her father. they are not happy that anybody got shot, but they still believe

williams acted in self-defense. >> we don't like the situation. we have to deal with it. you fell protecting himself. who knows if they would've come back in there the next day and rubbed him again. and this time shot him. reporter: only one of the two suspects has been caught. he could face up to 15 years in prison. the das office as given the fact that williams was killed, they will seek writer penalties at the time of sentencing. reggie: this morning, nearly 2000 people are displaced in into the asia after a volcanic eruption on the island of java. the volcano spewed thick columns of ash and smoke nearly 5000 feet into the sky over the weekend. towns and villages are blanketed with falling ash, blank and getting out the sun. some houses are very to the rooftops in debris. despite the damage, no reports of any deaths. kumasi: this morning, former president trump is facing criticism for calling for the "termination" of parts of the

one ucsf doctor says there are three pathogens circulating. influenza, rsv, and covid. the doctor says while hospitalizations are up, the number of covid patients in the icu is down. they have not seen severe disease among those who are vaccinated and boosted against covid. the doctor says the biggest threat this holiday season is the flu. just 50% of those eligible have been vaccinated against it. >> i want people to please get that influenza vaccine because i think that will influence what happens over the christmas season. there are certain types of masks that are filled and filtered. these masks really protect us against w, owdespaces. gl the doctor says masking still matters as far as holiday travel and gatherings go. she says to take all the precautions and stay home when you're sick, wash your hands, and sneeze or cough into your elbow.

the cdc's color-coded map shows california and other states were shaded purple, the worst of the three shades in the very high flow level. reggie: thank you. a major case in the supreme court involving lgbtq+ rights. justices will hear arguments on whether businesses come refuse a service to same-sex couples based on religious beliefs and freedom of speech. here is derek dennis. reporter: this morning, whether it is baking a cake -- >> if it's not something i will say, i won't write it on a cake. reporter: --, or making a website -- >> i'm a christian and therefore i believe marriage is between one man and one woman. reporter: -- the supreme court is set to decide whether a person can refuse services based on their religious rights.
