joins us now with the reaction and what some want to see happen now loose. i'm at the controversial tenderloin site initially opened as a centralized place where people could have access to resources but it also received criticism for giving out needles and allowing supervised drug consumption. on january 18th, mayor london breed announced a tenderloin linkage center how people struggling with mental illness and substance use disorder as fast forward to almost a year later and now the city closed it. this has been something we've been demanding from the mayor for months which is if you're going to close the tenderloin center we understand it was always meant to be temporary, but we've got hundreds of people every day who are relying on this center for services and for help according to san francisco's department of public health over. assist shelter food or such use treatment depending on who you
6:01 pm
asked the center was considered helpful or not. i used to go there for meals you were able to get housing through them. absolutely. i am an artist. and they don't even help us. you know, i know on drugs or down they don't do anything man, you know, everybody get high they had a safe place for you to get high without getting robbed according to the ceo of health, right 360 over 300 overdoses were reversed at the center now, she's fearful many will overdose without anyone to help them in the area. i think saving 350 lives is a pretty significant metric for a health improvement because people who are dead never have an opportunity for recovery or be re-engaging with family. community of life sfdph director of behavioral health services and mental health asaf said the center was always meant to be a temporary space why the city
6:02 pm
would close the center without having an alternative site for people to go the tenderloin center was it's always slated to be a temporary program. unfortunately or lease and had was up at the end of the year and we are aggressively seeking ways that we might be able to continue the service while putting into place service navigation during this period immediately following the closure. now there's no clear date as to when the city will have a hub or a similar site available. today's city volunteers. we're giving out pamphlets with places in the area where people can get resources for now loose peña abc 7 news. alright luz. thank you another major concern for san francisco. city leaders is the city's monumental homeless problem as abc 7 news reporter lianne melendez explained some local leaders are now wondering if a forest hospitalization program being used in new york city. could work here?
6:03 pm
under mayor, eric adams, new york is enforcing a new policy which allows police and other first responders to force people into hospitals if they think they cannot take care of themselves. i know some people may look at what we're doing saying that we are trying to do something to take away the right of people. no, we're not the right is that people should be able to live in dignity state senator. scott wiener says about 1% of those who are unhoused in san francisco suffer from severe mental illnesses and/or drug addiction people who are truly are not able to make decisions for themselves and who are spiraling towards death and it is not progressive. it's not humane to just allow people to deteriorate and die on our streets when we can help them people like this woman seen here on a ring camera grabbing and tossing a food delivery bag then getting mad and pounding on a residential door.
6:04 pm
san francisco already has a forced treatment program ordered by the courts, but it falls short of what new york is trying to do but to get that treatment the person had to be taken first to an emergency crisis unit at least eight times in a year in other words a repeat offender and then last march governor newsom launched a program. called care court intended to provide those individuals with the services they need but for some forcing people into treatment is a violation of their human rights, but set that aside for a moment advocates for the homeless will tell you san francisco doesn't have the space and means to treat everyone they don't have the capacity. they don't have the hospital capacity. the hospital costs are enormous and there's just again, there's just not the hospital capacity for that. there's not the service capacity is not this is not the staffing capacity. in reality many agree. it's doubtful that this time san francisco has the will to follow in new york's footsteps in san francisco

6:11 pm
it's completely unfair to california's for these companies to essentially be price gouging to be charging california's whatever they pop they want and putting all that money in their pocket san francisco assembly member matt haney attended the special session. please be seated after gas prices hit more than $6 a gallon over the summer the governor initially proposed a windfall tax on oil companies chris. mckayley a veterans sacramento lobbyists said the new call for a penalty fee as opposed to attacks is likely a way to prevent needing a super majority vote in the legislature if something is truly a t then it is an exception and therefore only requires a majority of vote. the governor can call it whatever he wants but when you pose a fee upon an industry, that's a tax. kevin slagle is a spokesperson for the western states petroleum association, which represents the major oil companies operating in california. he says the penalty will only hurt consumers and blames the high gas prices on a number of

factors. it's a result of market forces of supplying demand of the global markets in volatility caused by things like the war and you in ukraine, but berkeley high school of business professor severin bornstein says those argument. s jane wyson 's twenteen gas prices in california have had an extra 30 or 40 cents more per gallon than other states even after adjustments for taxes and environmental fees what i call the mystery gasoline surcharge. so the question is, where's that money going? why did this appear in 2015? and is it a competition problem or is it some sort of regulatory cost? governor says it's price gouging and so as for the penalty he is proposing the maximum amount of profits in oil company would be allowed and the amount that the penalty would be have not been included in this initial proposal. they say that will be determined through the legislative process lawmakers are likely to begin discussions and voting on this plan next year in the newsroom

win over the miami dolphins. the injury ends garoppolo season and quite possibly his career with the niners and abc 7 sports anchor chris alvarez is here now on jimmy g and the team's quarterback situation. what a pun intended bad break. yeah terrible roller coaster ride with the two quarterbacks now. on a quarterback number three jimmy garoppolo season an abrupt end yesterday when he broke his foot against the dolphins surgery date not been set yet. he enters the offseason as i mentioned an unrestricted free. now rookie brock purdy takes over as a team starting quarterback tough news for jimmy, especially considering everything. he went through in the offseason. remember the shoulders surgery then returning to the team late in the summer to back up trailer and then lance went down suffered a season and an injury in week two. so garoppolo really was having a good season which makes this injury all the more disappointing. i mean when a guy gets hurt in the middle of the game, i'm sure he had a real rough night last night and it's very spin most of the night with his family. he's got his brothers and his parents here, and i'm sure it was rough. but you know jimmy came in today

[laughter] the most important thing to know about cris is that he's now a "jeopardy!" super-champion, who has won more money in regular season play than all but four players in "jeopardy!" history and more consecutive games than all but five. what we don't know is how this remarkable run will come to an end. i'm sure steph and ben are hoping this happens today. let's find out. good luck to all three of you.
